Rice production faces a significant threat from the rice leaffolder, Cnaphalocrocis medinalis . To address this challenge, growing resistant varieties stands out as a sustainable and eco-friendly pest management strategy. This necessitates identifying resistant sources and understanding their inheritance patterns through employing DNA markers for marker-assisted resistance breeding. Our study involves screening for resistant cultivars following the SES of IRRI, assessing genetic diversity among landraces using molecular markers, and identifying genomic regions associated with resistance. Screening indicated that 33.33%, 27.08%, 19.79%, and 19.80% of genotypes were resistant, moderately resistant, susceptible, and admixture, respectively. Landraces were categorized into three clusters, with clusters I and II predominantly containing moderately resistant and resistant cultivars, and cluster III mainly susceptible types. Molecular variance analysis revealed 12% variation among populations and 88% within the population. Simple linear regression identified significant marker-trait associations, with markers RM 162 and RM 284 on chromosomes 6 and 8, respectively, found highly associated with leaffolder resistance. Phenotypic variation in leaffolder damage correlated highly with the allelic effects of these markers. Further confirmation of marker linkage with resistance loci was established through independent assays on highly resistant and susceptible genotypes. The objective of the present research was to develop fluconazole-loaded transferosomal bigels for transdermal delivery by employing statistical optimization (2 3 factorial design-based). Thin-film hydration was employed to prepare fluconazole-loaded transferomal suspensions, which were then incorporated into bigel system. A 2 3 factorial design was employed where ratios of lipids to edge activators, lipids (soya lecithin to cholesterol), and edge activators (sodium deoxycholate to Tween 80) were factors. Ex vivo permeation flux (Jss) of transferosomal bigels across porcine skin was analyzed as response. The optimal setting for optimized formulation (FO) was A= 4.96, B= 3.82, and C= 2.16. The optimized transferosomes showed 52.38 ± 1.76% DEE, 76.37 nm vesicle size, 0.233 PDI, - 20.3 mV zeta potential, and desirable deformability. TEM of optimized transferosomes exhibited a multilamelar structure. FO bigel's FE-SEM revealed a globule-shaped vesicular structure. Further, the optimized transferosomal suspension was incorporated into thyme oil (0.1% w/w)-containing bigel (TO-FO). Ex vivo transdermal fluconazole permeation from different transferosomal bigels was sustained over 24 h. The highest permeation flux (4.101 μg/cm 2 /h) was estimated for TO-FO bigel. TO-FO bigel presented 1.67-fold more increments of antifungal activity against Candida albicans than FO bigel. Arsenic (As) is a well-known human carcinogen, and the consumption of rice is the main pathway for the South Asian people. The study evaluated the impact of the amendments involving CaSiO 3 , SiO 2 nanoparticles, silica solubilizing bacteria (SSB), and rice straw compost (RSC) on mitigation of As toxicity in rice. The translocation of As from soil to cooked rice was tracked, and the results showed that RSC and its combination with SSB were the most effective in reducing As loading in rice grain by 53.2%. To determine the risk of dietary exposure to As, the average daily intake (ADI), hazard quotient (HQ), and incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) were computed. The study observed that the ADI was reduced to one-third (0.24 μg kg -1 bw) under RSC+SSB treatments compared to the control. An effective prediction model was established using random forest model and described the accumulation of As by rice grains depend on bioavailable As, P, and Fe which explained 48.5, 5.07%, and 2.6% of the variation in the grain As, respectively. The model anticipates that to produce As benign rice grain, soil should have P and Fe concentration more than 30 mg kg -1 and 12 mg kg -1 , respectively if soil As surpasses 2.5 mg kg -1 ., (© 2023. Mitigating the atmospheric greenhouse effect while enhancing the inherent soil quality and productive capacity is possible through soil carbon (C) sequestration, which has a significant potential to counteract the adverse effects of agroecosystem level C emission through natural and anthropogenic means. Although rice is the most important food in India, feeding more than 60% of the country's population, it is commonly blamed for significant methane (CH 4 ) emissions that accelerate climate change. Higher initial soil organic matter concentrations would create more CH 4 under the flooded soil conditions, as reducible soil C is a prerequisite for CH 4 generation. In India, rice is generally cultivated in lowlands under continuous flooding. Less extensive organic matter breakdown in lowland rice agroecosystems often significantly impacts