Sleep is essential for maintenance and restoration of health, yet studies exploring this in hospitalized children are scarce. In a qualitative study, we assessed the perceived quality of sleep, factors affecting sleep, and the role of health care professionals in the sleep environment for hospitalized children aged 1 to 12 years. Data were obtained from 11 semi-structured, audio-recorded, and verbatim-transcribed interviews with parents, and analyzed using a systematic thematic analysis. The interviews were coded based on iterative assessment of transcripts. Subsequently, categories and interpretative main themes were identified. Four themes emerged: (1) being informed, keeping informed; (2) coordination of care; (3) parents as main advocates for their child's sleep; and (4) environmental disturbers. Parents reported differences in their child's sleep quality during hospital compared with home. Sleep is substantially affected during hospitalization, prompting the need for interventions to improve the quality of sleep of children. Parents provided valuable suggestions for improvements. Based on an ethnographic study in a German prison, this article explores the question of what meaning incarcerated men attach to sport in light of the loss of freedom and autonomy which according to Sykes are particular 'pains of imprisonment'. The material shows the following: (1) Incarceration is perceived by imprisoned men as a life under duress and proves to be a stark contrast to life outside prison due to the limited freedom of movement, action and decision making. (2) Sport is a means for incarcerated men to bring back memories of being free and to mentally escape into the time before imprisonment. (3) Sport is one of the few opportunities for imprisoned men to spend time in fresh air, which results in a physically–sensually experienced liberation. (4) Participation in sports enables the incarcerated to temporarily regain freedom of action and decision making. Overall, the findings indicate that sport can best be understood as a help in coping with incarceration. It is concluded from the findings that imprisoned men attach their own meanings to sport, largely detached from the function of sport ascribed by the institution (such as rehabilitation and health promotion). Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the digital and gamified WellWe intervention on parental self-efficacy for healthy behaviours and mindfulness in parenting at the comprehensive health checks of 4-year-old children. Methods: Two-arm cluster, randomised, controlled trial with a 4-month follow-up.The data were collected from parents of 4-year-old children. Cluster randomisation was done at the municipality level. Fifteen child health clinics within 4 municipalities located in Southwest Finland were randomly allocated to either an intervention (WellWe intervention) or a control group (usual care). The outcome measures included the Parental Self-Efficacy for Healthy Behaviours (PDAP) and Mindfulness in Parenting (MIPQ) questionnaires. Data were collected at baseline, after the intervention and at the 4-month follow-up. Results: Initially a total of 110 parents (50 in the intervention and 60 in the control group) participated in the study. At the end of the study, there were 33 parents involved, with 12 in the intervention group and 21 in the control group. Parental self-efficacy and mindfulness in parenting showed no statistically significant difference between the groups or within the groups at the different time points. Conclusions: The results of the study showed no difference between the intervention and the usual care. The commitment of the subjects was lower than expected. The intervention could be improved by placing a greater focus on engaging and motivating both families and public health nurses (PHNs). Story telling is one of the most time honored methods for conveying ideas, inspiring action and offering insights into the foibles and ferment of the human condition. This editorial offers a glimpse into what is sparking the imaginations and passions of health promotion professionals by simply asking them 'what are you reading?' Those who shared the books currently sitting alongside their reading chairs were not asked to select books that were related to improving health and well-being. Still, it came as no surprise that contributors to this article uniformly described plots, characters and narratives that illuminate how life circumstances can accost health and jeopardize well-being. What's more, you will see that in fiction, non-fiction and fanciful fables alike, health promotion professionals extract inspiration from these books and find ways to apply the moral of these stories toward the improvement of our profession. Immersive global learning experiences like Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) offer students cross-cultural knowledge, awareness, and language fluency, fostering critical analysis, and problem-solving. This paper focuses on U.S. and Dutch students' perceptions of personal growth as future health education specialists regarding cultural sensitivity and competence within a COIL course. The study explores valuable skills for professionals engaging with diverse populations, contributing to the literature on faculty-led internationalization initiatives. Both the COIL research model and the cultural intelligence (CQ) framework guided the design and implementation of the COIL course. A thematic analysis of self-reflection narratives from N = 49 undergraduate students from the U.S. and the Netherlands revealed categories and themes related to cultural perspectives in health promotion, cultural sensitivity and competence, and essential skills for health education specialists. The findings demonstrate the impact of COIL on students' cultural perspectives and knowledge, their awareness of cultural norms, and the importance of diverse strategies and approaches in health promotion. The study highlights the value of COIL courses in developing cultural understanding within educational settings and provides insights for educators and students interested in engaging with diverse populations. Background: Promotional videos are an effective means of marketing products or services in this era of social media. However, little is known if such videos can be a useful tool to promote pharmacy services. Objective: To assess the impact of promotional videos on public awareness of the health services provided by New Zealand pharmacists. Methods: This experimental study used an online questionnaire and promotional videos developed by the Pharmaceutical Society of New Zealand as an intervention to assess the public's perspectives about pharmacy services before and after the intervention. The survey was sent out to 1 127 randomly selected members of the public aged 18 and above from all over New Zealand. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and thematic analysis. Results: A total of 313 participants completed the survey. The majority (95.8%) had not heard of the promotional videos before. However, 84.3% found the videos informative and nearly three-quarters (74.1%) reported a change in their perception of pharmacy services after watching the video. Similarly, 63.2% reported that they or a family member would be more likely to visit a pharmacy in the future after watching the promotional video. Less than half (40%) of the participants reported that the videos were too long and only 11.5% found them boring. Conclusion: The PSNZ videos were found to be an effective tool for educating New Zealanders on different pharmacy services and the pharmacy profession, however, there is a need to choose the advertising platform carefully so as to enhance the coverage. Background: Sleep deprivation is reported in 80% of patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) and is associated with delirium. Guidelines recommend implementing a sleep-promoting protocol in critically ill patients which may increase the quantity and quality of sleep and may decrease delirium. Our objective was to implement a pharmacist-led interdisciplinary sleep-promoting protocol and analyze its impact on delirium in ICU patients receiving mechanical ventilation (MV). Methods: The study involved pre-implementation education, protocol development, and post-implementation analysis. ICU pharmacists completed prospective patient chart reviews to reduce exposure to deliriogenic medications and assess the need for a pharmacologic sleep aid. The primary outcome was the incidence of delirium and delirium-free days. Secondary outcomes included ICU length of stay (LOS), incidence of