Food pantries are responsible for the direct distribution of food to low-income households. While food pantries may be concerned about the nutritional quality of the food they are serving, they may have limited resources to adopt and implement nutrition policies to support efforts to promote high nutritional quality of the food served. Guided by the RE-AIM (Reach, Effectiveness or Efficacy, Adoption, Implementation, Maintenance) framework, this qualitative study explored the degree of implementation of nutrition policies at food pantries, as well as the barriers to implementation in those pantries that had not adopted a nutrition policy. Semistructured interviews were conducted with 10 food pantry directors: seven pantries with a formal nutrition policy and three with an informal nutrition policy. Using a thematic analysis method, results demonstrated themes from the interviews with policy-adopting pantries to be barriers, enforcement, delivery of the policy, unexpected consequences, and fidelity to the policy. A targeted intervention that builds on this research and focuses on building the capacity of food pantries to develop, adopt, and implement nutrition policies as well as helping to increase fidelity to the policy would be beneficial to continue to improve the food donated and distributed at food pantries. By supporting food pantries in the development, adoption, and implementation of nutrition policies, researchers can play an important role in improving the quality of food in the emergency food network. Participants were 5,831 women in their third trimester of pregnancy, part of a large, longitudinal, pre-birth national cohort study. Women reported on their experience of pushing and shoving, throwing or breaking objects within their relationship over the past month. Univariable regression models examined the association of a large number of potential risk and protective factors. Those significant at the univariable level were carried forward into final multivariable analyses, stratified by New Zealand's four main ethnic groups: European, Māori, Pacific, and Asian peoples. In addition to the emotion work that occurs in families, I theorize that adult children also engage in comfort work with their parents, navigations, and strategies to reduce the discomfort of parents with their adult children's lives. This study analyzes how gay and lesbian adults navigate the participation of their parents at events run by lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) clubs or "krewes" in the Gulf South during Carnival season. I conducted over 50 days of ethnographic fieldwork during Mardi Gras events and 26 interviews with gay and lesbian members of krewes in Mobile, Alabama, and Baton Rouge, Louisiana. I argue that gay and lesbian adults negotiate their parents' attendance in gay spaces by comfort work, mostly by creating comfort for their parents and managing disreputability through education. Ultimately, I conclude that parents' attendance at LGBTQ events results in supportive reciprocation, "payoffs" of acceptance that are rich in emotional and symbolic significance for adult children. Humans and animals share a unique bond. Professionals are capitalizing on the human–animal bond by incorporating animals into therapy, forensic interviews, and the courtroom. However, the mnemonic consequence for including dogs in forensic interviews has not been empirically evaluated. In the current study, we examined whether the use of dogs increases the quantity of verbal reports for emotional events. Undergraduate participants were randomly assigned to dog or no dog conditions. Participants were interviewed about positive experienced events and negative experienced events. All interviews were audio recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed for quantity of new information. Participants shared more new information in negative event reports with a dog present than with no dog present. There were no significant differences in the quantity of information disclosed for positive event memories between dog conditions. Canine-assisted interviews may provide comfort to people, resulting in more elaborative autobiographical reports about negative stressful events. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Young peoples' acceptance and use of nontraditional, descriptive identity labels (e.g., pansexual, genderqueer) require nurses to consider moving beyond use of traditional terms (e.g., gay, transgender). This mixed methods study explores (a) labels used by sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) minority youth, (b) their expressed importance and meaning of these labels, and (c) differences in label usage. Sixty-six SOGI minority adolescents in British Columbia, Minnesota, and Massachusetts (mean age = 16.6) participated in "go-along" interviews; during interviews, 42 (63.6%) commented on labels. Chi-square and t tests were used to compare traditional versus nontraditional labels across participant demographic categories. Inductive thematic analysis was used to identify representative themes. Approximately, 1/3 of participants used nontraditional sexual orientation identity labels; this finding was associated with a trans identity and nontraditional gender labels. Using terminology that is meaningful and representative to the youth themselves has potential to facilitate representative research and welcoming environments in practice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This 2-year study investigated the accommodations and support services preferred by college students with autism spectrum disorder using sequential mixed methods non-experimental survey and semi-structured follow-up interviews. Students with autism spectrum disorder reported using both academic and non-academic supports with frequency (e.g. extended time on exams, transition program), using academic supports in line with other disability