Calibration of Terra and Aqua MODIS reflective solar bands (RSB) has evolved significantly since the launch of the first MODIS instrument on the Terra satellite more than 21 years ago. In NASA’s current Collection 6 and 6.1 Level 1B products (C6/C6.1 L1B), the RSB calibration algorithm continues to rely primarily on the onboard solar diffuser to calibrate the instrument gain. Lunar observations are used to track on-orbit changes in the response versus scan angle (RVS), and data from pseudo-invariant desert sites are used to apply adjustments to the gain and RVS calibration for select bands. The resulting reflectance products have in general shown a very stable performance. In recent years, some performance degradation has been noted for a few bands and algorithm changes have been tested to further improve the calibration accuracy for the upcoming Collection 7 (C7) L1B reprocess. In this paper, we present the MODIS RSB calibration improvements that will be included in C7. Major improvements include: applying polarization correction to the desert data before using it to generate RVS for Terra bands 8, 9, 3, and 10; using ocean scene data and an interband calibration approach to correct for long-term drift of Terra bands 11 and 12; applying an updated crosstalk correction to Terra SWIR bands over the entire mission; and using data from deep convective clouds in Terra SWIR band calibration, including the addition of time-dependent RVS for bands 5 and 26. All other minor calibration changes are also covered. Overall, the reflectance differences at nadir between C6.1 and C7 are within a few percent, though the differences increase in some cases at large scan angles. The Terra visible (3, 8-12) and SWIR bands (5-7, 26) have the most significant improvements. For all other Terra bands and all Aqua bands, the C7-C6.1 differences are mostly within 1%.

The Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instruments are on-board the Aqua and Terra spacecraft, launched in 2002 and 1999, respectively. Since beginning operation, they have continued to collect valuable remote sensing data of the Earth in 36 spectral bands ranging in wavelengths from 0.41 to 14.5 μm. The Level 1B (L1B) algorithm produces calibrated top of the atmosphere (TOA) radiances for each Earth-view (EV) pixel and calibrated TOA reflectances for the reflective solar bands using geo-located, uncalibrated instrument data and calibration look up tables (LUTs) produced regularly by the MODIS Characterization Support Team (MCST). The L1B algorithm also calculates an uncertainty value for each EV pixel. The calibrated radiance and reflectance products are used to generate higher-level science products. A separate L1B code version is maintained for both MODIS instruments so that sensor specific issues can be handled individually. The current L1B algorithm version produces the Collection 6.1 (C6.1) products and was released in 2017. An overview of the C6.1 algorithm is provided together with improvements made since its release. Also discussed briefly are the planned improvements in the Collection 7 L1B algorithm.

Aqua MODIS has successfully operated for more than 18 years since its launch in May 2002 and has generated numerous science products in support of studies of the Earth’s system and its changes via a set of geophysical and environmental parameters. On-orbit calibration and characterization activities have played a vital role in maintaining the quality of MODIS data products. In addition to data collected from sensor on-board calibrators (OBC), near-monthly lunar observations and select earth view targets have been used to monitor and characterize on-orbit changes in sensor responses and to derive and update the calibration look-up tables. In this paper, we provide an overview of Aqua MODIS on-orbit operations, calibration activities and approaches, and algorithm improvements and also illustrate the sensor on-orbit performance using examples derived from various calibration sources and targets. We will focus on issues identified from instrument operations and calibrations, such as solar diffuser degradation, electronic crosstalk, variations in the cold focal plane temperatures, and changes in response versus scan-angle. Also discussed in this paper are remaining challenges and future improvements.

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board the Terra and Aqua platforms is a multi-spectral, whiskbroom scanning radiometer with 36 spectral bands covering wavelengths from 0:4 - 14:2 μm. Among these bands, the 20 reflective solar bands (RSB, 0:4 - 2:1 μm) use an on-board solar difuser (SD) and SD stability monitor (SDSM) to track the detector gain changes on orbit. In addition to this, lunar and Earth-view (EV) observations are used in order to characterize the scan-mirror response versus scan angle (RVS), which improves the Earth-view retrieval over the full width of each scan. For the short-wave infrared bands (SWIR, 1:2 - 2:1 μm), the prelaunch RVS has been used for both Aqua and Terra MODIS throughout each mission. While these bands are not expected to have a significant change in the RVS on-orbit, issues such as electronic crosstalk and an out-of-band optical leak have prevented the use of the Moon for deriving the on-orbit RVS for validation. However, recent improvements to the MODIS lunar calibration for the SWIR bands allow us to mitigate the electronic crosstalk impact and derive the RVS for the SWIR bands. In this work, we will assess the impact of this newly derived RVS on the EV data compared to MODIS Collection 6.1. By comparing to EV data obtained from pseudo-invariant calibration sites at different angles-of-incidence on the scan mirror, we can assess the effectiveness of the newly derived RVS from the Moon. We find that while the change in the RVS on-orbit for the SWIR bands is relatively small, applying a correction to the RVS based on the Moon and SD data can provide an improvement for some bands.

