Organic composts such as "bokashi", obtained from the fermentation of bran mixtures and inoculated with microorganisms, improve soil characteristics. In Brazil, the most widely used formulation for the production of this compost is obtained from a mixture of wheat and castor bean bran, but both have a high monetary cost. Replacing these components with regionally available sources represents the possibility of reducing costs and making more sustainable use of this waste. The aim of this study was to analyze the chemical characteristics and determine the availability of nitrogen for the plants. The study was divided into two stages, consisting of an incubation test in the laboratory and a bioassay in the greenhouse using forage sorghum as an indicator species. In the laboratory trial, the treatments consisted of two raw material sources with a low C/N ratio (castor bean bran-CAB and cottonseed bran-COB), corresponding to 40% of the mixture; three sources with a high C/N ratio (wheat bran-WHB or rice bran-RIB), gradually replaced by passion fruit peel bran-PFPB), corresponding to 60% of the mixture. The materials were mixed, moistened, inoculated with microorganisms (Embiotic ® ) and kept in sealed containers with a capacity of 620 cm 3 for 21 days. In the greenhouse, in addition to the aforementioned treatments, seven controls were included: no addition of organic and synthetic N sources; ammonium nitrate; CAB; COB; WHB; RIB and PFPB. In the second stage, dry mass production and N content in sorghum plant tissues were determined, and the rates of N availability were estimated. It was found that the pH of the standard compost was 4.75, and in the other formulations it ranged from 4.62 to 5.3, the highest values being observed when WHB was fully replaced by RIB There was a significant difference in the EC values, but all were well below the value considered adequate. Replacing CAB with COB and WHB with RIB and PFPB resulted in a reduction in N content and an increase in the C:N ratio. Replacing WHB with PFPB led to an increase in K content and a reduction in P and Mg content. In the bioassay, the highest biomass production was in the treatments with the fermented composts, and the highest biological recovery of N was obtained in the ammonium nitrate treatment, followed by the CAB, COB and WHB treatments., (© 2024. The historical impacts of eutrophication processes were investigated in six subtropical reservoirs (São Paulo, Brazil) using a paleolimnological approach. We questioned whether the levels of pigment indicators of algal biomass could provide information about trophic increase and whether carotenoid pigments could offer additional insights. The following proxies were employed: organic matter, total phosphorus, total nitrogen, photosynthetic pigments (by high-performance liquid chromatography), sedimentation rates, and geochronology (by 210 Pb technique). Principal component analysis indicated a gradient of eutrophication. In eutrophic reservoirs (e.g., Rio Grande and Salto Grande), levels of lutein and zeaxanthin increased over time, suggesting growth of Chlorophyta and Cyanobacteria. These pigments were significantly associated with algal biomass, reflecting their participation in phytoplankton composition. In mesotrophic reservoirs, Broa and Itupararanga, increases and significative linear correlations (r > 0.70) between pigments and nutrients are mainly linked to agricultural and urban activities. In the oligotrophic reservoir Igaratá, lower pigment and nutrient levels reflected lesser human impact and good water quality. This study underscores eutrophication's complexity across subtropical reservoirs. Photosynthetic pigments associated with specific algal groups were informative, especially when correlated with nutrient data. The trophic increase, notably in the 1990s, may have been influenced by neoliberal policies. Integrated pigment and geochemical analysis offers a more precise understanding of eutrophication changes and their ties to human factors. The nitrogen (N) cycle from the catchment to the downstream reservoir is complex, particularly the quantification of N losses. However, in order to assess the nitrogen impact in a reservoir ecosystem, simplified models may be applicable regarding the TN load production and the magnitude of lake TN removal. This study presented a methodology to perform and validate a TN mass balance to further calibrate a simplified coefficient for TN losses (v f. ) in 29 tropical semiarid reservoirs. The study reservoirs were highly productive ecosystems with an average total nitrogen (TN) concentration, accounting for all measurements in all reservoirs, ranging from 0.59 to 3.84 mg L -1 . Regarding the production of TN load, the median values ranged from 4.35 to 2,499.43 t year -1 with median of 80.34 t year -1 . The TN loads were estimated through an annual mass balance over a 24-year period. The median of the estimates was compared with reference values obtained by using the export modelling coefficient. The correlation between the median estimated and reference loads resulted in satisfactory agreement (r 2 0.88) and reinforced the reliability of the mass balance alternative. From the validated TN loads, the TN uptake velocity (v f ) was estimated for all reservoirs (44.9 ± 20.1 m year -1 ) and could be described as a general function of the water residence time. The reservoirs of the study region have demonstrated higher v f than temperate lakes and reservoirs and similar v f with Latin America/Caribbean ones. As expected, reservoirs of warmer climates tend to present intensified N loss processes compared to lakes and reservoirs of temperate regions. Understanding the seasonal patterns and influencing factors of nitrogen atmospheric deposition is essential to evaluate human impacts on the air quality and nitrogen biogeochemical cycle. However, evaluation of the nitrogen deposition flux, especially in South America agricultural regions, has not been fully investigated. In this paper, we quantified the atmospheric wet deposition fluxes of total dissolved nitrogen (TDN), dissolved organic nitrogen (DON), and dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), in a region with agricultural and livestock predominance in the Southern Minas Gerais region, Brazil, from May 2018 to April 2019. Deposition fluxes of nitrogen species in the wet season (October-March) were on average 4.8-fold higher than those in the dry season, which revealed significant seasonal variations driven largely by the seasonality of rainfall and agricultural operations. We also found high NO 3 - /NH 4 + ratios (average = 8.25), with higher values in dry season (NO 3 - /NH 4 +  = 12.8) in comparison with wet season (NO 3 - /NH 4 +  = 4.48), which revealed a higher relative contribution of NO x emissions from traffic sources in dry season. We also estimated the influence of atmospheric deposition of inorganic nitrogen (N-DIN) on environmental ecosystems, being 2.01 kgNha -1  year -1 with potential risk of acidification and eutrophication of 30%. Sediment cores were used to establish past environmental impacts associated with eutrophication, erosion and metal contamination in the subtropical Atibainha reservoir (São Paulo State, Brazil). We hypothesize that: (1) the levels of nutrients, determined by a spectrophotometric method, reflect the contributions of these elements over time and (2) changes in sedimentation rates, determined by 210 Pb geochronology, and metal flows, determined by ICP-AEOS, are related to anthropic activities. Stratigraphic changes in the analysed variables were used to divide the sediment cores into three intervals, according to PCA and cluster analysis (Euclidian distances, Ward's method). Interval I, composed by the period prior to operation of the reservoir, was influenced by organic matter levels. Interval II, between 1967 and 1993 (PC2: 14.94% of the total variability), a period of minor impacts, was mainly influenced by Mn (eigenvalue of 0.71) and Zn (0.74). Interval III, which included sediment deposited between 1993 and 2015 (PC1: 60.28% of the total variability), was influenced by the highest levels of the pigments lutein (0.86), zeaxanthin (0.90) and fucoxanthin (0.65), together with total nitrogen (0.78) and sedimentation rate (0.91), suggesting changes in the phytoplankton community composition probably associated to the intensification of eutrophication and erosion processes. Despite the limitations of applying paleolimnological techniques in reservoirs and the use of pigments as proxies in regions with higher temperatures, it was observed that the anoxic conditions and the aphotic environment in the hypolimnion acted to preserve pigments associated with the groups Chlorophyta (lutein), Cyanobacteria (zeaxanthin) and Bacillariophyta (fucoxanthin). The isolated analysis of nutrients was not sufficient to make conclusive inferences regarding the eutrophication history, since the levels of TP tended to decrease over time, in contrast to an increase in the levels of TN. A significant contributor to water pollution is increased nutrient concentration that results in eutrophication. Modeling approaches are crucial to understanding the dynamics of nutrients in river basins. This study integrates empirical models into Geographic Information Systems to quantify total nitrogen and phosphorus (TN and TP) load and concentration in watercourses of Brazil's Lobo Stream Hydrographic Basin (LSHB). Land use, topographic, demographic, and hydrological data were used to simulate the load and concentration of nutrients generated by point and nonpoint pollution sources. The results indicate that the simulated TN and TP load is primarily generated by nonpoint sources, 81% and 76%, respectively. The Itaqueri River subbasin is the most critical, yielding more than half of the basin's TN and TP load. About 90% of annual LSHB point pollution load is generated in the Itaqueri River subbasin, principally from the Água Branca Stream. The linear regression between simulated and observed concentration indicates significant relationships (TN, r 2 = 0.73 (p < 0.05), TP, r 2 = 0.78 (p < 0.05)). The method used was able to simulate TN and TP concentration in watercourses, but was inconsistent for point pollution, indicating it represents the dynamics of nutrients in rural basins more effectively than in urban ones. The study shows that its methodology, despite limitations, enables scientists and managers to understand and predict spatial distribution of nutrient concentration in LSHB watercourses.

