While studying sociology can be empowering and transformative, fostering criticality and reflexivity, this capacity is not being sufficiently harnessed in school/college-based delivery in England. A large survey of sociology teachers revealed that they are required to teach outdated and sometimes discredited studies, which can reinforce rather than challenge stereotypes held by the privileged and which can be disempowering for those students who cannot recognise their own experiences. This article provides a unique insight into the ways that school/college curricula reinforce inequality and contributes to important debates within the sociology of education. Specifically, the article argues that the work being undertaken to decolonise the curriculum in universities, through challenging structural and discursive operations of power, should also inform the revision of school/college specifications. This article explores the challenges of monitoring and evaluating politically informed and adaptive programmes in the international development field. We assess the strengths and weaknesses of some specific evaluation methodologies which have been suggested as particularly appropriate for these kinds of programmes based on scholarly literature and the practical experience of the authors in using them. We suggest that those methods which assume generative causality are particularly well suited to the task. We also conclude that factoring in the politics of uncertainty and evidence generation and use is particularly important in order to recognize and value diverse experiential knowledge, integrate understandings of the local context, accommodate adaptation and realistically grapple with the power relations which are inherent in evaluation processes. Introduction: Clinical placements are a mandatory component of nursing students' education internationally. Despite clinical education being a key to nursing students' achievement of nursing competencies, few studies have reviewed students' narratives to describe their experiences of learning during clinical placement. Such studies may be important in offering a deeper insight into clinical learning experiences than quantitative surveys. Methods: A s ystematic thematic synthesis of qualitative studies between 2010 and June 2020 was conducted. English language studies that offered a thematic analysis of undergraduate nursing students' experiences of learning during placement were sought. A search was made of five databases PubMed, Ovid Medline, CinahlPlus, SCOPUS, and Google Scholar. The study was guided by the ENTREQ statement for enhancing transparency in reporting the synthesis of qualitative research. Results: Twenty-seven qualitative studies were included in the review. A thematic synthesis showed over 100 themes and subthemes across the studies. A cluster analysis revealed positive elements and others that were seen in the studies as a barrier (hindrance) to clinical learning. Positive elements included supportive instructors, close supervision, and belonging (in the team). Unsupportive instructors, a lack of supervision and not being included were seen as a hindrance. Three key overarching themes that could describe a successful placement were revealed as "Preparation," "Welcomed and wanted" and "Supervision experiences". A conceptual model of clinical placement elements conducive to nursing students' learning was developed to enhance understanding of the complexities associated with supervision. The findings and model are presented and discussed. Conclusion: The conceptual model presents positive elements that influence students' clinical placement experiences of learning. This model may provide a framework to guide professional development programs and strategies to support students and supervisors alike, an important step forward in moving beyond the current clinical placement rhetoric. A scoping review aims to systematically explore and map the research available from a wide range of sources. The objective of this study was to produce a scoping review checklist to guide future scoping studies to enable rigorous review and critique of phenomena of interest. The methods used included a review of literature, expert consensus group meetings, a modified Delphi survey and, finally, verification against recent scoping study examples. Results showed that the checklist was able to identify key elements of scoping reviews. The 22-item Scoping Review Checklist (SRC), which includes two optional stakeholder consultation items, has been developed using rigorous recommended approaches. This article examines how intensifying inequality in the UK plays out at a local level, in order to bring out the varied ways polarisation takes place 'on the ground'. It brings a community analysis buttressed by quantitative framing to the study of economic, spatial and relational polarisation in four towns in the UK. We distinguish differing dynamics of 'elite-based' polarisation (in Oxford and Tunbridge Wells) and 'poverty-based' polarisation (in Margate and Oldham). Yet there are also common features. Across the towns, marginalised communities express a sense of local belonging. But tensions between social groups also remain strong and all towns are marked by a weak or 'squeezed middle'. We argue that the weakness of intermediary institutions, including but not limited to the 'missing middle', and capable of bridging gaps between various social groups, provides a major insight into both the obstacles to, and potential solutions for, re-politicising inequality today. This article discusses the Fast Food Shutdown, a strike on 4 October 