the dynamics of soil active and passive C pools. Change from conventional to conservation agriculture might trap a significant quantity of SOC. The study aims to investigate the potential of rice-based soils to sequester C and reduce the accelerated greenhouse effects through modified farming practices, such as crop residue retention, crop rotation, organic farming, varietal selection, conservation agriculture, integrated nutrient management, and water management. Overall, lowland rice agroecosystems can sequester significant amounts of SOC, but this potential must be balanced against the potential for CH 4 emissions. Management practices that reduce CH 4 emissions while increasing soil C sequestration should be promoted and adopted to maximize the sustainability of rice agroecosystems. Fluoride (F) in agricultural soil is increasing continuously due to injudicious application of F-laden fertilizers, causing global concern about fluorosis disease. The objective of the study was to assess F risk in humans due to soil ingestion, dermal contact, and particulate inhalation during various agricultural activities. The study also emphasized chemical fractionation, distribution, and geochemical understanding of high F incidence. Agricultural surface soil was sampled randomly from 5 km × 5 km square grids besides soil profile samples for studying the vertical distribution of F. Various F fractions in soil (1:1 soil:water ratio, calcium chloride extractable F, hot water soluble F, exchangeable F, Fe-Mn oxide bound F, organic matter bound F, residual F, and total F) were estimated using the sequential fractionation method. Multivariate geochemical analysis and soil F risk were also assessed in humans. The water soluble F (F 1:1 ) and CaCl 2 extractable F (F Ca ) varied between 0.11 to 6.73 mg kg -1 and 1.02 to 6.94 mg F kg -1 soil, respectively. Total fluoride (TF) however, ranged between 115 to 456 mg F kg -1 . A higher average of F Ca /TF moving down the soil profile indicated a propensity for F endemicity. Weathering, ion-exchange, alkalinity, and clay were found to control the soil geochemistry of the area. The F contamination index explained > 82% variance of F contamination, but the hazard quotient of F for an adult was found < 1, indicating no potential fluorosis risk in the area. Calcium is a ubiquitous molecule and second messenger that regulates many cellular functions ranging from exocytosis to cell proliferation at different time scales. In the vasculature, a constant adenosine triphosphate (ATP) concentration is maintained because of ATP released by red blood cells (RBCs). These ATP molecules continuously react with purinergic receptors on the surface of endothelial cells (ECs). Consequently, a cascade of chemical reactions are triggered that result in a transient cytoplasmic calcium (Ca[Formula: see text]), followed by return to its basal concentration. The mathematical models proposed in the literature are able to reproduce the transient peak. However, the trailing concentration is always higher than the basal cytoplasmic Ca[Formula: see text] concentrations, and the Ca[Formula: see text] concentration in endoplasmic reticulum (ER) remains lower than its initial concentration. This means that the intracellular homeostasis is not recovered. We propose, herein, a minimal model of calcium kinetics. We find that the desensitization of EC surface receptors due to phosphorylation and recycling plays a vital role in maintaining calcium homeostasis in the presence of a constant stimulus (ATP). The model is able to capture several experimental observations such as refilling of Ca[Formula: see text] in the ER, variation of cytoplasmic Ca[Formula: see text] transient peak in ECs, the resting cytoplasmic Ca[Formula: see text] concentration, the effect of removing ATP from the plasma on Ca[Formula: see text] homeostasis, and the saturation of cytoplasmic Ca[Formula: see text] transient peak with increase in ATP concentration. Direct confrontation with several experimental results is conducted. NrfA is the molecular marker for dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA) activity, catalysing cytochrome c nitrite reductase enzyme. However, the limited study has been made so far to understand the structural homology modeling of NrfA protein in DNRA bacteria. Therefore, three model DNRA bacteria (Escherechia coli, Wolinella succinogenes and Shewanella oneidensis) were chosen in this study for in-silico protein modeling of NrfA which roughly consists of similar length of amino acids and molecular weight and they belong to two contrasting taxonomic families (γ-proteobacteria with nrfABCDEFG and ε-proteobacteria with nrfHAIJ operon). Multiple bioinformatic tools were used to examine the primary, secondary, and tertiary structure of NrfA protein using three distinct homology modeling pipelines viz., Phyre2, Swiss model and Modeller. The results indicated that NrfA protein in