The article summarizes the conference papers presented at the ninth biennial conference of the International Association for the Study of Forced Migration (IASFM). The IASFM conference was held January 9-13, 2005 in São Paulo, Brazil and was hosted by the Pontifical Catholic University and the Latin American Parliament. The conference featured 168 papers, primarily of applied research, presented by 200 academics, policymakers, practitioners, and government representatives. This was the first time that IASFM met in Latin America; the conference was simultaneously translated in Spanish, Portuguese, and English. The conference focused on the number of cases and causes of forced migration as well as possible repatriation of migrants. Smuggling and human trafficking was also addressed.

In this paper I critically assess the World Bank's adoption of discourses of corporate social responsibility in Latin America. I argue that the turn to private-sector associations as ‘agents of development’ or ‘corporate citizens’ is a logical extension of the neoliberal policy repertoire, allowing capital to position itself as the key actor within the arena of civil society and permitting the World Bank to resolve some of its internal debates around the role of institutions in development more broadly. At the same time, through a case study of the Guatemalan sugar industry, I argue that these initiatives are constructed in differentiated ways that are rooted in particular class trajectories and geographies of production and social reproduction. Looking at these so-called ‘strategic development alliances’ as arising at least in part from specific geographies of work may allow us to see where possibilities exist to push for more inclusive social and political participation. The article features an open source software introduced by the Consejo Latinoamericano de Ciencias Social, an academic network gathering 173 social science research institutions from 21 countries of Latin America and the Caribbean. CLASCO decided to create a cooperative digital library to facilitate integrated access to articles, full-text books, papers and working documents. In creating the cooperative digital library, CLASCO wanted a user-friendly and open source software system where users could search in all collections, in full text and editors could put their articles online.

This article presents information on the report of the Committee on Resolutions of the American Sociological Society (ASS), as of February 1, 1942. The Committee on Resolutions submits several resolutions for consideration by the ASS. The committee asked that it should be resolved by the ASS that, in the period of national emergency, social research and the teaching of sociological facts about the U.S. and U.S. communities should continue freely and with increased vigor, so that the U.S. may better understand its problems and be better prepared for world reconstruction at the termination of the present period of conflict. In view of the extraordinary opportunity for cooperation between teaching and research in sociology in Latin American countries; in view of the cordial relationships being developed; and in view of expressed wishes of representatives of the Americas; it should resolved that the ASS encourage both general and specific efforts toward cooperation, as, for example, exchange scholars and a clearing house for information on sociological research and publication.