MV, and pharmacist medication interventions. Results: Post-protocol patients (n = 185) had a higher incidence of delirium compared to pre-protocol patients (n = 237) (51.3% vs 39.0%; P =.01). Post-protocol patients had a higher average APACHE III score (P = <.001). Delirium-free days were not significantly different between groups (P =.97). Difference in ICU LOS was not significant (P =.80). More patients received MV post-protocol implementation (55.7% vs 36.1%; P <.001). Pharmacists documented a total of 113 medication interventions. Conclusion and Relevance: A pharmacist-led, ICU sleep-promoting protocol was successfully implemented but did not reduce the incidence of delirium or the administration of insomnia agents. Post-protocol patients had higher disease severity and were more likely to receive MV. Incidence of delirium was consistent with the national reported prevalence of ICU delirium. This article addresses the differences between girls and boys in the disclosure of sexual violence. The dataset combines data from the Finnish Child Victim Survey (FCVS) of 2008 (N = 13,459) and 2013 (N = 11,364), focusing on victims of sexual violence, ages 11 to 17 years, from the perspectives of disclosure and gender. Frequency and percentage analysis, cross tabulation, and a Chi-square test were used in the analysis. In the FCVS for both years, around 85% of the victims were girls. In almost two-thirds of the cases, the offender was a relative, friend, or some other known person, while in more than one-third of the cases, the offender was unknown to the victim. The second most common case was that the victim knew the offender, who was not, however, a friend. Sexual violence was found to be, in many ways, gendered. Most of the victims were girls, and most of the offenders were men. There was also a gender difference in the disclosure of experiences. Twenty-one percent of the girls and 45% of the boys reported that they had not told anyone about their experiences. Irrespective of the type of offender, the victims most often (63%) told a peer about their experiences, while 23% told parents, and only 10% told authorities. Moreover, victims reported shame and fear, distrust toward adults, and disbelief that disclosure would be helpful as reasons for not disclosing their experiences. To address this problem, raising awareness of the phenomenon, promoting an atmosphere that supports disclosing experiences of sexual violence, and improving readiness to address them are required. The need to foster resilience amongst young people with intellectual disabilities is increasingly recognised within policy. Critically, understanding of the actual means by which this aspiration might be most sensitively and effectively met is considered weak. This paper reports on an exploratory case-study of a social enterprise community café – The Usual Place - that through the promotion of employability, seeks to promote resilience amongst its young 'trainees' with intellectual disabilities. Two research questions were set: " how is 'resilience' conceptualized within the organisation " and " what features within the organisation are significant in fostering resilience"? We identify a range of significant features associated with being able to successfully foster resilience – the need for a foundational 'whole organisation'(settings) approach based on high levels of participation and choice; the negotiation of a constructive dynamic tension between 'support' and 'exposure'; and the embedding of these actions in embodied actions and day-to-day organisational activities. Background: Pregnancy provides a privileged and opportune moment to implement interventions promoting healthy lifestyle behaviors and significantly improving perinatal outcomes. The Healthy Lifestyle Behaviors Scale (HLBES) can be used to assess health promoting behaviors, such as diet, physical activity, and mental health. Purpose: This study aimed to examine the psychometric properties of the HLBES in Portuguese pregnant women. Methods: A methodological study was conducted on a convenience sample of 192 pregnant women receiving prenatal care. After cross-cultural adaptation, an exploratory factor analysis and internal consistency assessment were carried out to evaluate the psychometric properties of the scale. Data collected included the Healthy Lifestyle Beliefs Scale to assess the HLBES' criterion validity. Results: Exploratory factor analysis with Varimax rotation yielded 2 subscales that explained 45.23% of the total variance. The scale revealed an overall internal consistency of 0.78 and a good criterion validity with the Healthy Lifestyle Beliefs Scale (r = 0.65, P <.01). Conclusion: Our results suggest that the HLBES is an instrument for reporting healthy lifestyle behaviors in Portuguese pregnant women; however, further studies are recommended. Background: Wider social networks are increasingly recognized for supporting people with care needs. Health-promoting initiatives around the end of life aim to foster these social connections but currently provide little insight into how willing people are to help neighbours facing support needs. Objectives: This study describes how willing people are to help neighbours who need support practically or emotionally, whether there is a difference in willingness depending on the type of support needed and what determines this willingness. Design: We applied a cross-sectional survey design. Methods: We distributed 4400 questionnaires to a random sample of people aged >15 across four municipalities in Flanders, Belgium. These surveys included attitudinal and experiential questions related to serious illness, caregiving and dying. Respondents rated their willingness (scale of 1–5) to provide support to different neighbours in hypothetical scenarios: (1) an older person in need of assistance and (2) a caregiver of a dying partner. Results: A total of 2008 questionnaires were returned (45.6%). The average willingness to support neighbours was 3.41 (case 1) and 3.85 (case 2). Helping with groceries scored highest; cooking and keeping company scored lowest. Factors associated with higher willingness included an optimistic outlook about receiving support from others, family caregiving experience and prior volunteering around serious illness or dying. Conclusion: People are generally willing to support their neighbours who need help practically or emotionally, especially when they have prior experience with illness, death or dying and when they felt supported by different groups of people. Community-based models that build support around people with care needs could explore to what extent this willingness translates into durable community support. Background: Telephone advice lines have been recommended internationally to support around-the-clock care for people living at home with advanced illness. While they undoubtedly support care, there is little evidence about what elements are needed for success. A national picture is needed to understand, improve and standardise service delivery/care. Aim: To explore telephone advice lines for people living at home with advanced illness across the four UK nations, and to construct a practical framework to improve services. Design: A cross-national evaluation of telephone advice lines using structured qualitative interviews. A patient and public involvement workshop was conducted to refine the framework. Setting/participants: Professionals with responsibilities for how palliative care services are delivered and/or funded at a local or regional level, were purposively sampled. Results: Seventy-one interviews were conducted, covering 60 geographical areas. Five themes were identified. Availability : Ten advice line models were described. Variation led to confusion about who to call and when. Accessibility, awareness and promotion : It was assumed that patients/carers know who to call out-of-hours, but often they did not. Practicalities : Call handlers skills/expertise varied, which influenced how calls were managed. Possible responses ranged from signposting to organising home visits. Integration/continuity of care : Integration between care providers was limited by electronic medical records access/information sharing. Service structure/commissioning : Sustained funding was often an issue for charitably funded organisations. Conclusions: Our novel evidence-based practical framework could be transformative for service design/delivery, as it presents key considerations relating to the various elements of advice lines that may impact on the patient/carer experience. Objective: Despite gender-affirming laryngological services (GALS; eg, voice therapy or surgery) being available nationwide, there is a discrepancy between the number of transgender and gender diverse (TGD) people with vocal incongruence and those who pursue services. Primary care is an important setting for accessing gender-affirming care, including learning about GALS. The purpose of this study was to understand the relationship between access to primary care and utilization of GALS. Methods: An anonymous cross-sectional online survey was developed in REDCap. Between June-November 2022, 187 TGD respondents answered all questions related to this analysis. We assessed the relationship between having a primary care provider (PCP) and use of GALS via logistic regression. Results: Of the 167 individuals who reported having a PCP, 54% reported familiarity with GALS, compared to 45% of individuals without a PCP. Compared to the group without a PCP, a greater proportion of individuals with a PCP had received professional voice therapy (21% vs 5%) and voice surgery (3% vs 0%). Logistic regression models did not demonstrate a significant effect of primary care access on either familiarity with, or use of, GALS. Conclusion: Most respondents (89%) were linked to the medical community through a PCP. A greater proportion of respondents with a PCP had accessed professional voice therapy and voice surgery compared with respondents without a PCP, though this difference was not statistically significant. Increased communication between GALS providers and PCPs would raise awareness of available services and may strengthen the referral pipeline to increase access to vocal care. Novel community-wide approaches that gamify physical activity through challenges and competition have become increasingly popular in recent years. However, little is known about the factors that help or hinder their implementation. This qualitative study aimed to address this gap in the literature by systematically investigating the facilitators (organizational and experiential) and barriers to successful implementation of a community-wide intervention delivered in Gloucester, the United Kingdom. A two-phased process evaluation was conducted. Phase 1 involved the thematical analysis of open question feedback from n = 289 adults. Phase 2 included three focus groups conducted with n = 12 participants. This research showed that promoting the initiative through primary education settings was fundamental to enhancing awareness and participation. Social elements of the intervention were identified as a motivating factor for, and a consequential outcome of, participation. A lack of promotion to wider-reaching proportions of the community was perceived to be a significant barrier to implementation, potentially limiting inclusivity and participation in the activity. Numerous initiatives at the national, state, and local levels are focused on addressing the U.S. maternal health crisis. However, most efforts fail to center women's voices and personal perspectives about pregnancy experiences and complications. This article describes the Illinois Maternal Health Digital Storytelling Project conducted by the University of Illinois at Chicago, in partnership with StoryCenter, a storytelling nonprofit organization based in Berkeley, California. The project aimed to elevate voices (stories) to complement other sources of data on maternal outcomes. We relied on partners to help recruit storytellers with a self-identified perinatal-related challenge. We screened interested individuals using a trauma-informed approach and a social worker provided storytellers with support during the project. Two groups participated in this project, one in 2021 and another in 2022, culminating with 10 digital stories. Both instances were conducted virtually and included group and individual skills-based sessions where storytellers learned to create and edit their digital stories. The storytellers own their digital stories and provided consent to include them in ongoing dissemination efforts. In September 2021, a webpage was launched to house the stories, and this resource is being shared widely. Evaluation efforts of the webpage are ongoing to understand how these digital stories are being used to inform maternal health efforts. Digital stories add richness to ongoing maternal health prevention work and may serve as a powerful tool to elicit understanding among providers, practitioners, and constituents. Introduction.: Evidence-based health promotion programs (EBPs) support older adults where they live, work, pray, play, and age. COVID-19 placed a disproportionate burden on this population, especially those with chronic conditions. In-person EBPs shifted to remote delivery via video-conferencing, phone, and mail during the pandemic, creating opportunities and challenges for older adult health equity. Method.: In 2021–2022, we conducted a process evaluation of remote EBPs by purposively sampling diverse U.S. organizations and older adults (people of color, rural, and/or with disabilities). The Reach, Effectiveness, Adoption, Implementation, Maintenance (RE-AIM) + Equity framework was used to understand program reach and implementation, including FRAME to describe adaptations for remote delivery. Analyses include descriptive statistics and thematic analysis of participant and provider surveys and interviews, and joint display tables to compare learnings. Results.: Findings from 31 EBPs through 198 managers/leaders and 107 organizations suggest remote delivery increases EBP reach by improving access for older adults who are underserved. For programs requiring new software or hardware, challenges remain reaching those with limited access to—or comfort using—technology. Adaptations were to context (e.g., shorter, smaller classes with longer duration) and for equity (e.g., phone formats, autogenerated captioning); content was unchanged except where safety was concerned. Implementation is facilitated by remote delivery guidelines, distance training, and technology support; and hindered by additional time, staffing, and resources for engagement and delivery. Conclusions.: Remote EBP delivery is promising for improving equitable access to quality health promotion. At Te Kunenga ki Pūrehuroa (Massey University), Aotearoa New Zealand, we have declared our stance as a Te Tiriti o Waitangi-led institution. This necessitates the embodiment and enactment of the principles and provisions of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the embedding of Indigenous Māori knowledge, values and belief systems in curriculum design and implementation. This article outlines the beginning of our journey toward indigenizing our postgraduate public health curriculum at Te Kunenga ki Pūrehuroa. We describe the redevelopment of the Master of Public Health curriculum that embeds mātauranga Māori (Māori knowledge), te reo Māori (Māori language), tikanga Māori (Māori values and belief systems), and Māori pedagogy (culturally sustaining teaching and learning practices). Here, we focus on how curriculum redevelopment and pedagogy have enabled the utility of Māori knowledge and processes to be reflected at every level of the program and give life and relevancy to Te Tiriti o Waitangi. Te Tiriti o Waitangi guides our teaching practice and ensures that students can safely develop their confidence in Māori ways of knowing, being, and doing to effectively partner with Māori as Tangata Whenua. Background. The Mobility and Vitality Lifestyle Program (MOVE UP) is a behavioral weight-management intervention for improving mobility among community-dwelling older adults. We examined program factors that affect implementation outcomes and participant-level health outcomes. Methods. The MOVE UP program was implemented in the greater Pittsburgh area from January 2015 to June 2019 to improve lower extremity performance in community-dwelling older adults who were overweight or obese. Thirty-two sessions were delivered over 13 months. All sessions were designed to be 1-hour in length, on-site, group-based, and led by trained and supported community health workers (CHWs). Participants completed weekly Lifestyle Logs for self-monitoring of body weight, diet, and physical activity. We evaluated the MOVE UP program using the RE-AIM framework, and collected quantitative data at baseline, 5-, 9-, and 13-months. Multilevel linear regression models assessed the impacts of program factors (site, CHW, and participant characteristics) on implementation outcomes and participant-level health outcomes. Results. Twenty-two CHWs delivered MOVE UP program to 303 participants in 26 cohorts. Participants were similar to the target source