E. coli, W. succinogenes and S. oneidensis was mostly periplasmic and hydrophilic. Four conserved Cys-X1-X2-Cys-His motifs, one Cys-X1-X2-Cys-Lys haem-binding motif and Ca ligand were also identified in NrfA protein irrespective of three model bacteria. Moreover, 11 identical conserved amino acids sequence was observed for the first time between serine and proline in NrfA protein. Secondary structure of NrfA revealed that α-helices were observed in 77.9%, 73.4%, and 77.4% in E. coli, W. succinogenes and S. oneidensis, respectively. Ramachandran plot showed that number of residue in favored region in E. coli, W. succinogenes and S. oneidensis was 97.03%, 97.01% and 97.25%, respectively. Our findings also revealed that among three pipelines, Modeller was considered the best in-silico tool for prediction of NrfA protein. Overall, significant findings of this study may aid in the identification of future unexplored DNRA bacteria containing cytochrome c nitrite reductase. The NrfA system, which is linked to respiratory nitrite ammonification, provides an analogous target for monitoring less studied N-retention processes, particularly in agricultural ecosystems. Viruses are the potential cause of several diseases including novel corona virus-19, flu, small pox, chicken pox, acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, severe acute respiratory syndrome etc. The objectives of this review article are to summarize the reasons behind the epidemics caused by several emerging viruses and bacteria, how to control the infection and preventive strategies. We have explained the causes of epidemics along with their preventive measures, the impact of lockdown on the health of people and the economy of a country. Several reports have revealed the transmission of infection during epidemic from the contact of an infected person to the public that can be prevented by implementing the lockdown by the government of a country. Though lockdown has been considered as one of the significant parameters to control the diseases, however, it has some negative consequences on the health of people as they can be more prone to other ailments like obesity, diabetes, cardiac problems etc. and drastic decline in the economy of a country. The World Health Organization (WHO) recognized a novel coronavirus as the causative agent of a new form of pneumonia. It was subsequently named COVID-19 and reported as the source of a respiratory disease occurrence starting in December 2019 in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China. It has been affirmed a public health emergency of international significance by the World Health Organization. It is regarded as a subset of the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and the Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS); COVID-19 is triggered by a betacoronavirus called SARS-CoV-2, which affects the lower respiratory tract and occurs in humans as pneumonia. A variety of drugs, such as remdesivir and favipiravir, are currently undergoing clinical trials to evaluate for the management of COVID-19. The effect of the pandemic as well as the epidemic that follows through the life cycles of various recycled plastic is evaluated, particularly those required for personal safety and health care. In response to the growth in COVID-19 cases worldwide, the energy and environmental impacts of these lifecycle management have risen rapidly. However, significant hazardous waste management concerns arise due to the need to assure the elimination of residual pathogens in household and medical wastes. The levels of trace elements (As, Hg, Cr, Cd, Pb, Co, Ni, Cu, Mn and Zn) in commercially important fish species sampled from fish markets of Adelaide, Australia; canned fish from South Australian supermarkets; and fish markets of West Bengal, India were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) after microwave digestion. Mercury was determined by using triple quadrupole ICP-MS. The accuracy of the methods was assessed with a certified standard reference material (NRCC-DORM-3 dogfish protein), and the results were compared with values reported in the literature. The results indicated considerable variations in the accumulation of trace elements among the fish species. The relationship between species with respect to trace element concentrations was examined using cluster analysis, which showed Indian fish species forming distinct groups from the others. Other than As in sardines, whiting and snapper and Hg in swordfish and snapper, the trace element concentrations were within permissible limits recommended by various standards. Based on the estimated daily intake (EDI), fish samples analysed in this study can be considered safe for human consumption as per the recommended daily dietary allowance limit fixed by various agencies. Continuous monitoring and assessments of fish metal(loid) content are needed to generate more data and safeguard human health.

