Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are the mesenchymal tumors of the gastrointestinal tract. Extra Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (EGISTs) are rare neoplasms that occur outside the gastrointestinal tract [1]. Miettinen et al. [2] described the first EGIST in 1999. EGIST accounts for 10% of all GISTs [3]. The main distinction between GIST and EGIST is the site of origin of the primary tumor, as GIST occurs throughout the GI tract, from the esophagus to the anus, whereas EGIST is a tumor without any connection with the intestinal wall and are reported in the retroperitoneum, mesentery, and omentum [4]. Hu et al. [5] reported a first case report of EGIST of larynx.We present a second case report of Extra-gastrointestinal stromal tumor of larynx a 47-year-old male reported to ENT Department Command Hospital Central Command Lucknow with complaints of Hoarseness. On examination found to have right vocal cord growth for which he underwent excision of right vocal cord growth. Glomangiopericytoma (GPC) is a rare benign sinonasal tumor originating from Zimmerman's Pericytes surrounding capillaries and accounting for less than 0.05% of all sinonasal tumors. Glomangiopericytoma has low malignant potential (5-10%) and is mostly diagnosed in the 6th or 7th decade of age with slight female preponderance. We presented here a case series of 5 patients with sinonasal GPC. This research was conducted at a tertiary healthcare centre in North India. In our case series, all the patients were evaluated and underwent endoscopic surgical resection. All patients underwent digital subtraction angiography (DSA) and preoperative embolization. The coblation technique used for haemostasis proved very effective and time-saving. All patients exhibited cytoplasmic SMA positivity (a marker of GPC) and CD34 negativity, while one patient exhibited a high Ki-67 index (> 10%), which is a predictor of aggressive tumor behavior. None of the patients showed any recurrence in follow-up. We recommend performing complete endoscopic surgical excision to prevent recurrence. Retropharyngeal abscess (RPA) is a rare, potentially fatal condition found more frequently in young children usually who were having a history of Upper respiratory infection. RPA is an acute suppurative infection of the retropharyngeal space. In view of scarce literature availability and atypical presentation in infants, it poses a definitive diagnostic dilemma to the clinicians. Here, we are reporting a three-month-old male infant presented with feeding difficulty, obstructive sleep apnea and intermittent inspiratory stridor. Child was managed in a pediatric ICU with a multidisciplinary approach which involved pediatrician, otorhinolaryngologist pediatric anesthesiologist, microbiologist, and radiologist. With the recent advances, early radio imaging have a vital role in diagnosing the condition and also helps in planning of surgery. Prompt diagnosis and surgical management with appropriate antimicrobial therapy for this condition is imperative to prevent complications such as airway obstruction and mediastinitis. COVID-19 infection during pregnancy is potentially dangerous to neonatal hearing, as it is the period of organogenesis, and associated hyperthermia may cause vascular damage, disruption of cell migration, and death of the dividing neuroblasts. To investigate the possible association between neonatal hearing loss and gestational mild COVID-19 infection. A prospective case-control study was conducted at a tertiary healthcare centre in North India from March 2020 to Oct 2022. Cases included the neonates born to COVID-19-positive mothers were subjected to hearing screening at 1, 3 and 6 months using otoacoustic emission (OAE) and automated auditory brainstem response (AABR). Similar protocol was applied to controls, i.e., neonates borne to mothers with no gestational history of COVID infection. Results were analyzed statistically. Our study reported that the statistical difference between groups A (n = 942) and B (n = 942) for gestational COVID-19 infection and neonatal hearing loss was insignificant at 1 month ( p -value 0.272 for OAE and p -value 0.634 for AABR) and also insignificant at 3 and 6 months ( p -value 0.679 for AABR, for