1. NNLO QCD predictions for Z-boson production in association with a charm jet within the LHCb fiducial region

Abstract

We compute next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD corrections to neutral vector boson production in association with a charm jet at the LHC. This process is studied in the forward kinematics at s=13 TeV, which may provide valuable constraints on the intrinsic charm component of the proton. A comparison is performed between fixed order and NLO predictions matched to a parton shower showing mutual compatibility within the respective uncertainties. NNLO corrections typically lead to a reduction of theoretical uncertainties by a factor of two and the perturbative convergence is further improved through the introduction of a theory-inspired constraint on the transverse momentum of the vector boson plus jet system. A comparison between these predictions with data will require an alignment of a flavour-tagging procedure in theory and experiment that is infrared and collinear safe.

2. Study of singly heavy baryon lifetimes

Abstract

We study the inclusive decay widths of singly heavy baryons with the improved bag model in which the unwanted center-of-mass motion is removed. Additional insight is gained by comparing the charmed and bottom baryons. We discuss the running of the baryon matrix elements and compare the results with the non-relativistic quark model (NRQM). While the calculated two-quark operator elements are compatible with the literature, those of the four-quark ones deviate largely. In particular, the heavy quark limit holds reasonably well in the bag model for four-quark operator matrix elements but is badly broken in the NRQM. We predict $1-\tau(\Omega_b)/ \tau(\Lambda_b^0) = (8.34\pm2.22)\%$ in accordance with the current experimental value of $(11.5^{+12.2}_{-11.6})\%$ and compatible with $(13.2\pm 4.7)\%$ obtained in the NRQM. We find an excellent agreement between theory and experiment for the lifetimes of bottom baryons. We confirm that $\Omega_c^0$ could live longer than $\Lambda_c^+$ after the dimension-7 four-quark operators are taken into account. We recommend to measure some semileptonic inclusive branching fractions in the forthcoming experiments to discern different approaches. For example, we obtain ${\cal BF} (\Xi_c^+ \to X e^+ \nu_e) = (8.57\pm 0.49)\% $ and ${\cal BF} (\Omega_c^0 \to X e^+ \nu_e) = (1.88\pm 1.69)\% $ in sharp contrast to ${\cal BF} (\Xi_c^+ \to X e^+ \nu_e) = (12.74^{+2.54}_{-2.45})\% $ and ${\cal BF} (\Omega_c^0 \to X e^+ \nu_e) = (7.59^{+2.49}_{-2.24})\% $ found in the NRQM., Comment: Accepted by JHEP, 39 pages, 4 figures

3. Combining QED and QCD transverse-momentum resummation for W and Z boson production at hadron colliders

Abstract

In this article, we consider the transverse momentum ($q_T$) distribution of $W$ and $Z$ bosons produced in hadronic collisions. We combine the $q_T$ resummation for QED and QCD radiation including the QED soft emissions from the $W$ boson in the final state. In particular, we perform the resummation of enhanced logarithmic contributions due to soft and collinear emissions at next-to-leading accuracy in QED, leading-order accuracy for mixed QED-QCD and next-to-next-to-leading accuracy in QCD. In the small-$q_T$ region we consistently include in our results the next-to-next-to-leading order (i.e.\ two loops) QCD corrections and the next-to-leading order (i.e.\ one loop) electroweak corrections. The matching with the fixed-order calculation at large $q_T$ has been performed at next-to-leading order in QCD (i.e.\ at $\mathcal{O}(\alpha_S^2)$) and at leading order in QED. We show numerical results for $W$ and $Z$ production at the Tevatron and the LHC. Finally, we consider the effect of combined QCD and QED resummation for the ratio of $W$ and $Z$ $q_T$ distributions, and we study the impact of the QED corrections providing an estimate of the corresponding perturbative uncertainties., Comment: 26 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

We use a Bayesian regression technique (similar to a recent analysis by Rinaldi et al) to obtain a central estimate for the $W$-boson mass using four different combinations of datasets compiled by the PDG including the 2022 CDF result. We use three different priors on the unknown intrinsic scatter and also a non-parametric hierarchical Dirichlet Process Gaussian Mixture model to obtain a world average for $W$-boson mass. We also evaluate the statistical significance of the discrepancy with respect to the Standard model for each of the datasets. We find that for all the combination of datasets and the aformentioned prior choices, the discrepancy with respect to the Standard Model value for the $W$-mass is less than 3$\sigma$. We also checked that if we use a narrow prior on the intrinsic scatter, we get a discrepancy of about 3.8$\sigma$ compared to the Standard model value., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures. Abstract

We explore the possibility of using superfluid helium for direct detection of sub-GeV dark matter (DM). We discuss the relevant phenomenology resulting from the scattering of an incident dark matter particle on a Helium nucleus. Rather than directly exciting quasi-particles, DM in this mass range will interact with a single He atom, triggering an atomic cascade which eventually also includes emission and thermalization of quasi-particles. We present in detail the analytical framework needed for modeling these processes and determining the resulting flux of quasi-particles. We propose a novel method for detecting this flux with modern force-sensitive devices, such as nanoelectro-mechanical system (NEMS) oscillators, and derive the sensitivity projections for a generic sub-GeV DM detection experiment using such sensors., 28 pages, 12 figures

