Objective: To develop a multidimensional method that allows to identify different treatment concepts, techniques, protagonists, and their connections in surgical pathology of the abdominal wall throughout its historical development, serving as a basis or guide for the future., Method: First, an extensive and rigorous review of the literature was conducted to search for and group the different treatments described in the most common abdominal wall pathologies, including both groin and ventral hernias. Then, all treatment approaches were chronologically ordered and grouped according to their author, surgical approach, and method of approach. With all the information gathered, a table was created following a rational and multidimensional criterion that allows for the encoding of the set., Results: 21 treatment modalities were identified and distributed into 8 groups. Additionally, 3 types of authors were detected: the creator, the innovator, and the popularizer. The assignment of values to different dimensions allowed us to obtain an alphanumeric code representative of the set., Conclusion: Multidimensional historical analysis allows analytical objectivity and set encoding. Over the past two decades, there has been a noteworthy surge in the attention and interest surrounding camel rearing and camel milk production in Saudi Arabia. This focus has emanated from diverse stakeholders including the general public, camel breeders, and researchers. While limited quantities of camel pasteurized milk currently available in selected showrooms, the sale of raw milk near camel enclosures remains prevalent. Recent developments include the inauguration of a modernized, opulent showroom in Riyadh exclusively dedicated to showcasing camel milk and its derivatives. The commencement of machine camel milking trials in Saudi Arabia traces back to 2003 when a portable single-bucket cow milking machine was initially tested at the Al-Jouf Range and Camel Research Center in Sakaka city. Subsequently, a company in the northern region of Saudi Arabia emerged the nation's first semi-automatic camel milking line in 2008, which continues to operate to this day. However, these endeavors, while pioneering, lag behind contemporary milking technologies prevalent in dairy farms focused on cows. Despite these strides, there exists a notable dearth of comprehensive data encompassing critical aspects of dairy camel farming. Absence of information on dairy camel and total seasonal milk yields, scientific data on machine milkability, and established production standards and characteristics for female camel milk hinders the sector's progress. This review endeavors to elucidate the obstacles and challenges hindering the widespread adoption of camel machine milking and the implementation of good camel management practices. It also outlines prospective measures aimed at overcoming these challenges for a more robust future for camel as a productive livestock in Saudi Arabia. Cervical cancer has been and still is a major global health problem and a major treatment challenge for which surgical interventions have played a key role throughout the past century. In early stages (I/A2-II/B), where high-risk factors are not present, the efficacy of surgical and radiotherapy treatment has been considered equivalent with different (treatment modality specific) complications and quality of life consequences. Negative prognostic factors in early stages of the disease (pelvic lymph-node positivity) and in more advanced stages (parametrial and/or surgical margins' tumor involvement) forecast the deterioration of outlooks for good life expectancy. In these high-risk cases, when radio- or chemoradiotherapy is contraindicated, we investigated the potential role of a more radical surgical approach than the traditional radical hysterectomy. Twenty-five years ago, a hyperradical surgical procedure for the treatment of high-risk cervical cancer patients was introduced in Budapest. The procedure was named as laterally extended parametrectomy (LEP) in Budapest Hungary. The surgical intention was the complete removal of the fibro-fatty tissue content of the pelvis, which contains the lymphatic vessels, lymph nodes, and tumor-affected pelvic side wall structures. We initiated observational studies on the primary treatment in parametrium and/or lymph-node tumor-positive early-stage cases and on second-line surgical therapy of pelvic side wall recurrent tumors following radiotherapy. Purpose of Review: Family history of premature cardiovascular disease is a strong predictor of individual cardiovascular risk. However, family history is not always available and not always reliable. Roughly 80% of health outcomes are influenced not by genetic risk but by societal factors, including adverse health behaviors and environment. Furthermore, in the present age of genetic testing, laboratory evaluations, and imaging, a key question remains: What is the contemporary relevance of family history screening in the management of cardiovascular disease in youth?, Recent Findings: Knowledge of an individual's family history can help clinicians identify not only inherited risk but also familial clustering of unhealthy behaviors and environmental adversity contributing to enhanced cardiovascular disease risk in youth. For those at greatest risk, prevention strategies can be applied sooner and more conservatively. Family health history (FHH) is an evidence-based genomics tool used in cancer prevention and education. Chinese Americans, the largest Asian American group, face unique barriers in FHH collection and communication. