All in-person nurse practitioner (NP) student clinical activities were suspended in the spring of 2020 due to COVID-19. This posed a unique summer semester challenge, as students needed to complete an objective structured clinical examination (OSCE). The traditional face-to-face OSCE was revised into a virtual format using a teleconferencing platform and included the following learning objectives: obtain the medical history, describe a focused physical examination, formulate differential diagnoses, and develop an appropriate plan of care. Together with the Health Education Center, students met with a standardized patient (SP) virtually. All elements of the virtual OSCE were the same as the traditional OSCE, except students were required to demonstrate their clinical assessment skills by verbalizing to faculty what they would examine if the visit were in-person. When finished, all participants were invited to complete a survey about their experience. Survey findings revealed that most faculty and students considered the interactive virtual OSCE an extremely effective tool for assessing communication and history taking skills, differential diagnosis, and management of patients. All SPs felt comfortable communicating with the students and felt that the virtual OSCE was a very effective way to assess their interpersonal skills of students. The virtual OSCE also served as an opportunity to incorporate telehealth competencies into a simulation experience for students. This innovative distance learning activity facilitated effective virtual evaluation of clinical competence in NP students and all stakeholders expressed satisfaction with the experience. One challenge that comes with studying eye movement behavior is deciding how to clean the eye movement data (e.g., fixation durations) before conducting analyses. Reading researchers must decide which data cleaning methods they will use and which thresholds they will set to remove eye movements that are not reflective of lexical processing. The purpose of this project was to determine what data cleaning methods are typically used and if there are any consequences of using different data cleaning methods. In the first study, an analysis of 192 recently published articles indicated that there is inconsistency in the reporting and application of data cleaning methods. In the second study, three different data cleaning methods were applied based on the literature analysis in the first study. Analyses were conducted to determine the impact of different data cleaning methods on three commonly studied effects in reading research (frequency, predictability, and length). Overall, standardized estimates decreased for each effect when more data were removed; however, removing more data also resulted in decreased variance. As a result, effects remained significant with each data cleaning method, and simulated power remained high for both a moderate and small sample size. Effect sizes remained consistent for most effects but decreased for the length effect as more data were removed. The self-paced reading paradigm has been popular and widely used in psycholinguistic research for several decades. The tool described in this paper, FAB (Forward and Backward reading), is a tool created to hopefully and maximally reduce the coding demands and simplify the operation costs for experimental researchers and clinical researchers who are doing experimental work, in their designing, coding, implementing, and analyzing self-paced reading tasks. Its basis in web languages (HTML, JavaScript) also promotes experimental implementation and material sharing in our era of open science. In addition, FAB has a unique forward-and-backward mode that can track regressive-like behaviors that are usually only recordable using eye-tracking or mouse-tracking equipment. In this paper, the specific application and usage of FAB is demonstrated in one laboratory and two online validation experiments. Oil palm agriculture has caused extensive land cover and land use changes that have adversely affected tropical landscapes and ecosystems. However, monitoring and assessment of oil palm plantation areas to support sustainable management is costly and labour-intensive. This study used an unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) to map smallholder farms and applied multi-criteria analysis to data generated from orthomosaics, to provide a set of sustainability indicators for the farms. Images were acquired from a UAV, with structure from motion (SfM) photogrammetry then used to produce orthomosaics and digital elevation models of the farm areas. Some of the inherent problems using high spatial resolution imagery for land cover classification were overcome by using texture analysis and geographic object-based image analysis (OBIA). Six spatially explicit environmental metrics were developed using multi-criteria analysis and used to generate sustainability indicator layers from the UAV data. The SfM and OBIA approach provided an accurate, high-resolution (~5 cm) image-based reconstruction of smallholder farm landscapes, with an overall classification accuracy of 89%. The multi-criteria analysis highlighted areas with lower sustainability values, which should be considered targets for adoption of sustainable management practices. The results of this work suggest that UAVs are a cost-effective tool for sustainability assessments of oil palm plantations, but there remains the need to plan surveys and image processing workflows carefully. Generalized linear mixed models (GLMMs) have great potential to deal with count data in single-case experimental designs (SCEDs). However, applied researchers have faced challenges in making various statistical decisions when using such advanced statistical techniques in their own research. This study focused on a critical issue by investigating the selection of an appropriate distribution to handle different types of count data in SCEDs due to overdispersion and/or zero-inflation. To achieve this, I proposed two model selection frameworks, one based on calculating information criteria (AIC and BIC) and another based on utilizing a multistage-model selection procedure. Four data scenarios were simulated including Poisson, negative binominal (NB), zero-inflated Poisson (ZIP), and zero-inflated negative binomial (ZINB). The same set of models (i.e., Poisson, NB, ZIP, and ZINB) were fitted for each scenario. In the simulation, I evaluated 10 model selection strategies within the two frameworks by assessing the model selection bias and its consequences on the accuracy of the treatment effect estimates and inferential statistics. Based on the simulation results and previous work, I provide recommendations regarding which model selection methods should be adopted in different scenarios. Attentional engagement is known to vary on a moment-to-moment basis. However, few self-report methods can effectively capture dynamic fluctuations in attentional engagement over time. In the current paper, we evaluated the utility of stimulated recall, a method wherein individuals are asked to remember their subjective states while using a mnemonic cue, for the measurement of temporal changes in attentional engagement. Participants were asked to watch a video lecture, during which we assessed their in-the-moment levels of attentional engagement using intermittent thought probes. Then, we used stimulated recall by cueing participants with short video clips from the lecture to retrospectively assess the levels of attentional engagement they had experienced when they first watched those clips within the lecture. Experiment 1 assessed the statistical overlap between in-the-moment and video-stimulated ratings. Experiment 2 assessed the