6. Suppression of Higgs mixing by 'quantum Zeno effect'

Abstract

The Higgs portal interaction to a singlet sector of the standard model (SM) gauge group is widely-studied. In this Letter, we show that a quantum effect is important if the Higgs field mixes with another singlet scalar field whose decay rate is larger than the mass difference between the two mass eigenstates. This effect may be interpreted as the quantum Zeno effect. In either the quantum mechanics or the quantum field theory, we show that the resulting propagating mode is not the eigenstate of the mass matrix, but it is approximately the eigenstate of the interaction. As a consequence, the decoupling of the mixing effect happens at the infinity limit of the decay width of the exotic scalar even if the na\"{i}ve mixing parameter is not small. With a finite decay width of the exotic scalar, we derive the effective mass of the propagating mode in the SM sector, its decay rate, and the couplings at the 1-loop level. It turns out that the mixed mass eigenstates can mimic the discovered 125 GeV Higgs boson. This fuzzy Higgs boson can be obtained in a simple perturbative renormalizable model. It is consistent with the 125 GeV SM Higgs boson when the mass difference is smaller than ${\cal O}(0.1)$GeV (${\cal O}(1)$GeV) for ${\cal O}(1)$ (${\cal O}(0.01)$) mixing. We argue the possible natural scenario for the tiny mass splitting and the possibility that the upper bound of the mass difference is larger for a strongly-coupled singlet sector. To probe the fuzzy Higgs boson scenario, it is difficult to directly produce the singlet sector particles. Nevertheless, the future Higgs factories may probe this scenario by precisely measuring the Higgs boson invisible decay rate and the deviation of the Higgs coupling. Abstract

There has been significant work recently in developing machine learning (ML) models in high energy physics (HEP) for tasks such as classification, simulation, and anomaly detection. Often these models are adapted from those designed for datasets in computer vision or natural language processing, which lack inductive biases suited to HEP data, such as equivariance to its inherent symmetries. Such biases have been shown to make models more performant and interpretable, and reduce the amount of training data needed. To that end, we develop the Lorentz group autoencoder (LGAE), an autoencoder model equivariant with respect to the proper, orthochronous Lorentz group $\mathrm{SO}^+(3,1)$, with a latent space living in the representations of the group. We present our architecture and several experimental results on jets at the LHC and find it outperforms graph and convolutional neural network baseline models on several compression, reconstruction, and anomaly detection metrics. We also demonstrate the advantage of such an equivariant model in analyzing the latent space of the autoencoder, which can improve the explainability of potential anomalies discovered by such ML models., 11 pages, 7 figures, 4 tables, and a 3 page appendix

8. Charged Higgs induced 5 and 6 lepton signatures from heavy neutrinos at the LHC

Abstract

We propose an anomaly free gauged U$(1)$ extension of the SM where three right handed heavy neutrinos, being charged under the general U$(1)$ gauge group, are introduced to explain the origin of the tiny neutrino mass through the seesaw mechanism after the general U$(1)$ symmetry is broken. Due to the breaking of the general U$(1)$ symmetry a neutral beyond the standard model gauge boson $Z^\prime$ acquires mass. There are two Higgs doublets in this model where one interacts with the SM fermions and the other one interacts with the right handed heavy neutrinos and charged leptons. The charged multiplet of the second Higgs can completely decay into the heavy neutrinos and charged lepton in the neutrinophilic limit of the model parameters. The charged Higgs pair production can be influenced due to presence of the $Z^\prime$ boson at the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) in addition to the neutral SM gauge bosons. The pair produced charged Higgs bosons decay into SM charged leptons and heavy neutrinos. Following the leading decay modes of the heavy neutrinos into charged leptons and $W$ boson we study the 5 and 6 lepton final states after the leptonic and hadronic decay of the $W$ bosons considering solely muons and electrons in the final state. Combining the electron and muon final states we estimate the significance of the 5 and 6 charged lepton processes in the $m_{H^\pm}-m_N$ plane for different benchmark points of $m_{Z^\prime}$. It is found that the 5 (6) charged lepton processes could be probed at the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) with at least 5 (3) $\sigma$ significance and there are parameter regions where the significance could be larger., Comment: Published version in European Journal of Physics C

Abstract

We analyze the compatibility of the hypothesis of third-family quark-lepton unification at the TeV scale with electroweak precision data, lepton flavor universality tests, and high-$p_T$ constraints. We work within the framework of the UV complete flavor non-universal 4321 gauge model, which is matched at one loop to the Standard Model Effective Field Theory. For consistency, all electroweak precision observables are also computed at one loop within the effective field theory. At tree level, the most sizeable corrections are to $W\rightarrow \tau\nu_\tau$ and $Z \to \nu_\tau \nu_\tau$ due to integrating out a pseudo-Dirac singlet fermion required by the model for neutrino mass generation. At loop level, the new colored states of the model generate large flavor-universal contributions to the electroweak precision observables via leading- and next-to-leading log running effects, yielding a significant improvement in the electroweak fit (including an increase in the $W$-boson mass). These effects cannot be decoupled if the model addresses the charged-current $B$-meson anomalies. Abstract

Journal of high energy physics 05(5), 128 (2023). doi:10.1007/JHEP05(2023)128, We describe a number of improvements to the Geneva method for matching NNLO calculations to parton shower programs. In particular, we detail changes to the resummed calculation used in the matching procedure, including disentangling the cross section dependence on factorisation and beam scales, and an improved treatment of timelike logarithms. We also discuss modifications in the implementation of the splitting functions which serve to make the resummed calculation differential in the higher multiplicity phase space. These changes improve the stability of the numerical cancellation of the nonsingular term at small values of the resolution parameter. As a case study, we consider the gluon-initiated Higgs boson production process gg → H. We validate the NNLO accuracy of our predictions against independent calculations, and compare our showered and hadronised results with recent data taken at the ATLAS and CMS experiments in the diphoton decay channel, finding good agreement., Published by SISSA, [Trieste]

11. Top and bottom quark forward-backward asymmetries at next-to-next-to-leading order QCD in (un)polarized electron positron collisions

Abstract

We consider, at order $\alpha_s^2$ in the QCD coupling, top-quark pair production in the continuum at various center-of-mass energies and $b$-quark pair production at the $Z$ resonance by (un)polarized electron and positron beams. For top quarks we compute the forward-backward asymmetry with respect to the top-quark direction of flight, the associated polar angle distribution, and we analyze the effect of beam polarization on the QCD corrections to the leading-order asymmetry. We calculate also the polarized forward-backward asymmetry. For $b$-quark production at the $Z$ peak we explore different definitions of $A_{\rm FB}$. In particular, we analyze $b$ jets defined by the Durham and the flavor-$k_T$ clustering algorithms. We compute the inclusive $b$-jet and two-jet asymmetry with respect to the $b$-jet direction. For the latter asymmetry the QCD corrections to order $\alpha_s^2$ are small. Abstract

