Abstract

This work presents for the first time a study of a fibre laser mode-locked due to a carbon-nanotube-based saturable absorber whose parameters could be controlled by a joined action of optical radiation and electric field. Combination of different types of control (optical and electrical) allowed variation of dynamics of the saturable absorber parameters and greater choice of pulsed generation regimes.We demonstrated the possibility of live switching of laser generation between various pulsed regimes through combined electro-optical action on the polymer-free carbon nanotube film.

Abstract

High efficiency, Ge-on-Si single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) detectors operating in the short-wave infrared region (1310 nm - 1550 nm) at near room temperature have the potential to be used for numerous emerging applications, including quantum communications, quantum imaging and eye-safe LIDAR applications. In this work, planar geometry Ge-on-Si SPAD designs demonstrate a significant decrease in the dark count rate compared to previous generations of Ge-on-Si detectors. 100 μm diameter microfabricated SPADs demonstrate record low NEPs of 2.2×10-16 WHz-1/2, and single-photon detection efficiencies of 18% for 1310 nm at 78 K. The devices demonstrate single-photon detection at temperatures up to 175 K.

Abstract

In this paper we describe an approach to reduce the propagation loss in titanium dioxide strip waveguides. We achieved to reduce losses down to 2.4 dB/cm in 1 μm-wide waveguide at λ=1550 nm.

Abstract

Gallium lanthanum oxysulfide (GLSO) is a promising host material for observing strong upconversion emission from trivalent rare-earth ions such as erbium (Er3+). Its attractive properties include high rare-earth solubility due to the lanthanum content of the glass former, a high refractive index (n = 2.2 at 550nm) for high radiative efficiency, and a low maximum phonon energy of approximately 425cm-1. Photonic crystals meanwhile can provide controlled light extraction, and may be capable of suppressing unwanted IR emission from lower lying metastable states. Here, we describe the fabrication of photonic crystals in annealed films of Er3+-doped GLSO deposited by RF sputtering. The most intense visible upconversion emission is observed in films annealed at 550°C, close to the bulk glass transition temperature. Hexagonal lattice photonic crystals are subsequently milled into the films using a focused ion beam (FIB). The milling parameters are optimized to produce the most vertical sidewall profile.

Abstract

The features of the Furnace Chemical Vapor Deposition (FCVD) method of manufacturing preforms for special optical fibers are considered. It is shown that misalignment of substrate silica tube and furnace hole axes has a negative effect on the quality of fabricated preforms, leading to angular and radial asymmetry of the refractive index profile. Ways of getting rid of this and other disadvantages of the FCVD method are described. Some advantages of the FCVD method over the MCVD method are shown. It was demonstrated that the FCVD method, despite some drawbacks, allows to manufacture high-quality fiber preforms with good symmetry of the refractive index profile, and thus it is promising for fabrication of dispersion, dispersion varying and active fibers.

Abstract

We propose here a liquid level sensor using a long period fiber grating (LPFG) in which direct liquid level measurement is carried out by utilising an LPFG, 100mm in length and a periodicity of 1mm. The LPFG was exposed to liquids with varying levels and the wavelength shift of a selected loss band of the transmission spectra was monitored using a broadband light source and an optical spectrum analyzer. The mechanism of this LPFG sensor is based on the fact that the effective Refractive Index (RI) of a cladding mode is directly dependant on the RI of the surrounding medium, be it air, or in this case water and petrol. As the surrounding RI changes, so does the phase matching condition of the LPFG. The result for the level change of the liquid with a specific RI is both a shift in wavelength and a change in the attenuation level of the selected loss band. For the selected loss band, continuous wavelength shifts of 9.5 nm and 25 nm for 100 mm of water and petrol level change have been observed respectively, with sub-millimetre accuracy.

48. Super-high temperature sensitivity of long-period gratings in B/Ge co-doped fiber

Abstract

Long period fiber grating (LPFG) can be used as active gain controlling device in EDFA. However, LPFGs fabricated in the standard telecom fiber only have a typical temperature sensitivity of 3-10nm/100°C, which may not be sufficient for implementing tuneable filters capable of wide tuning range and high tuning efficiency. In this paper, we report a theoretical and experimental investigation of thermal properties of LPFGs fabricated in B/Ge co-doped optical fiber. We have found that the temperature sensitivity of the LPFGs in the B/Ge fiber is considerably increased compared with those produced in the standard fiber. The LPFGs written in the B/Ge fiber have achieved, on average, one order of magnitude higher sensitivity than that of the LPFGs produced in the standard telecom fiber. We have also identified that the thermal response of LPFG is strongly dependent on the order of the coupled resonant cladding mode. The maximum sensitivity of 1.75nm/°C achieved by the 10th cladding mode of the 240μm LPFG is nearly 24 times that of the minimum value (0.075nm/C) exhibited by the 30th mode of the 34μm LPFG. Such devices may lead to high-efficiency and low-cost thermal/electrical tunable loss filters or sensors with extremely high temperature resolution.

Abstract

This paper explains and demonstrates the unique properties of micron-size silicon-on-insulator (SOI) waveguides. It gives an overview of the silicon photonics research at VTT, as well as latest R&D highlights. The benefits of high mode confinement in rib and strip waveguides are described, reaching from low losses and small footprint to polarization independent operation and ultra-wide wavelength range from 1.2 to over 4 μm. Most of the results are from photonic integrated circuits (PICs) on 3 μm SOI, while a 25 Gbps link with a transceiver on 12 μm SOI is also reported. Wavelength multiplexing and filtering is demonstrated with some breakthrough performance in both echelle gratings and arrayed waveguide gratings. Lowest losses are below 1 dB and lowest cross-talk is below -35 dB. Progress towards monolithically integrated, broadband isolators is described, involving polarization splitters, reciprocal polarization rotators and nonreciprocal Faraday rotation in 3 μm SOI waveguide spirals. Quick update is presented about switches, modulators and Ge photodiodes up to 15 GHz bandwidth. Hybrid integration of lasers, modulators and photodiodes is also reported. The added value of trimmed SOI wafers and cavity-SOI wafers in Si photonics processing is addressed. Latest results also include up-reflecting mirrors with