A field experiment was conducted at Indian Council of Agricultural Research-National Rice Research Institute, Cuttack, Odisha, India in the dry seasons of 2015 and 2016 to assess the water vapor flux (FH 2 O) and its relationship with other climatic variables. The FH 2 O and climatic variables were measured by an eddy covariance system and a micrometeorological observatory. Daily mean FH 2 O during the dry seasons of 2015 and 2016 were 0.009-0.092 g m -2 s -1 and 0.014-0.101 g m -2 s -1 , respectively. Seasonal average FH 2 O was 14.6% higher in 2016 than that in 2015. Diurnal variation for FH 2 O showed a bell-shaped curve with its peak at 13:30-14:00 Indian Standard Time (IST) in both the years. Carbon dioxide flux was found higher with rise in FH 2 O. This relationship was stronger at higher vapor pressure deficit (VPD) (20 ≤ VPD ≤ 40 and VPD > 40 hPa). The FH 2 O showed significant positive correlation with latent heat flux, net radiation flux, photosynthatically active radiation, air, water and soil temperatures, shortwave down and upwell radiations, maximum and minimum temperatures, evaporation, and relative humidity in both the years. Principal component analysis showed that FH 2 O was very close to latent heat flux in both the years (Pearson correlation coefficient close to 1). The two-dimensional observation map of the principal component F1 and F2 showed the observations taken during the vegetative stage and panicle initiation stage, and flowering stage and maturity stage were closer to each other. It can be concluded that the most important climatic variables controlling the FH 2 O were latent heat of vaporization, net radiation, air temperature, soil temperatures, and water temperature.

Land use and land cover (LULC) change have considerable influence on ecosystem services. Assessing change in ecosystem services due to LULC change at different spatial and temporal scales will help to identify suitable management practices for sustaining ecosystem productivity and maintaining the ecological balance. The objective of this study was to investigate variations in ecosystem services in response to LULC change over 27 years in four agro-climatic zones (ACZ) of eastern India using satellite imagery for the year 1989, 1996, 2005, 2011 (Landsat TM) and 2016 (Landsat 8 OLI). The satellite images were classified into six LULC classes, agriculture land, forest, waterbody, wasteland, built-up, and mining area. During the study period (1989 to 2016), forest cover reduced by 5.2%, 13.7%, and 3.6% in Sambalpur, Keonjhar, and Kandhamal districts of Odisha, respectively. In Balasore, agricultural land reduced by 17.2% due to its conversion to built-up land. The value of ecosystem services per unit area followed the order of waterbodies > agricultural land > forests. A different set of indicators, e.g., by explicitly including diversity, could change the rank between these land uses, so the temporal trends within a land use are more important than the absolute values. Total ecosystem services increased by US$ 1296.4 × 10 5 (50.74%), US$ 1100.7 × 10 5 (98.52%), US$ 1867 × 10 5 (61.64%), and US$ 1242.6 × 10 5 (46.13%) for Sambalpur, Balasore, Kandhamal, and Keonjhar, respectively.