both). The head and neck region is a complex anatomical area with vulnerable nervous and vascular structures, auditory and visual organs and upper aero-digestive tract. Penetrating foreign bodies of head and neck region are not uncommon and pertain mostly to wood, metal and glass (Levine et al. in Am J Emerg Med 26:918-922, 2008). This case report describes an airborne high velocity foreign body blown off from a lawn mower penetrating the left side of the face, penetrating deep into nasopharynx and opposite parapharyngeal space through paranasal sinuses. Eagle's Syndrome is a much discussed yet controversial and debatable diagnosis of exclusion which is treated by many specialities with often unsatisfactory results. Due to entrapment/impingement on surrounding neurovascular structures by elongated styloid process patient may present with multitude of symptoms. Treatment is controversial and opinions are divided on choice of conservative and surgical management. Aim was to study outcomes of conservative and surgical modalities of treatment of Eagle's Syndrome and bring some clarity on management, what to offer, to whom and when. This prospective observational descriptive study included 15 patients of Eagle's Syndrome, 7 were treated with conservative method and 8 underwent resection of styloid process with intraoral approach. With objectives in mind to study efficacy of both management modalities, pain visual analogue scale (VAS) scores were recorded pre-intervention, post-intervention and during follow up on 1, 3 and 6 months and compared. Conservative management resulted in up to 70% reduction in pain VAS scores till 3 months of therapy (mean pre-intervention score being 3.71, 3 months-1, 6 months-1.29), while surgical modality resulted in nearly 99% reduction in mean pain VAS scores up to 3 months and even improved after 6 months (mean pre-intervention score being 6.75, 3 months-0.5, 6 months-0.13). We live in a data-rich world with rapidly growing databases with zettabytes of data. Innovation, computation, and technological advances have now tremendously accelerated the pace of discovery, providing driverless cars, robotic devices, expert healthcare systems, precision medicine, and automated discovery to mention a few. Even though the definition of the term data science continues to evolve, the sweeping impact it has already produced on society is undeniable. We are at a point when new discoveries through data science have enormous potential to advance progress but also to be used maliciously, with harmful ethical and social consequences. Perhaps nowhere is this more clearly exemplified than in the biological and medical sciences. The confluence of (1) machine learning, (2) mathematical modeling, (3) computation/simulation, and (4) big data have moved us from the sequencing of genomes to gene editing and individualized medicine; yet, unsettled policies regarding data privacy and ethical norms could potentially open doors for serious negative repercussions. The data science revolution has amplified the urgent need for a paradigm shift in undergraduate biology education. It has reaffirmed that data science education interacts and enhances mathematical education in advancing quantitative conceptual and skill development for the new generation of biologists. These connections encourage us to strive to cultivate a broadly skilled workforce of technologically savvy problem-solvers, skilled at handling the unique challenges pertaining to biological data, and capable of collaborating across various disciplines in the sciences, the humanities, and the social sciences. To accomplish this, we suggest development of open curricula that extend beyond the job certification rhetoric and combine data acumen with modeling, experimental, and computational methods through engaging projects, while also providing awareness and deep exploration of their societal implications. This process would benefit from embracing the pedagogy of experiential learning and involve students in open-ended explorations derived from authentic inquiries and ongoing research. On this foundation, we encourage development of flexible data science initiatives for the education of life science undergraduates within and across existing models.