Using an effective field theory approach, we study coherent neutrino scattering on nuclei, in the setup pertinent to the COHERENT experiment. We include non-standard effects both in neutrino production and detection, with an arbitrary flavor structure, with all leading Wilson coefficients simultaneously present, and without assuming factorization in flux times cross section. A concise description of the COHERENT event rate is obtained by introducing three generalized weak charges, which can be associated (in a certain sense) to the production and scattering of $\nu_e$, $\nu_\mu$ and $\bar{\nu}_\mu$ on the nuclear target. Our results are presented in a convenient form that can be trivially applied to specific New Physics scenarios. In particular, we find that existing COHERENT measurements provide percent level constraints on two combinations of Wilson coefficients. These constraints have a visible impact on the global SMEFT fit, even in the constrained flavor-blind setup. The improvement, which affects certain 4-fermion LLQQ operators, is significantly more important in a flavor-general SMEFT. Abstract

The study of top-quark properties will be a central aspect of the physics programme of any future lepton collider. In this article, we investigate the production of top-quark pairs in the semi-leptonic decay channel in $\rm e^+e^-$ collisions, whose experimental signature is one charged lepton, jets, and missing energy. We present for the first time fiducial cross sections and differential distributions at next-to-leading-order accuracy in QCD for the full off-shell process. We find that the QCD corrections for the considered process are strongly dependent on the beam energies and range from few per cent up to more than $100\%$ (near threshold and above 1 TeV). We focus, in particular, on two scenarios: one close to threshold (365 GeV), dominated by top-pair production, and one at the TeV scale (1.5 TeV), for which irreducible-background contributions become relevant. Abstract

The production of lepton pairs (Drell-Yan process) at the LHC is being measured to high precision, enabling the extraction of distributions that are triply differential in the di-lepton mass and rapidity as well as in the scattering angle described by the leptons. The measurements are performed for a fiducial phase space, defined by cuts on the individual lepton momenta and rapidities. Based on the ATLAS triple-differential Drell-Yan measurement at 8 TeV, we perform a detailed investigation of the phenomenology of this process based on state-of-the-art perturbative predictions in QCD and the electroweak theory. Our results demonstrate the highly non-trivial interplay between measurement variables and fiducial cuts, which leads to forbidden regions at Born level, and induces sensitivity on extra particle emissions from higher perturbative orders. We also investigate the sensitivity of the measurement on parton distributions and electroweak parameters. We derive Standard-Model theory predictions which combine NNLO QCD and NLO EW corrections and include partial N3LO QCD as well as higher-order EW corrections where appropriate. Abstract

This paper presents a simplified likelihood framework designed to facilitate the reuse, reinterpretation and combination of LHC experimental results. The framework is based on the same underlying structure as the widely used HistFactory format, but with systematic uncertainties considered at linear order only. This simplification leads to large gains in computing performance for the evaluation and maximization of the likelihood function, compared to the original statistical model. The framework accurately describes non-Gaussian effects from low event counts, as well as correlated uncertainties in combinations. Abstract

The study of standard QCD jets produced along with fat jets, which may appear as a result of the decay of a heavy particle, has become an essential part of collider studies. Current jet clustering algorithms, which use a fixed radius parameter for the formation of jets from the hadrons of an event, may be inadequate to capture the differing radius features. In this work, we develop an alternative jet clustering algorithm that allows the radius to vary dynamically based on local kinematics and distribution in the $\eta$-$\phi$ plane inside each evolving jet. We present the usefulness of this dynamic radius clustering algorithm through two Standard Model processes, and thereafter illustrate it for a scenario beyond the Standard Model at the 13 TeV LHC., Comment: 33 pages, 13 figures, 2 tables

Abstract

During a cosmological first-order phase transition in a dark sector, fermion dark matter particles $\chi$ can form macroscopic Fermi balls that collapse to primordial black holes (PBHs) under certain conditions. The evaporation of the PBHs produces a boosted $\chi$ flux, which may be detectable if $\chi$ couples to visible matter. We consider the interaction of $\chi$ with electrons, and calculate signals of the dark matter flux in the XENON1T, XENONnT, Super-Kamiokande and Hyper-Kamiokande experiments. A correlated gravitational wave signal from the phase transition can be observed at THEIA and $\mu$Ares. 18. Global fit of modified quark couplings to EW gauge bosons and vector-like quarks in light of the Cabibbo angle anomaly

Abstract

There are two tensions related to the Cabibbo angle of the CKM matrix. First, the determinations of $V_{us}$ from $K_{\mu 2}$, $K_{\ell3}$, and $\tau$ decays disagree at the $3\sigma$ level. Second, using the average of these results in combination with $\beta$ decays (including super-allowed $\beta$ decays and neutron decay), a deficit in first-row CKM unitarity with a significance of again about $3\sigma$ is found. These discrepancies, known as the Cabibbo Angle anomaly, can in principle be solved by modifications of $W$ boson couplings to quarks. However, due to $SU(2)_L$ invariance, $Z$ couplings to quarks are also modified and flavour changing neutral currents can occur. In order to consistently assess the agreement of a new physics hypothesis with data, we perform a combined analysis for all dimension-six Standard Model Effective Field Theory operators that generate modified $W$ couplings to first and second generation quarks. We then study models with vector-like quarks, which are prime candidates for a corresponding UV completion as they can affect $W$-quark couplings at tree level, and we perform a global fit including flavour observables (in particular loop effects in $\Delta F=2$ processes). We find that the best fit can be obtained for the $SU(2)_L$ doublet vector-like quark $Q$ as it can generate right-handed $W$-$u$-$d$ and $W$-$u$-$s$ couplings as preferred by data., Comment: 46 pages, 16 figures. v2: Added references, minor numerical changes due to bug in code, conclusions unchanged. v3: journal version, minor clarifications added

