Objectives: ACL reconstruction is one of the most common knee procedures performed annually in the United States. Athletes participating in cutting and pivoting sports are at high risk for ACL injury. In the general population, most graft choices including allograft, bone-patellar tendon-bone (BTB) autograft, hamstring autograft and quadriceps autograft have all been shown to excellent results following reconstruction. However, in the high-level cutting and pivoting athlete, the optimal graft for reconstruction remains controversial. Most consider BTB autograft to be the gold standard for such athletes. However, BTB autografts have drawbacks including anterior knee pain, difficulty kneeling and possible patellar fracture and patellar tendon rupture. Quadriceps autograft has increased in popularity since it offers a thicker graft with more favorable tensile properties compared to BTB and hamstring autografts. The quadriceps autograft has nearly twice the cross sectional area, higher load to failure and greater stiffness than the BTB autograft. Studies have shown equivalent outcomes when directly comparing BTB autograft vs. soft tissue quadriceps autograft in the general population. No studies have directly compared these two grafts in athletes participating in cutting and pivoting sports. We hypothesized that the quadriceps autograft would lead to similar patient outcomes, re-tear rates, return to sport and complications as BTB autografts in the cutting and pivoting athlete. Methods: A retrospective review of cutting and pivoting athletes with ACL tears treated with BTB autograft or soft tissue quadriceps autograft with at least 2 years of follow up was performed. Only athletes participating in cutting and pivoting sports were included in the study. Four sports were considered to be cutting and pivoting including soccer, football, lacrosse and basketball. The decision on which graft to use was based on the athlete's choice after discussing the pros and cons of each graft. Exclusion criteria included those athletes with recurrent ACL tears, multiligamentous injuries, previous meniscal surgery and those requiring osteotomies. International Knee Documentation Committee Subjective Knee Evaluation (IKDC) and Lysholm knee scoring scale were used to evaluate patient reported outcomes. Through chart review, ability to return to sport, time to return to sport and complications were identified. The postoperative rehabilitation protocol for both grafts was identical. Results: There were 32 athletes in the soft tissue quadriceps autograft group and 36 in the BTB autograft group. The average age was 18.6 years for the quad group and 19.7 years for the BTB autograft group (p=0.63). Females made up 62.5% of the quadriceps group and 44.4% of the BTB group (p=0.14). The quad group was made up of 56.3% high school and 43.7% college athletes compared to 61.1% high school and 38.9% college athletes in the BTB autograft group (p=0.53). Soccer was the most common sport with 16 in the quad group and 14 in the BTB group. The rest of the quad group included 8 football players, 4 lacrosse and 4 basketball players. The remaining BTB group consisted of 12 football players, 8 lacrosse and 2 basketball players. Meniscal surgery was performed in combination with the ACL reconstruction in 17 (53.1%) of the quad group and 22 (61.1%) of the BTB autograft group (p=0.37). Average graft size was 9.5mm for the quad autograft group and 10 for the BTB autograft group. The 2-year IKDC score was 93.6 for the quad group and 95.1 for the BTB group (p=0.45). The 2 year Lysholm scores were 95.7 and 96.1 for the quad and BTB groups respectively. Return to play at the same or higher level was 90.6% in the quad group and 86.1% in the BTB autograft group (p=0.82). Time to return was also similar between the groups with 7.1 months for the quad group and 7.6 months for the BTB autograft group. There was 1 re-tear which required revision in the BTB group and no re-tears in the quad group (p=0.34). Arthrofibrosis requiring MUA and lysis of adhesions occurred in 2 quad autografts and 4 BTB autografts (p=0.49). One contralateral ACL rupture occurred in the quad autograft group and 4 in the BTB autograft group (p=0.21). Conclusions: The optimal ACL graft in high level athletes participating in cutting and pivoting sports remains in question. In our comparison of quadriceps autograft compared to BTB autograft in this athletic population, no difference in patient reported outcomes, return to sport or re-tear rates was identified. Based on these findings, quadriceps autograft is as effective as BTB autografts in cutting and pivoting athletes and should be part of the graft choice discussion with the athlete. This symposium features three papers that investigate various aspects of government spending. The papers also share common ground in the considerable attention paid by each to international issues. Beyond that, the papers are quite different. They vary considerably in the mix of theory and empirical evidence as well as in the specific aspects of government spending that are investigated. The paper by Darrel Cohen utilizes techniques from the spectral analysis of time series to characterize seasonal, cyclical, and long-run properties of various measures of U.S. government spending; in addition, spectral techniques are combined with an intertemporal optimizing model of a representative consumer to shed light on the issues of the degree of direct substitution between government and private consumption spending in each of twelve major economies. The paper by Louise Sheiner uses cross-country data to address the question of whether conventional projections of a country's future health care expenditures are based on a faulty assumption that relative health spending by age remains constant. This paper is quite topical given impending demographic changes and related projected impacts on government outlays on health and retirement programs in many countries. The paper by Michele Cavallo develops a theoretical model and utilizes a calibration exercise to examine the effects on the current account balance of changes to different types of government spending, in particular expenditures on goods and expenditures on hours worked. The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act of 2021 (P.L 177-58) authorized some $1.2 trillion to invest in infrastructure in the United States. The largest infrastructure investment in a generation, the bill combined funds for traditional infrastructure (roads, bridges, water, ports, etc.) with money for broadband internet, electric vehicle charging, clean energy, and other uses. However, only a small portion of the funds are available to address redundant, abandoned, idled, or neglected (RAIN) infrastructure. This article presents the broader issues associated with RAIN infrastructure, (i.e., costs and equity) and introduces the papers that comprise the RAIN symposium. We conclude that there is a significant need for further scholarly and policy attention within the U.S. and elsewhere, so that the myriad of issues relating to existing infrastructure may be adequately addressed. The article presents abstracts of various papers related to marketing presented at the 12th Conference on Historical Analysis & Research in Marketing that was held during April 28-May 1, 2005 in Long Beach, California. The paper "Pansies to Parents: Gay Male Images in American Print Advertising," states that the increasingly common and diverse depiction of gay men in American print advertising is a recent phenomenon, dating from the mid-1990s. However, gay male images have appeared in print advertisements since early in the last century. Using a framework categorizing minority depictions in media over time and adapted for this study, a chronological series of twenty-two print advertisements are presented and analyzed dating from 1917 through 2004. Another paper "Historical Perspectives on Firm-Based Pricing Research in Marketing: 1915-2004," states that pricing is a singular concept in marketing and in management science. Actually, pricing's legitimacy in marketing has long been relative. For decades, pricing studies relied on the strong theoretical frameworks proposed by economics and mathematics on one side and by psychology and sociology on the other.