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of culturally and linguistically appropriate community health worker (CHW)-delivered FHH-based breast cancer (BC) education and services to Chinese Americans. A total of 1129 Chinese Americans received FHH-based BC education and service delivered by our trained Chinese American CHWs. Participants responded to evaluation surveys before, immediately after, and 3 months after the education and service. Participating Chinese Americans showed significant increases in rates of collecting FHH of BC, discussing FHH of BC with family members, informing their primary care physicians of their FHH of BC, and discussing their FHH of BC with their primary care physicians at 3 months post-education and service compared to the baseline data (all Ps < 0.01). Attitudes, intention, and self-efficacy related to FHH of BC communication and collection and FHH of BC knowledge were improved both immediately after and 3 months after the delivery of the education and services (all Ps < 0.01). Within 3 months, ~ 14.3% of participants who had a high risk of BC based on FHH reported visiting geneticists for genetic evaluation. Our Chinese American CHW-delivered FHH-based BC education and services showed initial success in increasing knowledge, collection and communication of BC-related FHH, and genetic service utilization among Chinese American participants. The ability of an organism to respond to nutritional stress can be a plastic character under the action of natural selection, affecting several characteristics, including life history and energy storage. The genus Drosophila (Diptera; Drosophilidae) presents high variability regarding natural resource exploration. However, most works on this theme have studied the model species D. melanogaster Meigen, 1830 and little is known about Neotropical drosophilids. Here we evaluate the effects of three diets, with different carbohydrate-to-protein ratios, on life history (viability and development time) and metabolic pools (triglycerides, glycogen, and total soluble protein contents) of three Neotropical species of Drosophila: D. maculifrons Duda, 1927; D. ornatifrons Duda, 1927, both of the subgenus Drosophila Sturtevant, 1939, and D. willistoni Sturtevant, 1916 of the subgenus Sophophora Sturtevant, 1939. Our results showed that only D. willistoni was viable on all diets, D. maculifrons was not viable on the sugary diet, while D. ornatifrons was barely viable on this diet. The sugary diet increased the development time of D. willistoni and D. ornatifrons, and D. willistoni glycogen content. Thus, the viability of D. maculifrons and D. ornatifrons seems to depend on a certain amount of protein and/or a low concentration of carbohydrate in the diet. A more evident effect of the diets on triglyceride and protein pools was detected in D. ornatifrons, which could be related to the adult attraction to dung and carrion baited pitfall as food resource tested in nature. Physicians have traditionally asked about substance use within the Social History section of the consultation note. Drawing on social science theory and using the authors' own experiences as generalists and addiction scholars, we consider the possible unintended harms associated with this approach. The inclusion of the substance use history within the Social History reproduces the discourse of substance use disorders as "life-style choices" rather than medical conditions, and reinforces stigma among healthcare workers through the attribution of personal responsibility for complications associated with problematic substance use. The ongoing placement of the substance use history within the Social History may lead to a failure to diagnose and make appropriate management plans for clients with substance use disorders. These missed opportunities may include inadequate withdrawal management leading to discharge before medically advised, insufficient use of evidence-based pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy, polypharmacy, medical complications, and repeated admissions to hospital. We argue instead that the Substance Use History should be a stand-alone section within the consultation note. This new section would reduce the invisibility of substance use disorders within our medical systems and model that these chronic medical conditions are amenable to prevention, treatment and harm reduction through the application of evidence-based practices., (© 2024. Objective: Which theoretical and practical competences do the surgical case histories of the Hippocratic Corpus convey?, Method: The 431 Hippocratic case histories have been studied for reports and communication on diagnosis, therapy and prognosis of single persons and groups of patients suffering from surgical diseases., Results: Within the 7 books of the Hippocratic "Epidemics", a total of 18 patients with general and visceral surgical diseases are described. The main signs of the disorders were fever, pain, looseness, constipation, colic, swelling and bleeding, the most common affections abscesses, ruptures, ulcers and necroses. In addition, breast cancer can be reliably identified. Seven men are facing six women. Moreover, four children and one group are described. The patients' information about the course of their disease is sparse. Diagnostics were limited to inspection and palpation. In many cases, the treating physician confined to conservative measures. Among the surgical interventions incision, cauterization and bloodletting dominated. 