2018 that involved Wetherspoon, McDonald's, TGI Fridays and UberEats workers in the United Kingdom. It compares the different strategies of the Bakers Food and Allied Workers' Union at Wetherspoon and Industrial Workers of the World at UberEats. The two case studies, drawing on the authors' ongoing ethnographic research, provide important examples of successful precarious worker organising. In particular, the argument focuses on the role of action in organising, as well as the relationship between the rank-and-file and the union. While these could point the way to the recomposition of the workers movement – both in greenfield sectors and within existing unions – there remain important questions about how these experiences can be generalised. This article reports the largest UK study of sociology school teachers' views of the discipline. Drawing on the sociology of the professions, we reflect on the ambivalent positioning of sociology in schools. Despite buoyant uptake, teachers claim that sociology is perceived as dated and has lower status than other elective courses, often described as a 'soft' and 'easy' subject that anyone can teach. While many students are reported to benefit from the transformative education that sociology affords, the failure to designate the subject as facilitating entry to higher status universities serves to further marginalise the discipline. We argue that sociology in schools is weakly bounded, poorly supported and lacks strong professional coherence. While this allows sociology to have an open, critical and reflexive character, it comes at the price of not being able to control delivery in schools and make claims for high status. Despite the increased attention given to the relationship between masculinity and health, the analysis of men's use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is relatively underdeveloped compared with studies of female use. Through the thematic synthesis of existing research studies, this article collates and analyzes patterns of, and motivations for, male usage of CAM. We reveal that there are significant levels of male use of CAM, which cannot be explained by recourse to general or gendered patterns of health-seeking behavior or health status. Men who use CAM tend to exhibit similar demographic characteristics to female users, but also show patterns of engagement that both reinforce and challenge hegemonic masculinity. The article suggests that there remains a need to investigate the nuances and complexities of the motivations behind male usage patterns, and interrogate how these intersect with the performance of masculine selves. Objective: This study explored young university students’ (aged 18–24 years) health literacy, asthma experiences and help-seeking behaviours to inform the development of a web-based asthma education intervention relevant to this age group. Design: Exploratory mixed-methods design incorporateing a health literacy survey and interviews, plus the development of a web-based educational video. Setting: Participants were students at two universities in the state of Victoria, Australia. Method: In total, 20 asthma sufferers were interviewed by trained pairs of university students. Interpretative phenomenology underpinned the narrative analysis and enabled the description of the participants’ lived experience. A branching e-simulation video was developed. Results: A number of key themes were identified: ‘Life with asthma’, including ‘A life of vigilance’ regarding asthma triggers, lifestyle limitations and heightened sensitivities; ‘Asthma management – call Mum’, a lack of knowledge and support systems with substantial maternal reliance; ‘Health literacy: family and Dr Google’, denoting low health literacy levels with passive reluctant involvement in personal health management; and ‘Information gathering – one size doesn’t fit all’ – in the form of the need for immediate gratification and resource variety. Based on interviewees’ words and terminology, we designed an interactive branching educational video for YouTube portraying a young person (an actor) during an asthma flare-up. Conclusion: Young adults lacked insight into their condition and even after moving away from home, relied on Google searches and/or parents’ advice. To enhance health-seeking behaviours, interactive programmes with smartphone access may be valuable. We conducted a study to examine how people perceptually encode and then recognize real artworks and constructed design patterns. We first manipulated depth of processing during an incidental perceptual encoding task (Phase 1) wherein participants made both affective/aesthetic and cognitive judgments. For painting stimuli, the contrast was between liking (yes/no) and a search for food in the paintings (present/absent). For design stimuli, the comparison was between liking and relative similarity of figure and ground in terms of color or texture. In Phase 2, we examined the effects of transforming visual features (i.e., color and texture) of the original stimuli on performance in a surprise recognition-memory task. Consistent with a depth-of-processing hypothesis, affective (i.e., liking) processing led to deeper perceptual encoding but, counter to our predictions, did not lead to better performance in the recognition-memory task. This benefit of aesthetic processing in the encoding phase was only observed with artworks but not with constructed design patterns that lacked salient semantic content. Moreover, texture transformations were discerned more accurately than color transformations across the different stimulus sets and tasks. This underscores the primacy of bottom-up processing of elementary stimulus features over top-down instructions to make affective judgments or search for semantic content. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of the current study was to evaluate the psychometric properties of a recently developed measure of working memory: the Double Span Task. The Double Span Task is the first experimental task designed to assess all three components of Baddeley's (1992) model of working memory. The reliability of the Double Span Task was assessed in a sample of 105 older adults (M age = 64.3 yr., SD = 6.4). The internal consistency and test-retest reliability of the Double Span Task were good. The validity of the Double Span Task was assessed using a different sample of 49 older adults (M age = 70.0 yr., SD = 9.3). Performance on the Double Span Task was positively correlated with performance on a well-established measure of working memory, the Letter Number Sequencing Task. The Double Span Task also showed good discriminant validity. The Double Span Task is a reliable and valid measure of all three components of the working memory system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Occupational therapists are routinely engaged in the homes of their clients with disabilities, providing consultation on the use and modification of space to improve functional independence. The meaning of home space is currently underexplored. This study describes the meaning and use of home space for mothers who are primary caregivers for a child or adolescent with disabilities and high support needs. This article reports data from two empirical studies of mothers of children and adolescents with disabilities. In-depth interviews were conducted with 80 mothers across the two studies. Interview transcripts were analyzed with a grounded theory approach. Access around the home for a family member with disabilities allowed mothers to combine caring with other home management activities. However, preventing access or excluding the family member with a disability from some areas of the home enabled the mothers to resist the medicalization of their homes and create a personal space for themselves. Full access to the home for the child with disabilities was rarely a desirable outcome. Decisions about the home and how it should be modified to improve function become more complex when the needs of family members are taken into account. Meaning ascribed to space within the home is integral to how the space is used and whether a family member with a disability is included or excluded from the space. Most investigations of object recognition have focused on the form rather than the material properties of objects. Nevertheless, knowledge of the material properties of an object (via its surface cues) can provide important information about that object's identity. In this study, we used Garner's speeded-classification task to explore whether or not the processing of form and the processing of surface properties are independent. In experiment 1, participants made length and width classifications in an initial form task. Participants were unable to ignore length while making width classifications, and were unable to ignore width while making length classifications. This suggests that the perception of length and the perception of width share common processing resources. In a subsequent task, we examined possible interactions between the processing of form and the processing of surface properties. In contrast to the findings with the form task, participants were able to ignore form while making surface-property classifications, and to ignore surface properties while making form classifications. This suggests that the form of objects and their surface properties are processed independently. In experiment 2, we went on to show that the two prominent surface-property dimensions of colour and texture can also be processed independently. In other words, participants were able to ignore colour while making texture classifications, and vice versa. Finally, in experiment 3, we examined the possibility that the stimuli and required responses that we used in experiment 2 were too categorical and thus not optimal for assessing whether or not colour and texture share common processing resources. Using a different stimulus set, participants were again able to ignore colour while making texture classifications, and vice versa. Taken together, these results provided convincing evidence that the separate ventral-stream brain regions identified for form, texture, and colour in a recent neuroimaging study (Cant and Goodale, 2007 Cerebral Cortex 17 713–731) can indeed function independently. Children and adolescents who have survived childhood cancer are vulnerable to late effects of their disease and treatment experience, including both physical and psychological sequelae. The neurodevelopmental (ND) sequelae (e.g., difficulties with attention, memory, information processing, and other executive functions) faced by children surviving central nervous system (CNS) cancers or CNS treatments can have a range of effects on their psychological adjustment and quality of life as they reintegrate into school and social settings. Survivors facing such difficulties may be influenced by their family environment, and these struggles may in turn impact the perceived burden of their parents and family system, suggesting a bidirectional framework for understanding the impact of ND late effects within the family. The current study summarizes the following: Findings of family outcomes in children with ND late effects of