population in weight but differed in some demographic characteristics. The program was effective for weight loss and lower extremity function in both intervention and maintenance periods (p s <.01), with an independent effect for Lifestyle Logs submission but not session attendance. Discussion. CHWs were able to deliver a multi-component weight loss intervention effectively in community settings. CHW and site characteristics had independent impacts on participants' adherence. Lifestyle Log submission may be a more potent measure of adherence in weight loss interventions than attendance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The Translational Science Benefit Model (TSBM) was developed to broadly capture systematic measures of health and societal benefits from scientific research, beyond traditional outcome measures. We aimed to develop a systematic process for the application of the TSBM and to then provide an example of a novel application of the TSBM to an ongoing Return-to-Learn (RTL) after youth concussion project involving partnerships with community stakeholders. Methods: We invited investigators, project advisory board, and participants of the RTL project to participate in a modified Delphi process. We first generated a list of potential translational benefits using the indicators of the TSBM as guideposts. We then prioritized the benefits on an adapted Eisenhower matrix. Results: We invited 35 concussion care or research experts to participate, yielding 20 ranked translational benefits. Six of these recommendations were ranked high priority, six were regarded as investments, and eight were ranked as either low yield or low priority. Discussion: This study found that activities such as education and training of stakeholders, development of policy and consensus statements, and innovation in dissemination, were perceived as higher priority than other activities. Our approach using a modified Delphi process and incorporating the TSBM can be replicated to generate and prioritize potential benefits to society from research studies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study examined the impact of group composition of a 6-week group-based employee Fitbit intervention on daily physical activity steps. Group composition comprised heterogenous and homogeneous groupings based on variations in baseline high, medium, and low steppers. The intervention included weekly step leaderboard information, motivational and informative messages, and the ability to participate in group step challenges. Repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) examined differences in change of steps across time, step-level groups (low, medium, and high), and group composition (low/high, similar, and mixed), and replicated with a subgroup of participants who participated in group step challenges. While group and step level did not emerge as significant interactions in the overall sample, when focused within the group step challenge subsample, relationships among time, the group composition, and participant step-level categories emerged. Overall, the greatest increases in steps occurred at the mid-point time period, among lower steppers, and within the low/high comparison group. This study provides evidence of the importance of group composition in physical activity interventions as well as the fidelity of intervention design in facilitating group comparisons. The use of Critical Race Theory, Photovoice, and Community-Based Participatory Research has helped uncover the root causes of issues such as systemic racism in the fields of public health and health promotion. Often, we see studies using traditional research methods to investigate potential causal factors of disparities in minoritized communities report only quantitative data. While these data are imperative for understanding the severity of disparities, quantitative-only approaches cannot address nor can they improve the critical root causes of these disparities. As a team of BIPOC graduate students in public health, we conducted a community-based participatory research project using Photovoice methodology to explore inequities in Black and Brown communities exacerbated during the COVID-19 pandemic. The participatory nature of this research revealed cumulative challenges across the social determinants of health in New Haven and Bridgeport, Connecticut. It allowed us to engage in local-level advocacy to promote health equity as our findings illuminated the need for community-led and community-engaged action. Health and racial inequities cannot be effectively addressed if public health research and programming do not collaborate with the community to build community capacity, empowerment, and trust. We describe our experiences doing community-based participatory research to investigate inequities and provide reflections on their value for public health students. As responses to health inequities and disparities become more politically polarized in the United States, it is critical for public health and health education students to use research methodologies that elevate communities that have been historically marginalized and neglected. Over the last decade, there has been a growing interest in mental health literacy (MHL) in health promotion, largely motivated by increased awareness of MHL as a modifiable determinant of mental health. Accordingly, MHL has been associated with the health-promoting school approach emerging over the last 20 years. To succeed in promoting MHL, it is of vast importance to evaluate working strategies and interventions to address MHL using validated instruments. The current study describes the revision and psychometric testing of a modified version of the 10-item adolescents' positive MHL measure, the MHPK-10, the only identified instrument measuring adolescents' positive MHL. The MHPK-10 was adjusted to address the previously documented ceiling effects and was further optimized for use in schools by reworking it to measure learning rather than self-reported knowledge, becoming the new nine-item Mental Health Learning Scale (MHLS-9). The MHLS-9 was tested on a national sample of N = 2,012 Norwegian ninth graders. Data were analyzed by confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and tests of reliability and validity. The revised CFA model for the MHLS-9 showed an improved fit over the original CFA model for the MHPK-10. The MHLS-9s' CFA model revealed excellent factor determinacy (.95) and scale reliability (ω =.91). Thus, the MHLS-9 is an improved measure for the positive component of MHL for use in school settings, enabling researchers and practitioners to evaluate and focus positive MHL interventions in schools using a short, reliable, and valid measure for adolescents' learning about the factors promoting good mental health. Introduction. Ineffective health communication can drive health disparities and limit the effectiveness of interventions to reduce them. Stock photo libraries are a critical tool for developers of patient education, health education, and intervention materials. It is not clear how well stock photo libraries represent communities bearing disproportionate burdens of disease. Method. We conducted a search using five popular stock image libraries (Adobe Stock Images, Canva, Getty Images, Microsoft Office Image Library, and Pixabay) in November 2021 to evaluate diversity and representation in health-related stock photos. We searched for the following five key preventive health topics: healthy eating, exercising, quitting smoking, vaccination, and pregnancy. The images (N = 495) were coded for age, gender presentation, representation of perceived minoritized racial/ethnic identity, skin color using the Massey–Martin skin color scale, markers of high socioeconomic status (SES), and access costs. Results. The representation of perceived minoritized people, darker skin color, and inclusion of markers of high SES varied greatly by the search term and library. Images predominately portrayed young adults and adults, with limited representation of other age groups. Images in libraries with any paywall were significantly more likely to depict a person of perceived minoritized racial/ethnic identity and depict darker skin colors, and were significantly less likely to contain markers of high SES identity than images in libraries that were free to use. Discussion. We found that it costs more to develop culturally relevant health education materials for minoritized populations and groups that do not represent high SES populations. Background: Although exercise has been shown to improve cancer survivorship in other communities, cancer