11 of 18 patients succumbed to their diseases., Conclusions: The Hippocratic doctor diagnosed and treated a limited number of general and visceral surgical diseases. The symptoms of inflammation and traumatic lesions are narrated in detail. The observer describes the bloody secretion in two women with breast cancer as briefly as impressively. In two thirds of the cases, neither conservative measures alone nor in combination with invasive treatment led to enduring success. Complete recovery is reported of only three persons. Herbivorous insects depend on the host plant to optimize their overall reproductive success, and balanced fertilization may alter the plant's quality against herbivory. Life history traits of the Liriomyza trifolii (Burgess) were determined under laboratory conditions using either unfertilized and fertilized plants of bean [Phaseolus vulgaris L. (Fabaceae)], chrysanthemum [Chrysanthemum × morifolium (Asteraceae)], potato [Solanum tuberosum (Solanaceae)], bell pepper [Capsicum annuum (Solanaceae)], and tomato [Solanum lycopersicum (Solanaceae)]. Results indicated that L. trifolii completed development on all studied unfertilized and fertilized plants. Nevertheless, a higher performance of the leaf miner was observed on bean and bell pepper plants compared to the other plants. Furthermore, there was an interaction of the host plant and fertilization with Calcium Aria or Sitam negatively affecting the fitness-related traits of the leaf miner. Application of these fertilizers resulted in delayed immature development of L. trifolii, decreased survival rate, and reduced adult longevity and fecundity. The activity of cinnamyl alcohol dehydrogenase (CAD), peroxidase (POD), polyphenol oxidase (PPO), and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) enzymes, as well as phenolic, flavonoid, and lignin content were higher in Calcium Aria + Sitam fertilized plants, intermediate in Calcium Aria and Sitam treated plants, and the lower in unfertilized plants. Božidar Špišić was a pioneer of Croatian orthopedics. In 1908 he founded the first private orthopedic clinic in the entire South Slav region. During the First World War he organized and headed the first orthopedic hospital for the rehabilitation and resocialization of wounded soldiers. In the interwar period, Špišić was tasked with establishing the orthopedic clinic within the auspices of the School of Medicine, University of Zagreb. This effort in shaping and developing orthopedics in Croatia would not have been possible without his participation in a wide network of internationally renowned orthopedists. After graduating from the University of Graz in 1904, Špišić spent the next 4 years specializing in orthopedics with Hans Spitzy, Arnold Wittek, Fritz Lange and, most importantly, Adolf Lorenz. In this paper, we have reconstructed the transfer of knowledge and experiences between these prominent Austrian and German orthopedists and Božidar Špišić. We have paid special attention to the identification of those elements in Špišić's work that can be traced back to his mentor, teacher and lifelong colleague Adolf Lorenz, such as his treatment for congenital hip dislocation. We believe that the analysis of professional networks can shed additional light on the historiography of orthopedics, given that these influences did not manifest solely through the acquisition of specialized clinical knowledge but also through a profound influence on the core tenets of orthopedics as a discipline-its institutional organization and overall conservative approach., (© 2024. Many aspects of IgG4-related diseases were initially described during the late 19th and early 20th century. A variety of clinical presentations caused by this common pathology have been named after the researchers who first described the disorders, such as Mikulicz, Küttner, Riedel or Ormond. However, the initial description of retroperitoneal fibrosis dates back to even 50 years earlier, when in 1846, the Prussian private practitioner Raphael Jakob Kosch described a hitherto unknown constellation of symptoms and pathological findings in a famous patient. In modern cardiovascular research, isolated perfused hearts have become cost-effective and highly reproducible tools to investigate the mechanisms of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Since they were first introduced in the nineteenth century, isolated perfused hearts have been extensively used for testing novel therapies, elucidating cardiac metabolic and electrophysiological activities, and modeling CVDs, including ischemic heart disease, arrhythmias, and hyperacute rejection. In recent years, ex vivo heart perfusion (EVHP) has