Establishing scientifically the macro-location of a micropollutants monitoring network in tropical Andean rivers is a complex process, because information gathering is restricted by high-cost of analysis and limited availability of analytical techniques, which lead to inadequate sampling strategies that hinder the representativeness of samples. Thus, this work proposes a methodology for determining the number of representative sampling sections in a micropollutant monitoring network to characterise the ecological risk in tropical Andean torrential rivers. The proposed methodology consists of four stages: identification of the potential sampling units by Spline interpolation; calculation of the number of representative sections for a stratified sampling with an acceptable level of confidence and error; spatial allocation of the potential sampling units into sections by hierarchical cluster analysis; and representation of the spatial distribution of the sampling sections through a geographic information system (GIS). The proposed methodology is dynamic, and therefore, it can be revisited as more data are obtained in the subsequent years; it has the possibility of being applied to other inter-Andean valley rivers that interact with the tropical Andean sloppy mountains and serves as a tool for decision making by environmental authorities regarding the optimisation of the existing monitoring networks in terms of micropollutants to promote sustainable management of water resources. The proposed methodology is applied in the Upper Cauca River Basin (UCRB), which is located in southwest Colombia, South America.

The clear seasonality of varicella infections in temperate regions suggests the influence of meteorologic conditions. However, there are very few data on this association. The aim of this study was to determine the seasonal pattern of varicella infections on the Mediterranean island of Mallorca (Spain), and its association with meteorologic conditions and schooling. Data on the number of cases of varicella were obtained from the Network of Epidemiologic Surveillance, which is composed of primary care physicians who notify varicella cases on a compulsory basis. From 1995 to 2012, varicella cases were correlated to temperature, humidity, rainfall, water vapor pressure, atmospheric pressure, wind speed, and solar radiation using regression and time-series models. The influence of schooling was also analyzed. A total of 68,379 cases of varicella were notified during the study period. Cases occurred all year round, with a peak incidence in June. Varicella cases increased with the decrease in water vapor pressure and/or the increase of solar radiation, 3 and 4 weeks prior to reporting, respectively. An inverse association was also observed between varicella cases and school holidays. Using these variables, the best fitting autoregressive moving average with exogenous variables (ARMAX) model could predict 95 % of varicella cases. In conclusion, varicella in our region had a clear seasonality, which was mainly determined by solar radiation and water vapor pressure.

In this paper, high-capacity energy storage devices based on macroporous silicon are demonstrated. Small footprint devices with large specific capacitances up to 100 nF/mm(2), and an absolute capacitance above 15 μF, have been successfully fabricated using standard microelectronics and MEMS techniques. The fabricated devices are suitable for high-density system integration. The use of 3-D silicon structures allows achieving a large surface to volume ratio. The macroporous silicon structures are fabricated by electrochemical etching of silicon. This technique allows creating large structures of tubes with either straight or modulated radial profiles in depth. Furthermore, a very large aspect ratio is possible with this fabrication method. Macroporous silicon grown this way permits well-controlled structure definition with excellent repeatability and surface quality. Additionally, structure geometry can be accurately controlled to meet designer specifications. Macroporous silicon is used as one of the electrodes over which a silicon dioxide insulating layer is grown. Several insulator thicknesses have been tested. The second capacitor electrode is a solid nickel filling of the pores prepared by electroplating in a low-temperature industry standard process. The use of high-conductivity materials allows reaching small equivalent series resistance near 1 Ω. Thanks to these improvements, the presented devices are capable of operating up to 10 kHz., Pacs: 84.32.Tt; 81.15.Pq; 81.05.Rm.

We study the clinical, management and outcome differences between respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) positive and negative bronchiolitis. A retrospective review of the medical records of children ≤ 2 years of age with acute bronchiolitis between January 1995 and December 2006 was done. There were 2,384 patients hospitalized for acute bronchiolitis, and 1,495 (62.7%) were RSV infections. Overall, hospitalization rate was 55/1,000 admissions. Mortality occurred in 0.08% of cases. Bronchiolitis due to RSV was more frequent from November to March (97%). RSV bronchiolitis had longer hospital stays (6 vs. 5 days, P<0.0001), higher risk of intensive care unit (ICU) admission (OR 2.7; 95%CI 1.87-3.9) and more oxygen use (OR 2.2; 95%CI 1.8-2.6). Infants < 2 months had longer median hospital stay (6 vs. 5 days, P <0.0001) and higher risk of ICU admission (OR 3.4; 95%CI 2.5-4.6). Prematures of < 32 gestational weeks, congenital heart disease, and atelectasis/condensation were the main risk factors for ICU admission in both RSV and non-RSV bronchiolitis. The introduction of palivizumab in prematures diminished hospitalization for RSV bronchiolitis, oxygen need, length of hospital stay and mechanical ventilation. In conclusion, this study supports that RSV bronchiolitis seems to be a more severe disease than that caused by other viruses.