Lowland tropical rice-rice system has a unique micrometrological characteristic that affects both energy component and net ecosystem energy. Periodic and seasonal variations of methane (CH 4 ), carbon dioxide (CO 2 ), and energy exchange from irrigated lowland rice-rice ecosystem were studied using open-path eddy covariance (EC) system during the dry (DS) and wet (WS) seasons in 2015. Concurrently, the manual chamber method was employed in nitrous oxide (N 2 O) measurement efflux. Cumulative net ecosystem carbon exchange (NEE) was observed highest (- 232.55 g C m -2 ) during the WS and lowest (- 14.81 g C m -2 ) during wet fallow (WF). Similarly, the cumulative net ecosystem methane exchange (NEME) was found highest (13,456.5 mg CH 4 m -2 ) during the WS and lowest (2014.3 mg CH 4 m -2 ) during the WF. Surface energy fluxes, i.e., sensible (Hs) and latent heat (LE) fluxes, showed a similar trend. With the advancement of time, the ratio of ecosystem respiration (Re) and gross primary production (GPP) increased. The cumulative global warming potential (GWP) for the two cropping seasons including two fallows was 13,224.1 kg CO 2 equivalent ha -1 . The GWP and NEME showed a similar trend as soil enzymes and labile carbon pools in both seasons (except GWP at the harvesting stage in the wet season). The mean NEE exhibited a more negative value with decrease in labile pools from panicle initiation to harvesting stage in the WS. Soil labile C and soil enzymes can be used as an indicator of NEE, NEME, and GWP in lowland rice ecology. Thermal power stations apart from being source of energy supply are causing soil pollution leading to its degradation in fertility and contamination. Fine particle and trace element emissions from energy production in coal-fired thermal power plants are associated with significant adverse effects on human, animal, and soil health. Contamination of soil with cadmium, nickel, copper, lead, arsenic, chromium, and zinc can be a primary route of human exposure to these potentially toxic elements. The environmental evaluation of surrounding soil of thermal power plants in Odisha may serve a model study to get the insight into hazards they are causing. The study investigates the impact of fly ash-fugitive dust (FAFD) deposition from coal-fired thermal power plant emissions on soil properties including trace element concentration, pH, and soil enzymatic activities. Higher FAFD deposition was found in the close proximity of power plants, which led to high pH and greater accumulation of heavy metals. Among the three power plants, in the vicinity of NALCO, higher concentrations of soil organic carbon and nitrogen was observed whereas, higher phosphorus content was recorded in the proximity of NTPC. Multivariate statistical analysis of different variables and their association indicated that FAFD deposition and soil properties were influenced by the source of emissions and distance from source of emission. Pollution in soil profiles and high risk areas were detected and visualized using surface maps based on Kriging interpolation. The concentrations of chromium and arsenic were higher in the soil where FAFD deposition was more. Observance of relatively high concentration of heavy metals like cadmium, lead, nickel, and arsenic and a low concentration of enzymatic activity in proximity to the emission source indicated a possible link with anthropogenic emissions.

Integrated rice-fish culture, an age-old farming system, is a technology which could produce rice and fish sustainably at a time by optimizing scarce resource use through complementary use of land and water. An understanding of microbial processes is important for the management of farming systems as soil microbes are the living part of soil organic matter and play critical roles in soil C and N cycling and ecosystem functioning of farming system. Rice-based integrated farming system model for small and marginal farmers was established in 2001 at Central Rice Research Institute, Cuttack, Odisha. The different enterprises of farming system were rice-fish, fish-fingerlings, fruits, vegetables, rice-fish refuge, and agroforestry. This study was conducted with the objective to assess the soil physicochemical properties, microbial population, carbon and nitrogen fractions, soil enzymatic activity, and productivity of different enterprises. The effect of enterprises induced significant changes in the chemical composition and organic matter which in turn influenced the activities of enzymes (urease, acid, and alkaline phosphatase) involved in the C, N, and P cycles. The different enterprises of long-term rice-based farming system caused significant variations in nutrient content of soil, which was higher in rice-fish refuge followed by rice-fish enterprise. Highest microbial populations and enzymatic properties were recorded in rice-fish refuge system because of waterlogging and reduced condition prolonged in this system leading to less decomposition of organic matter. The maximum alkaline phosphatase, urease, and FDA were observed in rice-fish enterprise. However, highest acid phosphatase and dehydrogenase activity were obtained in vegetable enterprise and fish-fingerlings enterprise, respectively.

