Phenolic compounds present in our diet play an important role in colon cancer chemoprevention. Previous results demonstrated that peanut testa extract inhibited both histone deacetylase (HDAC) activity and the growth of colon cancer cells. In this study, four identified phenolic compounds in peanut testae (resveratrol, p-coumaric acid, ferulic acid, and sinapinic acid) were investigated for their HDAC inhibitory and anticancer activities against colon cancer cell lines. In vitro study revealed that resveratrol exhibited the greatest HDAC inhibitory activity. Molecular docking studies demonstrated that all four compounds could bind both HDAC1 and HDAC2. Resveratrol exhibited the most effective antiproliferative activity against both human colon adenocarcinoma (HT29) and human colorectal carcinoma (HCT116) cells. Apoptosis induction by ferulic acid and resveratrol appeared to be associated with p53 activation in HCT116 cells. However, resveratrol, p-coumaric acid, ferulic acid, and sinapinic acid induced apoptosis of HT29 cells in a p53-independent manner. Low-concentration treatments of p-coumaric and ferulic acids resulted in cell cycle arrest of HCT116 cells. In contrast, high-concentration treatments of p-coumaric and ferulic acids showed cell death activation as evidenced by increased sub-G1 fractions. The induction of p21 by p-coumaric acid and resveratrol correlated well with the decreased CDK4 levels and cell cycle arrest. Resveratrol, p-coumaric acid, ferulic acid, and sinapinic acid caused activation of pERK1/2 in HCT116 cells, whereas ferulic and sinapinic acids caused downregulation of pERK1/2 in HT29 cells. The objective of this study was to investigate the responses of peanut genotypes to midseason drought, regarding in particular nutrient uptakes and their correlations with biomass production and pod yield. The experiment was conducted during the dry seasons of 2011/12 and 2012/13. Five peanut genotypes with different levels of drought tolerance and 2 water regimes (well-watered and midseason drought) were laid out in a split-plot design with 4 replications. Midseason drought was imitated by stopping irrigation at 30 days after planting (DAP) and then rewatering at 60 DAP. The data were recorded for contents of N, P, K, Ca, and Mg in plant tissues, biomass production, yield components, and pod yield at harvest. The results showed that midseason drought significantly reduced the uptake of all nutrient elements. Peanut genotypes with higher levels of drought tolerance took up more nutrients than those with lower levels. The uptake of all nutrient elements contributed to biomass production, pod yield, and the number of pods per plant. Jerusalem artichoke could be an alternative feedstock for bioenergy during times when there are shortages of other raw materials for the ethanol industry. However, insufficient water under rainfed conditions is a major cause of Jerusalem artichoke losses. Genetic variation for drought tolerance is an essential prerequisite for the development of Jerusalem artichoke cultivars with improved drought tolerance. The objectives of this study were to determine the effects of drought stress on tuber dry weight and biomass and to investigate the genotypic variability in Jerusalem artichoke germplasm. The line-source sprinkler technique was used to compare moisture responses of a range of 40 Jerusalem artichoke genotypes grown using 3 water levels. Experiments were conducted on a Yasothon soil series in Northeast Thailand during 2010/11 and 2011/12 and included extended dry periods. Drought reduced tuber dry weight and biomass, and the reductions in tuber dry weight and biomass were greater under severe drought than moderate drought conditions. Over both seasons, CN 52867, HEL 53, HEL 231, HEL 335, JA 76, HEL 65, and JA 102 x JA 89 (8) had consistently high tuber dry weight (1.3 to 4.5 t ha-1) and HEL 53, HEL 61, HEL 231, HEL 335, JA 76, JA 15, JA 89, HEL 65, HEL 256, and JA 102 x JA 89 (8) had consistently high biomass (2.0 to 6.8 t ha-1).
