Produce prescription programs within clinical care settings can address food insecurity by offering financial incentives through "prescriptions" for fruits and vegetables to eligible patients. The electronic health record (EHR) holds potential as a strategy to examine the relationship between these projects and participant outcomes, but no studies address EHR extraction for programmatic evaluations. We interviewed representatives of 9 grantees of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Gus Schumacher Nutrition Incentive Grant Program's Produce Prescription Projects (GusNIP PPR) to understand their experiences with and capacity for utilizing EHR for evaluation. Five grantees planned to use EHR data, with 3 main strategies: reporting aggregate data from health clinics, contracting with external/third party evaluators, and accessing individual-level data. However, utilizing EHRs was prohibitive for others due to insufficient knowledge, training and/or staff capacity; lack of familiarity with the Institutional Review Board process; or was inappropriate for select target populations. Policy support for produce prescription programs requires a robust evidence base, deep knowledge of best practices, and an understanding of expected health outcomes. These insights can be most efficiently and meaningfully achieved with EHR data, which will require increased financial support and technical assistance for project operators. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Research on enacted stigma, or stigma- and bias-based victimization, including bullying and harassment, among lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) youth often focuses on one context (e.g., school) or one form (e.g., bullying or microaggressions), which limits our understanding of these experiences. We conducted qualitative go-along interviews with 66 LGBTQ adolescents (14–19 years) in urban, suburban, town, and rural locations in the United States and Canada identified through purposive and snowball sampling. Forty-six participants (70%) described at least one instance of enacted stigma. Three primary themes emerged: (1) enacted stigma occurred in many contexts; (2) enacted stigma restricted movement; and (3) second-hand accounts of enacted stigma shaped perceptions of safety. Efforts to improve well-being among LGBTQ youth must address the diverse forms and contexts of enacted stigma that youth experience, which limit freedom of movement and potential access to opportunities that encourage positive youth development. School nurses can play a critical role in reducing enacted stigma in schools and in collaboration with community partners. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Diet-related chronic disease remains a public health concern, and low intake of fruits and vegetables disproportionately affects low-income populations. Healthy food incentive (HFI) projects can help close the nutrition gap among low-income populations by increasing purchasing power and access to fruits and vegetables. This study aimed to qualitatively explore lessons learned and best practices from Food Insecurity Nutrition Incentive Grant Program (FINI) grantees across the United States. Thirty semistructured interviews were conducted with FINI grantees and stakeholders in 2018, eliciting best practices and promising findings, policy implications, and knowledge gaps and opportunities to pursue that inform program refinement and sustainability. Telephone and in-person interviews were conducted with FINI grant recipients from 2015 to 2016, specifically, recipients of FINI-funded multiyear community-based projects and large-scale projects. Our results highlighted (1) range of projects and scope, (2) program promotion and awareness, (3) community-based partnerships, (4) technical assistance and peer interactions, (5) measurement and evaluation, (6) program challenges, and (7) future directions and recommendations. Grantees reported a "trifecta of benefits" that affects low-income consumers, farmers, and food retailers. Our findings contribute to understanding how to implement HFI programs in a variety of settings and highlight the variations that can exist between programs, as well as the need for increased technical assistance and synergy between programs (communities of practice). Young peoples' acceptance and use of nontraditional, descriptive identity labels (e.g., pansexual, genderqueer) require nurses to consider moving beyond use of traditional terms (e.g., gay, transgender). This mixed methods study explores (a) labels used by sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) minority youth, (b) their expressed importance and meaning of these labels, and (c) differences in label usage. Sixty-six SOGI minority adolescents in British Columbia, Minnesota, and Massachusetts (mean age = 16.6) participated in "go-along" interviews; during interviews, 42 (63.6%) commented on labels. Chi-square and t tests were used to compare traditional versus nontraditional labels across participant demographic categories. Inductive thematic analysis was used to identify representative themes. Approximately, 1/3 of participants used nontraditional sexual orientation identity labels; this finding was associated with a trans identity and nontraditional gender labels. Using terminology that is meaningful and representative to the youth themselves has potential to facilitate representative research and welcoming environments in practice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Evidence suggests that installing a classroom management system known as the Color Wheel reduced inappropriate behaviors and increased on-task behavior in second- and fourth-grade classrooms; however, no systematic studies of the Color Wheel had been disseminated targeting pre-school or kindergarten participants. To enhance our understanding of the Color Wheel System (CWS) as a prevention system, a multiple-baseline design was used to evaluate the effects of the Color Wheel on inappropriate vocalizations (IVs) in three general education kindergarten classrooms. Partial-interval time-sampling was used to record classwide IVs, which were operationally defined as any comment or vocal noise that was not solicited by the teacher. Time series graphs and effect size calculations suggest that the CWS caused immediate, large, and sustained decreases in IVs across the three classrooms. Teacher acceptability and interview data also supported the CWS. Implications related to prevention are discussed and directions for future research are provided. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article discusses a study which examined ethical, legal, and social implications (ESLI) issues that arose during the Human Microbiome Proejct (HMP). Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with HMP investigators and National Institutes of Health (NIH) employees. Three major ESLI issues were identified are informed consent, data sharing, and return of results.

Objectives. Older adults are considered more vulnerable to foodborne illness due to lowered immune function. We compared the food safety perceptions and practices of older and younger adults and determined associations with demographic characteristics. Methods. We focused on 1,317 participants &60 years of age from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's 2006 Food Safety Survey, a telephone survey of a nationally representative sample of American consumers. We used data on participants <60 years of age to compare younger and older adults, and used Pearson's Chi-square tests to determine whether perceptions and practices differed by age, gender, level of education, living arrangement, and race/ethnicity. We conducted multiple logistic regression analysis to assess relationships of demographic characteristics and food safety perceptions with food safety practices of older adults. Results. We found that adults s60 years of age were more likely to follow recommended food safety practices than those <60 years of age. Sixty-six percent of adults s60 years of age reported eating potentially hazardous foods in the past year compared with 81% of adults <60 years of age. Among people >60 years of age, women, those with less education, and nonwhite individuals generally had better food safety practices and a greater awareness of food safety risk. Conclusions. These findings suggest that certain subsets of the older adult population are less likely to follow recommended food safety practices and, thus,.are at greater risk of foodborne illness.