Abstract

Data-driven methods are widely used to overcome shortcomings of Monte Carlo simulations (lack of statistics, mismodeling of processes, etc.) in experimental high energy physics. A precise description of background processes is crucial to reach the optimal sensitivity for a measurement. However, the selection of the control region used to describe the background process in a region of interest biases the distribution of some physics observables, rendering the use of such observables impossible in a physics analysis. Rather than discarding these events and/or observables, we propose a novel method to generate physics objects compatible with the region of interest and properly describing the correlations with the rest of the event properties. We use a generative adversarial network (GAN) for this task, as GANs are among the best generator models for various applications. We illustrate the method by generating a new misidentified photon for the $$\gamma + \textrm{jets}$$ γ + jets background of the $$\textrm{H}\rightarrow \gamma \gamma $$ H → γ γ analysis at the CERN LHC, and demonstrate that this GAN generator is able to produce a coherent object correlated with the different properties of the rest of the event.

Abstract

We improve QCD calculations of the $B_{d, s} \to \pi, K$ form factors at large hadronic recoil by implementing the next-to-leading-logarithmic resummation for the obtained leading-power light-cone sum rules in the soft-collinear effective theory (SCET) framework. Additionally, we endeavour to investigate a variety of the subleading-power contributions to these heavy-to-light form factors at ${\cal O}(\alpha_s^0)$, by including the higher-order terms in the heavy-quark expansion of the hard-collinear quark propagator, by evaluating the desired effective matrix element of the next-to-leading-order term in the ${\rm SCET_{I}}$ representation of the weak transition current, by taking into account the off-light-cone contributions of the two-body heavy-quark effective theory matrix elements as well as the three-particle higher-twist corrections from the subleading bottom-meson light-cone distribution amplitudes, and by computing the twist-five and twist-six four-body higher-twist effects with the aid of the factorization approximation. Having at our disposal the SCET sum rules for the exclusive $B$-meson decay form factors, we further explore in detail numerical implications of the newly computed subleading-power corrections by employing the three-parameter model for both the leading-twist and higher-twist $B$-meson distribution amplitudes. Taking advantage of the customary Bourrely-Caprini-Lellouch parametrization for the semileptonic $B_{d, s} \to \pi, K$ form factors, we then determine the correlated numerical results for the interesting series coefficients, by carrying out the simultaneous fit of the exclusive $B$-meson decay form factors to both the achieved SCET sum rule predictions and the available lattice QCD results., Comment: 74 pages, 15 figures

Abstract

Neutrino elastic scattering observation with NaI (NEON) is an experiment designed to detect neutrino-nucleus coherent scattering using reactor electron antineutrinos. NEON is based on an array of six NaI(Tl) crystals with a total mass of 13.3 kg, located at the tendon gallery that is 23.7 m away from a reactor core with a thermal power of 2.8 GW in the Hanbit nuclear power complex. The installation of the NEON detector was completed in December 2020, and since May 2021, the detector has acquired data at full reactor power. Based on the observed light yields of the NaI crystals of approximately 22, number of photoelectrons per unit keV electron-equivalent energy (keVee), and 6 counts/kg/keV/day background level at 2-6 keVee energy, coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering observation sensitivity is evaluated as more than 3$\sigma$ assuming one-year reactor-on and 100 days reactor-off data, 0.2 keVee energy threshold, and 7 counts/keV/kg/day background in the signal region of 0.2-0.5 keVee. This paper describes the design of the NEON detector, including the shielding arrangement, configuration of NaI(Tl) crystals, and associated operating systems. Abstract

We study pseudo-Dirac pairs of two almost mass degenerate sterile Majorana neutrinos which generate light neutrino masses via a low-scale seesaw mechanism. These pseudo-Dirac heavy neutral leptons can oscillate between interaction eigenstates that couple to leptons and antileptons and thus generate oscillations between lepton number conserving and lepton number violating processes. With the pSPSS we introduce a minimal framework capable of describing the dominant features of low-scale seesaws at colliders and present a FeynRules implementation usable in Monte Carlo generators. Abstract

The future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory, along with its primary capacity to elucidate the nuclear structure, will offer new opportunities to probe physics beyond the Standard Model coupled to the electroweak sector. Among the best motivated examples of such new physics are new heavy neutral leptons (HNLs), which are likely to play a key role in neutrino mass generation and lepton number violation. We study the capability of the EIC to search for HNLs, which can be produced in electron-proton collisions through charged current interactions as a consequence of their mixing with light neutrinos. We find that, with the EIC design energy and integrated luminosity, one is able to probe HNLs in the mass range of 1 GeV$-100$ GeV with mixing angles down to the order of $10^{-4} - 10^{-3}$ through the prompt decay, and $10^{-6} - 10^{-4}$ via the displaced decay signatures. We also consider the invisible mode where an HNL is undetected or decaying to dark sector particles. One could potentially probe heavy HNLs for mixing angles in the window $10^{-3}-10^{-2}$, provided SM background systematics can be brought under control. Abstract

We explore a model of dark matter (DM) that can explain the reported discrepancy in the muon anomalous magnetic moment and predict a large electric dipole moment (EDM) of the muon. The model contains a DM fermion and new scalars whose exclusive interactions with the muon radiatively generate the observed muon mass. Constraints from DM direct and indirect detection experiments as well as collider searches are safely evaded. The model parameter space that gives the observed DM abundance and explains the muon $g-2$ anomaly leads to the muon EDM of $d_{\mu} \simeq (4$-$5) \times 10^{-22} \, e \, {\rm cm}$ that can be probed by the projected PSI muEDM experiment. Abstract