generalizability of video-stimulated recall across different types of lectures. Experiment 3 assessed the impact of presenting video-stimulated probe clips in non-chronological order. Experiment 4 assessed the effect of video-stimulated recall on its own. Across all experiments, we found statistically robust correspondence between in-the-moment and video-stimulated ratings of attentional engagement, illustrating a strong convergence between these two methods of assessment. Neurofeedback techniques provide participants immediate feedback on neuronal signals, enabling them to modulate their brain activity. This technique holds promise to unveil brain-behavior relationship and offers opportunities for neuroenhancement. Establishing causal relationships between modulated brain activity and behavioral improvements requires rigorous experimental designs, including appropriate control groups and large samples. Our primary objective was to examine whether a single neurofeedback session, designed to enhance working memory through the modulation of theta or high-alpha frequencies, elicits specific changes in electrophysiological and cognitive outcomes. Additionally, we explored predictors of successful neuromodulation. A total of 101 healthy adults were assigned to groups trained to increase frontal theta, parietal high alpha, or random frequencies (active control group). We measured resting-state EEG, working memory performance, and self-reported psychological states before and after one neurofeedback session. Although our analyses revealed improvements in electrophysiological and behavioral outcomes, these gains were not specific to the experimental groups. An increase in the frequency targeted by the training has been observed for the theta and high alpha groups, but training designed to increase randomly selected frequencies appears to induce more generalized neuromodulation compared with targeting a specific frequency. Among all the predictors of neuromodulation examined, resting theta and high alpha amplitudes predicted specifically the increase of those frequencies during the training. These results highlight the challenge of integrating a control group based on enhancing randomly selected frequency bands and suggest potential avenues for optimizing interventions (e.g., by including a control group trained in both up- and down-regulation)., (© 2024. The many benefits of online research and the recent emergence of open-source eye-tracking libraries have sparked an interest in transferring time-consuming and expensive eye-tracking studies from the lab to the web. In the current study, we validate online webcam-based eye-tracking by conceptually replicating three robust eye-tracking studies (the cascade effect, n = 134, the novelty preference, n = 45, and the visual world paradigm, n = 32) online using the participant's webcam as eye-tracker with the WebGazer.js library. We successfully replicated all three effects, although the effect sizes of all three studies shrank by 20-27%. The visual world paradigm was conducted both online and in the lab, using the same participants and a standard laboratory eye-tracker. The results showed that replication per se could not fully account for the effect size shrinkage, but that the shrinkage was also due to the use of online webcam-based eye-tracking, which is noisier. In conclusion, we argue that eye-tracking studies with relatively large effects that do not require extremely high precision (e.g., studies with four or fewer large regions of interest) can be done online using the participant's webcam. We release a database of cloze probability values, predictability ratings, and computational estimates for a sample of 205 English sentences (1726 words), aligned with previously released word-by-word reading time data (both self-paced reading and eye-movement records; Frank et al., Behavior Research Methods, 45(4), 1182-1190. 2013) and EEG responses (Frank et al., Brain and Language, 140, 1-11. 2015). Our analyses show that predictability ratings are the best predictors of the EEG signal (N400, P600, LAN) self-paced reading times, and eye movement patterns, when spillover effects are taken into account. The computational estimates are particularly effective at explaining variance in the eye-tracking data without spillover. Cloze probability estimates have decent overall psychometric accuracy and are the best predictors of early fixation patterns (first fixation duration). Extensive research conducted in controlled laboratory settings has prompted an inquiry into how results can be generalized to real-world situations influenced by the subjects' actions. Virtual reality lends itself ideally to investigating complex situations but requires accurate classification of eye movements, especially when combining it with time-sensitive data such as EEG. We recorded eye-tracking data in virtual reality and classified it into gazes and saccades using a velocity-based classification algorithm, and we cut the continuous data into smaller segments to deal with varying noise levels, as introduced in the REMoDNav algorithm. Furthermore, we corrected for participants' translational movement in virtual reality. Various measures, including visual inspection, event durations, and the velocity and dispersion distributions before and after gaze onset, indicate that we can accurately classify the continuous, free-exploration data. Combining the classified eye-tracking with the EEG data, we generated fixation-onset event-related potentials (ERPs) and event-related spectral perturbations (ERSPs), providing further evidence for the quality of the eye-movement classification and timing of the onset of events. Finally, investigating the correlation between single trials and the average ERP and ERSP identified that fixation-onset ERSPs are less time sensitive, require fewer repetitions of the same behavior, and are potentially better suited to study EEG signatures in naturalistic settings. Utilizing a novel computerized task, we aimed to examine whether social anxiety symptoms would be related to individual differences in facial emotion recognition (FER) in a sample of autistic male adolescents and young adults without intellectual disability. Results indicated that social anxiety and IQ predicted poorer FER, irrespective of specific emotion type. When probing specific effects within emotion and condition types, social anxiety impacted surprise and disgust FER during a truncated viewing condition and not full viewing condition. Collectively, results suggest that social anxiety in autism may play a larger role in FER than previously thought. Future work should consider the role of social anxiety within autism as a factor that may meaningfully relate to FER assessment and intervention., (© 2023. Purpose: Cerebral arteriovenous malformations (AVM) represent focal abnormal areas of low resistance circulation which render the peri-nidal neuronal tissue susceptible to ischemia. The post-excision cerebral perfusion surge can result in hyperaemic complications.We hypothesised that Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS)-guided perioperative management can aid in the prediction and prevention of perioperative complications in patients presenting for surgical excision of cerebral AVMs. We also intended to identify a threshold value of regional cerebral oxygen saturation (rScO 2 ) to predict the incidence of perioperative complications., Methods: This was a prospective observational study involving patients undergoing elective supratentorial AVM resection surgeries. Intraoperative rScO 2 and hemodynamic monitoring were done and continued for postoperatively for 12 h. Any drift in rScO 2 by > 12% from baseline was managed as per study protocol