The indications, techniques, and expectations for radionuclide diagnostic studies on canine and feline thyroid glands are presented. In addition, the considerations surrounding radioiodine or external beam radiotherapy for benign and malignant thyroid disease are reviewed. The intent of this article is to familiarize primary care veterinarians with the utility of and outcome of the ionizing radiation-based diagnostic and therapeutic techniques for assessing and treating canine and feline thyroid disease.

The role of survey radiography, contrast radiography, and ultrasonography in the assessment of urocystolithiasis has been primarily one of detection. Information about the radiographic characteristics of uroliths (size, shape, radiopacity, surface characteristics, number detected) for characterization and diagnosis of urocystolithiasis is emerging; however, there are no studies on the accuracy or sensitivity of these techniques. In this article, the intent is to update knowledge about available imaging techniques used in the detection and characterization of urocystoliths based on recent studies designed to evaluate their accuracy in prediction of different urocystoliths mineral content.

Survey radiography, double contrast cystography, and antegrade urethrocystography are valuable imaging tools available to the clinician for evaluation of cats with lower urinary tract disease. However, to be cost effective during patient evaluation, diagnostic radiographic procedures should be used only when needed. An algorithm is presented that describes when radiographic imaging techniques may be most cost effective in providing useful information during the clinical workup of cats with lower urinary tract disease.

Survey radiographic, contrast radiographic, and ultrasonographic techniques for evaluation of the male canine reproductive organs are reviewed. The applications and limitations of these technique as they apply to reproductive diseases involving the prostate gland and testicles are illustrated.

The techniques of and general interpretive principles of gray-scale, two-dimensional abdominal ultrasonography in small animals are described. Using case examples, commonly encountered imaging artifacts and categories of disease are integrated with a description of what was obtained by radiography. Tissue echogenicity as a basis for general assessment of organ abnormalities as well as the expectations (interpretive and prognostic) one should have of abdominal ultrasonography are presented.

The technique of and general appearance of suprapubic gray-scale prostatic ultrasonography in the dog are described. Using case examples, the various spontaneous diseases of the canine prostate are described and compared to the defined normal appearance of the prostate. An integrated approach to imaging the canine prostate gland is advocated and includes radiographic techniques, specifically distension retrograde urethrocystography. A clinically relevant classification scheme for use with microbiologic, cytologic, and imaging techniques is proposed.

Radiopaque uroliths and nonradiopaque (water density) uroliths are filling defects encountered in the urinary tracts of dogs and cats. Other free luminal and attached soft tissue density filling defects encountered during uroradiographic special procedures include blood clots, air bubbles, hematomas, granulomas, abscesses, inflammatory and neoplastic polyps. Nonradiopaque uroliths cannot be identified on survey radiographs from other soft tissue dense structures. Gray scale ultrasonography can be used to differentiate nonradiopaque (water dense) uroliths from other soft tissue attached or free luminal filling defects of the excretory pathway. The differential radiographic features of filling defects encountered during cystography and urethrography are described and illustrated.