The NOAA-20 (N20) satellite, previously the Joint Polar Satellite System-1 satellite, was launched on November 18, 2017. One of the five major scientific instruments aboard the satellite is the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS). VIIRS scans the Earth’s surface in 22 spectral bands, 14 of which are the reflective solar bands (RSBs) with band center wavelengths from 0.412 to 2.25 μm. VIIRS regularly performs on-orbit radiometric calibration of its RSBs, primarily through the observations of the onboard solar diffuser (SD). The on-orbit change of the SD’s bidirectional reflectance distribution function, known as the H-factor, is determined by the onboard SD stability monitor (SDSM). Since the Hfactor exhibits angular dependence, obtaining the H-factor along the SD to the telescope direction is a challenge for the NOAA-20 VIIRS. Recently, Collection 2.0 of the NASA Land Science Investigator-led Processing Systems (SIPS) products were released. As a part of this reprocessing effort, we made two major improvements in the N20 VIIRS RSB radiometric calibration. One is the improved SD and SDSM attenuation screen transmittance functions, obtained by using calibration data collected during both the yaw maneuver and a small portion of regular orbits, resulting in a higher quality H-factor for the SDSM view. Another is the use of the H-factor for the telescope view, derived from the H-factor for the SDSM view, by using the results for the SNPP VIIRS. In June 2019, we delivered a set of mission-long N20 VIIRS Collection 2.0 RSB radiometric calibration look-up-tables. These tables have been employed by the NASA Land SIPS group to reprocess the entire time series of the NOAA-20 VIIRS products. In this paper, we discuss the Collection 2.0 NOAA-20 VIIRS RSB calibration algorithms and results.

On-orbit characterization of the response versus scan-angle (RVS) is one of the most challenging aspects of the reflective solar band (RSB) calibration for the MODIS instruments onboard the Terra and Aqua spacecraft. The degradation of the solar diffuser, together with the lack of onboard calibrators (OBCs) to cover additional scan angles, other than the one for the lunar observations, has resulted in the use of Earth view responses from the pseudo-invariant desert sites to track the on-orbit RVS changes. This approach has been implemented in Collection 6 (C6) and C6.1 for bands 1-4, 8 and 9 of both instruments and also band 10 of Terra MODIS. As the missions continue to operate over a decade beyond their designed life and the instrument optics continue to degrade, it is expected that the OBC based RVS currently applied to other bands, specifically the high-gain ocean bands, will be inadequate to maintain the long-term calibration stability. An interband calibration approach is formulated and implemented in this paper. The proposed approach relies on the use of a spectrally matching stable reference band to evaluate the long-term calibration stability of the high-gain ocean bands that typically saturate while viewing the selected calibration deserts. Results from this approach indicate a noticeable drift for Terra MODIS bands 11 and 12 whereas the Aqua bands continue to show excellent temporal stability. These results are consistent with the corrections derived by the NASA Ocean Biology Processing Group (OBPG) and are expected to have minimum impacts on the downstream science products.

Since its launch in December 1999, Terra Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) has successfully operated for more than 20 years, with its observations generating a broad range of science data products that have greatly enabled the remote sensing community and users worldwide in their studies of many key geophysical parameters of the Earth’s systems. MODIS collects data in 36 spectral bands, covering wavelengths from 0.41 to 14.4 μm, which are calibrated by a set of onboard calibrators (OBCs). Also contributing to the sensor’s mission-long on-orbit calibration and characterization are near-monthly scheduled lunar observations and multiple time series of the sensor’s responses over select ground targets at a variety of scan angles. To a large extent, the quality of MODIS data products relies strongly on the dedicated efforts to operate and calibrate the instrument, to derive and update calibration parameters, and to develop and implement new calibration strategies and algorithms in response to on-orbit changes of the sensor’s characteristics and its OBC functions. We provide an overview of the Terra MODIS on-orbit operation and calibration activities over the last 20 years, including changes made to extend and preserve the instrument and OBC functions and their operation strategies. It also illustrates the sensor’s on-orbit performance with results derived from its OBC, lunar observations, and select ground targets and discusses major changes in sensor characteristics and corrections applied to the L1B algorithms as well as calibration lookup table updates. To date, the Terra MODIS instrument and its OBCs continue to operate and function normally. Except for those identified prelaunch, most spectral bands and detectors continue to meet their specified calibration requirements. Also discussed in our paper are lessons learned from Terra MODIS operation and calibration, as well as future efforts to further extend and maintain the quality of its long-term data records.

The Moon has played a vital role in the radiometric stability monitoring of NASAs Earth Observing System sensors, such as MODIS on the Terra and Aqua spacecrafts. The lunar calibration methodologies developed for the two MODIS instruments were later extended to apply to the VIIRS instrument on the Suomi-NPP spacecraft. The follow-on VIIRS instrument on the NOAA-20 (N20) spacecraft (previously JPSS-1) has been successfully operating since its launch in November 2017. Fifteen VIIRS spectral bands are in the reflective solar spectral region, covering wavelengths from 0.4 to 2.3 μm. Similar to the previous MODIS and VIIRS instruments, the N20 VIIRS views the Moon via a spacecraft roll maneuver on a near-monthly basis at a confined phase angle range (-51.5° to -50.5°) to facilitate radiometric stability monitoring with reduced uncertainties. In this paper, we briefly present the lunar calibration methodology and also report the derived instrument gain parameters from the regularly scheduled lunar calibrations. The USGS Robotic Lunar Observatory (ROLO) model is used to provide the predicted lunar irradiance for each lunar measurement to account for the variation in the observation geometry. The spatial characterization algorithms using the Moon, previously developed for MODIS and SNPP VIIRS, have also been extended to N20 VIIRS to track its on-orbit band-to-band registration (BBR).