exercise studies among Native American communities are rare. We sought to adapt a Navajo-tailored cancer exercise pilot program to serve a broader Native American cancer community. Methods: Tribal experts representing 10 different Tribal Nations were engaged in small focus groups (n = 2–4) to assess program materials for cultural appropriateness and adaptation to expand tribal inclusiveness. Facilitated by a trained Native American interviewer, focus groups were provided a primer survey and then reviewed intervention materials (protocols, incentives, logo, flyers, etc.). Consensus was reached by the research team on all program adaptations. Results: The program name, Restoring Balance, layout, graphics, and symbols were considered culturally appropriate overall. Program exercises and biomarker measurements were viewed as valuable to health improvements in the community. Important color, linguistic, and logistic program modifications were recommended to improve cultural alignment. The order of incentive items was revised to highlight restoration and the logo rotated to align with the four corners of the earth, an important cultural element. Linguistic modifications primarily related to prior traumatic research experiences in Native American communities where data had been taken without adequate community benefit or permission. Program emphasis should be on nurturing, added value and giving. Conclusion and Relevance: The methodology used for cultural expert review was successful in eliciting adaptations to expand the tribal inclusiveness of Restoring Balance. Considering the possible adverse effects of thyroid autoantibodies on the brain, the present study aimed to investigate whether there was a difference in mental health difficulties and mindfulness awareness levels between subclinical Hashimoto's thyroiditis patients with and without levothyroxine (LT4) use. A case-control study was conducted. The Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) and the Mindful Attention Awareness Scale (MAAS) were used to screen mental health difficulties and mindfulness awareness. Scale scores were compared by performing correlation analysis between the groups with respect to LT4 use and thyroid autoantibodies. Levothyroxine alone does not affect scale results. Higher thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPOAb) titers were positively correlated with the behavioral problems subscale of the SDQ, while awareness level in patients was inversely correlated with higher thyroglobulin antibody (TgAb) levels. Recent developments in Hong Kong end-of-life (EOL) care have shifted some caring work for dying people and their families to cross-disciplinary collaboration in community settings. Social-medical collaboration becomes especially important. This study aims to use social capital as an analytical lens to examine the processes and mechanisms of social-medical collaboration in EOL care and elucidate practice implications for engaging in the care of dying people and their families. Qualitative data were collected using in-depth interviews. Three major conceptual categories were generated through grounded theory methodology. They are (a) establishing trust through keeping clear and simple boundaries, (b) cultivating mutuality in the multi-disciplinary meeting, and (c) fostering social-medical collaboration in EOL care. Each new stage is based on the social capital accumulated in the previous one through the social interactions between professionals. Objectives: During public health emergencies, people at risk of exposure or illness will likely be presented with extensive information about an unfamiliar topic and be asked to make decisions quickly. In difficult situations, people often turn to trusted leaders, including from their local faith-based congregation (FBC). We examined how people receive, interpret, and respond to health communication information from clergy and lay leaders from their local FBC during public health emergencies. Methods: We analyzed responses to 10 questions from a 2021 nationally representative US survey. Porter Novelli designed the survey and administered it to 4510 US adults aged ≥18 years, of whom 3553 people completed the survey. We examined sociodemographic characteristics, trust of health information from clergy and lay leaders, and willingness to engage in health behaviors recommended by their FBC and receive health services through their local FBC. All estimates were weighted. We conducted bivariate analysis with contrast t tests for proportions at α =.05. Results: More than half of adults (55.4%), including 65.8% of non-Hispanic Black and 58.8% of Hispanic or Latino adults, were members of an FBC. Among FBC members, a higher percentage of Hispanic or Latino (29.1%) and non-Hispanic Black (36.3%) adults than non-Hispanic White adults (20.4%) reported trust in their FBC for health information (P <.05). This trust translated into greater intent to engage in health behaviors promoted by the local FBC among non-Hispanic Black respondents (31.4%) compared with non-Hispanic White respondents (22.5%) (P <.05). Conclusions: Public health officials can consider ways to better understand how the cultures and practices of populations being served influence people's health perceptions and behaviors. This systematic review investigates how participatory visual methods (PVMs) (1) are applied in community health interventions (CHIs) with adult migrant populations and (2) identify potentials for participation. The search was performed in PubMed in 2021 and 2023. Eighteen articles fulfilled inclusion criteria as they investigated a CHI targeting migrants and used a visual method. We excluded articles that used quantitative methods, articles written in languages other than English, Danish, Swedish, or Norwegian, and the formats reviews, protocols, and theoretical articles. As a framework to graduate the degree of participation, we applied Arnstein's 'A Ladder of Citizen Participation'. Most of the studies took place in the United States, and the most frequent method used was photovoice. We categorize an equal number of articles as 'degrees of citizen power' or 'degrees of tokenism'. We identify the capacity to accommodate the needs of specific target groups to be a strength in PVMs, which has potential to engage migrants in several parts of the research process. Additionally, PVMs can be used to support a change in the participants' lives by facilitating a reflexive process concerning their life situation. Our objective was to investigate the status and influence of myopia among primary school students in Fushun, Liaoning Province, China. We aimed to provide a theoretical and epistemological basis for implementing myopia prevention initiatives. We employed cluster sampling and surveyed 5216 primary school students from grades 1–6 across eight primary schools in Fushun City. Our participants included 2606 males and 2610 females whose average age was 9.25 (SD = 1.76) years. The rate of myopia among these primary school students was 29.54%, with statistically significant differences among students of different genders and grades. Logistic regression analysis further identified several possible protective factors, including appropriate reading distance, adequate home lighting, regular breaks between classes, conscientious eye exercises, and daily outdoor physical activity. Conversely, the associated risk factors were being female, being in a higher grade level, spending more than 4 hours on homework, occasionally reading while lying down, and having one or both parents with myopia. Overall, our results indicated a high incidence of myopia, highlighting the need for scientifically controlled interventions to manage and mitigate the occurrence and progression of myopia in this population. This study aimed to (1) develop evidence-based resources and (2) test face, content validity, and usability of a newly developed mobile application (app) to equip and empower caregivers with resources and skills to promote better oral health for autistic children. A series of resources on oral health, including information on oral diseases and home care and social stories on dental visits were developed. Concurrently, an app was developed by dentists, occupational therapist and software developers. The resources underwent content validation by an international panel of paediatric dentists (Expert Working Group). Face validation of the resources and usability testing of the app by parents were then carried out. Validation and feedback were obtained by the Delphi method, with consensus set at 70% agreement. A total of 12 resources and 2 