and perioperative adverse events were recorded and analyzed. Post surgery,for analytical purpose patients were categorized into two groups, Group A - patients without complications and Group B - patients who had complications postoperatively., Results: Twenty-five patients presenting for surgical excision of cerebral AVM were recruited for this study of which 9 patients had postoperative adverse events and were allocated to group B. The ipsilateral mean rScO 2 at the time of complication (Pc) was significantly lower in Group B than in group A [62.08 ± 9.33 vs.70.52 ± 7.17; p = 0.04]. The mean ipsilateral rScO 2 drift from N2- N5 (i.e., post excision) was significantly higher in Group B than in Group A [12.01 ± 2.63% vs. 4.98 ± 5.7%;p = 0.02]. Mean ipsilateral rScO 2 Drift ratio (N5 :N2) was significantly higher in group B as compared to group A [1.32 ± 0.01 vs. 1.01 ± 0.06;p < 0.001]. In the immediate post excision phase, the ipsilateral mean rScO 2 was significantly higher in Group B at the post excision time point compared to Group A [ 83.03 ± 6.08 vs. 73.52 ± 7.07;p < 0.01)]. The mean ipsilateral rScO 2 drift from N1-N6 (i.e., postoperatively) was significantly higher in Group B as compared to Group A [14.96 ± 0.080% vs. 6.88 ± 4.5% ; p < 0.01]. Similarly, the Mean Ipsilateral rScO 2 Drift ratio (N6:N1) was significantly lower in group B as compared to group A [2.17 ± 0.02 vs. 1.05 ± 0.03 ;p < 0.0001]., Conclusions: In patients undergoing cerebral AVM resection, a post-resection ipsilateral rScO2 increase by > 12% with a drift ratio of > 1.3 could signify cerebral hyperemia. A postoperative ipsilateral rScO2 drift > 14.5% with a drift ratio of 2.1 from the baseline is associated with postoperative complications in our study. The stone density (SD) is not the same in all parts of the stone due to the heterogeneous nature of the stone and the shock wave (SW) passes through tissues of many different densities until it reaches the stone. These factors affect the success of Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL). We aimed to evaluate the effect of the Variation Coefficient of Stone Density (VCSD) and Renal Cortical Tickness (RCT) on the success of ESWL. Between 2020 and 2023, 510 patients who underwent ESWL were divided into 2 groups treatment success (n:304) and treatment failure (n:206). Non-Contrast Computed Tomography (NCCT) imaging values of hydronephrosis degree of the kidney, stone location, stone volume (SV), stone-skin distance (SSD), SD, Standard deviation of Stone Density (SDSD), VCSD, RCT, Soft-Tissue Thickness (STT), Muscle Thickness (MT) were analyzed. VCSD value was obtained by dividing SDSD by SD. Along the SW, tissues were divided into three components: kidney (renal cortex), muscle and other soft tissues. RCT, MT and SSD were measured at three different angles (0°, 45°, and 90°) and these 3 lengths were averaged. In univariate analysis, Body Mass Index (BMI), SV, SD, VCSD, SSD, RCT and STT were demonstrated to affect ESWL success. In multivariate analysis, low BMI, SV, SD, RCT and large VCSD were significant independent predictors of ESWL success. Among these parameters, VCSD had the highest prediction accuracy, followed by SD, SV, RCT and BMI, respectively. Musicians display a variety of auditory perceptual benefits relative to people with little or no musical training; these benefits are collectively referred to as the "musician advantage." Importantly, musicians consistently outperform nonmusicians for tasks relating to pitch, but there are mixed reports as to musicians outperforming nonmusicians for timbre-related tasks. Due to their experience manipulating the timbre of their instrument or voice in performance, we hypothesized that musicians would be more sensitive to acoustic context effects stemming from the spectral changes in timbre across a musical context passage (played by a string quintet then filtered) and a target instrument sound (French horn or tenor saxophone; Experiment 1). Additionally, we investigated the role of a musician's primary instrument of instruction by recruiting French horn and tenor saxophone players to also complete this task (Experiment 2). Consistent with the musician advantage literature, musicians exhibited superior pitch discrimination to nonmusicians. Contrary to our main hypothesis, there was no difference between musicians and nonmusicians in how spectral context effects shaped instrument sound categorization. Little is known about substance use among women with infertility, yet substance use has implications for fertility and pregnancy. The purpose was to estimate the prevalence of substance use among women with infertility and examine whether substance use was associated with psychiatric symptoms, active attempts to conceive, and engagement in fertility treatments. Eligible patients were from a single healthcare system who received a female infertility diagnosis within the past 2 years. Participants (n = 188) completed an online questionnaire regarding substance use, psychiatric symptoms, attempts to conceive, and fertility treatments. The prevalence of hazardous alcohol use, any cannabis use, and hazardous cannabis use were 30.3%, 30.9%, and 8.5%, respectively. Hazardous alcohol use was not associated with psychiatric symptoms (p > .05). Those with any cannabis use were more likely to have higher depression scores than those without (p = .02). Those with hazardous cannabis use were more likely to have higher depression scores (p = .001) and higher anxiety scores (p = .03). Substance use was not associated with actively trying to conceive. Those pursuing fertility treatments had a lower percentage engaging in hazardous alcohol use compared to those not pursuing fertility treatments (19.0% vs. 36.3%, p = .02). Substance use among women with infertility is common. Hazardous cannabis use was associated with greater psychiatric symptoms, suggesting that cannabis may be used to cope with distress. Pursuing fertility treatments may serve as a protective factor for hazardous alcohol use. Clinicians treating patients with infertility may want to screen for substance use., (© 2023. The future is bound to bring rapid methodological changes to psychological research. One such promising candidate is the use of webcam-based eye tracking. Earlier research investigating the quality of online eye-tracking data has found increased spatial and temporal error compared to infrared recordings. Our studies expand on this work by investigating how this spatial error impacts researchers' abilities to study psychological phenomena. We carried out two studies involving emotion-attention interaction tasks, using four participant samples. In each study, one sample involved typical in-person collection of infrared eye-tracking data, and the other involved online collection of webcam-based data. We had two main findings: First, we found that the online data replicated seven of eight in-person results, although the effect sizes were just 52% [42%, 62%] the size of those seen in-person. Second, explaining the lack of replication in one result, we show how online eye tracking is biased toward recording more gaze points near the center of participants' screen, which can interfere with comparisons if left unchecked. Overall, our results suggest that well-powered online eye-tracking research is highly feasible, although researchers must exercise caution, collecting more participants and potentially adjusting their stimulus designs or analytic procedures., (© 2023. In this study, we present TURead, an eye movement dataset of silent and oral sentence reading in Turkish, an agglutinative language with a shallow orthography understudied in reading research. TURead provides empirical data to investigate