Conformity refers to the act of changing one's behaviour to match that of others. Recent studies in humans have shown that individual differences exist in conformity and that these differences are related to differences in neuronal activity. To understand the neuronal mechanisms in more detail, animal tests to assess conformity are needed. Here, we used a test of conformity in rats that has previously been evaluated in female, but not male, rats and assessed the nature of individual differences in conformity. Male Wistar rats were given the opportunity to learn that two diets differed in palatability. They were subsequently exposed to a demonstrator that had consumed the less palatable food. Thereafter, they were exposed to the same diets again. Just like female rats, male rats decreased their preference for the more palatable food after interaction with demonstrator rats that had eaten the less palatable food. Individual differences existed for this shift, which were only weakly related to an interaction between their own initial preference and the amount consumed by the demonstrator rat. The data show that this conformity test in rats is a promising tool to study the neurobiology of conformity.

Testing rodents in their home cages has become increasingly popular. Since human intervention, handling, and transport are minimized, behavior can be recorded undisturbed and continuously. Currently existing home cage systems are too complex if only relatively simple operant-learning tests are to be carried out in rats. For that purpose, a new low-cost computer-controlled operant panel was designed, which can be placed inside the home cage. A pilot study was carried out, using an intolerance-to-delay protocol, classically developed for testing behavioral impulsivity. Male adult rats were tested in their home cages, containing the operant panel provided with nose-poking holes. Nose poking in one hole resulted in the immediate delivery of one food pellet (small-soon, SS), whereas nose poking in the other hole delivered five food pellets after a delay (large-late), which was increased progressively each day (0-150 sec). The two daily sessions, spaced 8 h apart, lasted 1 h each, and the time-out after food delivery was 90 sec. A clear-cut shift toward preference for SS, which is considered a classical index of cognitive impulsivity, was shown at the longest delay. It is noteworthy that rats shifted when the delay interval was longer than the mean intertrial interval-that is, when they experienced more than one delay-equivalent odds against discounting (see Adriani & Laviola, 2006). The shortened training (2 days) and testing (5 days) phases, as allowed by prolonged and multiple daily sessions, can be advantageous in testing rodents during selected short phases of development. Current research is focusing on further validation of this and similar protocols.

When animals associate a stimulus with food, they may either direct their response towards the stimulus (sign-tracking) or towards the food (goal-tracking). The direction of the conditioned response of cod was investigated to elucidate how cod read cue signals. Groups of cod were conditioned to associate a blinking light (conditioned stimulus, CS) with a food reward (unconditioned stimulus, US), with the CS and the US located at opposite sides of the tank. Two groups were trained in a delay conditioning procedure (CS = 60 s, interstimulus interval = 30 s) and two groups were trained in a trace conditioning procedure (CS = 12 s, trace interval = 20 s). The response pattern was similar for the delay- and trace-conditioned groups. The initial main response at the onset of the CS was approaching the blinking lights, i.e. sign-tracking. In the early trials, the fish did not gather in the feeding area before the arrival of food. In the later trials, the fish first approached the blinking lights, but then moved across the tank and gathered below the feeder before the food arrived, i.e. sign-tracking followed by goal-tracking within each trial. These two responses are interpreted as reflecting two learning systems, i.e. one rapid, reflexive response directed at the signal (sign-tracking) and one slower, more flexible response based on expectations about time and place for arrival of the food (goal-tracking). The ecological significance of these two learning systems in cod is discussed.

Basic knowledge about learning capacities and awareness in fish is lacking. In this study we investigated which temporal gaps Atlantic cod could tolerate between two associated events, using an appetitive trace-conditioning paradigm with blinking light as conditioned stimulus (CS) and dry fish food as unconditioned stimulus (US). CS-US presentations were either temporally overlapping (delay conditioning, CS duration 24 s, interstimulus interval 12 s) or separated by 20, 60, or 120 s (trace conditioning, CS duration 12 s) or 2 h (control, CS duration 12 s). The percentage of fish in the feeding area increased strongly during CS presentation in all delay, 20 s, and 60 s trace groups and in one out of two 120 s trace groups, but not in the control groups. In the 20 and 60 s trace procedures, the fish crowded together in the small feeding area during the trace interval, showing strong anticipatory behaviour. In all the conditioned groups, the fish responded to the CS within eight trials, demonstrating rapid learning. At 88 and 70 days after the end of the conditioning experiments, the delay and 20 s trace groups, respectively, were presented the CS six times at 2-h intervals without reward. All groups responded to the light signal, demonstrating memory retention after at least 3 months. This study demonstrates that Atlantic cod has an impressively good ability to associate two time-separated events and long time retention of learnt associations.

The Iowa gambling task in humans is, in principle, suited for the study of the long-term efficiency of behavior in a biologically relevant context. Key features of this task are uncertainty of outcomes and a conflict between the immediate and the long-term payoff options. Animal models allow us to study the underlying neurobiology of decision-making processes and the long-term efficiency of behavior in more detail and at a greater depth than is possible in humans. Therefore, we set out to develop a model of this task in rodents, using the task's key features. In this article, we describe the results of the first series of experiments with rats and mice. The data thus far suggest that mice and rats behave in a way similar to humans; that is, they tend to choose the option with the best long-term payoff more often as the test progresses.