shown potential in cardiac transplantation by allowing prolonged preservation and reconditioning of donor hearts. In this review, we summarize the evolution of the isolated perfused heart technique and its applications in cardiovascular research to help researchers comprehensively understand the capabilities of isolated heart models and provide guidance to use them to investigate various CVDs., (© 2024. Physiology is a scientific discipline of how people's and animals' bodies function that requires traditionally suitable experimental models that often rely on animals. However, at the end of the 50th of the last century, researchers themselves addressed concerns about the use of animals for biomedical science and physiology in particular. At that time, the so-called 3R strategy was implicated where the three "R" stand for replacement, reduction, and refinement. When addressing these concerns, researchers nevertheless realized that a critical dispute about experimental models in the light of the 3R initiative may require further attention to other points such as robustness, registration, reporting, reproducibility, and rigor of the work. The question that has to be addressed now is first whether the use of animals in physiology changed in the post-3R period, whether it led to a replacement, reduction, or refinement of animal handling, and most importantly, how this affected the scientific progress in (patho)physiology. In order to address open questions concerning the relationship between the use of animals and physiological research, complete volumes of the Pflügers Archiv - European Journal of Physiology were analyzed every 10 years starting in 1950 and ending in 2020 and compared to volumes of the Journal of Physiology. It analyzed how scientists organize their projects published in the journal and what kind of models they used. The results show that physiological science has dramatically changed in the last 70 years. Replacement, reduction, and refinement were achieved to a certain level. However, during the last years, no further achievement could be seen. It seems that a certain level of animal testing is required for biomedical science and physiology in particular. Physiological studies in the present time are dominated by investigation of the physiological function of small rodents mainly mice and rats with only a few exceptions. The analysis also shows that in the future, researchers must have a critical look at further requirements of their research such as data robustness, improvement of reproducibility of data, and generation of rigor data as a prerequisite to improve our physiological view on life., (© 2024. For almost five decades, the development and implementation of integrated care-the simultaneous combination of primary care with mental health and substance use care-has been a major challenge for the behavioral health care field. Integrated care is exceptionally important because many people with behavioral health conditions also have chronic physical health conditions. Early research findings in the mid-1980s showed that persons with mental illness are likely to develop chronic physical conditions earlier and more severely than other people. These findings precipitated efforts to understand this problem and to develop further appropriate integrated care solutions. Subsequently, the US Surgeon General made care integration a major focus of his landmark 1999 Report on Mental Health, as did the 2008 Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act and the 2010 Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. However, it was not until 2014, and later, that integrated care actually began to be implemented more broadly. This article reviews these major developmental milestones, examines current activities, and explores likely developments over the next several years. Major current issues include the response to the COVID-19 pandemic, adjusting to its effects on the behavioral health care workforce, and the growing realization that behavioral health care must address the social determinants of life. Likely developments over the next several years will include devising ways to address our workforce crisis, developing effective community interventions, and implementing population health management strategies; implementing the CMS Innovation in Behavioral Health Model; improving reimbursement practices; and exploring the potential of AI for integrated care. Implications for future service organization and training of behavioral health care providers also are discussed. Horticulture poses a significant ecological risk, as agrochemicals are applied more frequently and in larger quantities per unit of production compared to extensive crop fields. The native amphibian Rhinella arenarum serves as a reliable bioindicator of environmental health. This study aimed to assess genocytotoxic damage and demographic life history traits of R. arenarum inhabiting horticultural environments. Sampling was conducted in suburban sites in central Argentina: H1 and H2 (sites associated with horticultural activity) and a reference site, RS. Environmental parameters were recorded, and the frequency of micronuclei (Mn), nuclear abnormalities (ENA), and indicators of cytotoxic damage were determined