populations, and using non-academic supports connecting them one-to-one with a faculty member or coach as preferred (e.g. academic coach, counselor, faculty mentor). Findings suggest a need for university disability service centers, counseling services, and faculty to work together to develop systematic support systems for college students with autism spectrum disorder. Primary care providers are well positioned to address the sexual and reproductive health (SRH) needs of adolescents; however, gaps often exist in the delivery of quality SRH services in primary care. Our objective was to identify specific opportunities to improve the delivery of adolescent SRH services in primary care. We conducted in-depth interviews with 25 primary care providers from various disciplines across rural and urban areas of Minnesota and conducted thematic analysis of transcribed data. Participants identified salient opportunities in three areas: (1) training and resources for providers (e.g., related to minor consent laws or addressing sensitive subjects), (2) practices and procedures (e.g., time-alone procedures and policies for confidential screening and sharing test results), and (3) education for adolescents (e.g., knowing their rights and accessing confidential SRH services). Understanding college students' perceptions of parental support and its impact on student adjustment have important implications for maximizing retention rates within higher education institutions. College students (N = 53) participated in qualitative interviews focused on students' perceptions of mothers' and fathers' support during college and its impact on college adjustment. Holistic coding interviews indicated three different classifications of parents based on levels of support: supportive, ambivalent, and unsupportive. Students indicated that their parents continued to be the main source of support and a key factor that supports their adjustment during the college years. In contrast, students who did not receive such support expressed having difficulties continuing working toward their degree. Students' narratives also indicated that mothers and fathers provided support in different ways. These findings have important implications for practice, and in particular how high education institutions can promote adjustment and retention rates by encouraging parental engagement. This study examined how maximizing and minimizing responses to positive events were associated with sustained positive feelings about the events and adjustment in a community sample of 56 young adolescents (31 boys and 25 girls, 10-14 years of age). On daily reports, adolescents reported their positive emotional reactions to their best event each day. A week later, they reported their responses to their most intense positive event across the 4 days. Parents and adolescents reported on adolescents’ adjustment. The results indicated that maximizing responses were related to more intense feelings about the events 1 week later. Minimizing responses were associated with internalizing and externalizing behaviors over and above coping with negative events. The findings indicated that adolescents can maximize or capitalize on positive events but that minimizing is linked to poorer adjustment. The article discusses a study which examined ethical, legal, and social implications (ESLI) issues that arose during the Human Microbiome Proejct (HMP). Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with HMP investigators and National Institutes of Health (NIH) employees. Three major ESLI issues were identified are informed consent, data sharing, and return of results.

Objectives. Older adults are considered more vulnerable to foodborne illness due to lowered immune function. We compared the food safety perceptions and practices of older and younger adults and determined associations with demographic characteristics. Methods. We focused on 1,317 participants &60 years of age from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's 2006 Food Safety Survey, a telephone survey of a nationally representative sample of American consumers. We used data on participants <60 years of age to compare younger and older adults, and used Pearson's Chi-square tests to determine whether perceptions and practices differed by age, gender, level of education, living arrangement, and race/ethnicity. We conducted multiple logistic regression analysis to assess relationships of demographic characteristics and food safety perceptions with food safety practices of older adults. Results. We found that adults s60 years of age were more likely to follow recommended food safety practices than those <60 years of age. Sixty-six percent of adults s60 years of age reported eating potentially hazardous foods in the past year compared with 81% of adults <60 years of age. Among people >60 years of age, women, those with less education, and nonwhite individuals generally had better food safety practices and a greater awareness of food safety risk. Conclusions. These findings suggest that certain subsets of the older adult population are less likely to follow recommended food safety practices and, thus,.are at greater risk of foodborne illness. Evidence suggests that installing a classroom management system known as the Color Wheel reduced inappropriate behaviors and increased on-task behavior in second- and fourth-grade classrooms; however, no systematic studies of the Color Wheel had been disseminated targeting pre-school or kindergarten participants. To enhance our understanding of the Color Wheel System (CWS) as a prevention system, a multiple-baseline design was used to evaluate the effects of the Color Wheel on inappropriate vocalizations (IVs) in three general education kindergarten classrooms. Partial-interval time-sampling was used to record classwide IVs, which were operationally defined as any comment or vocal noise that was not solicited by the teacher. Time series graphs and effect size calculations suggest that the CWS caused immediate, large, and sustained decreases in IVs across the three classrooms. Teacher acceptability and interview data also supported the CWS. Implications related to prevention are discussed and directions for future research are provided. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