The water quality and trends in 12 tropical rivers in northeastern Brazil over a 27-year period (1990-2016; N = 39,008 samples) were evaluated. The analyzed parameters included temperature, conductivity, pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), nitrogen (NH 4 + ), total phosphorus (P), and fecal coliforms. Densely populated basins (> 1000 inhab km -2 ) presented lower DO values (average 3.4 mg l -1 ; 43% DO saturation), while those with low demographic density (< 100 inhab km -2 ) presented values that aligned well with the recommendations of environmental legislation (average 5.8 mg l -1 ; 75% DO saturation). The NH 4 + and P compound concentrations were typical of water bodies affected by urban inputs. The average p values were above the allowable limit (< 0.1 mg l -1 ) at all stations. The NH 4 + values were high at the stations showing low DO concentrations, which suggested that due to reducing conditions after NH 4 + accumulation was favored in those aquatic systems. In densely populated basins, the average fecal coliform concentrations were > 40,000 MPN 100 ml -1 , indicating the input of improperly treated domestic/industrial liquid wastes. For the period from 1990 to 2016, 45% of the stations (N = 19) showed a rate of DO reduction that ranged from 0.01 to 0.17 mg l -1 .O 2 year -1 . An increase in NH 4 + concentrations was observed in 33% of the stations (N = 14), with an estimated average increase rate from 0.013 to 1.8 mg l -1 NH 4 + year -1 . These results demonstrated that the rates of increase in anthropogenic factors were significant (p < 0.05), while the natural factors remained constant.

