In a quest for economies of scale, access to technologies, and, most importantly, expansion of market share, Chinese public companies have been engaged in several consecutive waves of mergers and acquisitions (M&As) involving mostly domestically domiciled non-listed targets from the same or adjacent industries. Relying on a comprehensive panel dataset of 7,998 transactions completed between 1993 and 2020 by 2,842 publicly listed acquirers domiciled in China, the paper attempts to establish whether M&A deals allow acquirers to improve their market share and, consequently, their relative market position. We use dynamic panel regression and ordered logit models to establish and quantify the link between deal characteristics and the post-deal market share of the combined entities. Our empirical findings demonstrate that corporate consolidations exercise no significant impact on the relative competitive positioning of firms. Only acquisitions by industry leaders produce a sizeable increase in the latter's market share and lead to higher industry concentration. Most consolidations occur among outsiders exhibiting a high degree of similarity, relatively lower profitability, and stagnant market shares within the more competitive industries with higher rates of firm creation. These consolidations, often in the form of mergers, are not effective in advancing the combined entities' competitive positioning. Despite the fact that the bulk of corporate consolidations appears unlikely to constitute a threat to competition in the medium term, careful regulatory oversight may be warranted within the currently fragmented and highly commoditized industries, which appear likely to consolidate at the fastest pace. Despite the large-scale investments of both China and the EU in climate-change mitigation and renewable-energy promotion, the prevailing view on China-EU relations is one of conflict rather than cooperation. In order to evaluate the prospects of cooperation between China and the EU in these policy fields, empirical research has to go beyond simplistic narratives. This paper suggests a conceptual apparatus that will help researchers better understand the complexities of the real world. The relevant actors operate at different levels and in the public and private sectors. Deephouse raised an important question as to whether firms should be different or should be the same. The strategic balance perspective proposed by him suggests that by balancing the competing pressures of conformity and differentiation, a moderate degree of similarity is what contributes most to firm performance. This perspective has been widely accepted by scholars but follow-up studies are few and have achieved mixed results, leaving the knowledge base in this stream on shaky ground. This study conducted multiple replications of Deephouse's seminal work across 155 manufacturing industries in China and across two methods to examine its replicability, generalizability, and robustness to methods and to provide additional and cumulative information. The results show that strategic balance perspective was replicable, but with context limitations. Our exploratory analyses indicate several possible boundary conditions and promising topics for furthering the development of strategic balance perspective. The markets for recovered products in China typically consist of both remanufactured and refurbished products. The government requires that the remanufactured product match the quality level of the new product, while no such requirements exist for the refurbished product. Furthermore, remanufacturing is a relatively new phenomenon in China, whereas the refurbishing industry is old, widespread, and largely unregulated. Compared to the new product, the two types of recovered products enjoy a cost advantage, but they suffer from a lower willingness‐to‐pay in the consumer market. These observations lead to a game‐theoretic model consisting of three players: an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) providing the new product, a remanufacturing firm, and a refurbishing firm. The goal is to understand what equilibrium market structure may arise and how the equilibrium outcome depends on some of the key model parameters. It is found that (1) the entry barrier for the remanufacturer is always higher than that for the refurbisher; (2) remanufacturing almost always reduces the environmental and social (E/S) impact of the secondary market (for spare parts), such as the consumption of raw materials and energy during parts production, emissions and safety concerns during product use, and the E/S impact incurred during product disposal; and (3) the OEM has a natural tendency to discourage any form of product recovery by a third party, refurbishing or remanufacturing.
