TEX has always been regarded as the most elegant and powerful system for computer typesetting. However, its widespread use, beyond academia, was hampered by its complexity. Recently, fairly good TEX implementations have come out for PCs putting TEX on the desks of many people: writers, designers, desktop publishers, engineers, and consequently, the interest in TEX has surged. What is needed at this point is a book that teaches step-by-step how to use TEX, illustrating each step by meaningful examples. This is exactly what S.v. Bechtolsheim's book does. The last two decades have witnessed a revolution in the realm of typography, with the virtual disappearance of hot-lead typesetting in favor of the so-called digital typesetting. The principle behind the new technology is simple: imagine a very fine mesh superimposed on a sheet of paper. Digital typesetting consists in darkening the appropriate pixels (tiny squares) of this mesh, in patterns corresponding to each character and symbol of the text being set. The actual darkening is done by some printing device, say a laser printer or phototypesetter, which must be told exactly where the ink should go. Since the mesh is very fine-the dashes surrounding this sentence are some six pixels thick, and more than 200 pixels long-the printer can only be controlled by a computer program, which takes a'high-level'description of the page in terms of text, fonts, and formatting commands, and digests all of that into'low-level'commands for the printer. TEX is such a program, created by Donald E. Knuth, a computer scientist at Stanford University.

TEX is the program for printing high quality mathematical text to which all others are compared. It is flexible enough to be used on many different computer architectures and operating systems ranging from microcomputers to mainframes. In a relatively short period of time it has become the standard tool for mathematical typesetting at practically all major universities. The versality of TEX has allowed it to be used in a wide variety of applications; for example, it is used for publishing scholarly journals which adhere to the highest typesetting standards, and also to publish student papers and theses. This book is designed for the complete newcomer to TEX. It starts by showing how to typeset simple text that mostly uses the defaults predefined by TEX. By use of graded exercises, the situations covered slowly become more complex and include many different types of mathematical constructions and tables. In the end it is possible to handle almost any standard mathematical situation. The different tables presented in this book allow it to be used as a quick reference. The similar features of TEX are gathered together whenever possible to give an overview that is a good foundation forbecoming more proficient and for doing more creative typesetting. This book can be used either as a tool to learn just enough TEX to write standardmathematical papers of modest complexity or as a building block to prepare for more ambitious typesetting projects.

This book explores a great number of concepts, methods, technologies, and tools-in one word resources-that apply to various domains of typesetting. These resources have been developed and are used by the members of a very special community of people, which is also a community of very special people: the T^X community. To understand the motivation that led these special people to develop and use these resources, I believe it is necessary to make a short flashback. Since it is true that the past (uniquely?) determines the present and the future, I decided to divide this foreword into three parts: The Past, The Present, and The Future. At this point, I am asking the readers to excuse my tendency of sometimes becoming autobiographic. This is very hard to avoid when talking about people and events important to one's life, and, after all, avoiding it could mean betraying the subject I would like to talk about.