the relationship between morphology and oculomotor control. We employ a target-word approach in which target words are manipulated by word length and by the addition of two commonly used suffixes in Turkish. The dataset contains well-established eye movement variables; prelexical characteristics such as vowel harmony and bigram-trigram frequencies and word features, such as word length, predictability, frequency, eye voice span measures, Cloze test scores of the root word and suffix predictabilities, as well as the scores obtained from two working memory tests. We evaluated the contribution of place of birth to ethnocultural inequality in pregnancy outcomes. We analyzed a cohort of 1,487,723 births between 1998 and 2019 among minority Anglophones and majority Francophones in Quebec, Canada. We estimated the association (adjusted risk ratio, RR; 95% confidence interval, CI) of language with preterm birth and stillbirth, and incorporated interaction terms to determine the contribution of place of birth and distance traveled. Compared with Francophones, minority Anglophones had a greater risk of preterm birth (RR 1.03; 95% CI 1.01-1.06) and were less likely to deliver farther from home (RR 0.95; 95% CI 0.94-0.95). Anglophones who delivered close to home had a higher risk of preterm birth (RR 1.07; 95% CI 1.04-1.11), whereas Anglophones who delivered farther had a lower risk (RR 0.69; 95% CI 0.64-0.75). Remote eye tracking with automated corneal reflection provides insights into the emergence and development of cognitive, social, and emotional functions in human infants and non-human primates. However, because most eye-tracking systems were designed for use in human adults, the accuracy of eye-tracking data collected in other populations is unclear, as are potential approaches to minimize measurement error. For instance, data quality may differ across species or ages, which are necessary considerations for comparative and developmental studies. Here we examined how the calibration method and adjustments to areas of interest (AOIs) of the Tobii TX300 changed the mapping of fixations to AOIs in a cross-species longitudinal study. We tested humans (N = 119) at 2, 4, 6, 8, and 14 months of age and macaques (Macaca mulatta; N = 21) at 2 weeks, 3 weeks, and 6 months of age. In all groups, we found improvement in the proportion of AOI hits detected as the number of successful calibration points increased, suggesting calibration approaches with more points may be advantageous. Spatially enlarging and temporally prolonging AOIs increased the number of fixation-AOI mappings, suggesting improvements in capturing infants' gaze behaviors; however, these benefits varied across age groups and species, suggesting different parameters may be ideal, depending on the population studied. In sum, to maximize usable sessions and minimize measurement error, eye-tracking data collection and extraction approaches may need adjustments for the age groups and species studied. Remote view eye-tracking systems are prone to errors when used on spectacle wearers due to reflections from the lenses and frame that result in inaccurate tracking. Traditionally, these trackers are situated below a computer monitor and the viewer's eye moments are recorded while they view the screen. Reflections may be influenced by the pantoscopic tilt of the spectacles, whereby the tilt angle causes incident light to be reflected to the camera. To overcome this problem, we propose mounting the tracker above the monitor to avoid these reflections and test the accuracy and precision of subjects with single vision spectacles, multifocals, and no correction, using both mounting positions. Experimental results showed that this alternate position had overall worse accuracy (4.06° ± 0.13) and precision (0.67° ± 0.05) compared to the standard configuration (2.15° ± 0.06 vs. 0.50° ± 0.03), with more invalid readings (5.91 vs. 19.19%) for single vision lens wearers. Multifocals performed better for the top-mounting position for the top portion of the monitor, suggesting higher-order aberrations from the bottom portion of the lens negatively impact data quality. Higher pantoscopic tilt angles displayed an improved accuracy for this alternate position (r (9) = - 0.69, p = 0.02), with superior accuracy for tilt angles greater than 14° compared to the standard configuration. The current work presents the very first eye-tracking corpus of natural reading by Chinese-English bilinguals, whose two languages entail different writing systems and orthographies. Participants read an entire novel in these two languages, presented in paragraphs on screen. Half of the participants first read half of the novel in their native language (Simplified Chinese) and then the rest of the novel in their second language (English), while the other half read in the reverse language order. This article presents some important basic descriptive statistics of reading times and compares the difference between reading in the two languages. However, this unique eye-tracking corpus also allows the exploration of theories of language processing and bilingualism. Importantly, it provides a solid and reliable ground for studying the difference between Eastern and Western languages, understanding the impact and consequences of having a completely different first language on bilingual processing. Language researchers view utterance planning as implicit decision-making: producers must choose the words, sentence structures, and various other linguistic features to communicate their message. To date, much of the research on utterance planning has focused on situations in which the speaker knows the full message to convey. Less is known about circumstances in which speakers begin utterance planning before they are certain about their message. In three picture-naming experiments, we used a novel paradigm to examine how speakers plan utterances before a full message is known. In Experiments 1 and 2, participants viewed displays showing two pairs of objects, followed by a cue to name one pair. In an Overlap condition, one object appeared in both pairs, providing early information about one of the objects to name. In a Different condition, there was no object overlap. Across both spoken and typed responses, participants tended to name the overlapping target first in the Overlap condition, with shorter initiation latencies compared with other utterances. Experiment 3 used a semantically constraining question to provide early information about the upcoming targets, and participants tended to name the more likely target first in their response. These results suggest that in situations of uncertainty, producers choose word orders that allow them to begin early planning. Producers prioritize message components that are certain to be needed and continue planning the rest when more information becomes available. Social avoidance behavior (SAB) produces impairment in multiple domains and contributes to the development and maintenance of several psychiatric disorders. Social behaviors such as SAB are influenced by approach-avoidance (AA) motivational responses to affective facial expressions. Notably, affective facial expressions communicate varying degrees of social reward signals (happiness), social threat signals (anger), or social reward-threat conflict signals (co-occurring happiness and anger). SAB is associated with dysregulated modulation of automatic approach-avoidance (AA) motivational responses exclusively to social reward-threat conflict signals. However, no neuroimaging research has characterized SAB-related modulation of automatic and subjective AA motivational responses to social reward-threat conflict signals. We recruited 30 adults reporting