In order to identify the viable option of tillage practices in rice-maize-cowpea cropping system that could cut down soil carbon dioxide (CO2) emission, sustain grain yield, and maintain better soil quality in tropical low land rice ecology soil respiration in terms of CO2 emission, labile carbon (C) pools, water-stable aggregate C fractions, and enzymatic activities were investigated in a sandy clay loam soil. Soil respiration is the major pathway of gaseous C efflux from terrestrial systems and acts as an important index of ecosystem functioning. The CO2-C emissions were quantified in between plants and rows throughout the year in rice-maize-cowpea cropping sequence both under conventional tillage (CT) and minimum tillage (MT) practices along with soil moisture and temperature. The CO2-C emissions, as a whole, were 24 % higher in between plants than in rows, and were in the range of 23.4-78.1, 37.1-128.1, and 28.6-101.2 mg m(-2) h(-1) under CT and 10.7-60.3, 17.3-99.1, and 17.2-79.1 mg m(-2) h(-1) under MT in rice, maize, and cowpea, respectively. The CO2-C emission was found highest under maize (44 %) followed by rice (33 %) and cowpea (23 %) irrespective of CT and MT practices. In CT system, the CO2-C emission increased significantly by 37.1 % with respect to MT on cumulative annual basis including fallow. The CO2-C emission per unit yield was at par in rice and cowpea signifying the beneficial effect of MT in maintaining soil quality and reduction of CO2 emission. The microbial biomass C (MBC), readily mineralizable C (RMC), water-soluble C (WSC), and permanganate-oxidizable C (PMOC) were 19.4, 20.4, 39.5, and 15.1 % higher under MT than CT. The C contents in soil aggregate fraction were significantly higher in MT than CT. Soil enzymatic activities like, dehydrogenase, fluorescein diacetate, and β-glucosidase were significantly higher by 13.8, 15.4, and 27.4 % under MT compared to CT. The soil labile C pools, enzymatic activities, and heterotrophic microbial populations were in the order of maize > cowpea > rice, irrespective of the tillage treatments. Environmental sustainability point of view, minimum tillage practices in rice-maize-cowpea cropping system in tropical low land soil could be adopted to minimize CO2-C emission, sustain yield, and maintain soil health.

Changes in the soil labile carbon fractions and soil biochemical properties to elevated carbon dioxide (CO2) and temperature reflect the changes in the functional capacity of soil ecosystems. The belowground root system and root-derived carbon products are the key factors for the rhizospheric carbon dynamics under elevated CO2 condition. However, the relationship between interactive effects of elevated CO2 and temperature on belowground soil carbon accrual is not very clear. To address this issue, a field experiment was laid out to study the changes of carbon allocation in tropical rice soil (Aeric Endoaquept) under elevated CO2 and elevated CO2 + elevated temperature conditions in open top chambers (OTCs). There were significant increase of root biomass by 39 and 44 % under elevated CO2 and elevated CO2 + temperature compared to ambient condition, respectively. A significant increase (55 %) of total organic carbon in the root exudates under elevated CO2 + temperature was noticed. Carbon dioxide enrichment associated with elevated temperature significantly increased soil labile carbon, microbial biomass carbon, and activities of carbon-transforming enzyme like β-glucosidase. Highly significant correlations were noticed among the different soil enzymes and soil labile carbon fractions.

The purpose of this work was to develop and optimize gliclazide-loaded alginate-methyl cellulose mucoadhesive microcapsules by ionotropic gelation using central composite design. The effect of formulation parameters like polymer blend ratio and cross-linker (CaCl(2)) concentration on properties of gliclazide-loaded alginate-methyl cellulose microcapsules like drug encapsulation efficiency and drug release were optimized. The optimized microcapsules were subjected to swelling, mucoadhesive, and in vivo studies. The observed responses coincided well with the predicted values from the optimization technique. The optimized microcapsules showed high drug encapsulation efficiency (83.57 ± 2.59% to 85.52 ± 3.07%) with low T(50%) (time for 50% drug release, 5.68 ± 0.09 to 5.83 ± 0.11 h). The in vitro drug release pattern from optimized microcapsules was found to be controlled-release pattern (zero order) with case II transport release mechanism. Particle sizes of these optimized microcapsules were 0.767 ± 0.085 to 0.937 ± 0.086 mm. These microcapsules also exhibited good mucoadhesive properties. The in vivo studies on alloxan-induced diabetic rats indicated the significant hypoglycemic effect that was observed 12 h after oral administration of optimized mucoadhesive microcapsules. The developed and optimized alginate-methyl cellulose microcapsules are suitable for prolonged systemic absorption of gliclazide to maintain lower blood glucose level and improved patient compliance.