This article cites a study, which deals with the scientific communication associated with the 1968 Annual Meeting of the American Educational Research Association (AERA). The study reported here is the first in this series for educational research. Presentations at the 1968 annual meeting of AERA constituted a set of core events in relation to which communication was assessed. Three groups of persons having contact with these presentations were included in the study: authors, those who made presentations at the meeting; attendants, those who heard these presentations; and requesters, those who requested copies of the presentations from the authors. All 349 authors who presented papers were sent questionnaires. The questionnaire concerned the inception, nature, and previous as well as planned dissemination of the work they reported; the authors' current activities in those subject areas discussed in their presentations; and the effect upon these activities of scientific information exchanged at the meeting. The study assessed: how much of the program material had been submitted for journal publication during the ensuing year; which journals had been selected; and how many authors had neither submitted nor planned to submit manuscripts to journals based on their meeting presentations.

CONFERENCES & conventions ,SOCIOLOGY ,ANNUAL meetings ,MEMBERSHIP - Abstract
The article presents several official reports and proceedings of various societies of the U.S., published in the December 1940 issue of the journal "American Sociological Review." The report of the "American Sociological Society," provides a very good answer to the question of what is possible in the way of making a living by taking sociology. The census of membership has revealed that sociologists who are members of the Society are employed in nearly 250 different types of occupations. Alfred McClung Lee, chairman of "Committee on Public Relations," is anxious that all papers to be given at the annual meetings should be in his hands. The Committee needs these papers early in order to aid newsmen in the proper selection and presentation of material and thus lessen the danger that the society and persons on the program may be presented to the public in a bad light because of hasty, ill-considered or out-of-context reporting. The press is only too happy to cooperate in this matter, but it cannot be done to the best advantage unless the Committee can get copies of the papers early. Every paper read at annual meetings becomes the property of the society, chairmen of divisions and sections should so inform the participants on their programs and collect and turn over to the secretary or editor all papers presented.