clinical, moderate, or minimal SAB based on questionnaire cutoff scores. SAB groups were matched on age range and gender. During fMRI scanning, participants completed implicit and subjective approach-avoidance tasks (AATs), which involved more incidental or more explicit evaluation of facial expressions that parametrically varied in social reward signals (e.g., 50% Happy ), social threat signals (e.g., 50% Angry ), or social reward-threat conflict signals (e.g., 50% Happy + 50% Angry ). In the implicit AAT, SAB was associated with slower automatic avoidance actions and weaker amygdala-pgACC connectivity exclusively as a function of social reward-threat conflict signals. In the subjective AAT, SAB was associated with smaller increases in approach ratings, smaller decreases in avoidance ratings, and weaker dlPFC-pgACC connectivity exclusively in response to social reward-threat conflict signals. Thus, SAB is associated with dysregulated modulation of automatic and subjective AA motivational sensitivity to social reward-threat conflict signals, which may be facilitated by overlapping neural systems., (© 2022. Via two reading experiments, this exploratory study examined the effects of over-and under-specified linguistic input on L2 online processing of Chinese referring expressions (REs). In each experiment, a group of advanced L2 Chinese speakers (all with Uyghurs as L1) and a control group of native Chinese speakers read 48 sets of 4 sentence pairs with each set including one sentence pair containing referential underspecification (ambiguity) and one pair containing overspecification (redundancy). An analysis of the two groups' reaction time (RT) using mixed-effects linear modelling reveals that underspecification had no effect on native Chinese speakers in both experiments, and overspecification also had no effect in the form of a redundant size noun modifier in Experiment 1 but showed a facilitating effect in the form of a color noun modifier in Experiment 2. In contrast, L2 Chinese speakers were significantly disrupted by underspecification in both experiments but not by overspecification. The results seem to support the hypothesis that L2 processing is constraint-based. Tentative research and pedagogical implications of the findings are discussed., (© 2022. Scientific studies of language behavior need to grapple with a large diversity of languages in the world and, for reading, a further variability in writing systems. Yet, the ability to form meaningful theories of reading is contingent on the availability of cross-linguistic behavioral data. This paper offers new insights into aspects of reading behavior that are shared and those that vary systematically across languages through an investigation of eye-tracking data from 13 languages recorded during text reading. We begin with reporting a bibliometric analysis of eye-tracking studies showing that the current empirical base is insufficient for cross-linguistic comparisons. We respond to this empirical lacuna by presenting the Multilingual Eye-Movement Corpus (MECO), the product of an international multi-lab collaboration. We examine which behavioral indices differentiate between reading in written languages, and which measures are stable across languages. One of the findings is that readers of different languages vary considerably in their skipping rate (i.e., the likelihood of not fixating on a word even once) and that this variability is explained by cross-linguistic differences in word length distributions. In contrast, if readers do not skip a word, they tend to spend a similar average time viewing it. We outline the implications of these findings for theories of reading. The lung is a vital organ that incessantly faces external environmental challenges. Its homeostasis and unimpeded vital function are ensured by the respiratory epithelium working hand in hand with an intricate fine-tuned tissue-resident immune cell network. Lung tissue-resident immune cells span across the innate and adaptive immunity and protect from infectious agents but can also prove to be pathogenic if dysregulated. Here, we review the innate and adaptive immune cell subtypes comprising lung-resident immunity and discuss their ontogeny and role in distinct respiratory diseases. Although cannabis use is increasing in general population, their prevalence among young adults is remarkably high. In recent years, their medical use gained a renewed interest. However, it can underline the reputation of cannabis being a harmless drug. Between cannabinoids, uniquely found on the cannabis plant, Δ 9 -tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the well-studied compound. It is responsible for the psychoactive effects via central cannabinoid receptors. Nevertheless, cannabinoids interact with other chemical signalling systems such as the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. THC indirectly decreases gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) secretion by the hypothalamus. The consequences are diverse, and several key hormones are affected. THC disturbs important reproductive events like folliculogenesis, ovulation and sperm maturation and function. Although generally accepted that cannabinoid consumption impacts male and female fertility, prevailing evidence remains largely on pre-clinical studies. Target templates stored in visual memory guide visual attention toward behaviorally relevant target objects. Visual attention also is guided away from nontarget distractors by longer-term learning, a phenomenon termed "learned distractor rejection." Template guidance and learned distractor rejection can occur simultaneously to further increase search efficiency. However, the underlying processes guiding learned distractor rejection are unknown. In two visual search experiments employing eye-tracking, we tested between two plausible processes: proactive versus reactive attentional control. Participants searched through two-color, spatially unsegregated displays. Participants could guide attention by both target templates and consistent nontarget distractors. We observed fewer distractor fixations (including the first eye movement) and shorter distractor dwell times. The data supported a single mechanism of learned distractor rejection, whereby observers adopted a learned, proactive attentional control setting to avoid distraction whenever possible. Further, when distraction occurred, observers rapidly recovered. We term this proactive mechanism "learned oculomotor avoidance." Background: Solitary fibrous tumour (SFT) is a rare mesenchymal malignancy that lacks robust prognostic and predictive biomarkers. Interferon-stimulated gene 15 (ISG15) is a ubiquitin-like modifier, associated with tumour progression, and with poor survival of SFT patients, as previous published by our group. Here, we describe the role of ISG15 in the biology of this rare tumour., Methods: ISG15 expression was assessed by immunohistochemistry in tissue microarrays from SFT patients and tested for correlation with progression-free survival and overall survival (OS). The effects of ISG15 knockdown or induction were investigated for cancer stem cell (CSC) characteristics and for drug sensitivity in unique in vitro models of SFT., Results: The prognostic value of ISG15 for OS was validated at protein level in malignant SFT patients, prospectively treated with pazopanib and enrolled in GEIS-32 trial. In SFT in vitro models, ISG15 knockdown lead to a decrease in the expression of CSC-related genes, including SOX2, NANOG, ALDH1A1, ABCB1 and ABCC1. Likewise, ISG15 downregulation decreased the clonogenic/ tumoursphere-forming ability of SFT cells, while enhancing apoptotic cell death after doxorubicin, pazopanib or trabectedin treatment in 