This article explores the complex relationship between civil society, social inequality, and nationhood through examining the motivations of elite members of Welsh civil society as they volunteer to serve on the boards of a wide range of Welsh charities. We interviewed nearly 60 trustees and patrons, all of whom enjoyed successful and influential careers in business, politics, or public service. Their narratives reveal diverse vocabularies of motive, but prominent within these is the desire to 'give something back', and not just to society in general but to Wales in particular. While their desire to 'give back' reflects an awareness of their own privileged position, their commitment to Wales can be seen as a response to the country's historic and current dominance by England, as well as a legacy of non-conformism and community. The article concludes by discussing the implications of these narratives for understanding the specificities of 'geographies of responsibility', civil society, and nationhood. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Changes to the structure of English education because of decentralisation policy, particularly since 2010, have resulted in the creation of large groupings of schools – multi-academy trusts, organisations with multi-level governance structures, set out in schemes of delegation. Although the government has demanded absolute clarity on the role and remit of each part of the structure and the relationship and reporting between them, recent research suggests that there is little clarity or consistency in the role and function of board structures, with members often confused about their roles. This study draws on data from a funded project to examine: What level of consistency there is in multi-academy trust schemes of delegation, and what evidence is there that schemes of delegation align with sensemaking models of board members? The article concludes with a discussion on what the findings imply for use of schemes of delegation as useful tools for board member sensemaking in multi-academy trusts; revealing that although they can be useful tools for sensemaking, their usage varies a great deal between boards and board members. This study reviews and synthesizes empirical research literature focusing on the relationship between boards of directors and organizational effectiveness of U.S. hospitals. The study examines literature published in scholarly journals during the period of 1991-2017. Fifty-one empirical articles were identified that met the study's inclusion criteria. A framework from the corporate governance and nonprofit governance literature is used to classify the articles according to level of analysis (individual actors, governing bodies, organizations, and networks, alliances and multiorganizational initiatives) and focus of research (formal structure and behavioral dynamics-including informal structures and processes). The article presents a case study on the multi-method assessment of non-profit and voluntary sector governance in Cornwall, England to determine the level at which the board was functioning. It states that 65 chairpersons of organisations completed a Board Self-Assessment Questionnaire (BSAQ). It mentions that the board members who reported good awareness of the personalisation agenda preparedness was accounted for by the BSAQ scores of the organisations.

Much of what we understand about school governance is generally under-researched, and there has been almost no recent research undertaken into the governing of schools in the non-maintained, private or independent sectors that are financed by the payment of fees. These schools broadly follow a model of governance that is similar to that of the maintained sector in their constitution, with some notable differences around how governors are appointed and their roles are conceived. This article aims to analyse the nature of independent school governance generally, focusing on a case study of a small private school located in the Midlands, England. The context of this school is a fairly unique one, with governance being held accountable to non-executive trustees who have overall control of the school operation, but who devolve that responsibility to the governing body. This article starts with a review of the current governance model in private schools, then looking in more depth at the characteristics of governance in this independent school. An analysis of the findings is then explored, with some thoughts and conclusions around opportunities for further exploration into private school governance. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Although the authority for hiring a community college president resides with the board of trustees, few studies have directly explored trustees perceptions of the desired qualifications for presidents. Hospice trustees are volunteers who are vital to the governance and management of independent, charitable hospices, yet little is known about their roles and concerns. This paper presents some findings from a qualitative study which explored the views and perspectives of hospice trustees in the UK. Twenty hospice trustees took part in semi-structured telephone interviews, which were analysed using an iterative thematic approach. Nine themes emerged from the analysis, and were grouped into two major categories. One theme, 'becoming a trustee', is presented in this paper to illustrate trustees' concerns about the challenges they face in adapting to change. The pace of change currently facing hospices in the UK is an issue of particular concern to trustees, presenting ongoing challenges for this group of volunteers.