The establishment of reference conditions and typology are two important steps in water resources management. The reference conditions enable the determination of how impacted an ecosystem is, while the typology facilitates the implementation of management procedures. A study of subtropical reservoirs in São Paulo State (Brazil) was performed to obtain (1) an abiotic typology, using principal component analysis (PCA) and cluster analysis (Ward's method with Euclidean distances), and (2) reference conditions for total phosphorus (TP), total nitrogen (TN), and chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) in the dry and rainy seasons for one of the established typologies. Two main statistical techniques were used: the lake population distribution approach and the trisection method. PCA identified an environmental gradient in the east-west direction, with reservoirs at higher latitudes and with larger dimensions in the west, and smaller reservoirs in eastern areas with higher altitude and higher average annual rainfall. The PCA and cluster analysis indicated that there were four main types of reservoirs. The nutrient criteria techniques, obtained for 13 type I rainy-east reservoirs, were not significantly different (t test, p < 0.05). Although the methods resulted in similar reference conditions, one-way ANOVA indicated significant differences between the seasons for Chl-a, which levels were slightly higher in the rainy season. As far as we know, this is the first study to simultaneously provide an abiotic typology and reference conditions for chlorophyll-a and nutrients in different seasons, considering subtropical reservoirs in South America. This investigation makes an important contribution to the monitoring and management of subtropical reservoirs, and the promotion of dialog between the scientific community and managers, aiming at ensuring the sustainability of water bodies.