3D cell cultures. The regulation of CSC-related genes by ISG15 was confirmed after inducing its expression with interferon-β1; ISG15 induction upregulated 1.28- to 451-fold the expression of CSC-associated genes., Conclusions: ISG15 is a prognostic factor in malignant SFT, regulating the expression of CSC-related genes and CSCs maintenance. Our results suggest that ISG15 could be a novel therapeutic target in SFT, which could improve the efficacy of the currently available treatments., (© 2022. Accounting for dependent observations in cluster-randomized trials (CRTs) using nested data is necessary in order to avoid misestimated standard errors resulting in questionable inferential statistics. Cluster-robust standard errors (CRSEs) are often used to address this issue. However, CRSEs are still well-known to underestimate standard errors for group-level variables when the number of clusters is low (e.g., < 50) and with CRTs, a small number of clusters, due to logistical or financial considerations, is the norm rather than the exception. Using a simulation with various conditions, we investigate the use of a small sample correction (i.e., CR2 estimator) proposed by Bell and McCaffrey (2002) together with empirically derived degrees of freedom estimates (dof BM ). Findings indicate that even with as few as 10 clusters, the CR2 estimator used with dof BM yields generally unbiased results with acceptable type I error and coverage rates. Results show that coverage and type I error rates can be largely influenced by the choice of dof, not just the standard error adjustments. An applied example is provided together with R syntax to conduct the analysis. Increasing evidence demonstrates that observers can learn the likely location of salient singleton distractors during visual search. To date, the reduced attentional capture at high-probability distractor locations has typically been examined using so called compound search, in which by design a target is always present. Here, we explored whether statistical distractor learning can also be observed in a visual detection task, in which participants respond target present if the singleton target is present and respond target absent when the singleton target is absent. If so, this allows us to examine suppression of the location that is likely to contain a distractor both in the presence, but critically also in the absence, of a priority signal generated by the target singleton. In an online variant of the additional singleton paradigm, observers had to indicate whether a unique shape was present or absent, while ignoring a colored singleton, which appeared with a higher probability in one specific location. We show that attentional capture was reduced, but not absent, at high-probability distractor locations, irrespective of whether the display contained a target or not. By contrast, target processing at the high-probability distractor location was selectively impaired on distractor-present displays. Moreover, all suppressive effects were characterized by a gradient such that suppression scaled with the distance to the high-probability distractor location. The information on land use and land cover (LULC) plays a critical role in understanding the interactions between human activities and the natural environment. The changes in LULC have a significant impact on the ecological integrity of forests, biodiversity, and natural resources, which in turn trigger global environmental change. Forest fragmentation is an important conservation challenge that includes interdependent forest loss components and spatial shift patterns. Over the years, Northeast India has experienced major changes in LULC and forest fragmentation. There are limited information and data regarding the change in LULC patterns and causes of forest fragmentation. The present study was carried out with an attempt to analyze the change in LULC and forest fragmentation using satellite data of three different time series: 1991, 2005, and 2020 for Ukhrul district, Manipur, Northeast India. Different LULC classes were classified using the supervised method, viz., maximum likelihood algorithm in ERDAS Imagine 2014 and generated thematic maps in ArcGIS 10.4 software. Considering the classified forest class, fragmentation in the forest area was grouped into different categories of fragmentation using the Landscape Fragmentation Tool (LFT v 2.0). The distribution of the perforated category has tremendously increased in 2020 from 1991. The outcome of the present study will help to understand the inherent forest vulnerability and to adopt sustainable management strategies for forest and agriculture ecosystems in the hill landscape., (© 2021. Mixed-effects models are a powerful tool for modeling fixed and random effects simultaneously, but do not offer a feasible analytic solution for estimating the probability that a test correctly rejects the null hypothesis. Being able to estimate this probability, however, is critical for sample size planning, as power is closely linked to the reliability and replicability of empirical findings. A flexible and very intuitive alternative to analytic power solutions are simulation-based power analyses. Although various tools for conducting simulation-based power analyses for mixed-effects models are available, there is lack of guidance on how to appropriately use them. In this tutorial, we discuss how to estimate power for mixed-effects models in different use cases: first, how to use models that were fit on available (e.g. published) data to determine sample size; second, how to determine the number of stimuli required for sufficient power; and finally, how to conduct sample size planning without available data. Our examples cover both linear and generalized linear models and we provide code and resources for performing simulation-based power analyses on openly accessible data sets. The present work therefore helps researchers to navigate sound research design when using mixed-effects models, by summarizing resources, collating available knowledge, providing solutions and tools, and applying them to real-world problems in sample sizing planning when sophisticated analysis procedures like mixed-effects models are outlined as inferential procedures., (© 2021. Psychology faces a measurement crisis, and mind-wandering research is not immune. The present study explored the construct validity of probed mind-wandering reports (i.e., reports of task-unrelated thought [TUT]) with a combined experimental and individual-differences approach. We examined laboratory data from over 1000 undergraduates at two U.S. institutions, who responded to one of four different thought-probe types across two cognitive tasks. We asked a fundamental measurement question: Do different probe types yield different results, either in terms of average reports (average TUT rates, TUT-report confidence ratings), or in terms of TUT-report associations, such as TUT rate or confidence stability across tasks, or between TUT reports and other consciousness-related constructs (retrospective mind-wandering ratings, executive-control performance, and broad questionnaire trait assessments of distractibility-restlessness and positive-constructive daydreaming)? Our primary analyses compared probes that asked subjects to report on different dimensions of experience: TUT-content probes asked about what they'd been mind-wandering about, TUT-intentionality probes asked about why they were mind-wandering, and TUT-depth probes asked about the extent (on a rating scale) of their mind-wandering. Our secondary analyses compared thought-content probes that did versus didn't offer an option to report performance-evaluative thoughts. Our findings provide some "good news"-that