The MODIS instruments on the Terra and Aqua spacecraft are cross-track scanning radiometers that view the Earth scene, a space view port, and the on-board calibrators using a two-sided scan mirror. The reflectivity of the scan mirror varies with the angle of the incident light, and changes in this response versus scan angle (RVS) need to be tracked on orbit in order to maintain accurate calibration. In this paper, we review various methods of RVS calibration of the reflective solar bands using pseudo-invariant desert targets and discuss potential advantages and disadvantages for use in future calibration.

The Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), launched in 1999 on Terra and 2002 on Aqua spacecraft respectively, is a scanning radiometer that covers a wavelength range from 0.4 μm to 14.4 μm and scans the Earth over an angular range from -55° to +55°. After a few years in the Terra mission, it became extremely challenging to characterize the changes in the sensor gain and response versus scan angle (RVS) at short wavelengths due to significant degradation and increased polarization sensitivity. To better characterize the system-level degradation, the MODIS Characterization Support Team (MCST) developed an enhanced approach in Collection-6 (C6) L1B algorithm by supplementing the on-board calibration data with the Earth-scene response trends at various scan angles obtained from the pseudo-invariant desert sites. However, the trends at short wavelengths experienced significant impact due to the increased polarization sensitivity, especially at the end of scan. In this study, a polarization correction algorithm developed by MCST is applied to the Terra MODIS RSB response trends obtained from the desert sites. The trends after polarization correction are used to derive the gain and RVS based on the existing MODIS C6 calibration algorithm. Impact of the polarization correction is examined for gain, RVS and their fitting uncertainties over the entire mission. The results of this study provide useful information on how to further improve accuracy and stability of the calibrated L1B product.

Observations in the Terra MODIS PVLWIR bands 27 – 30 are known to be influenced by electronic crosstalk from those bands as senders and into those same bands as receivers. The magnitude of this crosstalk affecting L1B radiances has been steadily increasing throughout the mission lifetime, and has resulted in several detectors within these bands to be unusable for making L2 and L3 science products. In recent years, the crosstalk contamination has been recognized as compromising the climate quality status of several MODIS L2 and L3 science products that depend on the PVLWIR bands. In response, the MODIS Characterization Support Team (MCST) has undertaken an effort to generate a crosstalk correction algorithm in the operational L1B radiance algorithm. The correction algorithm has been tested and established and crosstalk corrected L1B radiances have been tested in several Terra MODIS L2 science product algorithms, including MOD35 (Cloud Mask), MOD06 (Cloud Fraction, Cloud Particle Phase, Cloud Top Properties), and MOD07 (Water Vapor Profiles). Comparisons of Terra MODIS to Aqua MODIS and Terra MODIS to MetOp-A IASI show that long-term trends in Collection 6 L1B radiances and the associated L2 and L3 science products are greatly improved by the crosstalk correction. The crosstalk correction is slated for implementation into Collect 6.1 of MODIS processing.

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instruments have successfully operated for more than 17 and 15 years, respectively, on-board the NASA’s Earth Observing System (EOS) Terra and Aqua spacecraft. MODIS level 1B (L1B) data products include top of the atmosphere (TOA) reflectance factors for the reflective solar bands (RSB) and radiances for both the RSB and the thermal emissive bands (TEB), and their associated uncertainty indices (UI) at a pixel-by-pixel level. This paper provides a brief review of MODIS L1B calibration algorithms, including improvements made in recent years. It presents an update of sensor calibration uncertainty assessments with a focus on several new contributors resulting from changes in sensor characteristics and on-orbit calibration approaches and the impact due to these changes on the L1B data quality. Also discussed in this paper are potential changes that could be made to continue improving the quality of MODIS L1B uncertainty product.

The MODIS instruments aboard the Terra and Aqua spacecraft have 20 reflective solar bands (RSB) with wavelengths spanning 412 nm to 2130 nm. The primary on-board calibration source for the RSB is a sunlit solar diffuser (SD), with its degradation tracked by a SD stability monitor (SDSM). The SDSM measurements show that the decrease in SD reflectance over time has a strong wavelength dependence, with longer wavelengths showing less degradation. The SDSM has 9 detectors to track the SD degradation at wavelengths from 412 nm to 936 nm, but is not designed to track the degradation at short-wave infrared (SWIR) wavelengths. In recent years, the SDSM has measured non-negligible degradation in the SD reflectance at 936 nm for both Terra (>;2%) and Aqua (>0.5%) MODIS. In addition, comparison of SD calibration results to earth view targets suggests that smaller but non-negligible SD degradation also exists at the SWIR band wavelengths. In this paper, we review the current status of the MODIS SD degradation as measured by the SDSM. We present efforts to extend the SD degradation measurements to the SWIR band wavelengths (1240 nm to 2130 nm) by fitting a wavelength-dependent model to the SDSM results from the visible and NIR wavelength detectors. The predicted degradation results are used to correct the MODIS SWIR band degradation, and comparisons are made with trends from pseudo-invariant earth targets. Results are presented for both Terra and Aqua MODIS.