In this study, the efficiency of contaminant removal from a compact wastewater treatment plant (CWTP) in a university campus under different rain conditions was evaluated. Wastewater samples were collected weekly for 1 year and the physicochemical parameters were monitored. Removal efficiency higher than 77%, reaching values above 95% for samples with lower wastewater flow rates, was found for biological oxygen demand (BOD) and total and fecal coliforms. The pH values remained in the range of 6.0-8.0. However, pH values below 6.8 impaired the nitrification rate and, therefore, the removal of total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN) and ammonia was lower than the expected, with concentration values above those set by the Brazilian regulation for wastewater discharge. The results show that the flow rate of wastewater at the entrance of the CWTP is directly related to the rain events, thus affecting its efficiency, mainly in the removal of total solids, turbidity, and organic matter. The assessment of the treated wastewater reuse on site for agricultural purposes showed to be a prominent and more sustainable alternative regarding the discharge of wastewater into water bodies.

The implications of land use change in small watersheds through the conversion of forests to agropastoral areas have altered the natural nutrient cycle, intensifying exports under freshwater ecosystems. This study aimed to investigate the land use effects on nutrient and sediment exports in two small watersheds in northeastern Brazil to understand if anthropogenic disturbance alters the structure end functioning of these systems. Thus, land use mapping and hydrological treatment of a digital elevation model were made to characterize the basins. Water samples were collected monthly from Aug. 2016 to Jan. 2017 to evaluate suspended sediments and dissolved nutrient fluxes ([Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], and dissolved organic nitrogen and phosphorus). The results indicated that land use change had a greater influence on exports from the most disturbed basin, where the nutrient and sediment increments were respectively an average 6.61 and 5.81 times higher than the most preserved basin. Thus, the conservation status of the forest cover has influenced the assimilation capacity of diffuse loads, highlighting the differences between the microbasins of this study.

Nitrogen (N) inputs originated from shrimp farming effluents were evaluated for potential changes in the net N mineralization for mangrove soils from Northeastern Brazil. Our study provides notable information and assessment for the potential enhancement of N mineralization in preserved and shrimp-impacted semi-arid mangrove soils of the Jaguaribe River estuary, which is one of the largest shrimp producers of Brazil, using an analytical and daily tidal variation experimental approach. Nitrogen-rich effluents promoted a significant (p value < 0.001) increase of the total soil N content (1998 ± 201 mg kg -1 on average) compared with the preserved sites (average: 1446 ± 295 mg kg -1 ). The effluents also increased the N mineralization in the shrimp-impacted sites (N-min: 86.6 ± 37.5 mg kg -1 ), when compared with preserved mangroves (N-min: 56.5 ± 23.8 mg kg -1 ). Over a daily tidal variation experiment, we found that just 30% (36.2 ± 20.6 mg kg -1 ) of mineralized N remains stored in the soil, whereas 70% (102.9 ± 38.8 mg kg -1 ) was solubilized in tidal waters. Therefore, the N mineralization process may trigger eutrophication by increasing N inorganic bioavailability in mangrove soils receiving N-rich effluents from shrimp ponds, which in turn might increase primary producers' activity. This approach has not been studied so far in semi-arid mangroves, where the shrimp farming activity is one of the most important economic activities.

The externalities generated by disorderly urbanization and lack of proper planning becomes one of the main factors that must be considered in water resource management. To address the multiple uses of water and avoid conflicts among users, decision-making must integrate these factors into quality and quantity aspects. The water quality index (WQI), using the correlation matrix and the multivariate principal component analysis (PCA) and cluster analysis (CA) techniques were used to analyze the surface water quality, considering urban, rural, and industrial regions in an integrated way, even with data gaps. The results showed that the main parameters that impacted the water quality index were dissolved oxygen, elevation, and total phosphorus. The results of PCA analysis showed 86.25% of the variance in the data set, using physicochemical and topographic parameters. In the cluster analysis, the dissolved oxygen, elevation, total coliforms, E. coli, total phosphorus, total nitrogen, and temperature parameters showed a significant correlation between the data's dimensions. In the industrial region, the characteristic parameter was the organic load, in the rural region were nutrients (phosphorus and nitrogen), and in the urban region was E. coli (an indicator of the pathogenic organisms' presence). In the classification of the samples, there was a predominance of "Good" quality, however, samples classified as "Acceptable" and "Bad" occurred during the winter and spring months (dry season) in the rural and industrial regions. Water pollution is linked to inadequate land use and occupation and population density in certain regions without access to sanitation services.