There are socioeconomic and racial/ethnic health disparities that warrant policy change to advance health equity. The purpose of this qualitative study was to elucidate primary activities and/or tangible characteristics that indicate that a policy advocacy campaign has an embedded health equity focus. Researchers interviewed policy advocacy experts (n = 13) and campaign leaders (n = 9), transcribed audio recordings of interviews, and conducted a thematic analysis to examine health-equity-related processes within policy campaigns. Based on experiences of policy advocacy experts and campaign leaders, mostly within the Voices for Healthy Kids initiative, several objective aspects and activities were identified that indicate that a policy campaign, and the coalition that conducts the campaign, has an embedded health equity focus. It should be stressed that these activities are not intended to represent the extent of all campaign activities, only the subset of activities and aspects of a campaign that indicate a health equity orientation. Broadly, aspects identified were related to what had the campaign done to engage with the community, who in the community was providing input about direction of the campaign, and how had that community input been used. Authentic Community engagement was seen as the foundation of a campaign's health equity focus. A model synthesizing these findings is included in the results. A major strength of this study is that factors associated with health equity in campaign functioning are not typically assessed. These findings support identification of associated constructs to inform measurement development, and can help guide organizations, campaigns, and researchers working to advance health equity. Diet-related chronic disease remains a public health concern, and low intake of fruits and vegetables disproportionately affects low-income populations. Healthy food incentive (HFI) projects can help close the nutrition gap among low-income populations by increasing purchasing power and access to fruits and vegetables. This study aimed to qualitatively explore lessons learned and best practices from Food Insecurity Nutrition Incentive Grant Program (FINI) grantees across the United States. Thirty semistructured interviews were conducted with FINI grantees and stakeholders in 2018, eliciting best practices and promising findings, policy implications, and knowledge gaps and opportunities to pursue that inform program refinement and sustainability. Telephone and in-person interviews were conducted with FINI grant recipients from 2015 to 2016, specifically, recipients of FINI-funded multiyear community-based projects and large-scale projects. Our results highlighted (1) range of projects and scope, (2) program promotion and awareness, (3) community-based partnerships, (4) technical assistance and peer interactions, (5) measurement and evaluation, (6) program challenges, and (7) future directions and recommendations. Grantees reported a "trifecta of benefits" that affects low-income consumers, farmers, and food retailers. Our findings contribute to understanding how to implement HFI programs in a variety of settings and highlight the variations that can exist between programs, as well as the need for increased technical assistance and synergy between programs (communities of practice). The purpose of the current study is to contribute to the knowledge base on the use of family education and support (FES) services by examining the longitudinal trajectories of FES receipt and multiple domains of child and family functioning. Using an extant data set of more than 9,000 youth and their caregivers, results indicate that families who received FES on entry into services had greater caregiver strain, and their children experienced greater emotional challenges than families who did not receive FES services. Furthermore, for families who received FES, the longitudinal results revealed an immediate effect of seeking additional services, decreasing caregiver strain 6 months after receipt of FES services, and improving child emotional functioning 6 to 18 months after initial receipt of FES services. The complex, lagged effects in the results are discussed in the context of the theorized cyclical course of family stress as exemplified by the Double ABCX model of adjustment and adaptation. Implications for future research of FES services are discussed, especially the need to develop a functional logic model and an operational definition of FES and its components. Qualitative responses by caregivers (n = 203) and youth (aged 8 and older; n = 65) about their experiences with sexual abuse investigations were analyzed in conjunction with quantitative ratings of satisfaction. Respondents described mostly high levels of satisfaction, although dissatisfaction was reported with some key aspects of investigations. The features cited as worse than expected by caregivers were the investigators' commitment to prosecuting the alleged offender and the absence of clear and regular communication about the status of the case. The features mentioned most often by caregivers as better than expected were the emotional support and interviewing skills of investigators. Youth focused both praise and criticism on investigators' interviewing skills. There were relatively few complaints by either caregivers or youth about the duration of the investigation, medical exams, lack of services, or failures of interagency communication, areas of considerable reform in the past several decades.