Due to lack of globally standardized guidelines and clarity on indications, patient selection, intra-operative preparations, technique, complications, postoperative care and decannulation protocols, percutaneous tracheostomy (PT) has come in vogue as compared to standard open surgical tracheostomy (OST). PercuTwist and guide wire dilatational method (GWDF), techniques of PT, offer lesser operative time and ease of surgery being a bedside procedure. There seems to be paucity of Indian literature on rising trend of increasing indications, post-operative care, management of complications and outcomes of tracheostomy. And thus, there arises a felt need to envisage a study in tertiary care setup targeting these issues and to question the so far unchallenged acceptance of new techniques and technology. Our aim is to study the recent trend of indications, complications, and outcomes of both OST and PT in a cohort of Indian patients who underwent tracheostomy. 80 patients with mean age of 59.0 ± 15 years underwent tracheostomy (OST: 48 (60%), PT: 32 (40%), and among PT, PercuTwist: 16 (50%), GWDF: 16 (50%)) for various indications with objectives to compare operative time, complications and decannulation rates of tracheostomy surgery, within the follow up period of 3 months. Most common indication of elective tracheostomy was prolonged ventilation, and for emergency ones, upper airway obstruction. Mean operative time taken by all the three techniques was comparable, i.e., 16.3 v/s 15 v/s 15.3 min (Open v/s PT GWDF v/s PT PercuTwist). Most common intra-operative complication of OST was haemorrhage (16.3%) and that of PT was false passage (8.8%). Early post-operative complications were haemorrhage (OST: 3.75%, PT: 1.25%) and tube blockage and dislodgement (equal distribution among OST and PT). Late post-operative complications were stomal granulations in PT: 7.5%. Outcomes of tracheostomy were significantly better with OST (36 (45%)) than PT (14 (17.5%)). In PT group, PercuTwist fared better than GWDF in terms of lesser complications (PercuTwist: 10%, GWDF: 18.6%) and better decannulation rates (PercuTwist: 13.6%, GWDF: 3.75%). Most common indication for tracheostomy remains prolonged intubation; complication of OST is intra and early post-operative haemorrhage and that of PT being tube dislodgement and blockage. Hippophae rhamnoides L. ssp. turkestanica (Elaeagnaceae) is a predominantly dioecious and wind-pollinated medicinal plant species. The mature fruits of the species possess antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, anticancerous, and antistimulatory properties that are believed to improve the immune system. The identification of male and female plants in H. rhamnoides ssp. turkestanica is quite difficult until flowering which usually takes 3-4 years or more. A sex-linked marker can be helpful in establishing the orchards through identification of genders at an early stage of development. Therefore, we studied the genetic diversity of populations in Ladakh with the aim to identify a gender-specific marker using ISSR markers. Fifty-eight ISSR primers were used to characterize the genome of H. rhamnoides ssp. turkestanica, of which eight primers generated 12 sex-specific fragments specific to one or more populations. The ISSR primer (P-45) produced a fragment which faithfully segregates all the males from the female plants across all the three valleys surveyed. This male-specific locus was converted into a SCAR. Forward and reverse primers designed from this fragment amplified a 750-bp sequence in males only, thus specifying it as an informative male-specific sex-linked marker. This SCAR marker was further validated for its capability to differentiate gender on an additional collection of plants, representing three geographically isolated valleys (Nubra, Suru, and Indus) from Ladakh region of India. The results confirmed sex-linked specificity of the marker suggesting that this conserved sequence at the Y chromosome is well preserved through the populations in Ladakh region. At present, there are no reliable markers which can differentiate male from female plants across all the three valleys of Ladakh region at an early stage of plant development. It is therefore envisaged that the developed SCAR marker shall provide a reliable molecular tool for early identification of the sex in this commercial crop. The genetic diversity of populations as surveyed by ISSR primers revealed 85.71 % polymorphism at the population level. The dendrogram obtained divided the genotypes into three different clusters, and the distribution of male and female genotypes in all the clusters was random. The Nei's genetic similarity index was in the range of 0.63-0.96.