Freshwater bodies experience diel variations in aquatic chemistry, driven by natural processes. However, changes in land use, like urbanization, can modify the natural dynamics of such systems. This article describes changes in biogeochemistry of a pristine stream after receiving untreated sewage of an urban nucleus. Water samples were collected and field parameters measured, during low flow period. Temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, electric conductivity, turbidity, total suspended solids, silicate, N-NO 3 , N-NO 2 , N-NH 4 , dissolved and particulate organic nitrogen, PO 4 , and dissolved and particulate organic phosphorus were measured hourly during a diel cycle. Upstream hydrochemistry resembles pristine watersheds in tropical rainforest, and results are restricted to a narrow range of values during the entire sampling period. Conversely, values downstream varied widely and, for some analytes, presented differences between day and night. Dissolved oxygen and electric conductivity showed the effect of the urban pulse, varying according to the routine of the population. Other field parameters did no presents a pattern that could distinguish up- and downstream stations. All the nutrients, but silicate, increased in concentration downstream. Particulate organic phosphorus, N-NO 2 , and N-NH 4 were the nutrients that highlight the magnitude of the changes driven by urban effluents. These three nutrient species, and dissolved organic phosphorus, revealed a remarkably pattern that reflects the routine of the urban population, with low concentrations at night and a progressive increase starting at the early morning.

Water shortage is a current problem faced by many regions. The deterioration of water bodies driven by the directly discard of untreated wastewater worsens the water shortage and implies in more costly treatments to meet local standards for water quality. In rural areas, the problem is even worse, once conventional centralized treatment plants do not encompass them. Decentralized treatment systems must present low-cost, local availability, standards-meeting efficiency, and simplified operation. The present study examines the combined use of algae turf scrubber and down-flow vertical constructed wetlands for a University's sanitary wastewater treatment. After a hydraulic detention time of 21 days, the unit was able to reach 49%, 48%, 98%, 82%, 99.2%, 70.1%, 44%, 83%, 72%, 86%, 69%, 95%, and 99.9% for conductivity, total soluble solids, turbidity, apparent color, N-NH 3 , total nitrogen, P-soluble, total carbon, chemical oxygen demand, inorganic carbon, TOC, Escherichia coli, and total coliforms. In accord to the Brazilian standard ABNT 13969/97, the treated effluent is eligible for reuse in floor and sidewalks washing, garden irrigation, and landscaping purposes.

Eutrophication is a natural process within the ecological succession of aquatic ecosystems that results from nutrient inputs to water bodies, especially limiting elements such as phosphorus and nitrogen. However, the anthropogenic activities in river basin influence areas accelerate the eutrophication process of water bodies. Eutrophication is a global problem and considered one of the most relevant reasons of aquatic environments' degradation. In this context, watercourses that make up the Eastern Water Planning and Management Region (RPGA) receive high pollutant contributions due to release of wastewater and agriculture diffuse sources from cities located in influence area. The present study aims to evaluate the land use effect in trophic state of the water bodies in Eastern RPGA basins. The Carlson Trophic State Index in 1977, adjusted by Lamparelli 2004, was used to determine the eutrophication degree of the three river basins (Almada, Cachoeira, and Una) located in the Eastern RPGA. The nutrient and chlorophyll a data were obtained from the Monitoring Program (Monitora) of Environment and Water Resources Institute of Bahia (INEMA), covering the period from 2008 to 2015, at thirteen (13) sampling sites, with quarterly collections. The results showed that, among three basins analyzed, Cachoeira River basin presented the worst values for trophic state index (TSI) due to the high level of anthropization, while best results were found in Una basin. It was verified that land use exerted a significant influence on the water quality of bodies of water evaluated.