MODerate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) has 36 bands. Among them, 16 thermal emissive bands covering a wavelength range from 3.8 to 14.4 μm. After 16 years on-orbit operation, the electronic crosstalk of a few Terra MODIS thermal emissive bands develop substantial issues which cause biases in the EV brightness temperature measurements and surface feature contamination. The crosstalk effects on band 27 with center wavelength at 6.7 μm and band 29 at 8.5 μm increased significantly in recent years, affecting downstream products such as water vapor and cloud mask. The crosstalk issue can be observed from nearly monthly scheduled lunar measurements, from which the crosstalk coefficients can be derived. Most of MODIS thermal bands are saturated at moon surface temperatures and the development of an alternative approach is very helpful for verification. In this work, a physical model was developed to assess the crosstalk impact on calibration as well as in Earth view brightness temperature retrieval. This model was applied to Terra MODIS band 29 empirically for correction of Earth brightness temperature measurements. In the model development, the detector nonlinear response is considered. The impacts of the electronic crosstalk are assessed in two steps. The first step consists of determining the impact on calibration using the on-board blackbody (BB). Due to the detector nonlinear response and large background signal, both linear and nonlinear coefficients are affected by the crosstalk from sending bands. The crosstalk impact on calibration coefficients was calculated. The second step is to calculate the effects on the Earth view brightness temperature retrieval. The effects include those from affected calibration coefficients and the contamination of Earth view measurements. This model links the measurement bias with crosstalk coefficients, detector nonlinearity, and the ratio of Earth measurements between the sending and receiving bands. The correction of the electronic crosstalk can be implemented empirically from the processed bias at different brightness temperature. The implementation can be done through two approaches. As routine calibration assessment for thermal infrared bands, the trending over select Earth scenes is processed for all the detectors in a band and the band averaged bias is derived for certain time. In this case, the correction of an affected band can be made using the regression of the model with band averaged bias and then corrections of detector differences are applied. The second approach requires the trending for individual detectors and the bias for each detector is used for regression with the model. A test using the first approach was made for Terra MODIS band 29 with the biases derived from long-term trending of sea surface temperature and Dome-C surface temperature.

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) is one of the key sensors among the suite of remote sensing instruments on board the Earth Observing System Terra and Aqua spacecrafts. For each MODIS spectral band, the sensor degradation has been measured using a set of on-board calibrators. MODIS also uses lunar observations from nearly monthly spacecraft maneuvers, which bring the Moon into view through the space-view port, helping to characterize the scan mirror degradation at a different angles of incidence. Throughout the Terra mission, contamination of the long-wave infrared photovoltaic band (LWIR PV, bands 27-30) signals has been observed in the form of electronic crosstalk, where signal from each of the detectors among the LWIR PV bands can leak to the other detectors, producing a false signal contribution. This contamination has had a noticeable effect on the MODIS science products since 2010 for band 27, and since 2012 for bands 28 and 29. Images of the Moon have been used effectively for determining the contaminating bands, and have also been used to derive correction coefficients for the crosstalk contamination. In this paper, we introduce an updated technique for characterizing the crosstalk contamination among the LWIR PV bands using data from lunar calibration events. This approach takes into account both the in-band and out-of-band contribution to the signal contamination for each detector in bands 27-30, which is not considered in previous works. The crosstalk coefficients can be derived for each lunar calibration event, providing the time dependence of the crosstalk contamination. Application of these coefficients to Earth-view image data results in a significant reduction in image contamination and a correction of the scene radiance for bands 27- 30. Also, this correction shows a significant improvement to certain threshold tests in the MODIS Level-2 Cloud Mask. In this paper, we will detail the methodology used to identify and correct the crosstalk contamination for the LWIR PV bands in Terra MODIS. The derived time-dependent crosstalk coefficients will also be discussed. Finally, the impact of the correction on the downstream data products will be analyzed.

MODIS is a key instrument of NASA's Earth Observing System. It has successfully operated for 16+ years on the Terra satellite and 14+ years on the Aqua satellite, respectively. MODIS has 36 spectral bands at three different nadir spatial resolutions, 250m (bands 1-2), 500m (bands 3-7), and 1km (bands 8-36). MODIS subframe measurement is designed for bands 1-7 to match their spatial resolution in the scan direction to that of the track direction. Within each 1 km frame, the MODIS 250 m resolution bands sample four subframes and the 500 m resolution bands sample two subframes. The detector gains are calibrated at a subframe level. Due to calibration differences between subframes, noticeable subframe striping is observed in the Level 1B (L1B) products, which exhibit a predominant radiance-level dependence. This paper presents results of subframe differences from various onboard and earth-view data sources (e.g. solar diffuser, electronic calibration, spectro-radiometric calibration assembly, Earth view, etc.). A subframe bias correction algorithm is proposed to minimize the subframe striping in MODIS L1B image. The algorithm has been tested using sample L1B images and the vertical striping at lower radiance value is mitigated after applying the corrections. The subframe bias correction approach will be considered for implementation in future versions of the calibration algorithm.

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), a major instrument within NASA’s Earth Observation System missions, has operated for over 16 and 14 years onboard the Terra and Aqua satellites, respectively. Its reflective solar bands (RSB) covering a spectral range from 0.4 to 2.1 μm are primarily calibrated using the on-board solar diffuser (SD), with its on-orbit degradation monitored using the Solar Diffuser Stability Monitor. RSB calibrations are supplemented by near-monthly lunar measurements acquired from the instrument’s space-view port. Nine bands (bands 8-16) in the visible to near infrared spectral range from 0.412 to 0.866 μm are primarily used for ocean color observations. During a recent reprocessing of ocean color products, performed by the NASA’s Ocean Biology Processing Group, detector-to-detector differences of up to 1.5% were observed in bands 13-16 of Terra MODIS. This paper provides an overview of the current approach to characterize the MODIS detector-to-detector differences. An alternative methodology was developed to mitigate the observed impacts for bands 13-16. The results indicated an improvement in the detector residuals and in turn are expected to improve the MODIS ocean color products. This paper also discusses the limitations, subsequent enhancements, and the improvements planned for future MODIS calibration collections.