Recent sky surveys have discovered a large number of stellar substructures. It is highly likely that there are dark matter (DM) counterparts to these stellar substructures. We examine the implications of DM substructures for electron recoil (ER) direct detection (DD) rates in dual phase xenon experiments. We have utilized the results of the LAMOST survey and considered a few benchmark substructures in our analysis. Assuming that these substructures constitute $\sim 10\%$ of the local DM density, we study the discovery limits of DM-electron scattering cross sections considering one kg-year exposure and 1, 2, and 3 electron thresholds. With this exposure and threshold, it is possible to observe the effect of the considered DM substructure for the currently allowed parameter space. We also explore the sensitivity of these experiments in resolving the DM substructure fraction. For all the considered cases, we observe that DM having mass $\mathcal{O}(10)\,$MeV has a better prospect in resolving substructure fraction as compared to $\mathcal{O}(100)\,$MeV scale DM. We also find that within the currently allowed DM-electron scattering cross-section; these experiments can resolve the substructure fraction (provided it has a non-negligible contribution to the local DM density) with good accuracy for $\mathcal{O}(10)\,$MeV DM mass with one electron threshold., Comment: 31 pages, 10 figures. Abstract

Motivated by the long-standing hints of lepton-flavour non-universality in the $b \to c \ell \nu$ and $b \to s \ell^+ \ell^-$ channels, we study Drell-Yan ditau production at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). In the context of models with third-generation gauge vector leptoquarks (LQs), we calculate the complete ${\cal O} (\alpha_s)$ corrections to the $pp \to \tau^+ \tau^-$ process, achieving next-to-leading order (NLO) plus parton shower (NLO$+$PS) accuracy using the POWHEG method. We provide a dedicated Monte Carlo code that evaluates the NLO QCD corrections on-the-fly in the event generation and use it to study the numerical impact of NLO$+$PS corrections on the kinematic distributions that enter the existing experimental searches for non-resonant ditau final states. Based on our phenomenological analysis we derive NLO accurate constraints on the masses and couplings of third-generation gauge vector LQs using the latest LHC ditau search results corresponding to an integrated luminosity of around $140 \, {\rm fb}^{-1}$ of proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13 \, {\rm TeV}$. We study the anomalous $t\bar{t}Z$ couplings in the $t\bar{t}Z$ production in leptonic final state at the $13$ TeV LHC. We use the polarizations of top quarks and $Z$ boson, two-body and three-body spin correlations among the top quarks and $Z$ boson, and the cross section to probe the anomalous couplings. Abstract

We report a new calculation of the soft-gluon threshold resummation for the Higgs boson pair production in the dominant production mode -- gluon-gluon fusion -- up to the next-to-next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic (N$^3$LL) accuracy. After matching N$^3$LL to the next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^3$LO) QCD calculation in the infinite top quark mass approximation, we show that the central values of the inclusive cross sections are quite stable with respect to N$^3$LO, while the conventional renormalisation and factorisation scale uncertainties are reduced by a factor of two, reaching to the subpercent level. Our study further consolidates the good asymptotic perturbative convergence. After combining with the full top-quark mass dependent next-to-leading order QCD results, our most advanced predictions are presented for both the inclusive total cross sections and the differential invariant mass distributions of the Higgs pair., 40 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables. v2: journal version (minor corrections wrt v1)

Abstract

Axion-like particles (ALPs) arise in a variety of theoretical contexts and can, in general, mediate flavor violating interactions and parity non-conservation. We consider lepton flavor violating ALPs with GeV scale or larger masses which may, for example, arise in composite dark sector models. We show that a future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) can uncover or constrain such ALPs via processes of the type $e \, A_Z \to \tau \, A_Z\, a$, where $A_Z$ is a nucleus of charge $Z$ and $a$ is an ALP in the range $m_\tau \leq m_a \lesssim 20$ GeV. The production of the ALP can have a large $Z^2$ enhancement from low $Q^2$ electromagnetic scattering of the electron from a heavy ion. Using the gold nucleus ($Z=79$) as an example, we show that the EIC can explore $e-\tau$ flavor violation, mediated by GeV-scale ALPs, well beyond current limits. Importantly, the EIC reach for this interaction is not sensitive to the lepton-flavor conserving ALP couplings, whose possible smallness can render searches using $\tau$ decays ineffective. We study the effects of an anomalous Z' boson on the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon (g-2), and especially the impact of its axial coupling. We mainly evaluate the negative contribution to (g-2) of such couplings at one-loop and look at the anomalous couplings generated at two loops. We find areas of the parameter space, where the anomalous contribution becomes comparable and even dominant compared to the one-loop contribution. We show that in such cases, the cutoff of the theory is sufficiently low, so that new charged fermions can be found in the next round of collider experiments. Abstract

We analytically calculate the neutrino conversion probability $P_{\mu e}$ in the presence of sterile neutrinos, with exact dependence on $\Delta m^2_{41}$ and with matter effects explicitly included. Using perturbative expansion in small parameters, the terms involving the small mixing angles $\theta_{24}$ and $\theta_{34}$ can be separated out, with $\theta_{34}$ dependence only arising due to matter effects. We express $P_{\mu e}$ in terms of the quantities of the form $\sin(x)/x$, which helps in elucidating its dependence on matter effects and a wide range of $\Delta m^2_{41}$ values. Our analytic expressions allow us to predict the effects of the sign of $\Delta m^2_{41}$ at a long baseline experiment like DUNE. We numerically calculate the sensitivity of DUNE to the sterile mass ordering and find that this sensitivity can be significant in the range $|\Delta m^2_{41}| \sim (10^{-4} - 10^{-2})$ eV$^2$, for either mass ordering of active neutrinos. Abstract

We study the LHC discovery potential in the search for heavy neutral leptons (HNL) with a new signature: a displaced shower in the CMS muon detector, giving rise to a large cluster of hits forming a displaced shower. A new Delphes module is used to model the CMS detector response for such displaced decays. We reinterpret a dedicated CMS search for neutral long-lived particles decaying in the CMS muon endcap detectors for the minimal HNL scenario. We demonstrate that this new strategy is particularly sensitive to active-sterile mixings with $\tau$ leptons, due to hadronic $\tau$ decays. HNL masses between $\sim 1 - 6$ GeV can be accessed for mixings as low as $|V_{\tau N}|^{2}\sim 10^{-7}$, probing unique regions of parameter space in the $\tau$ sector., Comment: 16 pages, 3 figures. Abstract