in tadpoles and adults. Demographic variables (age at maturity, longevity, potential reproductive lifespan, size at maturity, modal lifespan) were calculated. The highest nitrate and phosphate values, along with low dissolved oxygen values, were recorded at sites H1 and H2. Organisms inhabiting horticultural environments exhibited higher frequencies of Mn and ENA, surpassing those recorded in previous studies on tadpoles from sites with extensive crop production. Size at maturity and age at maturity of females, as well as size at maturity, longevity, mean age, and mean adult SVL of males, were lower in horticultural sites. The results support the hypothesis that anuran populations inhabiting horticultural environments demonstrate a diminished health status attributed to subpar environmental quality. This study investigates nineteenth century natural history practices through the lens of the Actor-Network Theory, which posits that scientific practice is shaped by an intricate network of interactions between human and non-human actors. At the core of this research is the analysis of correspondence between Charles Darwin and his collaborators during the Cirripedia Project, which unveils a complex landscape of negotiations with illustrators, funders, specimen owners, and translators, among other stakeholders and interested parties. The study goes beyond the final outcomes of scientific research, delving into behind-the-scenes interactions, and hidden constructions, shedding light on the complex dynamics and actors that conventional scientific narratives often overlook. In general, this approach provides a detailed and insightful view of the underlying processes of nineteenth-century scientific practice, underscoring the importance of epistolary correspondence as a central element in producing scientific knowledge at the time, and in particular it reveals to us how much Darwin was himself involved in the production of his famous work on barnacles. Insecticides are widely used to control pests and improve agricultural yield. The use of indiscriminate amounts and persistent pesticides has not only resulted in insect pest resistance challenges but has also harmed non-target organisms and contaminated the environment. We assessed the cost-effectiveness of Spodoptera litura (Fabricius) resistance to chlorantraniliprole (CTPR) as part of insect resistance control programs. S. litura larvae were collected from the fields and treated with chlorantraniliprole for 15 generations. Compared to the unselected population (Unsel-Lab), the chlorantraniliprole-selected population (CTPR-Sel) of S. litura exhibited a resistance level of 98.23 times. The findings demonstrated that the chlorantraniliprole-resistant genotype had lower egg-to-adult survivability, longer egg-to-adult developing times, and lower fecundity than the chlorantraniliprole-susceptible genotype. Compared to the Unsel-Lab population, the CTPR-Sel population of S. litura had a poorer relative fitness (0.44) at LC 30 and shorter male/female longevity. Demographic parameters, including net reproductive rate (R 0 ) and intrinsic (r m ) and finite rate of increase (λ), were lower in the CTPR-Sel strain than in Unsel-Lab S. litura. These findings demonstrate that chlorantraniliprole resistance in S. litura has fitness costs at the individual and population levels, implying that removing the selecting agent from the environment might result in less resistance and opportunities for susceptibility restoration. Purpose: The diagnostic performance of large language artificial intelligence (AI) models when utilizing radiological images has yet to be investigated. We employed Claude 3 Opus (released on March 4, 2024) and Claude 3.5 Sonnet (released on June 21, 2024) to investigate their diagnostic performances in response to the Radiology's Diagnosis Please quiz questions., Materials and Methods: In this study, the AI models were tasked with listing the primary diagnosis and two differential diagnoses for 322 quiz questions from Radiology's "Diagnosis Please" cases, which included cases 1 to 322, published from 1998 to 2023. The analyses were performed under the following conditions: (1) Condition 1: submitter-provided clinical history (text) alone. (2) Condition 2: submitter-provided clinical history and imaging findings (text). (3) Condition 3: clinical history (text) and key images (PNG file). We applied McNemar's test to evaluate differences in the correct response rates for the overall accuracy under Conditions 1, 2, and 3 for each model and between the models., Results: The correct diagnosis rates were 58/322 (18.0%) and 69/322 (21.4%), 201/322 (62.4%) and 209/322 (64.9%), and 80/322 (24.8%) and 97/322 (30.1%) for Conditions 1, 2, and 3 for Claude 3 Opus and Claude 3.5 Sonnet, respectively. The models provided the correct answer as a differential diagnosis in up to 26/322 (8.1%) for Opus and 23/322 (7.1%) for Sonnet. Statistically significant differences were observed in the correct response rates among all combinations of Conditions 1, 2, and 3 for each model (p < 0.01). Claude 3.5 Sonnet outperformed in all conditions, but a statistically significant difference was observed only in the comparison for Condition 3 (30.1% vs. 24.8%, p = 0.028)., Conclusion: Two AI models demonstrated a significantly improved diagnostic performance when inputting both key images and clinical history. A conflict of interest occurs when parasites manipulate the behavior of their host in contradictory ways to achieve different goals. In grass shrimp (Palaemonetes pugio), trematode parasites that use shrimp as an intermediate host cause the shrimp to be more active than usual around predators, whereas bopyrid isopod parasites that use shrimp as a final host elicit the opposite response. Since these parasites are altering the host's behavior in opposing directions, a conflict of interest would occur in co-infected shrimp. Natural selection should favor attempts to resolve this conflict through avoidance, killing, or sabotage. In a field survey of shrimp populations in four tidal creeks in the Cape Fear River, we found a significant negative association between the two parasites. Parasite abundance was negatively correlated in differently sized hosts, suggesting avoidance as a mechanism. Subsequent mortality experiments showed no evidence of early death of co-infected hosts. In behavior trials, co-infected shrimp did not show significantly different behavior from singly infected or uninfected shrimp, suggesting that neither parasite sabotages the manipulation of the other. Taken together, our results suggest that rather than sabotaging or killing one another, bopyrid and trematode parasites tend to infect differently sized hosts, thus avoiding a conflict and confirming the importance of testing assumptions in natural contexts., (© 2024. There's something strange about Freud's Civilization and its Discontents (1930). Biologically, Freud was a Neo-Lamarckian, who believed in both the modification of organisms through need and the inheritance of acquired characteristics. However, in Civilization, Freud argued that because human nature is immutable, society has dim odds of improving substantially. Lamarckians, of course, rejected that any species-nature is immutable, as species can always be transformed via the inheritance of acquired characteristics. In fact, many of Freud's Viennese contemporaries-such as Wilhelm Reich, Julius Tandler, and Paul Kammerer-took their Lamarckism to license precisely the sorts of radical social projects Freud deemed impossible. Thus the Freud of Civilization helped himself to a rigid view of human nature which, given his associated biological views, he seemingly ought to have rejected. In this paper, I explain this apparent inconsistency, and suggest Freud resolved it in the following way: Freud was not merely a Lamarckian, but also a strong and peculiar kind of recapitulationist, who believed stages of psychological development both recapitulate phylogeny, and "remain with us" throughout both individual lives and future species-history. I suggest Freud's recapitulationism supposed a certain inertia: what occurred in phylogenetic history cannot un-occur, and therefore there are aspects of our nature which we cannot un-acquire. This paper offers an historical introduction to Pere Alberch's evolutionary thought and his contributions to Evo-Devo, based on his unique approach to experimental teratology. We will take as our point of reference the teratogenic experiments developed by Alberch and Emily A. Gale during the 1980s, aimed at producing monstrous variants of frogs and salamanders. We will analyze his interpretation of the results of these experiments within the framework of the emergence of evolutionary developmental biology (or "Evo-Devo"). The aim is understand how Alberch interpreted teratological anomalies as highly revealing objects of study for understanding the development of organic form, not only in an ontogenetic sense-throughout embryonic development-but also phylogenetically-throughout the evolution of species. Alberch's interpretation of monsters reflects the influence of a long tradition of non-Darwinian evolutionary thought, which began in the nineteenth century and was continued in the twentieth century by people such as Richard Goldschmidt, Conrad H. Waddington, and Stephen Jay Gould. They all proposed various non-gradualist models of evolution, in which embryonic development played a central role. Following this tradition, Alberch argued that, in order to attain a correct understanding of the role of embryological development in evolution, it was necessary to renounce the gradualist paradigm associated with the Darwinian interpretation of evolution, which understood nature as a continuum. The city and casino of Wiesbaden, capital of the German state Hessen, have endowed the Carol Nachman Prize to promote research work in the field of rheumatology since 1972. The prize, endowed with 37,500 €, is the second highest medical award in Germany and serves to promote clinical, therapeutic, and experimental research work in the field of rheumatology. In June 2022, the 50-year anniversary was celebrated. In the symposium preceding the award ceremony, an overview was given on the significance of spondyloarthritis for the work of the awardees in the past 30 years. Jürgen Boeckh, a respected pioneer of insect olfaction died shortly after his beloved wife Vera Boeckh, née von Zwehl, who pioneered insect vision. Both met in 1958, at the