Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are a significant cause of morbidity in healthcare systems and are prominently associated with applying urethral catheters, particularly in surgeries. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is extensively utilized in the fabrication of catheters. Biofilms, complex polymeric constructions, provide a protective milieu for cell multiplication and the enhancement of antibiotic resistance. Strategies to counteract biofilm development on medical apparatuses' surfaces incorporate antimicrobial agents such as N,N-dodecyl, and methyl polyethylenimine (DMPEI). This research endeavored to characterize the morphology of PVC and PVC-DMPEI surfaces utilizing Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) and to gauge hydrophobicity through contact angle measurements. Employing Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Candida albicans in adhesion assays enabled the assessment of DMPEI's efficacy in preventing microbial adherence to PVC. Butanol successfully solubilized 2 mg.mL -1 DMPEI without altering the PVC structure. SEM results substantiated the formation of a DMPEI layer on the PVC surface, which led to decreased surface roughness, as validated by AFM, and increased hydrophilicity, as demonstrated by contact angle evaluations. E. coli, S. aureus, and C. albicans exhibited significant adhesion reduction, 89.3%, 94.3%, and 86.6% on PVC-DMPEI surfaces. SEM visualizations confirmed reduced cellular colonization on PVC-DMPEI and highlighted considerable morphological modifications in E. coli. Consequently, DMPEI films effectively minimize the adhesion of E. coli, S. aureus, and C. albicans on PVC surfaces. DMPEI, with its potential as a protective coating for innovative medical devices, promises to inhibit biofilm adherence effectively., (© 2023. Background: The aim of the present study was to assess if genetic polymorphisms in tooth agenesis (TA)-related genes are associated with craniofacial morphological patterns., Methods: This cross-sectional, multi-center, genetic study evaluated 594 orthodontic Brazilians patients. The presence or absence of TA was determined by analysis of panoramic radiography. The patients were classified according to their skeletal malocclusion and facial growth pattern by means of digital cephalometric analysis. Genomic DNA was extracted from squamous epithelial cells of buccal mucosa and genetic polymorphisms in MSX1 (rs1042484), PAX9 (rs8004560), TGF-α (rs2902345), FGF3 (rs1893047), FGF10 (rs900379), and FGF13 (rs12838463, rs5931572, and rs5974804) were genotyped by polymerase chain reaction using TaqMan chemistry and end-point analysis., Results: Genotypes (p = 0.038) and allele (p = 0.037) distributions for the FGF3 rs1893047 were significantly different according to the skeletal malocclusion. Carrying at least one G allele increased in more than two times the chance of presenting skeletal class III malocclusion (OR = 2.21, CI 95% = 1.14-4.32; p = 0.017). There was no association between another skeletal craniofacial pattern and some polymorphism assessed in the present study., Conclusion: Our results suggest that the genetic polymorphism rs1893047 in FGF3 might contribute to variations in the craniofacial sagittal pattern.

The aim of this study was to perform linear measurements and assess morphometric indices of equines of the Pantanal race of different ages in the municipality of Poconé-Mato Grosso. Fifty-seven clinically healthy male and female horses between 1 and 19 years of age were selected and divided into groups by sex: 41 animals males and 17 animals femeles, and age groups: group 1 (nine animals up to 12 months of age), group 2 (eight animals from 12 to 24 months), group 3 (15 animals from 24 to 48 months), and group 4 (27 animals older than 48 months). With the aid of a hypometer, the following linear measures were carried out: height at the withers and croup, and body length. The thoracic circumference and cinnamon were measured with a tape. From these measures, the following zootechnical indices were calculated: estimated weight, relationship between height at the whithers and height at the croup (RHC), dactyl thoracic (DTI), body index (BI), forming index (FI), load index 1 (LI1), load index 2 (LI2), body relative index (BRI), compactness index 1 (COI1), compactness index 2 (COI2), load index in cinnamon (LIC). In general, horses of the Pantanal breed are hipometric and longilinear; only the adult group of animals were mediolinear, with a good relationship between the withers and croup. They can be used with a saddle or take traction, with the ability to move their limbs slowing down with age. An influence of sex and age on the analyzed variables was observed.

Drinking water production may generate significant amounts of sludge, which may be contaminated with various metals. For the first time, the mobility/lability of contaminants from two water treatment sludge piles in the Juturnaíba Reservoir was evaluated by applying two geochemical approaches: sequential extractions and attenuation of concentrations model. Both procedures were applied to evaluate the mobility/lability of Al, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, and Zn on samples collected in the sludge piles and in the neighborhood of both water treatment plants. The results show that aluminum presents considerably higher concentrations in the sediments close to the sludge piles, with more labile phases; however, the attenuation of concentrations model indicates little spreading of this contaminant in the reservoir. Manganese was shown to be severely depleted in the sludge, indicating that it can be leached away, due to the reducing conditions of the pile. The other elements showed low concentrations and were shown not to affect the concentrations in the reservoir. While the geochemical fractionation indicates the possibility of dissolution to the water column, the attenuation of concentrations model gives information on the spatial dispersion of the contaminants, constituting interesting complementary approaches.

Aim: To evaluate the efficiency of fluoride-releasing adhesives for the prevention of secondary caries on in-vitro tests., Materials and Methods: This study was performed according to the PRISMA checklist. The bibliographic research was performed to identify in-vitro studies between January 2000 and September 2017. The selected studies were submitted to bias risk assessment and data extraction. In the meta-analysis the data were evaluated using Review Manager Software., Results: The 11 studies that met all inclusion criteria showed that the most common risks of bias were: absence of the sample size calculation description, absence of the single operator protocol and blind operation of the test machine. The meta-analysis was performed with six studies that used polarised light microscopy in order to quantify the mineral content of dentine and presented the values as means and standard deviations., Conclusions: Most of the authors presented that the fluoride-containing adhesive systems had a significant effect to reduce in-vitro secondary caries. The meta-analysis did not present statistical difference between fluoride-free and fluoride-containing adhesive systems. The artificial caries challenge methodology may have affected the results.