The papers included in this symposium provide a compelling rationale for the role of health as an engine of economic growth, and thus for investing in health improvement as an important step in improving economic growth in the Mississippi Delta. This newer model of the relation between health and wealth, positioning health as an investment and as an important determinant of economic growth, has substantial implications for health-related public policy and for the business sector. Societal support of health promoting initiatives through public policy, especially for children and for the poor, are important efforts for improving health and for realizing the economic benefits of health improvement. The article discusses about labor movement emerging in the twenty-first century in the U.S. The author here has highlighted the need for American unions to organize the massive numbers of unorganized workers. But what sections of workers shall represented this class remains as a debate. No agreement has been reached as to which strategies are most effective to organize which workers. Nor is there a clear understanding of what it takes to move beyond the initial certification election or recognition campaign to build lasting, vital unions in these newly organized workplaces. In hostile organizing climate, unions only succeed in organising when they run aggressive grassroots campaigns, with an emphasis on developing active leadership. Due to this many newly organized workers come into the labor market armed with leadership skills. The challenge for the American labor movement is to nurture and develop these new leaders So that they can assist in the effort to rebuild and revitalize their unions. The University and College Labor Education Association (UCLEA) and the AFL-CIO Education Department has called for a joint annual conference to be held in San Jose, California. The stated goal of the conference was to bring together union and university labor educators, researchers, and activists who are committed to revitalizing and strengthening the labor movement through developing rank and-file leadership for the long haul.

Background: Social media is increasingly used in surgery, facilitating the dissemination of knowledge. Social media can potentially aid networking, education, and information exchange. This study explored the impact of tweet components and tweeter characteristics during a large surgical congress to inform recommendations for optimizing social media use at future surgical conferences. Methods: Twitter activity was monitored during the American College of Surgeons Clinical Congress 2018 using NodeXL to extract tweets containing the conference hashtag #ACSCC18 (or #ACSCC2018). Multivariable logistic regression analysis was performed to identify independent predictors of retweet activity, also testing for multicollinearity and interactions among variables. Results: There were 4386 tweets that contained #ACSCC18 (or #ACSCC2018) posted from 1023 Twitter accounts. A larger group of Twitter accounts just retweeted. Other Twitter accounts with a stake in the conference neither tweeted nor retweeted. In a multivariable analysis of original tweets, the following were all independently associated with retweets, in decreasing order of effect size: mention of other tweeters, multimedia, inclusion of other hashtags, and the number of followers. In contrast with other conferences, the inclusion of a weblink (URL)-for example, link to paper or blog-was not associated with retweets.Discussion: This study helps understand social media impact at surgical conferences. Engage by tweeting and retweeting. Mention other tweeters, add multimedia, include congress hashtags and topic-specific hashtags, and build your followers. Although not associated with retweet activity in this study, the inclusion of URLs can still contribute in substantiating the disseminated content based on findings at other conferences. Background: Research in the form of poster and podium abstracts is disseminated at subspecialty society meetings. The quality of this research can be defined by exploring the ultimate publication rate of the presented abstracts. Purpose: To investigate (1) the manuscript publication rate of abstracts presented at the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) annual meeting; (2) whether abstract format (poster vs podium) influences overall or 2-year publication rates and time to publication; (3) the abstract factors that are associated with increased publication rate; and (4) whether publication quality as measured by journal of publication, level of evidence (LOE), and number of citations differs between posters and podiums. Study Design: Cross-sectional study. Methods: Poster and podium abstracts that were presented at the AOSSM annual meetings between January 1, 2016, and December 31, 2019, were included. The PubMed and GoogleScholar databases were searched by abstract title and authors to determine whether the related manuscript had been published. For published manuscripts, the journal, journal impact factor (IF), time to publication, authors, and LOE were recorded. Results: The manuscripts of 664 abstracts (341 poster, 323 podium presentations) were published during the study period. The overall publication rate was 52.4%. Publication within 2 years of the meeting was found to be higher in podium abstracts (45.8%) compared with poster abstracts (37.8%) (P =.0366). Podium abstracts had a shorter time to publication (P <.001), higher LOE (P =.0166), more citations (P <.0001), and were published in higher IF journals (P =.0028). Poster presentations were more likely to undergo a change in first author between the time of the conference and future publication (P =.0300). The most common journal of publication was the American Journal of Sports Medicine (36.8%). Conclusion: Abstracts presented at the AOSSM annual meeting had a high rate of publication within 2 years. There was no difference in publication rates between podium and poster abstracts, but podium abstracts had a shorter time to publication and more future citations and were published in journals with higher IFs. The article reports about plans for the Fifth World Congress of Sociology, sponsored by the International Sociological Association, to be held in Washington D.C. between September 2 and 8, 1962. The major topics to be discussed are, "Sociologists, Policy Makers and the Public," "The Sociology of Development," "The Nature and Problems of Sociological Theory." The general plan is to have the main paper on each of the three major themes published in advance in two volumes of the "Transactions." The World Congress will follow immediately upon the meetings of the American Sociological Association and will also be held in the Shoreham. Two generous grants have been made in support of the Congress, one of $50,000 from the ACLS-SSRC Committee administrating a Ford Foundation grant, and one of $25,000 from the National Science Foundation. These monies will be largely used to defray the travel cost of foreign scholars who are preparing papers. It has been hoped that the presence of scholars from abroad may be facilitated teaching opportunities in American universities either before or after the Congress.