Zoological Institute in Munich. There, Jürgen worked in the group of his PhD advisor Dietrich Schneider, while Vera finished her PhD with Werner Jacobs before she joined the group of Hansjochem Autrum. There, Vera characterized the spectral sensitivity of bee photoreceptors, laying the physiological foundation of Karl von Frisch´s behavioral experiments with bee color vision. Meanwhile, Jürgen focused on the physiological characterization of insect antennal olfactory sensilla. In 1962 Vera and Jürgen married in Munich. Sadly, but characteristic of German woman at these times, Vera´s career ended after her marriage, while Jürgen moved with his mentor Schneider to the Max Planck Institute of Behavioral Physiology in Seewiesen near Munich, which became a famous cradle of insect neuroethology. Vera accompanied and supported her husband Jürgen´s career during his scientific Wanderschaft which ended in 1969, when Jürgen received a full professorship at the University of Regensburg. There, Jürgen became an accomplished German professor, focusing on insect olfaction from peripheral sensory transduction to information processing in the brain´s antennal lobe. After Jürgens retirement in 2000 they moved to Hopfen, Enzensberg near Füssen, where they enjoyed happy years together, before especially Vera´s health deteriorated. Introduction and Hypothesis: Vaginal hysterectomy (VH) was described as far back as 120 CE. However, it was not till the mid-1900s when reconstructive procedures were introduced to mitigate the risk of, or treat, pelvic organ prolapse in relation to VH. Furthermore, routine hysterectomy, particularly VH, has long been advocated in prolapse surgery. However, this indication is now questionable., Methods: Literature review to provide an overview of current evidence and experts' opinion regarding the relationship between VH and pelvic organ prolapse. The review presents a historical perspective on the role of VH in the management of pelvic organ prolapse, the current debate on the usefulness of the procedure in this context, a practical guide on operative techniques used during VH and the impact of recent surgical developments on its use., Results: Vaginal hysterectomy is a well-established technique that is still superior to laparoscopic hysterectomy for benign gynecological disease, although more surgically challenging. However, it is possible that some contemporary techniques, such as vaginal natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery, may overcome some of these challenges, and hence increase the number of hysterectomies performed via the vaginal route. Although patients should be counselled about uterine-sparing reconstructive surgery, vaginal hysterectomy continues to be a major surgical procedure in reconstructive pelvic floor surgery., Conclusions: Therefore, it is prudent to continue to train residents in vaginal surgical skills to ensure that they continue to provide safe, cost-effective, and comprehensive patient care., (© 2024. Nietzsche distinguishes four kinds of history: 'scientific,' 'monumental,' 'antiquarian,' and 'critical.' Scientific history, history as mere information, he claims, harms life. Nineteenth-century culture is so 'oversaturated' by information about past and alien cultures that it is succumbing to moral 'chaos' which leads to loss of moral confidence and thence to nihilism. Such 'chaos' is what the postmodernists call 'the postmodern condition,' but Nietzsche shows the 'condition' arrived not, as they suppose, in the mid-twentieth century, but almost a century earlier. 'Monumental' history is the ethical tradition of a community embodied in its 'exemplars' of moral greatness. Antiquarian history is 'love' of and 'loyalty' to those exemplars. 'Critical' history, the critical deconstruction of a former 'monument,' enables an ethical tradition to develop and adapt. Collectively, monumental, antiquarian, and critical history benefit 'life' by providing a flexible moral framework. Each, however, can be harmful through misuse. Critical history can be especially harmful because it easily metastasizes and 'annihilates' not just 'a part' of ethical tradition, but all of it. This hastens the arrival of the nihilism that is already threatened by 'scientific' history. I argue that contemporary 'cancel culture' is just metastasized critical history. One hundred years ago, Robert Feulgen published a landmark paper in which he described the first method to stain DNA in cells and tissues. Although a century has passed since the discovery by Feulgen and Rossenbeck, the chemical reaction still exerts an important influence in current histochemical studies. Its contribution in diverse fields, spanning from biomedicine to plant biology, has paved the way for the most significant studies that constitute our current knowledge. The possibility to specifically explore the DNA in cell nuclei while quantifying its content makes it a contemporary and timeless method. Indeed, many histocytochemical studies following the 1924 paper have led to a deep understanding of genome organization in general as well as several specific mechanisms (e.g. DNA duplication or tumour pathology) that, nowadays, constitute some of the most fundamental pillars in biological investigations.