some mind-wandering findings are robust across probing methods-and some "bad news"-that some findings are not robust across methods and that some commonly used probing methods may not tell us what we think they do. A Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, rod-shaped, non-gliding and non-motile bacterium designated as N1E253 T , was isolated from marine sediments collected from the coast of Weihai, PR China. N1E253 T was found to grow at pH 7.0-9.0 (optimum, pH 7.5), 15-37 °C (optimum, 30 °C) in the presence of 1.5-5.0% (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 3.0%). The major polar lipids of strain N1E253 T were phosphatidylethanolamine, diphosphatidylglycerol and one unidentified phospholipid. The sole respiratory quinone was MK-9. The major cellular fatty acids (> 10.0%) were iso-C 14: 0 , C 16: 0 and Summed Feature 3 (C 16:1 ω7c and/or C 16:1 ω6c). The result of the 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis confirmed the affiliation of this novel isolate to the family Verrucomicrobiaceae, with Persicirhabdus sediminis KCTC 22039  T being its closest relative with 92.1% sequence similarity. Genome sequencing revealed a genome size of 5,073,947 bp, DNA G + C content of 52.0% and two protein-coding genes related to the resistance of fluoroquinolones. Based on physiological, genomic, biochemical and chemotaxonomic characteristics, we propose that strain N1E253 T represents a novel species of a novel genus within the family Verrucomicrobiaceae, for which the name Oceaniferula marina gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. Self-efficacy is a coping resource with a positive impact on well-being, quality of life, anxiety, and depression in cancer patients, even after treatment. This study focused on the validation of the Cancer Behavior Inventory-Brief Version (CBI-B) in Portuguese patients with breast cancer. The study included 115 patients with breast cancer receiving outpatient chemotherapy in four hospitals located in Portugal. Participants (N = 115) completed the translated version of the CBI-B in Portuguese and measures of quality of life (QLQ- C30), psychological distress (HADS), and illness perceptions (IPQ-B). Confirmatory factor analysis supported the four-factor original structure of the CBI-B. The Portuguese version of the CBI-B showed good psychometric properties as shown by measures of internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha = .88), test-retest reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient = .59), convergent validity with the QLQ-C30 (r = .43, p < .001), and divergent validity with the HADS (r = -.60, p < .001) and the IPQ-B (r = -.51, p < .001). The Portuguese version of the CBI-B is a valid and reliable instrument to evaluate the self-efficacy for coping in Portuguese breast cancer patients. Picture-naming latency differs across languages in bilingual speakers. We compared the effects of key psycholinguistic variables on picture naming among two groups of Chinese bilingual speakers and Mandarin monolingual speakers. First, we asked bilingual and monolingual speakers to estimate the age of acquisition, familiarity, visual complexity, name agreement, and imageability of a set of object and action pictures in Mandarin and Cantonese. Next, we recruited 60 Cantonese-English speakers, 50 Mandarin-Cantonese bilingual speakers, and 30 monolingual speakers who named the object and action pictures in Cantonese and Mandarin, respectively. We observed variability in the effects of item-level characteristics among groups, suggesting an interaction between item-level and individual-level characteristics as predicted. This variability was higher in bilingual speakers who spoke similar languages (Mandarin-Cantonese) in comparison to those speaking more distant languages (Cantonese-English). Our results suggest that monolingual norms and bilingual norms capture the same amount of variability; however, grammatical class interactions with other variables are explained differentially by the bilingual and monolingual norms. Recent evidence suggests that the processing of observed actions may reflect an action prediction error, with more pronounced mediofrontal negative event-related potentials (ERPs) for unexpected actions. This evidence comes from an application of a false-belief task, where unexpected correct responses elicited high ERP amplitudes. An alternative interpretation is that the ERP component reflects vicarious error processing, as objectively correct responses were errors from the observed person's perspective. In this study, we aimed to disentangle the two possibilities by adding the factor task difficulty, which varied expectations without affecting the definition of (vicarious) errors, and to explore the role of empathy in action observation. We found that the relationship between empathy and event-related potentials (ERPs) mirrored the relationship between empathy and behavioral expectancy measures. Only in the easy task condition did higher empathy lead to stronger expectancy of correct responses in the true-belief and of errors in the false-belief condition. A compatible pattern was found for an early ERP component (150-200 ms) after the observed response, with a larger negativity for error than correct responses in the true-belief and the reverse pattern in the false-belief condition, but only in highly empathic participants. We conclude that empathy facilitates the formation of expectations regarding the actions of others. These expectations then modulate the processing of observed actions, as indicated by the ERPs in the present study.

The aim of this randomized controlled trial was to determine whether applying the reverse Trendelenburg position before pneumoperitoneum has a preventive effect on increased intracranial pressure using optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) measurement as a noninvasive parameter. Seventy-nine patients were allocated to two groups according to whether pneumoperitoneum was applied in the supine position (group S, n = 40) or in the reverse Trendelenburg position (group RT, n = 39). The ONSD was measured at the following time points: T0: before anesthesia; T1: after endotracheal intubation; T2: after pneumoperitoneum in group S and after positioning in group RT; T3: after positioning in group S and after pneumoperitoneum in group RT; T4: 30 min after endotracheal intubation, and T5: after desufflation. The end-tidal carbon dioxide (EtCO 2 ), regional cerebral oxygen saturation (rSO 2 ), peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO 2 ), mean arterial pressure (MAP), heart rate (HR), peak inspiratory pressure (Ppeak), and dynamic compliance (Cdyn) were recorded. Background and perioperative characteristics were similar in both groups. In group S, the ONSD was higher at T2, T3, T4, and T5 than that in group RT (p < 0.001, p = 0.002, p = 0.001, and p = 0.012, respectively). In the same group, the number of patients with an ONSD above 5.8 mm was higher at T2, T3, and T4 (p < 0.001, p = 0.042, p = 0.036, respectively). The rSO2 and SpO2 were not different between the groups. The mean arterial pressure was lower in group RT at T2, and the HR was not different between the groups (p < 0.001). In group S, Ppeak was higher and Cdyn was lower at T2 (p < 0.001). The number of patients with nausea was higher in group S (p = 0.027). The present study demonstrates that applying the reverse Trendelenburg position before pneumoperitoneum prevented an increase in the ONSD in patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy.Trial registration The trial was registered prior to patient enrollment at https://register.clinicaltrials.gov (NCT04224532, Date of the registration: January 8, 2020).

