Abstract

Nowadays, large quantities of multimedia data are generated by various applications on smartphones, drones and other devices. Facilitating retrieval from these multimedia collections requires (a) effective media representation and (b) efficient indexing and query processing approaches. Recently, the MuseHash approach was proposed, which can effectively represent a variety of modalities, improving on previous hashing-based approaches. However, the interaction of the MuseHash approach with existing indexing and query processing approaches has not been considered. Abstract

Diffusion Models have become increasingly popular in recent years and their applications span a wide range of fields. This survey focuses on the use of diffusion models in computer vision, specially in the branch of image transformations. The objective of this survey is to provide an overview of state-of-the-art applications of diffusion models in image transformations, including image inpainting, super-resolution, restoration, translation, and editing. This survey presents a selection of notable papers and repositories including practical applications of diffusion models for image transformations. The applications are presented in a practical and concise manner, facilitating the understanding of concepts behind diffusion models and how they function. Abstract

Music enhances consumer wellbeing. Often used as entertainment and atmospherics in various servicescapes, in the advent of COVID-19, live music experiences as the world knew it changed for the foreseeable future. In this article, we investigate the way young consumers engage with virtual live music events (VLME) during COVID-19, by using logistic regression modeling. We present factors that determine the probability to attend a VLME during COVID-19, to attend a VLME post-COVID-19, and to have a willingness to pay (WTP) for a VLME. In the Internet age, VLME could represent a post-COVID opportunity for the cultural sector, if consumers consider it as a real option, and not only a second choice in a pandemic context.

To support radiologists in their decision-making regarding women breast cancer diagnosis based on mammographies, this paper addresses three challenges posed by a Clinical Decision Support System (CDSS) for breast cancer screening, diagnosis, and reporting: multimodality (via textual, graphical, and two-dimensional gestural interaction), usability (via human-computer interactions methods such as knowledge elicitation interviews, scenario-focused questionnaires, multi-fidelity prototyping and user testing), and flexibility (via selected image processing techniques ensuring manual and semi-automatic annotation of breast cancer findings based on radiologists' gestures)

Abstract

This article describes Pictonaut, a novel method to automatically synthetise animated shots from motion picture footage. Its results are editable (backgrounds, characters, lighting, etc.) with conventional 3D software, and they have the finish of professional 2D animation. Rather than addressing the challenge solely as an image translation problem, a hybrid approach combining multi-person 3D human pose estimation and GANs is taken. Sub-sampled video frames are processed with OpenPose and SMPLify-X to obtain the 3D parameters of the pose (body, hands and face expression) of all depicted characters. The captured parameters are retargeted into manually selected 3D models, cel shaded to mimic the style of a 2D cartoon. The results of sub-sampled frames are interpolated to generate a complete and smooth motion for all the characters. The background is cartoonized with a GAN. Abstract

The use of large-scale supercomputing architectures is a hard requirement for scientific computing Big-Data applications. An example is genomics analytics, where millions of data transformations and tests per patient need to be done to find relevant clinical indicators. Therefore, to ensure open and broad access to high-performance technologies, governments, and academia are pushing toward the introduction of novel computing architectures in large-scale scientific environments. This is the case of RISC-V, an open-source and royalty-free instruction-set architecture. To evaluate such technologies, here we present the Variant-Interaction Analytics use case benchmarking suite and datasets. Through this use case, we search for possible genetic interactions using computational and statistical methods, providing a representative case for heavy ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) data processing. Current implementations are implemented in x86-based supercomputers (e.g. MareNostrum-IV at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC)), and future steps propose RISC-V as part of the next MareNostrum generations. Abstract

Compared to other animal movements, prospecting by adult individuals for a future breeding site is commonly overlooked. Prospecting influences the decision of where to breed and has consequences on fitness and lifetime reproductive success. By analysing movements of 31 satellite- and GPS-tracked gull and tern populations belonging to 14 species in Europe and North America, we examined the occurrence and factors explaining prospecting by actively breeding birds. Prospecting in active breeders occurred in 85.7% of studied species, across 61.3% of sampled populations. Prospecting was more common in populations with frequent inter-annual changes of breeding sites and among females. These results contradict theoretical models which predict that prospecting is expected to evolve in relatively predictable and stable environments. More long-term tracking studies are needed to identify factors affecting patterns of prospecting in different environments and understand the consequences of prospecting on fitness at the individual and population level.

Abstract

This work extends the bag-of-paths model by introducing a weighting of the length of the paths in the network, provided by a Poisson probability distribution. The main advantage of this approach is that it allows to tune the mean path length parameter which is most relevant for the application at hand. Various quantities of interest, such as the probability of drawing a path from the bag of paths, or the join probability of sampling any path connecting two nodes of interest, can easily be computed in closed form from this model. In this context, a new distance measure between nodes of a network, considering a weighting factor on the length of the paths, is defined. Experiments on semi-supervised classification tasks show that the introduced distance measure provides competitive results compared to other state-of-the-art methods. Moreover, a new interpretation of the logarithmic communicability similarity measure is proposed in terms of the new model.

Abstract

To consistently compare gesture recognizers under identical conditions, a systematic procedure for comparative testing should investigate how the number of templates, the number of sampling points, the number of fingers, and their configuration with other hand parameters such as hand joints, palm, and fingertips impact performance. This paper defines a systematic procedure for comparing recognizers using a series of test definitions, i.e. an ordered list of test cases with controlled variables common to all test cases. For each test case, its accuracy is measured by the recognition rate and its responsiveness by the execution time. This procedure is applied to six state-of-the-art template-based gesture recognizers on SHREC2019, a gesture dataset that contains simple and complex hand gestures tested and is largely used in the literature for competition in a user-independent scenario, and on Jackknife-lm, another challenging dataset. The results of the procedure identify the configurations in which each recognizer is the most accurate or the fastest.

Abstract

The present work investigates a new relative entropy-regularized algorithm for solving the optimal transport on a graph problem within the randomized shortest paths formalism. More precisely, a unit flow is injected into a set of input nodes and collected from a set of output nodes with specified marginals, while minimizing the expected transportation cost, together with a paths-based relative entropy regularization term, providing a randomized routing policy. The main advantage of this new formulation is the fact that it can easily accommodate edge flow capacity constraints which commonly occur in real-world problems. The resulting optimal routing policy, i.e., the probability distribution of following an edge in each node, is Markovian and is computed after constraining the input and output flows to the prescribed marginal probabilities. In addition, experimental comparisons with other recently developed techniques show that the distance measure between nodes derived from the introduced model provides competitive results on semi-supervised classification tasks.