The spectral reflectance measured by the MODIS reflective solar bands (RSB) is used for retrieving many atmospheric science products. The accuracy of these products depends on the accuracy of the calibration of the RSB. To this end, the RSB of the MODIS instruments are primarily calibrated on-orbit using regular solar diffuser (SD) observations. For lambda 0.94 microns, the MODIS Characterization Support Team (MCST) developed, in MODIS Collection 6 (C6), a time-dependent correction using observations from pseudo-invariant earth-scene targets. This correction has been implemented in C6 for the Terra MODIS 1.24 micron band over the entire mission, and for the 1.375 micron band in the forward processing. As the instruments continue to operate beyond their design lifetime of six years, a similar correction is planned for other short-wave infrared (SWIR) bands as well. MODIS SWIR bands are used in deriving atmosphere products, including aerosol optical thickness, atmospheric total column water vapor, cloud fraction and cloud optical depth. The SD degradation correction in Terra bands 5 and 26 impact the spectral radiance and therefore the retrieval of these atmosphere products. Here, we describe the corrections to Bands 5 (1.24 microns) and 26 (1.375 microns), and produce three sets (B5, B26 correction on/on, on/off, and off/off) of Terra-MODIS Level 1B (calibrated radiance product) data. By comparing products derived from these corrected and uncorrected Terra MODIS Level 1B (L1B) calibrations, dozens of L3 atmosphere products are surveyed for changes caused by the corrections, and representative results are presented. Aerosol and water vapor products show only small local changes, while some cloud products can change locally by > 10%, which is a large change.

Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) is the keystone instrument for NASAs EOS Terra and Aqua missions, designed to extend and improve heritage sensor measurements and data records of the land, oceans and atmosphere. The reflective solar bands (RSB) of MODIS covering wavelengths from 0.41 micrometers to 2.2 micrometers, are calibrated on-orbit using a solar diffuser (SD), with its on-orbit bi-directional reflectance factor (BRF) changes tracked using a solar diffuser stability monitor (SDSM). MODIS is a scanning radiometer using a two-sided paddle-wheel mirror to collect earth view (EV) data over a range of (+/-)55 deg. off instrument nadir. In addition to the solar calibration provided by the SD and SDSM system, lunar observations at nearly constant phase angles are regularly scheduled to monitor the RSB calibration stability. For both Terra and Aqua MODIS, the SD and lunar observations are used together to track the on-orbit changes of RSB response versus scan angle (RVS) as the SD and SV port are viewed at different angles of incidence (AOI) on the scan mirror. The MODIS Level 1B (L1B) Collection 6 (C6) algorithm incorporated several enhancements over its predecessor Collection 5 (C5) algorithm. A notable improvement was the use of the earth-view (EV) response trends from pseudo-invariant desert targets to characterize the on-orbit RVS for select RSB (Terra bands 1-4, 8, 9 and Aqua bands 8, 9) and the time, AOI, and wavelength-dependent uncertainty. The MODIS Characterization Support Team (MCST) has been maintaining and enhancing the C6 algorithm since its first update in November, 2011 for Aqua MODIS, and February, 2012 for Terra MODIS. Several calibration improvements have been incorporated that include extending the EV-based RVS approach to other RSB, additional correction for SD degradation at SWIR wavelengths, and alternative approaches for on-orbit RVS characterization. In addition to the on-orbit performance of the MODIS RSB, this paper also discusses in detail the recent calibration improvements implemented in the MODIS L1B C6.

The Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) is currently flying on NASA's Earth Observing System (EOS) Terra and Aqua satellites, launched in 1999 and 2002, respectively. MODIS reflective solar bands (RSB) in the visible wavelength range are known to be sensitive to polarized light based on prelaunch polarization sensitivity tests. The polarization impact is dependent on scan angle and mirror side. After about five years of on-orbit operation, it is found that a few shortest-wavelength bands of Terra MODIS show increased polarization sensitivity. In this study, we examine the impact of polarization on measured top-of-atmosphere (TOA) reflectances over pseudo-invariant desert sites. The standard polarization correction equation is used in combination with simulated at-sensor radiances by the Second Simulation of a Satellite Signal in the Solar Spectrum (6SV), Vector Radiative Transfer Code. Key Mueller matrix elements describing the polarization and gain correction of these bands are derived over the mission lifetime. Results indicate that the polarization sensitivity increases with scan mirror’s angle of incidence (AOI) and relatively large impact is observed from mirror side 2. At the end of 2009, it reaches a peak at approximately 30% at 0.41 μm and stabilizes since then.

Both MODIS and VIIRS instruments use a solar diffuser (SD) for their reflective solar bands (RSB) on-orbit calibration. On-orbit changes in SD bi-directional reflectance factor (BRF) are tracked by a solar diffuser stability monitor (SDSM) using its alternate measurements of the sunlight reflected off the SD panel and direct sunlight through a fixed attenuation screen. The SDSM calibration data are collected by a number of filtered detectors, covering wavelengths from 0.41 to 0.94 micrometers. In this paper we describe briefly the Terra and Aqua MODIS and S-NPP VIIRS SDSM on-orbit operation and calibration activities and strategies, provide an overall assessment of their SDSM on-orbit performance, including wavelength-dependent changes in the SDSM detector responses and changes in their SD BRF, and discuss remaining challenging issues and their potential impact on RSB calibration quality. Due to different launch dates, operating configurations, and calibration frequencies, the Terra and Aqua MODIS and S-NPP VIIRS SD have experienced different amount of SD degradation. However, in general the shorter the wavelength, the larger is the SD on-orbit degradation. On the other hand, the larger changes in SDSM detector responses are observed at longer wavelengths in the near infrared (NIR).