Human immunodeficiency virus regulatory protein Rev (regulator of viral expression) is translated from a monocistronic transcript produced early in the viral replication cycle. Rev binds to the cis-acting, highly structured viral RNA sequence Rev response element (RRE) and the Rev-RRE complex primarily controls nucleocytoplasmic transport of viral RNAs. Inhibition of Rev-RRE interaction therefore is an attractive target to block viral transport. We have developed a stable cell line carrying a lentiviral vector harboring a rev gene and a co-linear Rev-dependent GFP/luciferase reporter gene cassette and thus constitutively expressing the reporter proteins. Dose-dependent luciferase activity inhibition in the indicator cell line by known small molecule inhibitors Proflavin and K37 established the specificity of the assay. This novel single step assay, that involves use of very small amount of reagents/cells and addition of test material as the only manipulation, can therefore be useful for screening therapeutically potential Rev-RRE interaction inhibitors.

As multiple new procedures now require better visualization of the aortic valve, we sought to better define the central aortic valve coaptation area seen during diastole on multi-detector row cardiac computed tomography (MDCT). 64-MDCT images of 384 symptomatic consecutive patients referred for coronary artery disease evaluation were included in the study. Planimetric measurements of this area were performed on cross-sectional views of the aortic valve at 75% phase of the cardiac cycle. Planimetric measurement of central regurgitation orifice area (ROA) seen in patients with aortic regurgitation and Hounsfield units of the central aortic valve coaptation area were performed. Mean area of the central aortic valve coaptation area was 5.34 ± 5.19 mm(2) and Hounsfield units in this area were 123.69 ± 31.31 HU. The aortic valve coaptation area (mm(2)) measurement in patients without AR was: 4.90 ± 0.17 and in patients with AR: 10.53 ± 0.26 (P ≤ 0.05). On Bland-Altman analysis a very good correlation between central aortic valve coaptation area and central ROA was found (r = 0.80, P ≤ 0.001). Central aortic valve coaptation area is a central area present at the coaptation of nodules of arantius of aortic cusps during diastole; it is incompetent and increased in size in patients with aortic regurgitation.

The specific role of size scale, surface capping, and aspect ratio of zinc oxide (ZnO) particles on toxicity toward prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells was investigated. ZnO nano and microparticles of controlled size and morphology were synthesized by wet chemical methods. Cytotoxicity toward mammalian cells was studied using a human osteoblast cancer cell line and antibacterial activity using Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli) as well as using Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was conducted to characterize any visual features of the biocidal action of ZnO. We observed that antibacterial activity increased with reduction in particle size. Toxicity toward the human cancer cell line was considerably higher than previously observed by other researchers on the corresponding primary cells, suggesting selective toxicity of the ZnO to cancer cells. Surface capping was also found to profoundly influence the toxicity of ZnO nanoparticles toward the cancer cell line, with the toxicity of starch-capped ZnO being the lowest. Our results are found to be consistent with a membrane-related mechanism for nanoparticle toxicity toward microbes.

The most important commercial species of coffee, Coffea arabica, which produces 73% of the world's coffee crop and almost all of the coffee in Latin America, is the only tetraploid (allotetraploid, 2n=4x=44) species known in the genus. High-frequency somatic embryogenesis, plant regeneration and plant recovery were achieved from leaf explants of a mature, elite plant of C. arabica cv. Cauvery (S-4347) using a two-step culture method. To assess the genetic integrity of the nuclear, mitochondrial and chloroplast genomes among the hardened regenerants, we employed multiple DNA markers (RFLP, RAPD, ISSR) for sampling various regions of the genome. Although the nuclear and mitochondrial genomes of the mother plant and five ramets derived from the mother ortet were similar in organization, this was not so in the somatic embryo-derived plants where both nuclear and mitochondrial genomes changed in different, characteristic ways and produced novel genome organizations. A total of 480 genetic loci, based on the data obtained from a total of 16 nuclear, mitochondrial and chloroplast gene probes, in combination with nine restriction enzyme digests, 38 RAPD and 17 SSR primers, were scored in 27 somatic embryo-derived plants and the single control. Among these, 44 loci were observed to be polymorphic. A relatively low level of polymorphism (4.36%) was found in the nuclear genome, while polymorphism in the mitochondrial genome (41%) was much higher. No polymorphism was detected in the chloroplast genome. The polymorphism in the mitochondrial genome was found in only 4 plants. Such selective polymorphism was not true for the nuclear genome. Thus, this in-depth and comprehensive study demonstrates, for the first time, the presence of subtle genetic variability and novel genome organizations in the commercially well-established somatic embryogenesis-derived plants of this important coffee species.

