10. Efficient generation of orange light by frequency-doubling of a quantum-dot laser radiation in a PPKTP waveguide

Abstract

Orange light with maximum conversion efficiency exceeding 10% and CW output power of 12.04 mW, 10.45 mW and 6.24 mW has been generated at 606, 608, and 611 nm, respectively, from a frequency-doubled InAs/GaAs quantum-dot external-cavity diode laser by use of a periodically-poled KTP waveguides with different cross-sectional areas. The wider waveguide with the cross-sectional area of 4×4 μm demonstrated better results in comparison with the narrower waveguides (3×5 μm and 2×6 μm) which corresponded to lower coupling efficiency. Additional tuning of second harmonic light (between 606 and 614 nm) with similar conversion efficiency was possible by changing the crystal temperature.

Abstract

We demonstrate a compact all-room-temperature picosecond laser source broadly tunable in the visible spectral region between 600 nm and 627 nm. The tunable radiation is obtained by frequency-doubling of a tunable quantum-dot external-cavity mode-locked laser in a periodically-poled KTP multimode waveguide. In this case, utilization of a significant difference in the effective refractive indices of the high- and low-order modes enables to match the period of poling in a very broad wavelength range. The maximum achieved second harmonic output peak power is 3.25 mW at 613 nm for 71.43 mW of launched pump peak power at 1226 nm, resulting in conversion efficiency of 4.55%.

Abstract

A detailed quantitative numerical analysis of partially coherent quasi-CW fiber laser is performed on the example of high-Q cavity Raman fiber laser. The key role of precise spectral performances of fiber Bragg gratings forming the laser cavity is clarified. It is shown that cross phase modulation between the pump and Stokes waves does not affect the generation. Amplitudes of different longitudinal modes strongly fluctuate obeying the Gaussian distribution. As intensity statistics is noticeably non-exponential, longitudinal modes should be correlated.

Abstract

We have demonstrated Raman frequency conversion and supercontinuum light generation in a hollow core Kagomé fiber filled with air at atmospheric pressure, and developed a numerical model able to explain the results with good accuracy. A solid-state disk laser was used to launch short pulses (~6ps) at 1030nm into an in-house fabricated hollow core Kagomé fiber with negative core curvature and both ends were open to the atmosphere. The fiber had a 150 THz wide transmission window and a record low loss of ~12 dB/km at the pump wavelength. By gradually increasing the pulse energy up to 250 µJ, we observed the onset of different Kerr and Raman based optical nonlinear processes, resulting in a supercontinuum spanning from 850 to 1600 nm at maximum input power. In order to study the pulse propagation dynamics of the experiment, we used a generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation (GNLSE). Our simulations showed that the use of a conventional damping oscillator model for the time-dependent response of the rotational Raman component of air was not accurate enough at such high intensities and large pulse widths. Therefore, we adopted a semiquantum Raman model for air, which included the full rotational and vibrational response, and their temperature-induced broadening. With this, our GNLSE results matched well the experimental data, which allowed us to clearly identify the nonlinear phenomena involved in the process. Aside from the technological interest in the high spectral density of the supercontinuum demonstrated, the validated numerical model can provide a valuable optimization tool for gas based nonlinear processes in air-filled fibers.

Abstract

We demonstrate a frequency doubled dual-gain quantum dot semiconductor disk laser operating at 590 nm. The reflective gain element, grown by molecular beam epitaxy, has active region composed of 39 layers of InGaAs Stranski- Krastanov quantum dots. The gain mirrors produce individually 3 W and 4 W of output power while the laser with both elements in a single cavity reveals 6 W at 1180 nm with beam quality factor of M 2