The MODerate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) is one of the primary instruments in the fleet of NASA’s Earth Observing Systems (EOS) in space. Terra MODIS has completed 15 years of operation far exceeding its design lifetime of 6 years. The MODIS Level 1B (L1B) processing is the first in the process chain for deriving various higher level science products. These products are used mainly in understanding the geophysical changes occurring in the Earth’s land, ocean, and atmosphere. The L1B code is designed to carefully calibrate the responses of all the detectors of the 36 spectral bands of MODIS and provide accurate L1B radiances (also reflectances in the case of Reflective Solar Bands). To fulfill this purpose, Look Up Tables (LUTs), that contain calibration coefficients derived from both on-board calibrators and Earth-view characterized responses, are used in the L1B processing. In this paper, we present the implementation mechanism of the electronic crosstalk correction in the Photo Voltaic (PV) Long Wave InfraRed (LWIR) bands (Bands 27-30). The crosstalk correction involves two vital components. First, a crosstalk correction modular is implemented in the L1B code to correct the on-board Blackbody and Earth-View (EV) digital number (dn) responses using a linear correction model. Second, the correction coefficients, derived from the EV observations, are supplied in the form of LUTs. Further, the LUTs contain time stamps reflecting to the change in the coefficients assessed using the Noise Equivalent difference Temperature (NEdT) trending. With the algorithms applied in the MODIS L1B processing it is demonstrated that these corrections indeed restore the radiometric balance for each of the affected bands and substantially reduce the striping noise in the processed images.

The 36 MODIS spectral bands, with wavelengths ranging from 0.41 μm to 14.2 μm, are distributed on four focal plane assemblies: visible (VIS), near-infrared (NIR), short- and mid-wave infrared (SMIR), and long-wave infrared (LWIR). The MODIS reflective solar bands (RSB) are calibrated onorbit using a solar diffuser (SD), with its reflectance degradation monitored using a solar diffuser stability monitor (SDSM). The Terra MODIS SD degradation at 0.936 μm, as measured by the SDSM, is 2.4% after 14 years on-orbit. The Aqua MODIS SD degradation at 0.936 μm is 0.6% after 12 years on-orbit. The SWIR bands with spectral wavelengths centered at 1.24 μm (band 5), 1.37 μm (band 26), 1.64 μm (band 6), and 2.13 μm (band 7), are beyond the SDSM wavelength coverage (0.412 μm to 0.936 μm). Consequently, the gain of the SWIR bands is computed without factoring in the possible degradation of the SD. A technique to monitor the long-term stability of the MODIS SWIR bands is developed using pseudo-invariant desert targets. Results indicate a long-term drift of up to 1.5% of band 5 of Terra MODIS. The long-term stability of other Terra MODIS SWIR bands is seen to be within 0.5%. Similar results for Aqua MODIS indicate no observable drift, with changes within 0.5%. An implementation strategy to account for this correction in the MODIS Level 1 B (L1B) is also discussed.

Since launch in December 1999, Terra MODIS has successfully operated for nearly 15 years, making continuous observations. Data products derived from MODIS observations have significantly contributed to a wide range of studies of key geophysical parameters of the earth’s eco-system of land, ocean, and atmosphere, and their changes over time. The quality of MODIS data products relies on the dedicated effort to monitor and sustain instrument health and operation, to calibrate and update sensor parameters and properties, and to improve calibration algorithms. MODIS observations are made in 36 spectral bands, covering wavelengths from visible to long-wave infrared. The reflective solar bands (1-19 and 26) are primarily calibrated by a solar diffuser (SD) panel and regularly scheduled lunar observations. The thermal emissive bands (20-25 and 27- 36) calibration is referenced to an on-board blackbody (BB) source. On-orbit changes in the sensor spectral and spatial characteristics are monitored by a spectroradiometric calibration assembly (SRCA). This paper provides an overview of Terra MODIS on-orbit operation and calibration activities and implementation strategies. It presents and summarizes sensor on-orbit performance using nearly 15 years of data from its telemetry, on-board calibrators, and lunar observations. Also discussed in this paper are changes in sensor characteristics, corrections applied to maintain MODIS level 1B (L1B) data quality, and efforts for future improvements.

MODIS is currently onboard NASA’s EOS Terra and Aqua spacecraft launched on December 18, 1999 and May 4, 2002, respectively. MODIS reflective solar bands (RSB) are calibrated on-orbit using solar illumination reflected from its onboard solar diffuser (SD). The solar diffuser stability monitor (SDSM) is designed to track the on-orbit degradation of the SD via alternate observations of the Sun and SD. A wavelength-dependent degradation pattern is observed for both MODIS instruments with a faster degradation rate observed at shorter wavelengths. The UV exposure of the SD to sunlight and the scattered light (the sunlight reflected from top of the atmosphere) through the instrument nadir port contributes to its reflectance degradation. The scatter off the diffuser onto the scan mirror is in the forward direction, whereas the scatter off the diffuser onto the SDSM scan mirror is in the backward direction. Since the outgoing angles (viewed by MODIS detectors) are the same as the scheduled SD calibration, the gain derived from scattering light facilitates monitoring the dependence on SD degradation on incident angles. A methodology is formulated to track the MODIS SD degradation using scattered light through the nadir-port and comparing the result with the SD degradation as measured by the SDSM. In this study, multiple orbits from a given day of each month are processed to obtain a SD response to the nadir-port illumination. Results show that a reasonable agreement is observed between the SD degradation estimates derived from both view-angles.