The ionization loss of a high-energy electron-positron pair in thin targets is considered. The analogue of the Landau distribution function is derived for this loss under the condition when the Chudakov effect of the pair ionization loss suppression is manifested. Expression for the most probable value of the pair ionization loss $E_{MP}$ is obtained. It is shown that the magnitude of Chudakov effect for $E_{MP}$ can be noticeably different from the magnitude of this effect for the restricted mean value of the pair ionization loss., Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures

Abstract

We present next-to-leading order QCD and electroweak (EW) theory predictions for $V+2\,$jet production, with $V=Z,W^{\pm}$, considering both the QCD and EW production modes and their interference. We focus on phase-space regions where $V+2\,$jet production is dominated by vector-boson fusion, and where these processes yield the dominant irreducible backgrounds in searches for invisible Higgs boson decays. Predictions at parton level are provided together with detailed prescriptions for their implementation in experimental analyses based on the reweighting of Monte Carlo samples. The key idea is that, exploiting accurate data for $W+2\,$jet production in combination with a theory-driven extrapolation to the $Z+2\,$jet process can lead to a determination of the irreducible background at the few-percent level. Particular attention is devoted to the estimate of the residual theoretical uncertainties due to unknown higher-order QCD and EW effects and their correlation between the different $V+2\,$jet processes, which is key to improve the sensitivity to invisible Higgs decays., Comment: 26 pages, 16 Figures

Abstract

The European physical journal / C 83(5), 438 (2023). doi:10.1140/epjc/s10052-023-11427-9, This paper presents a measurement of b-jet production in Pb+Pb and pp collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_\text {NN}}}=5.02$ TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The measurement uses 260 $\text {pb}^{-1}$ of pp collisions collected in 2017 and 1.4 $\text {nb}^{-1}$ of Pb+Pb collisions collected in 2018. In both collision systems, jets are reconstructed via the anti-$k_{t}$ algorithm. The b-jets are identified from a sample of jets containing muons from the semileptonic decay of b-quarks using template fits of the muon momentum relative to the jet axis. In pp collisions, b-jets are reconstructed for radius parameters $R= 0.2$ and $R= 0.4$, and only $R= 0.2$ jets are used in Pb+Pb collisions. For comparison, inclusive $R= 0.2$ jets are also measured using 1.7 $\text {nb}^{-1}$ of Pb+Pb collisions collected in 2018 and the same pp collision data as the b-jet measurement. The nuclear modification factor, $R_\text {AA}$, is calculated for both b-jets and inclusive jets with $R= 0.2$ over the transverse momentum range of 80–290 GeV. The nuclear modification factor for b-jets decreases from peripheral to central collisions. The ratio of the b-jet $R_\text {AA}$ to inclusive jet $R_\text {AA}$ is also presented and suggests that the $R_\text {AA}$ for b-jets is larger than that for inclusive jets in central Pb+Pb collisions. Abstract

Accurate neutrino-nucleus interaction modeling is an essential requirement for the success of the accelerator-based neutrino program. As no satisfactory description of cross sections exists, experiments tune neutrino-nucleus interactions to data to mitigate mis-modeling. In this work, we study how the interplay between near detector tuning and cross section mis-modeling affects new physics searches. We perform a realistic simulation of neutrino events and closely follow NOvA’s tuning, the first published of such procedures in a neutrino experiment. We analyze two illustrative new physics scenarios, sterile neutrinos and light neutrinophilic scalars, presenting the relevant experimental signatures and the sensitivity regions with and without tuning. While the tuning does not wash out sterile neutrino oscillation patterns, cross section mis-modeling can bias the experimental sensitivity. In the case of light neutrinophilic scalars, variations in cross section models completely dominate the sensitivity regardless of any tuning. Our findings reveal the critical need to improve our theoretical understanding of neutrino-nucleus interactions, and to estimate the impact of tuning on new physics searches. We urge neutrino experiments to follow NOvA’s example and publish the details of their tuning procedure, and to develop strategies to more robustly account for cross section uncertainties, which will expand the scope of their physics program.

Abstract

The Scotogenic model extends the standard model with three singlet fermion $N_i$ and one inert doublet scalar $\eta$ to address the common origin of tiny neutrino mass and dark matter. For fermion dark matter $N_1$, a hierarchical Yukawa structure $|y_{1e}|\ll|y_{1\mu}|\sim|y_{1\tau}|\sim\mathcal{O}(1)$ is usually favored to satisfy constraints from lepton flavor violation and relic density. Such large $\mu$-related Yukawa coupling would greatly enhance the pair production of charged scalar $\eta^\pm$ at the muon collider. In this paper, we investigate the dilepton signature of the Scotogenic model at a 14 TeV muon collider. For the dimuon signature $\mu^+\mu^-+/ \hspace{-0.65em} E_T$, we find that most viable samples can be probed with $200~\text{fb}^{-1}$ data. The ditau signature $\tau^+\tau^-+/ \hspace{-0.65em}E_T$ is usually less promising but is important to probe the small $|y_{1\mu}|$ region. The mono-photon signature $\gamma+/ \hspace{-0.65em} E_T$ could also probe the compressed mass region $M_1\lesssim M_{\eta^\pm}$. Abstract

The Taishan Antineutrino Observatory (TAO or JUNO-TAO) is a satellite experiment of the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO). Located near a reactor of the Taishan Nuclear Power Plant, TAO will measure the reactor antineutrino energy spectrum with an unprecedented energy resolution of $$ < 2 % at 1 MeV. Energy calibration is critical to achieve such a high energy resolution. Using the Automated Calibration Unit (ACU) and the Cable Loop System (CLS), multiple radioactive sources are deployed to various positions in the TAO detector for energy calibration. The residual non-uniformity can be controlled within 0.2%. The energy resolution degradation and energy bias caused by the residual non-uniformity can be controlled within 0.05% and 0.3%, respectively. The uncertainty of the non-linear energy response can be controlled within 0.6% with the radioactive sources of various energies, and could be further improved with cosmogenic $$^{12}{\textrm{B}}$$ 12 B which is produced by the interaction of cosmic muon in the liquid scintillator. The stability of other detector parameters, e.g., the gain of each Silicon Photo-multiplier, will be monitored with an ultraviolet LED calibration system.

