Introduction: Breast cancer is the mostcommon cancer among women in the world and in our country. Despite earlydiagnosis and improved treatment possibilities, breast cancer is difficult toaccept and a major source of anxiety. It brings various psychosocial problemsto the agenda. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the effect of depression andanxiety in the patients admitted to the outpatient clinic with the complaint ofa mass in the breast and to determine the effect of mass on the mental healthof women.Methods: This study is an analyticalcase-control study. All of the participants were female (n=200). Patientsfilled the questionnaire containing the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), theBeck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) and the sociodemographic data form.Results: There was nostatistically significant difference between the case and control groups interms of the marital status, living with someone, monthly income level, placeof residence, occupation, and education level (p gt;0.05). There was a statistically significantdifference between case and control groups in terms of the mean BDI score(19.6±1.05, 8.92±0.62, respectively, p lt;0.001). There was also astatistically significant difference between the two groups in terms of themean BAI score (20.34±1.23, 7.88±0.71, respectively, p lt;0.001). Conclusion: In our study, the incidenceof depression and severe anxiety was significantly higher in the women admittedto the outpatient clinic with the complaint of a breast mass than in thehealthy women.

Introduction:The Google search engineis a widely used resource for accessing health-related patient education texts.Therefore accessible information in the texts should be accurate, up-to-dateand appropriate to the general public health literacy level. In this research,we aimed to analyze the readability of patient education texts prepared forbreast cancer presented on internet and to evaluate the content of texts.Methods:A total of 200 web sitesat Google search engine were evaluated using the terms “breast cancer and breast mass”. The averagereadability level was analyzed using Ateşman and Bezirci-Yilmaz readability formulas.The texts were also evaluated in terms of the risk factors identified in thedevelopment of breast cancer, the presence of examination and screening methodsthat could be used in early diagnosis.Results:A total 64 internet sitesthat are in compliance with the research criteria were evaluated. The overallmean reading level of the texts was found moderate, using the Ateşman formulaand college level according to Bezirci. 18 Web sites had both the risk factorsidentified in the development of breast cancer and the methods of screenings.Conclusions:Atotal 64 internet sites that are in compliance with the research criteria wereevaluated. Introduction: Idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSNHL) isan otologic emergency that can lead to loss of function in one of the mostimportant human senses. Recently, hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) has gainedpopularity with pharmacotherapy in ISSNHL. This study aimed to determinechanges induced in thiol/disulfide homeostasis (TDH, a new biomarker ofsystemic oxidative stress) by pharmacotherapy and HBOT in patients with ISSNHL.Methods: This prospectivestudy analyzed the albumin, total thiol, native thiol, and disulfide levels anddisulfide-native thiol, disulfide-total thiol, and native thiol-total thiolratios before and after HBOT with standardizing pharmacotherapy using a newcolorimetric method in patientswith ISSNHL.Results: 41 patients withISSNHL including 14 (34.1%) women and 27 (65.9%) men participated in the study.The mean age of the patients was 48.02 ± 13.10 years. Of them, 24 (58.5%) hadhearing loss in the right ear and 17 (41.5%) had hearing loss in the left ear.There was a statistically significant decrease in the albumin (p lt;0.001),total thiol (p lt;0.001), native thiol (p lt;0.001), and disulfide (p lt;0.001)levels after treatment compared to baseline. There was no statisticallysignificant difference in the disulfide-native thiol (p=0.148), disulfide-totalthiol (p=0.172), and native thiol-total thiol (p=0.169) ratios after treatmentcompared to baseline.Conclusion: Consequently,this study demonstrated that the thiol-disulphide balance tended to shifttowards the oxidative side after HBOT and pharmacotherapy compared to baseline in patients with ISSNHL andthat patients with high oxidation level after treatment had better treatmentresponse.

Introduction: This study aimed to evaluate the changesboth in the systemic inflammation and in the mucociliary clearance followingsmoking cessation, and their associations with smoking characteristics.Methods: A total of 30 cases admitted to Konya Training andResearch Hospital, University of Health Sciences, Department of SmokingCessation were recruited, and 27 of them completed the study. Tumor necrosisfactor alpha (TNF-α), interleukin (IL) -4, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10 and saccharintransit time (STT) was measuredat the beginning and 2 months after smokingcessation.Results: We found in this study that STT decreased significantlyin 2 months after cessation (p lt;0.001). In our study, we found that serumTNF-α (p=0.035) and IL-8 (p=0.002) levels were decreased significantly at 2months after quitting when compared with the basal levels. In our study, serumIL-6 (p=0.132) and IL-10 (p=0.657) levels did not change significantly in the2nd month of quitting, when compared to basal levels.Conclusion: In this study, two months after smoking cessation,nasal mucosal clearance and systemic inflammatory response especially plasmaTNF- α and IL-8 levels were improved. We think that further studies with largersample size and longer follow-up will provide more detailed data about theimprovements in systemic inflammation.