social stories were developed. Consensus was achieved among the Expert Working Group regarding the content and illustrations of the resources and social stories. Both the Expert Working Group and parents agreed that the resources were easy to read and understand. Parents also found the app easy to use, aesthetically pleasing and help them to better care for their child's oral health. Caregivers of autistic children often lack knowledge regarding oral homecare and when and where to see the dentist. To address this need, we developed a series of information on oral health. An autistic child assisted in developing two social stories to showcase a dental visit. A mobile app was developed to deliver the above mentioned. Other features include creation of customised social stories and visual schedule and an inbox to allow dentists to send messages to parents. The developed information and social stories were reviewed by experts and parents. The app also underwent anonymous and independent testing by parents. Objective: Physical activity in people with stroke remains low despite considerable research. This overview aimed to provide high-level synthesis and aid clinical decision-making. The Capability, Opportunity, Motivation-Behaviour (COM-B) model was used to classify interventions to understand which components improve physical activity behaviour in people with stroke. Data Sources: CINAHL, Cochrane Database, MEDLINE, PEDro, PsychINFO, SPORTDiscus Review Methods: A systematic search was conducted (November 2023) to identify reviews of interventions to improve physical activity in people with stroke. Results were screened and assessed for eligibility. Participant characteristics, intervention classification using COM-B, and effect of intervention were extracted. Quality was assessed using AMSTAR2, and Corrected Cover Analysis for study overlap. Narrative synthesis was used to understand components of interventions to improve physical activity behaviour. Results: 1801 references were screened and 29 full-text references assessed for eligibility. Twenty reviews were included. Quality ranged from critically low (n = 3) to high (n = 10). Study overlap calculated using corrected cover area indicated slight overlap (0.028) and minimal reporting bias. The majority of participants were mobile with mild stroke and community dwelling. Twenty-three interventions were classified using COM-B. Three of twelve interventions classified to one aspect of the COM-B were effective. Fourteen of sixteen effective interventions combined at least two COM-B elements, ten of these combined capability and motivation. Conclusion: Interventions including at least two elements of the COM-B are most likely to improve physical activity in mobile stroke survivors. Background: The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the mental health of healthcare workers throughout the world has been reported, but most studies have been cross-sectional and excluded the Midwestern U.S. healthcare workforce. Objective: This study aimed to longitudinally assess the psychological wellbeing and wellness strategies used by a Midwestern academic health system's workforce at multiple points throughout waves of the COVID-19 pandemic to inform ongoing implementation of appropriate wellness activities. Methods: An anonymous REDCap survey linked within our team-developed wellness education was posted in the employee online newsletter in April (T1), July (T2), October 2020 (T3), and May 2021 (T4). Surveys were open to all employees (approx. 9000) for approximately 12 days at each time point. Anxiety, depressive symptoms, stress, self-efficacy, and self-care activities were assessed. Following each data collection, team members discussed findings and planned wellness education implementation. Results: Response ranged from n = 731 (T1) to n = 172 (T4). Moderate to severe stress was reported by 29.5% (n = 203) of respondents at T1 and 34.0% (n = 108) at T2. At T3, all psychological symptoms significantly increased (p <.001) as COVID-19 surged, with 48.5% (n = 141) of respondents reporting moderate to severe stress. At T4, stress significantly declined (p <.001). Exercise was the most frequently reported coping strategy. Conclusions: Mental health symptoms reported by a Midwestern healthcare workforce increased during surges of COVID-19 hospitalizations. Background: Only 21% of U.S. women meet the recommended physical activity guidelines, placing them at increased risk for long-term conditions such as heart disease and diabetes. Physical activity is influenced by individual and interpersonal factors (e.g., romantic partners). Individual factors, such as positive affect, are associated with lower mortality risk and improved health behaviors. Objectives: This secondary data analysis, guided by Fredrickson's Broaden and Build Theory, aims to examine the relationship between positive affect of married women (n = 115 couples) and their physical activity behavior on the same- and next- day, while also considering their spouses' positive affect. Methods: Two population average models assessed the relationship of calm and happy (positive affect) to physical activity. Physical activity was assessed as the sum of the minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) over the prior 24 hours. Covariates of age, baseline activity frequency, education, marital quality, and race/ethnicity were also included. Results: Women's happiness (β = 0.15, p <.005), not calmness (β = −0.03, p =.60), was found to have a significant association with same-day MVPA. Spouses' happiness (β = 0.11, p =.045) was significantly associated with women's next-day MVPA while their calmness (β = −0.04, p =.44) was not. Conclusions: The results of this study support that incorporating positive affect could be valuable for improving physical activity behaviors. Objective: This study aims (1) to understand the needs and challenges of the current intensive care unit (ICU) environments in supporting patient well-being from the perspective of healthcare professionals (HCPs) and (2) to explore the new potential of ICU environments enabled by technology. Background: Evidence-based design has yielded how the design of environments can advocate for patient well-being, and digital technology offers new possibilities for indoor environments. However, the role of technology in facilitating ICU patient well-being has been unexplored. Method: This study was conducted in two phases. First, a mixed-method study was conducted with ICU HCPs from four Dutch hospitals. The study investigated the current environmental support for care activities, as well as the factors that positively and negatively contribute to patient experience. Next, a co-creation session was held involving HCPs and health technology experts to explore opportunities for technology to support ICU patient well-being. Results: The mixed-method study revealed nine negative and eight positive patient experience factors. HCPs perceived patient emotional care as most challenging due to the ICU workload and a lack of environmental support in fulfilling patient emotional needs. The co-creation session yielded nine technology-enabled solutions to address identified challenges. Finally, drawing from insights from both studies, four strategies were introduced that guide toward creating technology to provide holistic and personalized care for patients. Conclusion: Patient experience factors are intertwined, necessitating a multifactorial approach to support patient well-being. Aim: The aim was to investigate factors influencing obesity among stroke survivors based on demographics and lifestyle behaviors. Background: Stroke survivors are more likely to experience stroke recurrence within a few years. As obesity is a traditional risk factor for stroke, obesity should be managed in stroke survivors to prevent stroke recurrence. Methods: A cross-sectional secondary data analysis analyzed data from the 2017 United States Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) survey. Demographics, frequency of vegetable and fruit intake, smoking, alcohol use, physical activity, and sleep were examined. Results: Among 1032 stroke survivors, 57.8% were obese. Advanced age, female sex, veteran status, at least once-daily fruit intake, current smoking, and lack of physical activity were associated with obesity. Conclusion: Stroke survivors should be encouraged to pursue healthy behaviors to manage obesity. Global guidelines emphasize the critical role of responsive caregiving in terms of reducing violence against children and promoting early childhood development. However, there is an absence of