Watershed studies that account for nutrient loadings are crucial for suitable river basin and estuarine management. This study aims to contribute to the environmental planning and decision making regarding nitrogen and phosphorus loadings for the watershed of the Vitória Bay Estuarine System (VBES; 1925 km 2 ) in southeast Brazil. Here, we estimate that the VBES had annual loadings (in 2016) from ten tributary river basins of 5480 and 10,784 t for P and N, respectively, based on emission factors for natural and anthropogenic sources. The main contribution sources were related to livestock farming (4801 t of P and 8000 t of N) and domestic wastewater (492 t of P and 1706 t of N). However, urban loadings have higher expressions when considering the input by watershed area (0.25 and 0.87 t km -2  year -1 of P and N yields, respectively), which are mainly due to wastewater since 70% of the sewage is untreated. Urban emissions play a prominent role and have a tendency to be aggravated due to Brazilian population growth (0.8% annual rate). If the current wastewater emissions continue, P and N loadings will likely increase by 1.316% to totals of 713 and 2474 t year -1 in 2050 for P and N, respectively. Considering that the wastewater tertiary treatment cost is US$ 0.50 m -3 , and that in the future 70% of all wastewater will be collected, the P and N loadings will drop to 18.4 and 424.1 t year -1 , respectively, with a treatment cost of 25 million USD year -1 . The model holds well for non-regulated watersheds. However, for regulated basins, such as the Santa Maria de Vitória, the model overestimates the loadings mainly due to the damming systems in these watersheds (accounting for 49% retention of P and 0.13% retention of N).

Although sludge piles from drinking water treatment plants can contain harmful substances, in many countries, their disposal methods are still unregulated. Besides aluminum, which is a major constituent in these residues, many other contaminants-like trace metals-can be present and may result from the quality of the raw materials used for water treatment. The application of these chemicals for the treatment of drinking water can generate toxic sludge and contaminate the produced water. In the present work, mercury contamination in the sludge piles of two drinking water treatment plants located along the margins of the Juturnaíba Reservoir, Southeast Brazil, was evaluated to verify whether contaminants are incorporated during water treatment. In the summer 2012, five cores were collected from the piles, and were analyzed for Eh, granulometry, total carbon, total nitrogen, and total mercury. The results indicated an anoxic environment, reflecting composition of the suspended matter. Carbon and nitrogen presented elevated concentrations, but also seemed to reproduce the characteristics of the suspended matter in the raw water. The concentrations of mercury were extremely variable but presented unexpectedly high values in some of the layers, reaching 18,484 ng g -1 . On the other hand, concentrations ten times lower than those observed in the natural system (8 ng g -1 ) could be observed. It was concluded that the only possible source for the contamination of the sludge was the chemicals used for water treatment.

This long-term study, performed during the years 2003-2005 and 2008-2009, investigated the carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) contents of the phyto- and zooplankton communities and the nutrient regime of Cabo Frio Bay, SE Brazil. The information intends to serve as baseline of the plankton C, N, and P stoichiometry for the calibration of biogeochemical and ecological models in support to future findings related to the local and regional phenomena of climatic change. Cabo Frio Bay is a small semienclosed system set adjacent to a region subject to sporadic coastal upwelling. Zooplankton exhibited average annual C, N, and P contents of 11.6 ± 6.9 %, 2.8 ± 1.8 %, and 0.18 ± 0.08 %, and phytoplankton (>20 μm) 6.8 ± 6.0 %, 1.6 ± 1.5 %, and 0.09 ± 0.08 %, respectively. The C/N/P ratios correspond to the lowest already found to date for a marine environment. The low C contents must have been brought about by a predominance of gelatinous zooplankton, like Doliolids/ Salps and also Pteropods. Average annual nutrient concentrations in the water were 0.21 ± 0.1 μM for phosphate, 0.08 ± 0.1 μM for nitrite, 0.74 ± 1.6 μM for nitrate, and 1.27 ± 1.1 μM for ammonium. N/P ratios were around 8:1 during the first study period and 12:1 during the second. The plankton C/N/P and N/P nutrient ratios and elemental concentrations suggest that the system was oligotrophic and nitrogen limited. The sporadic intrusions of upwelling waters during the first study period had no marked effect upon the systems metabolism, likely due to dilution effects and the short residence times of water of the bay.