The MODerate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) has 20 reflective solar bands (RSB), which are calibrated using a solar diffuser (SD) and near-monthly scheduled lunar observations via a space view (SV) port. The sensor responses observed at two different angles of incidence (AOI) from the SD and lunar measurements are used to track the on-orbit RSB gain changes as well as the response versus scan-angle (RVS) changes. The MODIS RSB have experienced wavelength dependent degradation since launch with the larger degradation observed at the shorter wavelengths. In addition to the SD and lunar observations, the MODIS Characterization Support Team (MCST) regularly monitors the response trending at multiple AOI over selected desert sites. In Collection 6 (C6), a new algorithm using the EV measurements from pseudoinvariant desert sites was developed to better characterize the MODIS scan-angle dependence and it led to a significant improvement in the long-term calibration consistency of the MODIS Level 1B (L1B) products. This approach is formulated for all RSB, and its application was recently extended to Terra band 10, leading to a significant improvement in the ocean-color products. This paper discusses the current status and performance of the on-orbit RVS characterization as applied in C6. Also, the various challenges and future improvement strategies associated with trending the EV response for the high-gain ocean bands are discussed.

Bands 13 (667 nm) and 14 (678 nm) of the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) onboard the Terra and Aqua satellites are built with a time delay and integration (TDI) circuit and a high-low dual-gain setting intended for the monitoring of the ocean environment. An important on-orbit performance issue for the high-gain output of Terra Band 14 and Aqua Band 13 and 14 is that these three bands saturate during standard on-orbit calibrations using the onboard solar diffuser (SD). Consequently, their calibration procedure requires a derivation different from other reflective solar bands (RSB). A high-low scaling-ratio approach is employed for these bands to obtain the high-gain coefficients via the low-gain output 13L and 14L through a calculated constant ratio derived from other sources. Currently, earth view (EV) scenes over the North Atlantic Ocean are used as the primary sources. As it also has been observed that the response versus scan-angle (RVS) exhibits noticeable changes with time for RSB, a time-dependent RVS calibration algorithm has been implemented based on the SD and lunar calibration results. This paper reviews the electronic design and operation of Band 13 and 14, discusses the SD calibration and the saturation issue of the high-gain output, and the time-dependent RVS algorithms. Long-term performance of the calibration coefficient and RVS are presented. The long-term trend shows that the gain-change for Terra MODIS Band 13 and 14, for both high- and lowgain bands, is significant at 6% and 23%, but is more modest for Aqua MODIS Band 13 and 14 at 6% and 2%. The gain ratios 13H/13L and 14H/14L are very stable at the level of 0.01% for both MODIS instruments. The long-term gain difference due to RVS effect is up to 3% for Terra MODIS and about 2% and below for Aqua MODIS.

MODIS has 20 reflective solar bands (RSB) with a total of 330 individual detectors. Currently, there are two nearly identical MODIS instruments operating in space: one on the Terra spacecraft launched in December 1999 and another on the Aqua spacecraft launched in May 2002. MODIS reflective solar bands (RSB) are calibrated on-orbit by a system that consists of a solar diffuser (SD) and a solar diffuser stability monitor (SDSM). Near-monthly lunar observations are also used to track the sensor response versus scan angle (RVS) change on-orbit. On-orbit observations show that the changes in the detector response are wavelength, scan-angle and mirror side dependent. This paper provides a comprehensive assessment of the detector-to-detector calibration differences in the MODIS VIS/NISR spectral bands using the on-board calibrators and earth-view (EV) level 1B (L1B) data products. Different EV targets are analyzed to accommodate the high-gain ocean bands which tend to saturate over land surfaces. The results from this study highlight the necessity of the constant monitoring of the detector-level gain and its change as a function of scan-angle, as implemented in the MODIS Collection 6 (C6) products.

Since launch, Terra and Aqua MODIS have performed more than 12 and 10 years of scientific measurements of the Earth’s surface. MODIS has 36 spectral bands, among which 20 are Reflective Solar Bands (RSB), covering a spectral range from 0.41 μm to 2.1 μm. MODIS was developed with stringent requirements for calibration and uncertainty and is equipped with a set of on-board calibrators (OBC) that facilitate a constant monitoring and update of its on-orbit calibration coefficients. The RSB are calibrated on-orbit using a Solar Diffuser (SD) and a Solar Diffuser Stability Monitor (SDSM), with help from the lunar observations via a Space View (SV) port and an onboard Spectroradiometric Calibration Assembly (SRCA). The algorithms to accurately characterize the sensor’s gain change and the on-orbit change in the response versus scan-angle (RVS) have been applied to improve the quality of the Earth-view measurements. Various improvements to the calibration algorithms have been incorporated since launch and the following paper will discuss the calibration algorithms and enhancements developed for MODIS Collection 6 (C6) processing. In addition, to supplement the measurements from the on-board calibrators, pseudo-invariant desert targets are also used to track the on-orbit response change for selective RSB. Discussions of the on-orbit calibration uncertainty and the Level 1B (L1B) Uncertainty index (UI) product are also included. A comprehensive assessment of the impact on the L1B product in comparison to Collection 5 (C5) is also discussed. Significant improvements are observed in the case of VIS bands wherein the long-term bias observed in C5 products is eliminated to provide a more accurate radiometric product.