We report high-frequency embryogenesis and plantlet development from microspores isolated from anthers of two indica (IR-43, IR-54) and a japonica (T-309) rice cultivars, without prior nutrient preculture of anthers. Pretreatment stress of anthers with mannitol or a sugar-starvation medium, and use of maltose as the carbohydrate source in the microspore culture medium were found to be critical. Co-culture of microspores with rice ovaries was found beneficial but not essential. More than 60% of the microspores of the japonica variety Taipai-309 and 25-45% of the indica cultivars IR-54 and IR-43 showed induction of non-gametophytic development. Consequently, in the best treatments for IR-43 and T-309, more than 500 microspore-derived embryos could be obtained from a single dish (35 mm) containing about 80,000 microspores. Among the indica cultivars, the maximum response was obtained in the basal medium M-019. Plantlet regeneration occurred in about 9% (T-309), 7% (IR-43) and 2% (IR-54) of the transferred embryo-like structures.

In a culture method for enhanced axillary branching functional plants of Eucalyptus tereticornis and E. camaldulensis are efficiently regenerated. To assess the genetic integrity among the regenerants, we employed multiple analytical tools including cytochemical and molecular assays. The 2C DNA amounts were estimated in the meristematic zones of root and shoot tips of 250 micropropagated plants, collected at various cycles of tissue culture from multiplication to field transfer, and compared to the corresponding mother plants. The culture conditions did not induce amplification or deletion of DNA sequences, nor were there drastic change(s) in chromosome number, since all the micropropagated plants of E. tereticornis (1.2 pg) and E. camaldulensis (1.4 pg) maintained the same DNA amounts as the mother plant. Total DNA of 46 micropropagated and mother plants digested with eight restriction enzymes and hybridized to 13 nuclear, mitochondrial, and synthetic oligonucleotide DNA probes yielded 82 bands. Hybridization patterns indicated that the variation observed was minor. To further confirm the genetic fidelity, 12 arbitrary 10-base primers and six synthetic oligonucleotide sequences, successfully used to amplify genomic DNA from in vivo and in vitro materials, produced 133 fragments that were monomorphic across the plants tested. The present results demonstrate that enhanced-axillary-branching culture of mature trees could be utilized commercially for mass clonal propagation of these two important Eucalyptus species that have been recalcitrant to vegetative propagation. The results also provide novel insights into the genetic differences between E. tereticornis and E. camaldulensis.

For the transfer of genes from B. tournefortii (TT) to the allotetraploid oilseed brassicas, B. juncea AABB, B. carinata BBCC and B. napus AACC, B. tournefortii was first crossed with the three basic diploid species, B. campestris (AA), B. nigra (BE) and B. oleracea (CC), to produce the allodiploids TA, TB and TC. These were tetraploidized by colchicine treatment to produce the allotetraploids TTAA, TTBB and TTCC, which were further crossed with B. juncea and B. napus to produce three-genome hybrids with substitution-type genomic configurations: TACC, TBAA and TCAA. These hybrids along with another hybrid TCBB produced earlier, the three allodiploids, their allotetraploids and the four diploid parent species were studied for their male meiotic behaviour. The diploid parent and the allotetraploids (TTAA, TTBB and TTCC) showed regular meiosis although the pollen viability was generally low in the allotetraploids. In the allodiploids (TA, TB and TC) only some end-to-end associations were observed without any clearly discernible chiasmata or exchange points. Chromosomes involved in end-to-end associations were randomly distributed at the metaphase/anaphase-I stages. In contrast, the three-genome hybrids (TACC, TBAA, TCAA and TCBB) showed normal bivalents whose number exceeded the expected bivalent values. Bivalents arising out of homoeologous pairing were indistinguishable from normal pairs by their disjunction pattern but could be distinguished on the basis of the heteromorphy of the homoeologous chromosomes. The three-genome hybrids could be backcrossed to allotetraploid oilseed brassicas as they had some fertility. In contrast, the allodiploids could neither be selfed nor back-crossed. On the basis of their meiotic stability, in terms of more pronounced homoeologous pairing and fertility for backcrossing, the three-genome configurations provide the best possible situation for the introgression of alien genes from the secondary gene pool to the allotetraploid oilseed crops B. juncea, B. napus and B. carinata.

