In traditional Internet of Things (IoT) systems, sensor nodes are usually powered by batteries, and their limited battery power leads to limited system lifetimes and prevents the large-scale promotion of IoT; this is commonly referred to as the energy bottleneck. The subsequent emergence of Wireless Power Transmission (WPT) technology enables IoT nodes to replenish their energy through wireless charging, giving rise to the novel network paradigm of Wireless Rechargeable Sensor Networks (WRSNs). This has made it possible to solve the IoT energy bottleneck and extend IoT system lifetimes. This book elaborates on the theory and technical paradigms of WRSNs. The topics discussed include the energy efficiency, schedulability and reliability of WRSNs, as well as their potential intersections with other fields. Specifically, this book 1) proposes the theory of optimal scheduling of spatio-temporal correlation power supply for large-scale WRSNs; 2) analyses in depth the shortcomings and hidden risks of existing WRSN hardware and protocols, and proposes the concept of charging attack and the theory of trusted scheduling; and 3) introduces a radio electromagnetic signal propagation model into the design of charging deployment methods in complex environments, revealing a new dimension of charging efficiency optimization. The methods described here will lay the theoretical foundation for extending WRSN lifetimes and provide a new theoretical model for WRSN security and reliability, accelerating the development of these networks from multiple perspectives.

Optical networks are leaving the labs and becoming a reality. Despite the current crisis of the telecom industry, our everyday life increasingly depends on communication networks for information exchange, medicine, education, data transfer, commerce, and many other endeavours. High capacity links are required by the large futemet traffic demand, and optical networks remain one of the most promising technologies for meeting these needs. WDM systems are today widely deployed, thanks to low-cost at extreme data rates and high reliability of optical components, such as optical amplifiers and fixed/tunable filters and transceivers. Access and metropolitan area networks are increasingly based on optical technologies to overcome the electronic bottleneck at the network edge. Traditional multi-layer architectures, such as the widely deployed IP/ATM/SDH protocol stack, are increasingly based on WDM transport; further efforts are sought to move at the optical layer more of the functionalities available today in higher protocol layers. New components and subsystems for very high speed optical networks offer new design opportunities to network operators and designers. The trends towards dynamically configurable all-optical network infrastructures open up a wide range of new network engineering and design choices, which must face issues such as interoperability and unified control and management.

We dedicate this book to students 0/ computer science who want to under­ stand why the radio channel is at the heart of mobile communications, be it data or voice, and to students 0/ communications engineering looking for an introduction to the structure of the Internet protocols, and their application to mobile radio. We also welcome the practicing engineer'working for mobile network operators and infrastructure suppliers, and the application program­ mer looking for the underlying reasons for the problems they encounter in their daily work. Given that convergence of the information technology and communica­ tions worlds has been talked about for almost 20 years, there is still surpris­ ingly little knowledge among specialists of each others'fields. Data communi­ cations over radio, notably Internet access, however, requires fuH understand­ ing of both fields. Internet protocols have been designed for fixed networks. There bit errors are so rare that interrupted transmission almost inevitably means congestion. In contrast, the radio channel constitutes a bottleneck for mobile data communications in that it introduces bit errors even at modest data rates. This book is based on the doctoral thesis of one of us (M. Taferner).

This book answers a question which came about while the author was work­ ing on his diploma thesis [1]: would it be better to ask for the available band­ width instead of probing the network (like TCP does)? The diploma thesis was concerned with long-distance musical interaction ('NetMusic'). This is a very peculiar application: only a small amount of bandwidth may be necessary, but timely delivery and reduced loss are very important. Back then, these require­ ments led to a thorough investigation of existing telecommunication network mechanisms, but a satisfactory answer to the question could not be found. Simply put, the answer is'yes'- this work describes a mechanism which indeed enables an application to'ask for the available bandwidth'. This obvi­ ously does not only concern online musical collaboration any longer. Among others, the mechanism yields the following advantages over existing alterna­ tives: • good throughput while maintaining close to zero loss and a small bottleneck queue length • usefulness for streaming media applications due to a very smooth rate • feasibility for satellite and wireless links • high scalability Additionally, a reusable framework for future applications that need to'ask the network'for certain performance data was developed.

Optical networks, employing Wavelength-Division Multiplexing (WDM) and wavelength routing, are believed to be the answer for the explosion in IP traffic and the emergence of real-time multimedia applications. These networks offer quantum leaps in transmission capacity as well as eliminate the electronic bottleneck in existing metropolitan and backbone networks. During the last decade, we witnessed a tremendous growth in the theoretical and experimental studies focusing on the cost-effective deployment of wavelength­ routed networks. The majority of these studies, however, assumed ideal behavior of optical devices. In this book, we argue that for the successful deployment of optical networks, design algorithms and network protocols must be extended to accommodate the non-ideal behavior of optical devices. These extensions should not only focus on maintaining acceptable signal quality (e.g., 12 maintaining BER above 10-), but should also motivate the development of optimization algorithms and signaling protocols which take transmission impairments into consideration. In addition, the design of enabling technologies, such as optical cross-connects, should be transmission-efficient. This book is a comprehensive treatment of the impact of transmission impairments on the design and management of wavelength-routed networks. We start with transparent networks, focusing on power implications such as cross-connect design, device allocation problems, and management issues. In this all-optical model, we propose a design space based on reduction in overall cost and ease of network management. This design concept, motivates various switch architectures and different optimization problems.

Preface Due to the development of hardware technologies (such as VLSI) in the early 1980s, the interest in parallel and distributive computing has been rapidly growingandinthelate1980sthestudyofparallelalgorithmsandarchitectures became one of the main topics in computer science. But in the last decade or so the main interest in parallel and distributive computing moved from the design of parallel algorithms and expensive parallel computers to the new distributive reality – the world of interconnected computers that cooperate (often asynchronously) in order to solve di?erent tasks. Communication became one of the most frequently used terms of computer science because of the following reasons: (i) Considering the high performance of current computers, the communi- tion is often moretime consuming than the computing time of processors. As a result, the capacity of communication channels is the bottleneck in the execution of many distributive algorithms. (ii) Many tasks in the Internet are pure communication tasks. We do not want to compute anything, we only want to execute some information - change or to extract some information as soon as possible and as cheaply as possible. Also, we do not have a central database involving all basic knowledge. Instead, wehavea distributed memorywherethe basickno- edgeisdistributedamongthelocalmemoriesofalargenumberofdi?erent computers. The growing importance of solving pure communication tasks in the - terconnected world is the main motivation forwriting this book.

CHARME'99 is the tenth in a series of working conferences devoted to the dev- opment and use of leading-edge formal techniques and tools for the design and veri?cation of hardware and systems. Two invited talks illustrate major current trends: the presentation by G´erard Berry (Ecole des Mines de Paris, Sophia-Antipolis, France) is concerned with the use of synchronous languages in circuit design, and the talk given by Peter Jansen (BMW, Munich, Germany) demonstrates an application of formal methods in an industrial environment. This book begins with discussing the fundamentals of Simultaneously Transmitting and Reflecting Surfaces (STARS) from the electromagnetic (EM) and communication perspectives.
