Abstract

Abstract Trimethylamine-n-oxide (TMAO) is a metabolite of intestinal flora following the consumption of phosphatidylcholine-rich foods. Clinical cohort studies have shown that plasma TMAO may be a risk factor for cancer development, including hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), but fundamental research data supporting this hypothesis are lacking. In this study, HCC cells were treated with TMAO in vivo and in vitro to evaluate the effect on some indicators related to the malignancy degree of HCC, and the relevant molecular mechanisms were explored. In vitro, TMAO promoted the proliferation and migration of HCC cells and significantly upregulated the expression of proteins related to epithelial–mesenchymal transformation (EMT). In vivo, after HCC cells were inoculated subcutaneously in nude mice given water containing TMAO, the tumors grew faster and larger than those in the mice given ordinary water. The immunohistochemistry analysis showed that proliferation, migration and EMT-related proteins in the tumor tissues were significantly upregulated by TMAO. Furthermore, TMAO obviously enhanced the phosphorylation of MAPK signaling molecules in vivo and in vitro. In conclusion, TMAO promotes the proliferation, migration and EMT of HCC cells by activating the MAPK pathway.

Abstract

This paper aims to explore the changes of supervision model in higher education in relation to fostering creative PhD students in China. The changes are being made from the traditional Apprentice Master Model (AMM) to the modern Collaborative Cohort Model (CCM). According to the results of the empirical work done by questionnaire survey and interviews, this study shows in the background of the Big Science Era and according to theories on systematic view of creativity, the new CCM improves PhD students’ creativity to some extent; however, problems exist in the creativity development mechanisms. So this paper also explores the reasons of why the new mechanism of creativity development failed to play fully.

Abstract

Different pedagogical strategies influence the development of creativity in project groups in science and engineering education . This study is a comparison between two cases: Problem-Based Learning (PBL) in Denmark and Project-Organized Learning (POL) in China. The empirical resources are based on the results from a Master’s study that was carried out with respect to POL in China (2004–2007) and a Ph.D. study that was conducted with respect to PBL in Denmark (2008–2012). The results suggest: (1) there are many diverse influencing elements in learning environments of creativity in both PBL in Denmark and POL in China, and there are interactions between the different elements that underpin a systematic view of the influences of project contexts on creativity; and (2) supervisors in China and Denmark have different attitudes towards the development of creativity in students, which reveals the differences in the learning cultures and the implications for improvements in the fostering of creativity through project strategies in engineering and science education for the future.

Abstract

As recent studies have discussed problem-based learning (PBL) as a popular model of fostering creativity, this paper aims to explore a research question: How can we bridge creativity and group work using elements of PBL to deepen understanding of PBL as a tool for creative learning? A theoretical framework aiming to respond to this question will be provided from a literature review. Accordingly, five elements include (1) group learning, (2) problem solving, (3) interdisciplinary learning, (4) project management, and (5) facilitation. These main elements show PBL is a suitable learning environment to develop individual creativity and to stimulate interplay of individual and group creativity. This study builds a theoretical model, urging a systematic view of PBL in creative facilitation and also indicates its practical significance and potential questions for future investigation.