The cooperation given to the Public Relations Committee in connection with the thirty-fourth annual convention at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by the representatives of newspapers and press agencies was even greater than the year before and in equally good taste. News stories, signed articles and editorials appeared in newspapers and newsmagazines from coast to coast. The Philadelphia newspapers alone (Bulletin, Inquirer, Public Ledger, Record, and News) carried 43 separate news stories, feature articles and signed and unsigned editorials. Six pictures were used to illustrate news stories. Special Columns (signed editorials) were written on various aspects of the convention by Harry Elmer Barnes, New York World-Telegram and other papers; Boake Carter, Nashville Times, New York Mirror, Boston Evening Globe, Hartford Times, etc.; Joel Sayre, Philadelphia Public Ledger, etc.; and Bentley Stegner, Cincinnati Enquirer.

This paper places broadcast major party convention ratings in the broader context of the changing media environment from 1976 until 2008 in order to explore the decline in audience for the convention. Broadcast convention ratings are contrasted with convention ratings for cable news networks, ratings for broadcast entertainment programming, and ratings for "event" programming. Relative to audiences for other kinds of programming, convention audiences remain large, suggesting that profit-making criteria may have distorted representations of the convention audience and views of whether airing the convention remains worthwhile. The War on Terror, created by the Bush administration in the wake of 9/11, has brought about changes in domestic intelligence and protest policing that have proven hard to conclusively identify, track, and explain despite the importance of these changes to research on the repression of social movements. This paper argues that a second important trend has also been part of the War on Terror: increasing government secrecy regarding its protest control and anti-terrorism programs. Using battles over access to information on NYPD's and the City of New York's planning for, and execution of, protest control strategies at the 2004 Republican National Convention, this article examines how information secrecy operates by using fears of terrorism as a veil and examines the collateral damage to academic inquiry, and therefore also to public dialogue and debate, created by increasing government secrecy. SCHOLARS ,RESEARCH grants ,SOCIAL science scholarships ,CONFERENCES & conventions ,MANAGEMENT committees ,STUDENTS ,SOCIETIES - Abstract
The article presents information about plans of the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) this year. Two items may be of prime interest in this year's council affairs. The highlight of the annual meeting was a paper by George Homans on the relationship between the social sciences and the humanities. It was generally felt that this session did much to create a better understanding between these two sectors of the academic community. The ACLS Committee on the Secondary Schools has commissioned background papers from scholars in each of the disciplines and areas concerned with the teaching of social studies, and the paper on sociology is being written by Gresham Sykes. Grant and fellowship programs of interest to members of the Association are intended primarily to provide uninterrupted free time for scholarly activity. Travel Grants to international congresses and conferences are presently available only for meetings to be held after July 11, 1962. Since the ACLS will rely upon the Association for recommendations for all congresses and conferences which are primarily sociological in nature, inquiries of this nature should be addressed to the executive office.

50. REPORT OF THE MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE.
- Subjects
ASSOCIATIONS, institutions, etc. ,MANAGEMENT committees ,MEETINGS ,MARKETS & society ,CONFERENCES & conventions - Abstract
The report of the membership committee of the American Sociological Society as of December 1950 is divided into two parts first, a record of organization and operations since the annual meeting in New York last December. Second, policy considerations calling for directives. The work of the committee was organized around three points. The planning and direction was centralized in a headquarters committee consisting of the chairman and the executive office of the society in New York. The implementation, including extensive correspondence and clerical work, was performed by the staff of the national office. National coverage was provided by a field committee consisting of regional and state members of the membership committee and committee representatives appointed for the larger institutions. More than anything else, the effectiveness of this work is due to the cooperative and efficient implementation of plans by the executive officer and the staff of the national office. In the field twenty-five members of the society served to promote the program regionally and more than one hundred institutional representatives combed the larger local markets. The response of these field members and representatives was frequently excellent and indicates the extent of the society's resources in this and other matters when adequate directives and materials are provided centrally.