RAPD markers were used to assess genetic fidelity of 23 micropropagated plants of a single clone (L34) of Populus deltoides. Eleven arbitrary 10-base primers were successfully used to amplify DNA from in vivo and in vitro material. Of these, 5 distinguished a total of 13 polymorphisms common across 6 micropropagated plants. Apart from these 6 plants, the amplification products were monomorphic across all the micropropagated plants, the mother plant and 4 additional field-grown control plants. Our results show that RAPD markers can be used to gain rapid and precise information about genetic similarities or dissimilarities in micropropagation systems that might not be so easily evident from other commonly used techniques.

DNA restriction endonuclease fragment analysis was used to obtain new information on the genomic organization of Vicia ribosomal DNA (rDNA), more particularly among V. faba and its close relatives and the taxa within three (Narbonensis, Villosa, Sativa) species' complexes. Total genomic DNA of 90 accessions representing 49 Vicia species was restricted with 11 enzymes, and the restriction fragments were probed with three ribosomal clones. Twenty-eight repeat unit length classes were identified. The number of length classes (1-2) per accession did not correspond to the number of nucleolar organizing regions (NORs). The number of rRNA genes was independent of the 2C nuclear DNA amount present in the taxon. Each of the 90 accessions had 2 (rarely 1)-4 DraI sites. Those taxa with the same number of DraI sites generally could be distinguished from each other by different configurations. Probing of the DNA samples digested with tetranucleotide recognition restriction endonucleases emphasized differences between divergent spacer regions and enabled relative homologies between the coding regions to be established. Overall, rDNA restriction site variation among the species showed a good correlation with taxonomic classification. The rDNA analysis indicated evolutionary relatedness of the various taxa within the Narbonensis species complex. rDNA diversity within two other species complexes (Villosa, Sativa), on the other hand, was more extensive than expected. With few exceptions, data on the two complexes give evidence of taxon-specific divergences not seen with other approaches. The restriction site variability and repeat length heterogeneity in the rDNA repeat exhibited startling differences between V.faba and its close wild relatives included in the Narbonensis species complex. This analysis provides new evidence that none of the species within the complex can be considered to be putative allies of broad bean.

To obtain new information on phylogenetic relationships between wild and cultivated broad bean, restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis of chloroplast (cp) DNAs from Vicia faba and eight subspecies/species of its close wild relatives grouped together in the Narbonensis complex was carried out using 14 restriction endonucleases. The molecular sizes of the cpDNAs obtained were similar (122.6-123.4 kbp), indicating that they had all lost one of inverted repeats. Among the more than 300 sites surveyed, the three subspecies within V. narbonensis, which exhibit just as many types of karyotypes, were shown to have identical cp fragment patterns. Genetic distances between all of the pairs of species were calculated from RFLP data. The cpDNA diversity within the Narbonensis complex was found to be more extensive than expected, except for the genetic relationship between V. hyaeniscyamus and V. johannis in which a total of three mutations were detected among the 300 sites sampled, thereby showing their close relatedness. The cpDNA of V. faba vis-a-vis its wild relatives also exhibited startling differences, indicating a clear division of Vicia species into two distinct lineages. This analysis unambiguously provides new evidence that the wild species grouped in the complex did not contribute their plastomes to the evolution of V. faba, and hence none of the species can be considered to be putative allies of broad bean. The present study also demonstrates profound cpDNA diversity among closely related species that have lost one of inverted repeats.

