This article is based on the political philosophy of education, understood as the study of the conversion of the democratic project into educational practices. The figure of Dewey is undoubtedly one of the most inspiring for such an approach. In this text, we ask ourselves whether what he presented in his time as the possibility of a new individualism can help us to think about education and training in democracy in the 21st century. We begin (1) with three readings that allow us to understand how Dewey envisages the articulation of three strong concepts: democracy, individualism and liberalism, always against the backdrop of strong educational and formative concerns. We then discuss the opportunities for contemporary re-examination of Dewey’s proposals in this context (2). A concluding section points to some lessons for a practical and applied political philosophy of education in the contemporary French context (3).

The purpose of this article is to invest the axis 1 of the present file, in other words to ask the question of the philosophical model of education of the citizen to which it seems most relevant to refer today for the school questions. Anxious to try to assert the relevance of a democratic, individualistic and liberal conception of citizenship as well as of the contemporary school - as a counterpoint to the neo-republican conceptions of these same issues - we propose to do this through a critical dialogue, from the point of view of the political philosophy of education, with the work of Dominique Schnapper. We begin by identifying, exposing and articulating the main lines of force of his model of citizenship and its implications in terms of civic education and the political philosophy of the school (1), then confronting it with two liberal-inspired critiques of school republicanism (2), before finally arguing the interest of a neo-Tocquevillian and minimalist perspective of civic education in a society of individuals (3).

In this article we aim to present the relation of hyper-modern societies to victims, considered here as excluded from sociality, as an intelligibility criterion concerning the functioning of those societies. We investigate and discuss the theory according to which victims would be, first of all, the losers in societies structured around the market model (part 1). Then, to go beyond the economist explanation of hyper-modernity stakes, we study the consequences of the widespread attribution of the autonomous individual status in the frame of hyper-modernity (part 2). Finally, we focus on the conditions enabling the effective achievement of this attribution, and we question the hypothesis of the benevolent authority as a way to reach the end of individual and collective autonomy (part 3).