Aneurysmal bone cyst is a benign but locally destructive lesion of bone. We present two cases of ABC in uncommon locations in two children. The first case concerns a 14 year old boy who had a mass located in the internal side of the talus. An ABC type V of Campanacci's classification is diagnosed. Complete curettage was carried out with a high-speed burr. We implanted an Orthofix external fixation with a mobil bottom bolster and distal pins located in the calcaneum. Case 2 concerns an ABC in the clavicle of a 9 years old boy. A selective arterial embolization (SAE) with polyvinyl alcohol was carried out. Curettage of the lesion and filling with a cortico-spongy graft were implemented. Two years later, both of the patients are asymptomatic. We believe that external fixation with a bolster is an efficient and valid alternative to traditional immobilization with a cast. The use of SAE also prevented profuse bleeding of the lesion during surgical procedure.

A comparison between a direct immunofluorescence assay (DFA) and the shell-vial culture (SVC) was conducted to evaluate their efficacies according to the quality and origin of the sample and the type of herpes simplex (HSV) responsible for the infection. The SVC detected all 58 HSV-infected samples, while the DFA detected only 49 (84.5%) positive samples. The DFA detected HSV type 1 in 22 of 89 samples (24.7%) and HSV type 2 in 27 of 96 samples (28.1%). Compared with the SVC, the DFA had a sensitivity of 75.8% for HSV type 1 and 93.1% for HSV type 2. The sensitivity of the DFA depends on the quality of the sample. Thus, while DFA is recommendable as a screening method, the SVC remains the method of choice for obtaining the maximum diagnostic yield from the sample.

To establish the number of blood samples necessary for the diagnosis of viremic episodes caused by cytomegalovirus (CMV), a prospective analysis was conducted of 238 patients (38 renal transplant recipients and 200 HIV-infected patients) who developed CMV viremia. The usefulness of samples and the volume of blood required to demonstrate the presence of viremia by CMV was also studied. The first blood sample was diagnostic for CMV viremia in 53.3% of the viremic patients; the second sample documented an additional 22.2% of cases of viremia (75.5% of infected patients); and the third sample demonstrated viremia in the remaining 24.5%. Thus, a diagnosis of CMV viremia was established in every patient (100% of episodes of viremia). In this study, the use of three 3 ml blood samples collected at 24 h intervals was sufficient to detect all episodes of CMV viremia in patients clinically suspected to have disseminated disease.

During the period 1987 to 1991 a retrospective study was performed to determine the resistance of thermotolerant Campylobacter species isolated from feces to erythromycin and fluoroquinolones. Of the 672 strains studied, 614 (91.3%) were identified as Campylobacter jejuni and 58 (8.7%) as Campylobacter coli. During the study period the rate of resistance of Campylobacter jejuni to erythromycin remained relatively stable (0.9-3.5%), while resistance of Campylobacter coli to erythromycin emerged later (1989) with much higher rates (14.8-33%). Overall, 11.8% and 10.7% of Campylobacter jejuni strains isolated after 1987 were resistant to nalidixic acid and ciprofloxacin respectively, resistance increasing from 2.3% in 1988 to 32% in 1991. In 1991 the first strains of Campylobacter coli with resistance to these fluoroquinolones were detected (rates 29% and 26% respectively). Of the strains resistant to nalidixic acid, only 10.9% were susceptible to ciprofloxacin.

The autoagglutination phenomenon (AA) was studied in 71 strains of mesophilic aeromonads isolated from stool cultures of patients with acute diarrhea (28 Aeromonas hydrophila, 20 Aeromonas sobria, and 23 Aeromonas caviae). Two phenotypes were considered in the AA+ strains: SP+ (self-pelleting) and PAB+ (precipitation after boiling). Serogrouping of the strains was performed only with the 0:11 serum. Other properties studied were agglutination with acriflavine (Acr) and crystal violet uptake (CVB). Phenotype AA+ was found in 29.5% of the strains; 7% of these AA+ strains exhibited the SP+ PAB+ pattern and 22.5% the SP- PAB+ pattern. The species Aeromonas hydrophila comprised the highest proportion (28.5%), and Aeromonas caviae the lowest (13%). Fifty percent of the PAB+ strains of Aeromonas hydrophila and Aeromonas sobria belonged to serotype 0:11. None of the PAB+ strains of Aeromonas caviae belonged to this serotype. 8.4% of the strains were Acr+ and 23.9% CVB+.

The efficacy of the Enteric Pathogen Screen (EPS) card as a rapid method for identification of Salmonella spp. isolated in stool cultures was studied. Of the 120 lactose-negative, sucrose-negative, H2S-producing colonies tested, 74 were identified as Salmonella enteritidis by conventional methods. The reading of the EPS card after 2 h of incubation yielded a sensitivity of 47.2% and a specificity and positive predictive value of 100%, with a negative predictive value of 54.1%. In the final reading of 4 h, a sensitivity of 97.2% and a specificity of 86.9% were obtained, with a positive predictive value of 92.3% and a negative predictive value of 95.2%.