Comparisons of the chromosome numbers, 2C nuclear DNA amounts and karyomorphology were made in explant cultures of diploid (2n = 2x = 14) and autotetraploid (2n = 4x = 28) Phlox drummondii. In 6-36 week old calli derived from diploid internodal segment explants, and in cells of root tips regenerated from such callus, marked differences were observed in chromosome number. The chromosome numbers ranged from 2n = 14 to 2n = 100 and DNA amounts from 8.20 to 63.20 pg in the diploid derived callus, while the extent of variation was much reduced in the regenerated roots. In contrast, the autotetraploid cultures were characterised by the maintenance of the same chromosome number and DNA amounts as the mother plant. Modified chromosome structures were not apparent in any of the cultures. The possible reasons for the chromosomal instability at the diploid level and stability at the tetraploid level are discussed.

Cultivated and wild Oryza species belonging to different genomic groups were studied with regard to their soluble seed-protein profiles. There is an essential uniformity in the banding patterns within various genomes and the basic patterns are not species-specific but genome-specific. O. meridionalis contains a subgenome similar to the A genome of O. rufipogon. Certain specific bands present among A genome species have been found to be useful in tracing the phylogenetic affinity between the cultivated species and their presumed wild progenitors.

Pollen plants were obtained from anther-derived calli of the indica rice variety Basmati-370. Anther-response (anthers producing pollen derived calli) and plant regeneration frequency from the pollen derived calli. was very low. Donor plants which flowered at the average max/min. temperature of 34.2°/23.3°C gave a significantly higher anther-response to in vitro techniques, than did those which flowered at 29.1°/16.4°C. Somatic callus induction and subsequent plant regeneration was readily obtained from mature seed embryos. While 2,4-D or 2,4,5-T (1 or 2 mg/l) proved highly efficient for callus induction, tryptophan (50 or 100 mg/l) induced a high frequency of green plants from the calli.

The composition of nuclear DNA in 3 Vicia species are compared. The species V. eriocarpa, V. johannis and V. melanops are from three separate subgeneric sections of Vicia and show a fourfold variation in their amounts of nuclear DNA. DNA melting experiments, buoyant density gradient analysis and Cot reassociation experiments show that the quantitiative change in nuclear DNA between the three species is achieved by changes in the amounts of both repetitive and nonrepetitive DNA sequences. It is suggested that while the increase in the repetitive fraction is achieved by the proliferation of repetitive base sequences the increase in the nonrepetitive fraction is due to the steady accretion of highly diverged base sequences resulting from mutations, deletions, insertions and base sequence rearrangements among families of repetitive sequences.

A Cancer Attitude And Knowledge Questionnaire was administered to two groups of incoming first year medical students and to one of these groups at the end of their second year. The same questionnaire, except for the questions dealing with cognitive knowledge, was also used to assess the attitudes of practicing oncologists. There was a wide variation in the responses to the attitudinal items in all groups. In view of many inconsistencies in the results, a rigorous analysis of the instrument was carried out. The subscales derived from the Cancer Attitude Survey were found to lack adequate reliability. The only part of the attitudinal test found to be reliable and discriminatory was the semantic differential developed by the authors. It is, therefore, concluded that the currently used techniques are inadequate, and there is a need for a new multidimensional approach to the assessment of attitudes toward cancer.

Triploid Crinum augustum contains two types of complements (2 n = 33, 32 + Te) in the meristems of primary and secondary roots, together with a small amount of aneusomaty. This condition is maintained by efficient vegetative reproduction. The normal complement (2 n = 33) contains 11 triplets. The 32 + Te complement tallies with the former except that one of the small submedian chromosomes of the XIth triplet is replaced by a telocentric which more or less tallies in size with the short arm of the missing chromosome. The telocentric probably arose through misdivision early in ontogeny in which the complete centromere was in the smaller arm. The longer acentric arm, lost in a few subsequent cell generations, is not expected to exercise any deleterious effect because of the polyploid nature of the taxon. Only cells containing the full complement of 33 chromosomes are selected in the male germ line.