Abstract

The amount of energy released by a nuclear recoil ionizing the atoms of the active volume of detection appears "quenched" compared to an electron of the same kinetic energy. This different behavior in ionization between electrons and nuclei is described by the Ionization Quenching Factor (IQF) and it plays a crucial role in direct dark matter searches. For low kinetic energies (below $50~\mathrm{keV}$), IQF measurements deviate significantly from common models used for theoretical predictions and simulations. We report measurements of the IQF for proton, an appropriate target for searches of Dark Matter candidates with a mass of approximately 1 GeV, with kinetic energies in between $2~\mathrm{keV}$ and $13~\mathrm{keV}$ in $100~\mathrm{mbar}$ of methane. We used the Comimac facility in order to produce the motion of nuclei and electrons of controlled kinetic energy in the active volume, and a NEWS-G SPC to measure the deposited energy. The Comimac electrons are used as reference to calibrate the detector with 7 energy points. A detailed study of systematic effects led to the final results well fitted by $\mathrm{IQF}~(E_K)= E_K^\alpha~/~(\beta + E_K^\alpha)$ with $\alpha=0.70\pm0.08$ and $\beta = 1.32\pm0.17$. In agreement with some previous works in other gas mixtures, we measured less ionization energy than predicted from SRIM simulations, the difference reaching $33\%$ at $2~\mathrm{keV}$, Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

The European physical journal / C 82(11), 1031 (2022). doi:10.1140/epjc/s10052-022-10795-y, High-energy tau neutrinos are rarely produced in atmospheric cosmic-ray showers or at cosmic particle accelerators, but are expected to emerge during neutrino propagation over cosmic distances due to flavor mixing. When high energy tau neutrinos interact inside the IceCube detector, two spatially separated energy depositions may be resolved, the first from the charged current interaction and the second from the tau lepton decay. We report a novel analysis of 7.5 years of IceCube data that identifies two candidate tau neutrinos among the 60 “High-Energy Starting Events” (HESE) collected during that period. The HESE sample offers high purity, all-sky sensitivity, and distinct observational signatures for each neutrino flavor, enabling a new measurement of the flavor composition. The measured astrophysical neutrino flavor composition is consistent with expectations, and an astrophysical tau neutrino flux is indicated at 2.8σ significance., Published by Springer, Heidelberg

42. Doubly charged Higgs boson production at hadron colliders II: a Zee-Babu case study

Abstract

Motivated by searches for so-called leptonic scalars at the LHC and the recent measurement of the $W$ boson's mass at the Tevatron, we revisit the phenomenology of the Zee-Babu model for neutrino masses and the ability to differentiate it from the Type II Seesaw model at the LHC. We conclude that this task is much more difficult than previously believed. All inputs equal in the two scenarios, we find that total and differential rates for producing pairs of doubly and singly charged scalars are identical in shape and only differ in normalization. The normalization is given by the ratio of hadronic cross sections and can be unity. Differences in cross sections are small and can be hidden by unknown branching rates. This holds for Drell-Yan, $\gamma\gamma$ fusion, and $gg$ fusion, as well as observables at LO and NLO in QCD. This likeness allows us to reinterpret Run II limits on the Type II Seesaw and estimate projections for the HL-LHC. Using updated neutrino oscillation data, we also find that some collider observables, e.g., lepton flavor-violating branching ratios, are now sufficiently precise to provide a path forward. Other means of discrimination are also discussed. Abstract

Moments of the leptonic angular distribution in the Drell-Yan process have recently been shown to be sensitive probes of a specific class of dimension-8, four-fermion operators in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory, involving a pair of quarks and leptons. The same operators are also subject to positivity bounds, when requiring the associated (unknown) UV completion to obey basic principles of quantum field theory. We perform a phenomenological study to quantify the sensitivity of the high-luminosity LHC to this set of operators and, by extension, the positivity bounds. We further extend the angular basis of moments and consider double differential information to improve the ability to disentangle the different operators, leading to a sensitivity to new physics scales up to 3 TeV. We use this information to explore the violation of positivity at the LHC as a way to test the underlying principles of quantum field theory. Finally, we present a case study which combines our results with information from other (current and prospective) experiments, as well as the positivity cone to infer the properties of possible tree-level UV completions. The data lead to robust, model-independent lower bounds on the $M/\sqrt{g}$ combination of the particle mass and coupling, for states that couple to right-handed leptons and/or up quarks., 54 pages, 8 figures, 9 tables, version to appear in JHEP

Abstract

We study a bino-like light neutralino ($\tilde \chi_1^0$) produced at the LHC from the decay of a scalar lepton ($\tilde e_L$) through the process $pp\to \tilde e_{L} \to e\tilde \chi_1^0$ in the context of R-parity-violating (RPV) supersymmetry where $\tilde \chi_1^0$ is the lightest supersymmetric particle. For small masses and RPV couplings, the neutralino is naturally long-lived and its decay products can be identified as displaced tracks. Following existing searches, we propose a displaced-vertex search strategy for such a light neutralino with a single RPV coupling switched on, $\lambda'_{111}$, in the mass range $10\,\mbox{GeV} \lesssim m_{\tilde \chi_1^0}\lesssim 230\,\mbox{GeV}$. We perform Monte Carlo simulations and conclude that at the high-luminosity LHC, the proposed search can probe values of $\lambda'_{111}$ down to two orders of magnitude smaller than current bounds and up to 40 times stronger than projected limits from monolepton searches., Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures; v2: comment added, matches version to be published in JHEP