The gaze-contingent moving-window paradigm was used to assess the size and symmetry of the perceptual span in older readers. The eye movements of 49 cognitively intact older adults (60-88 years of age) were recorded as they read sentences varying in difficulty, and the availability of letter information to the right and left of fixation was manipulated. To reconcile discrepancies in previous estimates of the perceptual span in older readers, individual differences in written language proficiency were assessed with tests of vocabulary, reading comprehension, reading speed, spelling ability, and print exposure. The results revealed that higher proficiency older adults extracted information up to 15 letter spaces to the right of fixation, while lower proficiency readers showed no additional benefit beyond 9 letters to the right. However, all readers showed improvements to reading with the availability of up to 9 letters to the left-confirming previous evidence of reduced perceptual span asymmetry in older readers. The findings raise questions about whether the source of age-related changes in parafoveal processing lies in the adoption of a risky reading strategy involving an increased propensity to both guess upcoming words and make corrective regressions.

Focusing attention is a key cognitive skill, but how the gaze of others affects engaged attention remains relatively unknown. We investigated if participants' attentional bias toward a location is modulated by the number of people gazing toward or away from it. We presented participants with a nonpredictive directional cue that biased attention towards a specific location. Then, any number of four stimulus faces turned their gaze toward or away from the attended location. When all the faces looked at the attended location participants increased their commitment to it, and response time to targets at that location were speeded. When most or all of the faces looked away from the attended location, attention was withdrawn, and response times were slowed. This study reveals that the gaze of others can penetrate one's ability to focus attention, which in turn can be both beneficial and costly to one's responses to events in the environment.

Several eye-movement studies have revealed flexibility in the parafoveal processing of character-order information in Chinese reading. In particular, studies show that processing a two-character word in a sentence benefits more from parafoveal preview of a nonword created by transposing rather than replacing its two characters. One issue that has not been investigated is whether the contextual predictability of the target word influences this processing of character order information. However, such a finding would provide novel evidence for an early influence of context on lexical processing in Chinese reading. Accordingly, we investigated this issue in an eye-movement experiment using the boundary paradigm and sentences containing two-character target words with high or low contextual predictability. Prior to the reader's gaze crossing an invisible boundary, each target word was shown normally (i.e. a valid preview) or with its two characters either transposed or replaced by unrelated characters to create invalid nonword previews. These invalid previews reverted to the target word once the reader's gaze crossed the invisible boundary. The results showed larger preview benefits (i.e. a decrease in fixation times) for target words following transposed-character than substituted-character previews, revealing a transposed-character effect similar to that in previous research. In addition, a word predictability effect (shorter fixation times for words with high than low predictability) was observed following both valid and transposed-character previews, but not substituted-character previews. The findings therefore reveal that context can influence an early stage of lexical processing in Chinese reading during which character order is processed flexibly.

The MultiSCED web application has been developed to assist applied researchers in behavioral sciences to apply multilevel modeling to quantitatively summarize single-case experimental design (SCED) studies through a user-friendly point-and-click interface embedded within R. In this paper, we offer a brief introduction to the application, explaining how to define and estimate the relevant multilevel models and how to interpret the results numerically and graphically. The use of the application is illustrated through a re-analysis of an existing meta-analytic dataset. By guiding applied researchers through MultiSCED, we aim to make use of the multilevel modeling technique for combining SCED data across cases and across studies more comprehensible and accessible.

Photoacoustic technology in combination with molecular imaging is a highly effective method for accurately diagnosing brain glioma. For glioma detection at a deeper site, contrast agents with higher photoacoustic imaging sensitivity are needed. Herein, we report a MoS 2 -ICG hybrid with indocyanine green (ICG) conjugated to the surface of MoS 2 nanosheets. The hybrid significantly enhanced photoacoustic imaging sensitivity compared to MoS 2 nanosheets. This conjugation results in remarkably high optical absorbance across a broad near-infrared spectrum, redshifting of the ICG absorption peak and photothermal/photoacoustic conversion efficiency enhancement of ICG. A tumor mass of 3.5 mm beneath the mouse scalp was clearly visualized by using MoS 2 -ICG as a contrast agent for the in vivo photoacoustic imaging of orthotopic glioma, which is nearly twofold deeper than the tumors imaged in our previous report using MoS 2 nanosheet. Thus, combined with its good stability and high biocompatibility, the MoS 2 -ICG hybrid developed in this study has a great potential for high-efficiency tumor molecular imaging in translational medicine.

Objective To use scoping review methods to construct a conceptual framework based on current evidence of group well-child care to guide future practice and research. Methods We conducted a scoping review using Arksey and O'Malley's (2005) six stages. We used constructs from the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research and the quadruple aim of health care improvement to guide the construction of the conceptual framework. Results The resulting conceptual framework is a synthesis of the key concepts of group well-child care, beginning with a call for a system redesign of well-child care to improve outcomes while acknowledging the theoretical antecedents structuring the rationale that supports the model. Inputs of group well-child care include health systems contexts; administration/logistics; clinical setting; group care clinic team; community/patient population; and curriculum development and training. The core components of group well-child care included structure (e.g., group size, facilitators), content (e.g., health assessments, service linkages). and process (e.g., interactive learning and community building). We found clinical outcomes in all four dimensions of the quadruple aim of healthcare. Conclusion Our conceptual framework can guide model implementation and identifies several outcomes that can be used to harmonize model evaluation and research. Preeclampsia is a protean syndrome causing a kidney disease characterised by hypertension and proteinuria, usually considered transitory and reversible after delivery. Its prevalence ranges from 3-5 to 10% if all the related disorders are considered. This narrative review, on behalf of the Kidney and Pregnancy Study Group of the Italian Society of Nephrology, focuses on three reasons why preeclampsia should concern paediatric nephrologists and how they can play an important role in its prevention, as well as in the prevention of future kidney and cardiovascular diseases. Firstly, all diseases of the kidney and urinary tract diagnosed in paediatric age are associated with a higher risk of adverse pregnancy-related outcomes, including preeclampsia. Secondly, babies with low birth weights (small for gestational age, born preterm, or both) have an increased risk of developing the full panoply of metabolic diseases (obesity, hypertension, early-onset cardiopathy and chronic kidney disease) and girls are at higher risk of developing preeclampsia when pregnant. The risk may be particularly high in cases of maternal preeclampsia, highlighting a familial aggregation of this condition. Thirdly, pregnant teenagers have a higher risk of developing preeclampsia and the hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, and should be followed up as high risk pregnancies. In summary, preeclampsia has come to be seen as a window on the future health of both mother and baby.