The aquatic systems responsible for water supply in the Brazilian Federal District (FD) have been threatened by anthropogenic pressures, especially considering the expressive demographic increase in the region during the last decades. The purposes of this research were: (a) to assess the water quality in streams located in the FD by monitoring physical-chemical variables; (b) to define baselines for these variables among different ecological status categories. The 14 investigated streams were sampled between 2006 and 2009, in the dry (August-September, 2006, 2008, 2009) and rainy (March-April, 2008, 2009) seasons. All sampling sites were classified in four categories ("very impacted", "impacted", "in transition" and "natural") using an adaptation of a rapid habitat assessment protocol. Differences in water quality among sites were generally well predicted in the four ecological status categories defined by the protocol, which showed a gradient in nutrient concentrations from reference sites classified as "natural" (medians: electrical conductivity = 7.3 μS cm(-1); nitrate = 0.040 mg L(-1); ammonium = 0.039 mg L(-1); soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) = <0.001 mg L(-1); total phosphorus (TP) = 0.006 mg L(-1); ) to those classified as "very impacted" (medians: electrical conductivity = 87.7 μS cm(-1); nitrate = 0.247 mg L(-1); ammonium = 0.219 mg L(-1); SRP = 0.010 mg L(-1); TP = 0.035 mg L(-1)). Point sources inputs were the main factor for water quality deterioration. The nutrient baselines reported were relatively low when compared to data collected from reference areas in Brazil (e.g., São Paulo State) or temperate regions, especially for TP.

This work presents a liquid disposal monitoring originated from uranium enrichment process at Aramar Experimental Center from 1990 to 1998. Assessment of uranium, fluorides, ammoniacal nitrogen, chemical oxygen demand, and pH measurements were made in water samples and compared with results achieved in other countries, as North America and India. The liquid disposal evaluation, generated by uranium enrichment process, showed low levels, considering most parameters established by Federal and State Legislation, aiming environmental pollution control. However, uranium levels were above the limits established by Conselho Nacional do Meio Ambiente, Environment Protection Agency and mainly by the World Health Organization.

One of the most cultivated and consumed vegetables in Brazil is the common bean, Phaseolus vulgaris L. The symbiosis of this plant species with nitrogen-fixing bacteria that are adapted to the stresses commonly found in tropical soils can increase production. The aim of this study was to evaluate the symbiotic effectiveness of bacterial strains from soils under different land uses in the Amazon region. Further, rhizobia tolerance to acidity and aluminium and the involvement of some possible physiological mechanisms of such tolerance were also investigated. In assessing the efficiency of biological nitrogen fixation, inoculation with strains UFLA04-195, UFLA04-173 and UFLA04-202, belonging to the genus Rhizobium, resulted in greater plant growth, higher shoot nitrogen content and good nodulation compared to the inoculation with the strain CIAT 899 (R. tropici), and to the mineral nitrogen control or Burkholderia fungorum strains that nodulated or not bean plants. These efficient strains grew better at pH 5.0 than at pH 6.0 or pH 6.9; they also tolerated up to 1 mmol l(-1) of Al(3+) and showed an increased production of exopolysaccharides where the growing rates were less (pH 6.0 and pH 6.9). With respect to aluminium, the highest production of EPS produced greater tolerance to this element. Taken together, these results indicate that the strains evaluated in this study were tolerant to acidity and aluminium; they appeared to have developed resistance mechanisms such as EPS production and a resistant cell outer membrane (indicated by resistance to polymyxin and methyl violet). As these strains also gave increased yields of the host species, further studies on whether to recommend these strains as inoculants are already underway.

