Dimerization and solvent effect have been investigated in a number of NH- and NOH-2- indolinones by means of FT-IR. Interactions between solute molecules decrease as the hydrogen bonding character of the solvent increases. The presence of solute-solvent complexes as well as the additional contribution from lattice interactions have been examined.

Molecular complexes of substituted indoles with (pi) *-acceptors have been investigated by means of Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy. The formation constants of the complexes, evaluated on characteristic vibrational modes of the acceptors, are in substantial agreement with those determined by optical spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance.© (1992) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering. Liquid phase FT-IR investigation on π-π Electron-Donor-Acceptor (EDA) complexes between arenes and organic acceptors leads to values of formation constants that are in good agreement with the ones from other techniques (UV-Vis and NMR). In addition solid state FT-IR and UV-Vis determinations on the complexes are also reported and discussed.