cancer treatment; evaluation of methodological and measurement issues; the importance of examining bidirectional family-child influences; and implications for future survivorship research and clinical care addressing the role of ND late effects from a systems perspective. This study examines gender and developmental stage differences in physical and sexual abuse among Puerto Rican drug users. A structured questionnaire was administered to 799 participants in New York and 382 in Puerto Rico. Qualitative data were collected through in-depth life histories with 21 participants. Study participants included 297 female and 884 male Puerto Rican drug injectors and crack smokers. Females were significantly more likely than males to report physical abuse by a family member in childhood and unwanted sex in childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. This article focuses on the leisure pursuit of caving and those whoparticipate in caving (cavers), to explore how some cavers have constructed cavingas a pursuit that is highly sensuous, disrupting conventional constructions of the'heroic' figure of caver. The article locates the practice of caving within a broadercontext of outdoor recreation, identifying how caving has been constructed culturally,highlighting dominant ideas about heroic physical pursuit and under ground adventure. However, the physical geography of rock and spaces affects how a humanbody may encounter and experience caves, shaping sensuous and intimateunderground knowledges, and caver subjectivities; sometimes revealed in creativeand highly evocative ways. The article examines work by David Heap and Ian Chandler that demonstrates 'a love of caving'; they articulate ideas of intimacy andrelations between humans and environments through literature and sculpture,challenging dominant stereotypes, suggesting very particular physical, embodied,emotional and thoughtful geographies. The article focuses on a research conducted among complementary medical practitioners, focusing on issues of professionalisation. The objective of the study was to examine three groups of complementary therapists - reflexologists, homeopaths and chiropractors. The authors aimed to test their occupational boundaries with orthodox medicine. Complementary practitioners have tended to see themselves as beleaguered groups, threatened by the antagonistic power of orthodox medicine. In order to seek the opinion of the professionals regarding this, the authors conducted interviews with them. In some instances during the interviews with the participants, the interviewees used the interview as a means to gain information about other groups. they would be happy to cooperate with us. One of the authors was asked by one professional group to give a presentation on the research proposal to the directors and was asked her opinion on the kind of therapy advocated by them.

THIS paper examines the extent and type of collab orative work amongst community and practice nurses based in general practice in relation to health promotion. The data were drawn from a quantitative and qualitative study carried out from Autumn 1991 to Spring 1992, which investigated the prevention of coronary heart disease in general practice and the role of community nurses. This study formed part of a national survey of health promotion in general prac tice in relation to coronary heart disease, com missioned by the HEA and undertaken in collaboration with Kent University Centre of Health Services Studies. The study shows that there is mutual support and communication between prac tice nurses, health visitors and district nurses. How ever there is a strict division of labour within general practice which does not necessarily maximise the expertise and skills of the nurses concerned, and further training needs are identified. The new ar rangements for health promotion in the GP contract place emphasis on practice-based team work, to which the role of community nurses is central, but important management and training issues will need to be addressed for such team work to be successful. A prospective study has been carried out in 172 women to determine the sensitivity of methods to detect occult metastatic disease in the skeleton and liver. With the exception of bone scintiscans, the results of these tests bore little relationship to recurrence rates. On the other hand, knowledge of the histopathology of the lower axillary (pectoral) lymph nodes is of value in this respect.A follow-up study is also reported which confirms the importance of accurate measurements of the primary tumour clinical node status and oestrogen receptor contact of the tumour in defining prognostic groups. With rising longevity, increasing numbers of older people are experiencing changes in their everyday family and social life, changes in their financial status, and a greater number of chronic conditions affecting their health. We took the opportunity to explore these relationships with worry in a group of volunteer community-living elderly (n = 310). Findings showed that that those people under 75 years of age had a higher risk of worrying (OR = 1.8, 95% CI = 1.0-3.1) compared to the older age groups. Women worried more than men and an important finding was that those with chronic health conditions such as arthritis of the hip and knee were more prone to worry than those who were healthy or had acute conditions (OR = 3.5, 95% CI = 1.4-8.9). This latter finding suggests the importance placed on the role of the hip and knee in maintaining functional capacity to perform life skills. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