Brazil has succeeded in sustaining production of soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merrill] by relying mainly on symbiotic N(2) fixation, thanks to the selection and use in inoculants of very effective strains of Bradyrhizobium japonicum and Bradyrhizobium elkanii. It is desirable that rhizobial strains used in inoculants have stable genetic and physiological traits, but experience confirms that rhizobial strains nodulating soybean often lose competitiveness in the field. In this study, soybean cultivar BR 16 was single-inoculated with four B. japonicum strains (CIAT 88, CIAT 89, CIAT 104 and CIAT 105) under aseptic conditions. Forty colonies were isolated from nodules produced by each strain. The progenitor strains, the isolates and four other commercially recommended strains were applied separately to the same cultivar under controlled greenhouse conditions. We observed significant variability in nodulation, shoot dry weight, shoot total N, nodule efficiency (total N mass over nodule mass) and BOX-PCR fingerprinting profiles between variant and progenitor strains. Some variant strains resulted in significantly larger responses in terms of shoot total N, dry weight and nodule efficiency, when compared to their progenitor strain. These results highlight the need for intermittent evaluation of stock bacterial cultures to guarantee effective symbiosis after inoculation. Most importantly, it indicates that it is possible to improve symbiotic effectiveness by screening rhizobial strains for higher N(2) fixation capacity within the natural variability that can be found within each progenitor strain.

The Northeastern semi-arid Brazilian region is experiencing rapid social and economic development based on improving water management and even in areas of low human occupation, anthropogenic emissions of N and P surpass natural emissions in at least one order of magnitude and these additional loads can alter the water quality of the receiving estuaries. This study estimates, using an emission factor approach, the annual emissions of N and P from natural processes and anthropogenic sources for estuaries along the Ceará State, NE Brazil. Emission factors from natural sources are one to two orders of magnitude lower than those for anthropogenic sources. Among the anthropogenic activities, the aquaculture is responsible for most N emission (0.52 t km(-2) year(-1)) followed by waste water and husbandry. For P, the largest average emission factors are from husbandry (0.30 t km(-2) year(-1)), waste water and agriculture.

This study evaluates the spatial patterns of land occupation and their relationship to water quality in the Cuiabá River watershed, one of the main affluents of the Pantanal floodplain. The impact of farming and other land occupation forms were studied using a three year time series. Monitoring included 15 parameters at 21 stations with a total of 1266 different samples. Ten stations along the Cuiabá River were ordinated by Principal Component Analysis (PCA). For an exploratory analysis in the spatial domain, sub-basins of the Cuiabá watershed were classified according to mean concentrations of selected water quality parameters. Supervised classification of digital Landsat ETM imagery and standard GIS techniques were applied to parameterize land use and occupation according to a watershed scale. Redundancy Analysis (RDA) was then used to evaluate impacts of environmental and socio-economic factors on water quality. A Cuiabá headwater station only shows slightly elevated total coliform counts and concentrations of nutrients in the river after it passes regions of extensive cattle farming. After the confluence with the Manso River, nutrient and COD concentrations increase significantly, receiving loads from sub-basins under intensive agricultural land use, with mean annual concentrations up to 1.74 mg/L of total nitrogen (Kjedahl). Sub-watersheds with intensive fishing culture activities were shown to have significant impact on nitrogen concentrations, reaching mean concentrations of 2.66 mg/L of total nitrogen in the affluents. Most serious biological and chemical water pollution can be observed at stream outlets in the urban agglomeration of Cuiabá/Várzea Grande. Affluent pollution is reflected in the water quality of the Cuiabá River: subsequent monitoring stations in the urban area are ordinated on a gradient of increasing degradation of chemical and biological water quality. The auto-depuration capacity of the Cuiabá River is intact, but elevated concentrations of Phosphorous and Chemical Oxygen Demand can be observed as far away as the Pantanal floodplain, about 120 km downstream from the urban agglomeration.
