Abstract

Abstract This paper reports the effect of silica fume (SF), nanosilica (NS) and superplasticiser (SP) addition on the rheological behaviour of Portland cement pastes with different amounts of SF (0-10%), NS (1%) and SP (0-0·4%) and water to binder (W/B) ratio of 0·4. A rheometer with concentric cylinders geometry was used and the maximum shear rate of 100 s-1 was applied. SP decreased the hysteresis area, while SF and NS increased it. Samples with NS showed high slopes in descending curves, while samples with SF and high dosages of SP showed lower values. In both cases, the Bingham model resulted in negative values for the yield stress, so that the Herschel-Bulkley model was used instead. The spread values variation on flow table did not follow a linear regression model. For this investigation, commercially available SF and NS were used. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This paper reports the effects of nanosilica (nS), microsilica (silica fume, SF) and their simultaneous use (nS+SF) on “both” the microstructure of cement pastes and the mechanical properties of mortars. After water curing at 21°C for 7, 28 and 90 days, samples with water/binder w/b ratio of 0·35 were characterised by thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and compressive strength test. Single or mixed mineral additions did not generate “any” distinct hydration phases compared to the reference material without additives. A decrease in the calcium hydroxide contents in later curing ages indicated a pozzolanic effect of nS and SF. The chemical action promoted by nS together with the physical effect due to the small particle size distribution given by SF result in higher compressive strength and better hardened properties, suggesting the synergistic action of nS+SF compared with single additions. In this paper, mortars and cement paste with additions of nanosilica (nS), silica fume (SF) and nS+SF were studied applying a factorial design methodology. Mortars with water/total solids ratios below 16% were characterised in the fresh state by rheological and flow table tests. Thus, all mixtures show suitable workability in both equipments. Compressive strength, setting time, air content, fresh apparent density, hydration temperature and X-ray diffraction were carried out. The optimum amount of nS and SF for each W/B ratio between 0·35 and 0·47 was determined by compressive strength at 28 days. For W/B<0·43, SF shows the best results, while for W/B>0·43, nS reaches better performance. In general, nS addition affects the properties more significantly than SF. Accordingly, the characterisation of the plastic behaviour is essential to adjust the fluxing properties of the material. In the current work, three industrially prepared ceramic pastes (porcelain, earthenware and terracotta) were tested, using stress–deformation curves obtained by compression of cylindrical probe tests. To achieve good extrusion performance, the design and operating conditions also need to be considered in detail. The ram extrusion of adjusted pastes was followed by the Benbow–Bridgwater model. Differences in the flow behaviour were related with stress–deformation curves and with the surface quality of the extrudate (by using the static friction coefficient). Common phases in such cements (C<subscript>2</subscript>S, C<subscript>3</subscript>S, C<subscript>3</subscript>A and C<subscript>4</subscript>AF) were prepared with high purity grade chemical reagents to be used as reference, and characterised. Subsequently, clinkers with selected compositions were prepared by combining several industrial wastes and byproducts: Al rich anodising sludge, sludge from the filtration/clarification of potable water, sludge generated in marble sawing processes and foundry sand. The clinkers were found to contain the reference cementitious phases, the two characterisation techniques used (NMR and XRD) being complementary in the information provided. The general similarity of the major phases formed in waste based and reagent based formulations clearly demonstrates the potential of the use of wastes in cement formulations of industrial interest.