Abstract

The concept of a small, single-layer water Cherenkov detector,with three photomultiplier tubes (PMTs), placed at its bottom in a 120◦ star configuration (Mercedes Water Cherenkov Detector) is presented. The PMTs are placed near the lateral walls of the stations with an adjustable inclination and may be installed inside or outside the water volume. To illustrate the technical viability of this concept and obtain a first-order estimation of its cost, an engineering designwas elaborated. The sensitivity of these stations to low energy Extensive Air Shower (EAS) electrons, photons and muons is discussed, both in compact and sparse array configurations. It is shown that the analysis of the intensity and time patterns of the PMT signals, using machine learning techniques, enables the tagging of muons, achieving an excellent gamma/hadron discrimination for TeV showers. This concept minimises the station production and maintenance costs, allowing for a highly flexible and fast installation. Abstract

We present a machine learning approach for model-independent new physics searches. The corresponding algorithm is powered by recent large-scale implementations of kernel methods, nonparametric learning algorithms that can approximate any continuous function given enough data. Based on the original proposal by D'Agnolo and Wulzer (arXiv:1806.02350), the model evaluates the compatibility between experimental data and a reference model, by implementing a hypothesis testing procedure based on the likelihood ratio. Model-independence is enforced by avoiding any prior assumption about the presence or shape of new physics components in the measurements. We show that our approach has dramatic advantages compared to neural network implementations in terms of training times and computational resources, while maintaining comparable performances. In particular, we conduct our tests on higher dimensional datasets, a step forward with respect to previous studies., 22 pages, 13 figures

Abstract

We consider a $U(1)_{B-L}$ model with a $Z^\prime$ portal Dirac fermion dark matter (DM) $\chi$ of low mass which couples very weakly to the $B - L$ gauge boson $Z^\prime$. An arbitrary $B-L$ charge $Q\neq \pm1, \pm 3$ of the DM $\chi$ ensures its stability. Motivated by the sensitivity reach of forthcoming "Lifetime Frontier" experiments, we focus on the $Z^\prime$ mass, $m_{Z^\prime}$, in the sub-GeV to few GeV range. To evaluate the DM relic abundance, we examine both the freeze-out and freeze-in DM scenarios. For the freeze-out scenario, we show that the observed DM abundance is reproduced near the $Z^\prime$ resonance, $m_\chi \simeq m_{Z^\prime}/2$, where $m_\chi$ is the DM mass. For the freeze-in scenario, we focus on $m_\chi \ll m_{Z^\prime}$. We show that for a fixed value of $m_{Z^\prime}$, $g_{BL}$ values roughly scale as $1/Q$ to reproduce the observed DM abundance. For various $Q$ values in the range between $10^{-6}$ and $10^2$, we show that the gauge coupling values $g_{BL}$ needed to reproduce the observed DM abundance lie in the search reach of future planned and/or proposed experiments such as FASER, Belle-II, LDMX, and SHiP. Abstract

Background modelling is one of the main challenges in particle physics data analysis. Commonly employed strategies include the use of simulated events of the background processes, and the fitting of parametric background models to the observed data. However, reliable simulations are not always available or may be extremely costly to produce. As a result, in many cases, uncertainties associated with the accuracy or sample size of the simulation are the limiting factor in the analysis sensitivity. At the same time, parametric models are limited by the a priori unknown functional form and parameter values of the background distribution. These issues become ever more pressing when large datasets become available, as it is already the case at the CERN Large Hadron Collider, and when studying exclusive signatures involving hadronic backgrounds. Two novel and widely applicable non-parametric data-driven background modelling techniques are presented, which address these issues for a broad class of searches and measurements. The first, relying on ancestral sampling, uses data from a relaxed event selection to estimate a graph of conditional probability density functions of the variables used in the analysis, accounting for significant correlations. A background model is then generated by sampling events from this graph, before the full event selection is applied. In the second, a generative adversarial network is trained to estimate the joint probability density function of the variables used in the analysis. The training is performed on a relaxed event selection which excludes the signal region, and the network is conditioned on a blinding variable. Subsequently, the conditional probability density function is interpolated into the signal region to model the background. Abstract

We study the flavor structure of the lepton and baryon number--conserving dimension-6 operators in the Standard Model effective field theory (SMEFT). Building on the work of [1], we define several well-motivated flavor symmetries and symmetry-breaking patterns that serve as competing hypotheses about the ultraviolet (UV) dynamics beyond the SM, not far above the TeV scale. In particular, we consider four different structures in the quark sector and seven in the charged lepton sector. The set of flavor-breaking spurions is (almost) always taken to be the minimal one needed to reproduce the observed charged fermion masses and mixings. For each case, we explicitly construct and count the operators to the first few orders in the spurion expansion, providing ready-for-use setups for phenomenological studies and global fits. 50. Lepton flavor violation and scotogenic Majorana neutrino mass in a Stueckelberg U(1) X model

Abstract

We construct a scotogenic Majorana neutrino mass model in a gauged $U(1)_X$ extension of the standard model, where the mass of the gauge boson and the unbroken gauge symmetry, which leads to a stable dark matter (DM), can be achieved through the Stueckelberg mechanism. It is found that the simplest version of the extended model consists of the two inert-Higgs doublets and one vector-like singlet fermion. In addition to the Majorana neutrino mass, we study the lepton flavor violation (LFV) processes, such as $\ell_i \to \ell_j \gamma$, $\ell_i \to 3 \ell_j$, $\mu-e$ conversion rate in nucleus, and muonium-antimuonium oscillation. We show that the sensitivities of $\mu\to 3e$ and $\mu-e$ conversion rate designed in Mu3e and COMET/Mu2e experiments make both decays the most severe constraints on the $\mu\to e$ LFV processes. It is found that $\tau\to \mu \gamma$ and $\tau\to 3\mu$ can reach the designed significance level of Belle II. In addition to explaining the DM relic density, we also show that the DM-nucleon scattering cross section can satisfy the currently experimental limit of DM direct detection., Comment: 31 pages, 12 figures