MODIS has 20 reflective solar bands (RSB) in the visible (VIS), near infrared (NIR), and short-wave infrared (SWIR) spectral regions. In addition to instrument on-board calibrators (OBC), lunar observations have been used by both Terra and Aqua MODIS to track their reflective solar bands (RSB) on-orbit calibration stability. On a near monthly basis, lunar observations are scheduled and implemented for each instrument at nearly the same lunar phase angles. A time series of normalized detector responses to the Moon is used to monitor its on-orbit calibration stability. The normalization is applied to correct the differences of lunar viewing geometries and the Sun-Moon-Sensor distances among different lunar observations. Initially, the lunar calibration stability monitoring was only applied to MODIS bands (1-4 and 8-12) that do not saturate while viewing the Moon. As the mission continued, we extended the lunar calibration stability monitoring to other RSB bands (bands 13-16) that contain saturated pixels. For these bands, the calibration stability is monitored by referencing their non-saturated pixels to the matched pixels in a non-saturation band. In this paper, we describe this relative approach and apply it to MODIS regularly scheduled lunar observations. We present lunar trending results for both Terra and Aqua MODIS over their entire missions. Also discussed in the paper are the advantages and limitations of this approach and its potential applications to other earth-observing sensors.

Launched in May 2002, the NASA EOS Aqua MODIS has successfully operated for more than 8 years. Observations from Aqua MODIS and its predecessor, Terra MODIS, have generated an unprecedented amount of data products and made significant contributions to studies of changes in the Earth's system of land, oceans, and atmosphere. MODIS collects data in 36 spectral bands: 20 reflective solar bands (RSB) and 16 thermal emissive bands (TEB). It has a set of on-board calibrators (OBC), providing sensor on-orbit radiometric, spectral, and spatial calibration and characterization. This paper briefly summarizes Aqua MODIS on-orbit operation and calibration activities and illustrates instrument onorbit performance from launch to present. Discussions are focused on OBC functions and changes in detector radiometric gains, spectral responses, and spatial registrations. With ongoing calibration effort, Aqua MODIS will continue serving the science community with high quality data products.

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) has been operating on both the Terra and Aqua spacecraft for over 10.5 and 8 years, respectively. Over 40 science products are generated routinely from MODIS Earth images and used extensively by the global science community for a wide variety of land, ocean, and atmosphere applications. Over the mission lifetime, several versions of the MODIS data set have been in use as the calibration and data processing algorithms evolved. Currently Version 5 MODIS data is the baseline Level-1B calibrated science product. The MODIS Characterization Support Team (MCST), with input from the MODIS Science Team, developed and delivered a number of improvements and enhancements to the calibration algorithms, Level-1B processing code and Look-up Tables for the Version 6 Level-1B MODIS data. Version 6 implements a number of changes in the calibration methodology for both the Reflective Solar Bands (RSB) and Thermal Emissive Bands (TEB). This paper describes the improvements introduced in Collection 6 to the RSB and TEB calibration and detector Quality Assurance (QA) handling.

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instruments currently operate onboard the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA's) Terra and Aqua spacecraft, launched on December 18, 1999 and May 4, 2002, respectively. MODIS has 36 spectral bands, among which 20 are reflective solar bands (RSBs) covering a spectral range from 0.412 to 2.13 μm. The RSBs are calibrated on orbit using a solar diffuser (SD) and an SD stability monitor and with additional measurements from lunar observations via a space view (SV) port. Selected pseudo-invariant desert sites are also used to track the RSB on-orbit gain change, particularly for short-wavelength bands. MODIS views the Earth surface, SV, and the onboard calibrators using a two-sided scan mirror. The response versus scan angle (RVS) of the scan mirror was characterized prior to launch, and its changes are tracked using observations made at different angles of incidence from onboard SD, lunar, and Earth view (EV) measurements. These observations show that the optical properties of the scan mirror have experienced large wavelength-dependent degradation in both the visible and near infrared spectral regions. Algorithms have been developed to track the on-orbit RVS change using the calibrators and the selected desert sites. These algorithms have been applied to both Terra and Aqua MODIS Level 1B (L1B) to improve the EV data accuracy since L1B Collection 4, refined in Collection 5, and further improved in the latest Collection 6 (C6). In C6, two approaches have been used to derive the time-dependent RVS for MODIS RSB. The first approach relies on data collected from sensor onboard calibrators and mirror side ratios from EV observations. The second approach uses onboard calibrators and EV response trending from selected desert sites. This approach is mainly used for the bands with much larger changes in their time-dependent RVS, such as the Terra MODIS bands 1-4, 8, and 9 and the Aqua MODIS bands 8 and 9. In this paper, the algorithms of these approaches are described, their performance is demonstrated, and their impact on L1B products is discussed. In general, the shorter wavelength bands have experienced a larger on-orbit RVS change, which, in general, are mirror side and detector dependent. The on-orbit RVS change due to the degradation of band 8 can be as large as 35% for Terra MODIS and 20% for Aqua MODIS. Vital to maintaining the accuracy of the MODIS L1B products is an accurate characterization of the on-orbit RVS change. The derived time-independent RVS, implemented in C6, makes an important improvement to the quality of the MODIS L1B products.