A post tsunami study was conducted to assess the changes in soil properties in the Andaman Island, in India. The present study reported tsunami led conversion of acid soils to saline acid soils and acid sodic soils to acid saline sodic soils in the areas South Andaman inundated during tsunami and permanently receded later and in the low-lying area submerged during high tides. Upon intense leaching acid saline soils and acid saline sodic may further develop typical characteristics of acidic soils and acidic sodic soil, respectively. The soil at Guptapara inundated almost due to tsunami with minimal pyrite oxidation has potential to develop into highly acidic soils upon drainage. The tsunami by and large has modified some depositional layer affecting the salt accumulation to a greater extent and iron to a lesser extent and least to sodicity.

Buccal patches for the delivery of atenolol using sodium alginate with various hydrophilic polymers like carbopol 934 P, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose in various proportions and combinations were fabricated by solvent casting technique. Various physicomechanical parameters like weight variation, thickness, folding endurance, drug content, moisture content, moisture absorption, and various ex vivo mucoadhesion parameters like mucoadhesive strength, force of adhesion, and bond strength were evaluated. An in vitro drug release study was designed, and it was carried out using commercial semipermeable membrane. All these fabricated patches were sustained for 24 h and obeyed first-order release kinetics. Ex vivo drug permeation study was also performed using porcine buccal mucosa, and various drug permeation parameters like flux and lag time were determined.

The fluoride (F) concentration in the coastal aquifers of Bara tract in Bharuch district, Gujarat was determined by potentiometric method using an ion-selective electrode. The fluoride concentration in these aquifers varies between 0.060 to 3.51 mg/L. It was also found that F has a positive correlation with pH and HCO(3)(-) whereas negatively correlated with Ca(2+), indicating that high fluoride in ground water is associated with low calcium content. This suggests that the higher pH of water promotes the leaching of fluoride and thus affects the concentration of fluoride in the ground water. It was also found that there exists no relationship between F, EC, and ground water table from surface in the ground water.

The water samples from the shallow aquifers of Makur, Unnao district, Uttar Pradesh, was analyzed for fluoride content (F( - )) and other water quality parameters such as pH, EC, CO(3) (2-), HCO(3) (-), Cl( - ), Na( + ), Ca(2 + ), Mg(2 + ) and RSC. It was found that the F( - ) concentration of water varied between 1.05 to 13.9 mgl( - 1) which exceeded the maximum desirable limits of 1.0 mgl( - 1) of F( - ) as laid down by BIS and 68% of water exceeded maximum permissible limits of 1.5 mgl( - 1) as prescribed by WHO. The correlation study of fluoride indicated that F( - ) has a significant (p < 0.05) positive relationship with pH (r = +0.59) and RSC (r = 0.54), while a significant negative correlation with Ca+Mg (r = -0.53) and Mg (r = -0.49). The exposure doses of fluoride in infants was found between 0.35 to 3.26 mg kg( - 1)day( - 1) (if dug well water was used) whereas 0.36 to 4.63 mg kg( - 1)day( - 1) (when shallow hand pumps) The exposure doses of water in case of children (20 kg body weight) varied between 0.157 to 1.47 mg kg( - 1)day( - 1) (for dugwell) and 0.162 to 2.08 mg kg( - 1)day( - 1) (for shallow hand pumps) whereas in case of adults (70 kg body weight), it varied between 0.09 to 0.839 mg kg( - 1)day( - 1) (for dugwell) and 0.092 to 1.19 mg kg( - 1)day( - 1) (shallow hand pumps) which is quite high against the standard value of 0.05 mg/kg/day which is the minimum risk level (MRL) calculated by the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR). The maximum exposure dose to fluoride for adults in the study area found to be 23.8 times higher than the ATSDR's MRL.
