The article focuses on community organization and participation of people in a democratic society. It informs that for almost two centuries, Americans have been living in the midst of the largest scale political experiment ever conducted. Its foundation is the premise that the individual man has definite rights and privileges and responsibilities. That freedoms offered by democracy, have been taken for granted by most Americans. Democracy depends upon an intelligent, ever-watchful citizenry, intelligent enough to recognize the political charlatan, intelligent enough to weigh and evaluate ideas in terms of their worth to themselves and their fellow citizens. Adult education in a democracy should point to broadening the horizons of its citizens in social, cultural, vocational, and physical areas in order to maintain and further develop: an intelligent electorate, a healthy and happy citizenry, vocationally competent workers, a broader cultural base for all, an understanding of our rights and responsibilities and those of our fellow men.
