This paper draws on two experiences of undertaking comparative research in England, Sweden and Italy, and offers a discussion of the kinds of dilemmas raised in relation to language and meaning surfaced by these. Its primary focus is to examine the reflexive construction of meaning, both in relation generally to the workings of an international research team and, more specifically, how such construction of meaning impacts on the process of qualitative interviewing across linguistic and cultural boundaries. The article argues that a culture of reflexive research practice is helpful for approaching national differences, to facilitate understanding in internationally mixed research teams and to support and empower participants in research, in second languages and differing cultures. Overall, the paper attempts to advance some tentative ideas that other international researchers may be able to consider and deploy in relation to their own research ambitions. As part of the Health Care Interaction project that was rolled out in western Sweden, home health nurses (HHNs) were called on as first responders to provide emergency treatment to patients, while waiting for the ambulance to arrive. The aim of this study was to evaluate the Health Care Interaction project in terms of the training and preparation of HHNs and the competencies that the nurses felt they needed to develop to feel confident in these assignments. In this qualitative descriptive study, 11 home health nurses from six municipalities that implemented the project were interviewed, and the data were analysed using content analysis. The COREQ guidelines were followed in the reporting of this study. The findings show that some municipalities did not have a training or preparation course in place, and guided the HHNs to refer to self-education material. The HHNs emphasised the importance of continuously updating their knowledge and skills through regular training. Alongside a globalized world and a demographic shift in Sweden, future nurses must provide globally significant nursing care based on relevant knowledges and skills. To contribute to the global nursing discourse, this article aims to describe the process undertaken in developing and implementing a global nursing approach and curriculum in the Swedish Red Cross undergraduate nursing program. A comprehensive process of educational change was carried out, targeting both faculty and students with various academic activities. The new global-oriented curriculum was evaluated positively by nursing students, and a definition of global nursing was disseminated among educators. Nursing students at the Swedish Red Cross University College are now encouraged to advocate for vulnerable persons in need of healthcare services and to counteract inequalities and social injustice in sustainable ways. The importance of consulting children in health care situations is acknowledged but not always put into action. Health care professionals have difficulties with facilitating children's participation and children are not pleased with their amount of involvement. The aim of this study was to explore health care professionals' reflections on being in care situations with children. A qualitative design with workshops and content analysis was used. The participants (n=29) represented various health care professions. The findings show that health care professionals understand being in care situations with children as an ambiguous challenge since each situation depends on the participants involved: the child, the parents and the professionals. The findings can be used for integrating theory and practice to broaden professionals' awareness of the child's perspective in care situations. Priorities and allocation are complex tasks in health care. Unspoken and also often unconscious priorities frequently occur. Research concerning how registered nurses (RN) priorities are limited. The aim of this study was to illuminate the meanings of RNs’ lived experiences of priorities in surgery care. Narrative interviews were conducted with 10 RNs working in a department of surgery. The RNs interviewed had all worked for more than 5 years as RNs. A phenomenological-hermeneutic interpretation of the interviews was conducted. The findings revealed 3 themes: making a conscious allocation and priorities of care, doing unreflected good, and being qualified to determine. The RNs did not often comprehend their actions as prioritizing. They more often comprehended their nursing tasks as obvious and did not consider this as priorities. But in situations of ethical difficulty, the RNs reflected upon their priority and actions. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

We set out to assess the processes by which a personal empowerment-oriented intervention based on learning spaces and the Rahyab problem-solving model can help newly married women in Iran to gain more control over their life situations. Learning to use the problem-solving model independently was an important component of this seven months’ educational program. A descriptive field study design based on qualitative methods was employed for data collection and analysis. The analysis of these processes showed how, through group and individual interventions, these women could influence their intimate relationships by altering their thoughts, their management of emotions, and their overt behavior. The author discusses the effects of conceptualizing health, illness and family nursing as relationship issues on the transformation of the family nursing practice, education and research. The nurse is described to be capable of building a therapeutic relationship with the family through interventions to create a context for change. The importance of the first few seconds of a nurse-family encounter is emphasized. The author calls for an understanding of family nursing by stressing the building, sustaining, and studying the nurse-family relationship.