global evidence synthesis on the effects of early childhood parenting programs for children with developmental disabilities. This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to investigate the effectiveness of parenting interventions delivered for preschool-age children with developmental disabilities in reducing violence against children, altering violence-related factors, and promoting child development. We searched for randomized controlled trials with inactive control. Estimates were pooled using robust variance estimations. Meta-regressions were conducted to explore sources of heterogeneity. In all, 33 studies met the inclusion criteria. The results showed that parenting programs improved child behavior, parental mental health, parenting practices, parental self-efficacy, parent–child interaction, child language skills, and child social skills post-intervention. No studies provided data on the actual occurrence of violence against children. Effects might vary by diagnosis, delivery modality, and world region. The findings supported the delivery of parenting programs to alter factors associated with violence against children and promote child language and social skills for families of young children with developmental disabilities, especially attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, autism, intellectual disability, and language disorders. More research using rigorous methods, long-term follow-ups, and transparent reporting is needed, particularly within more low- and middle-income countries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A woman's choice to remain childfree is often met with disapproving comments. This article focuses on pronatalism and the social discourse that promotes and maintains motherhood as the preferred choice for women in a country that has achieved high levels of gender equality. Critical discourse analysis is applied to 30 qualitative interviews with women, trans, and non-binary people in Iceland, who are either childfree by choice or who regret motherhood. The results indicate that despite neoliberalism advocating a woman's right to freedom of choice, pronatalist ideologies continue to undermine reproductive self-determination, promoting motherhood as the right choice. Unsolicited comments act as powerful mechanisms that serve to shame those who can bear children into becoming mothers or facing regret yet simultaneously condemn women who regret motherhood. Women who choose to remain childfree privately challenge unwanted comments by overturning pronatalist discourses, whereas those who regret their choice to become mothers struggle to express their feelings for fear of being judged and branded as failures. This article reviews the literature for tools that measure the knowledge of basic palliative care concepts in teenagers as set forth by the World Health Organization who challenged Health Promoting Schools to provide health literacy and to increase knowledge of palliative care concepts. Teenagers constitute an underrepresented population in terms of understanding palliative care, despite often possessing the ability to make medical decisions. The aim of this article is to examine instruments that may be utilized to measure high school students' knowledge of basic palliative care concepts, even if they may require modification. A Google Scholar and PubMed search resulted in finding that with modifications the Palliative Care Knowledge Scale and Palliative Care Quiz for Nurses can be utilized for measuring knowledge of palliative care concepts in teenagers', which serves as a first step in meeting this population where they are in understanding and improving their heath literacy for future access and utilization of palliative care resources. A home is a preferred place of death by most people. Nurses play a key role in supporting end-of-life home care, yet less is known about the factors that determine home as a place of death. This scoping review describes the percentage of actual places of death and determines social factors related to home as the place of death among noncancer patients with end-stage chronic health conditions. Inclusion criteria included (1) noncancer chronic illness conditions, (2) outcomes of place of death, and (3) factors that determine home as a place of death. Sources of evidence included PubMed, CINAHL, and Web of Science databases, which were searched in May 2022, and additional searches from May 2022 to November 2023.The JBI scoping review guide (2020) and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Scoping Review extension were used. Twenty-eight studies were included in this analysis. The range of percentages is varied within the same place of death among the sample. Two major constructs that determine a home as a place of death were identified: preceding factors and social capital. The results suggest that the place of death among noncancer patients with end-stage chronic health conditions should be continued to be understood. Two constructs determined home as a place of death and are considered as a fundamental to increasing equal accessibility in the initiation of palliative care services to promote home death and meet end-of-life care goals. Palliative care in community contexts is undergoing significant change as a result of public policy and new models of care, which link health promotion principles with palliative care practices. These models support the creation of partnerships between formal care structures and the communities in which care is provided. Given the central role of nurses in the institutional delivery of palliative care, particularly in the home, it is important to provide a systematic description of the activities of nurses that fall within the principles of health promotion. The objective was to describe the diverse range of nursing activities for health promotion that are provided in the palliative home care setting. This is an integrative review. Fifty-five studies listed in the MEDLINE, CINAHL and EMBASE databases, and published between 1999 and December 2022, were identified. Data analysis and presentation of the results were guided by Kellehear's Health-Promoting Palliative Care (HPPC) model. Six themes were identified to describe nursing activities for health promotion in the context of palliative home care: creating a meaningful relationship, supplying medical information, promoting self-care throughout the trajectory, providing emotional support, involving professional or community services and supporting change. The findings point to nurses focusing more on the individual context and on direct care. The relationship with communities in which they work remains unidirectional. However, some HPPC principles are relevant to nursing activities through the contextualization of nurses' actions and their moral responsibility to work towards the respect of patient's values. Being poorly described, how nurses can truly engage their practice towards health-promoting principles, such as the enhancement of support and control over their lives for people living with serious illness, still requires further empirical research. Introduction: Low vision rehabilitation provides strategies to substitute for visual impairment and the resultant limitations of low vision by enhancing remaining vision and other sensory or motor abilities in individuals. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the level of knowledge of and perceived barriers to providing low vision rehabilitation by optometrists in Pakistan. Methods: In this qualitative, cross-sectional study, a convenient sample of 100 participants was included and a structured, validated, self-administered questionnaire was provided to collect demographic information and to identify the level of knowledge, awareness, and perceived barriers regarding low vision rehabilitation. Data was analyzed using frequency distribution and Pearson's chi-square test to understand the significance of barriers to low vision care provision. Results: A total of 100 participants completed the study questionnaire (59 males, 41 females) with a mean age of 26 (±6.1 SD) years. Eighty-two participants (82%) had an adequate understanding of low vision as per WHO's criteria. However, 47% of participants failed to identify the steps of low vision rehabilitation. Newly graduated practicing optometrists (i.e., those with less than 3 years' experience) had a significantly better understanding of low vision definition and low vision rehabilitation steps, as compared to more experienced optometrists (p <.05). Also, those working in private practices were more likely to consider low vision rehabilitation as less profitable (p =.025, odds ratio = 2.56, CI = 1.1–5.8), compared to those working in hospitals. Discussion: Lack of training and unavailability of low vision devices are major barriers, as perceived by optometrists in Pakistan. Rigorous attempts are needed to educate eye care practitioners specifically optometrists about the availability and usage of low-cost, improved-quality, and up-to-date low vision devices in the country. Implications for p ractitioners: Continuous professional development through refresher courses is crucial to enhance knowledge of low vision rehabilitation. Educating optometrists to adopt a multidisciplinary and empathetic approach toward patient management may improve patients' satisfaction and success with rehabilitative services. High levels of burnout among healthcare providers (HCPs) have been a widely documented phenomenon, which have been exacerbated during the COVID-19 pandemic. In the United States, qualitative studies that are inclusive of HCPs in diverse professional roles have been limited. Therefore, we utilized a qualitative–quantitative design to examine professional quality of life in terms of compassion fatigue, burnout, and secondary traumatic stress among hospital-based HCPs, including social workers, hospitalists, residents, and palliative care team members during COVID-19. HCPs (n = 26) participated in virtual semi-structured focus groups or individual interviews and online surveys (n = 30) including the Professional Quality of Life (ProQOL) Scale. While ProQOL scores indicated low levels of compassion fatigue, burnout, and secondary traumatic stress, thematic analysis of our qualitative data included rich descriptions of compassion fatigue, burnout, and secondary traumatic stress. Safety concerns and value misalignment characterized structural stressors perceived to contribute to HCP compassion fatigue, burnout, and secondary traumatic stress. The discrepancy between our qualitative and quantitative findings may be indication that modifications to current screenings are warranted. These findings also suggest a need to identify and implement structural and policy changes that increase HCPs' physical and emotional safety and promote better alignment of institutional interests with HCP values. Community service-learning (CSL) is commonly featured in health promotion curriculum. Lauded for its pedagogical richness and transformative potential, CSL is also pedagogically messy and often experienced as a struggle. And yet, the content, contexts and conditions of that which students find disorienting in CSL have garnered little attention in the literature. In this qualitative, phenomenological study, we explore the "disorienting dilemma" as an understated concept in CSL. Our aim is to better understand the disorienting dilemma to "make CSL a smoother experience for everyone." We draw upon reflections from 39 students enrolled in a full-year undergraduate health promotion CSL course. Using directed content analysis, we read and coded 390 reflections. In mapping the codes (n = 2104), we found them to cluster around three domains: (i) aspects of the CSL learning experience that were most disorienting, (ii) course aspects that enabled students to navigate their disorientation, and (iii) how students relate their learning to the disorientation. Students often shared their emotional experience of CSL as a pedagogy, and that they struggled with the process of real program planning, and uncertainty with how they related to the community. Often, it was the practical, social, and relational content that students struggled with that morphed into support for students to navigate their disorientation. We found students to relate their disorientation to new self-learning, a changed and more collectivist criteria of success, and an altered sense of self in relation to community. The COVID-19 pandemic continues to disproportionately impact communities of color and expose health inequities. Minoritized communities experience disparities in chronic diseases, premature death, and cancer, and gaps continue to widen; systemic injustice in housing, nutrition, and environment are major contributors. At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic and racial justice movement, students at the University of Louisville School of Medicine created Grow502 to speak truth to the challenges of health disparities in Louisville, Kentucky. The goal was to pursue a healthier community by raising awareness. Community leaders and health professionals provided expert consultation. This partnership led to the co-creation of a curriculum focused on education, advocacy, community engagement, and creative media. Grow502 sought to support communities impacted by injustices due to racism, limited health literacy, redlining, and limited green space by creating programming centered on education and empowerment. Effective strategies to reduce disparities involve creating interventions with authentic engagement and context. Grow502 involves community stakeholders as active partners. We continue to intentionally seek effective collaborations and interventions that merge our mission and our diverse communities impacted by health disparities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

People experiencing homelessness are at increased risk for HIV, and people with HIV (PWH) experiencing homelessness are more likely to experience suboptimal HIV health outcomes than PWH with stable housing. Within Alabama, a state prioritized in the Ending the HIV Epidemic initiative, Jefferson County consistently has the highest number of new HIV diagnoses as well as a high percentage of the state's homeless population. To address the twin epidemics of both HIV and homelessness within the high-priority setting of Jefferson County, Alabama, this 1-year community-based project, Ending the HIV Epidemic: Addressing HIV Health and Homelessness (AH3), sought to increase HIV testing and linkage to care among this population by placing a full-time case manager trained in HIV testing and case management at a homeless shelter. Results demonstrated that HIV testing was highly acceptable: 733 individuals were offered a test, and only 2.7% (n = 20) declined. Nine previously diagnosed, out of care PWH and one newly diagnosed PWH were identified through AH3 testing efforts. Of these, five (50%) were linked to care at a local HIV clinic. The remaining five PWH left the shelter before they could be linked to care. Just 10 shelter guests expressed interest in taking PrEP (just 1.4% of guests who tested negative for HIV), and only one of these linked to PrEP care. Future health promotion programs are needed to address mental health and other ancillary needs among this population, as well as programs that provide access to PrEP and other HIV prevention services. Promoting physical activity (PA) at the community level is a complex, multisector approach requiring researchers and practitioners to impact the individual, interpersonal, environment, and policy levels. One such strategy aiming to impact systems, policies, and environments is the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Activity Friendly Routes to Everyday Destinations (Routes to Destinations). This strategy specifically aims to connect pedestrian, bicycle, and public transportation systems with built environment and land use destinations. This article examines Black/African American transportation and land use experts' perspectives and concerns—across multiple mediums—around inequities that have discouraged PA among Black/African American persons specifically Routes to Destinations strategies. In March 2021, a multifaceted scoping review was conducted of peer-reviewed literature, gray literature, and social media authored by Black/African American transportation and land use experts focusing on policy, system, and environmental changes which promote or discourage equitable and inclusive access to physical activity. Themes from peer-reviewed and gray literature resources included: (1) Assessing Racism, Discrimination, and Segregation; (2) Addressing Equity and Inclusion Through Policy; (3) Community Engagement and Place-Based Interventions; (4) Infrastructure Changes; (5) Safety; and (6) Reporting Health Disparities. Twitter topic models suggested the main topics included elements of race/racism, equity, safety, infrastructure, and advancing social justice. Experts called for systemic and systematic change through new policies and implementation of existing policies as well as enhanced community inclusion in decision-making through ownership of policy and built environment change.
