Information about the paper on the conceptions of social justice that was discussed during the 1974 annual conference of the Political Studies Association in Lancaster, England is presented. The paper also offers several principles which should be chosen to govern the distribution of wealth, prestige and other benefits among the members of the society. It emphasizes that arguments over these principles can never be resolved unless a conception of justice is found.

This paper interrogates the relationship between working-class participation in higher education ( HE) in England and social and cultural mobility. It argues that embarking on a university education for working-class people has been construed in governmental discourses as an instrumental means of achieving upward mobility, or of aspiring to 'become middle class'. Education in this sense is thus not only understood as having the potential to confer value on individuals, as they pursue different 'forms of capital', or symbolic 'mastery' ( Bourdieu, 1986), but as incurring a form of debt to society. In this sense, the university can be understood as a type of 'creditor' to whom the working-class participants are symbolically indebted, while the middle classes pass through unencumbered. Through the analysis of empirical research conducted with staff from working-class backgrounds employed on a university Widening Participation project in England, the article examines resistance to dominant educational discourses, which understand working-class culture as 'deficient' and working-class participation in HE as an instrumental means of securing upward mobility. Challenging the problematic notion of 'escape' implicit in mobility discourses, this paper concludes by positing the alternative concept of 'fugitivity', to contest the accepted relationship in HE between creditor and debtor. The article presents a speech by the president of the Sociological Society Edward Brabrook, during its annual meeting in London, England. The president addressed few words on the occasion of the annual meeting of the society. He paid tribute to physician J.H. Bridges, one of the most efficient member of the society. The production of three volumes of sociological papers, and of the first volume of quarterly "Sociological Review" were further discussed. In the first volume, published in 1904, V.V. Branford, honorary secretary and founder of the society traced the origin and the use of the word sociology. The twofold method by which the study is to be pursued was broadly defined. In the second volume its relation to the philosophy of history and its relation to ethics were stated, while the third volume fitly closes with the paradox of H.G. Wells, that sociology is not a science. The other sections discussed in the speech were progress report of the "Sociological Review," various meetings of the society in the past, finance, eugenics, civics, education and social economy.

This article reports on the receipt of University of Cambridge, Cambridge, England Professor of Applied Economics David Newbery of the Outstanding Contributions to the Profession of Energy Economics Award in 2002 from the International Association for Energy Economics (IAEE). The Award was presented to Newbery at the IAEE Prague Conference in 2003. University of Cambridge has been the locus of his academic career, but he has spent time at other academic institutions, with organizations such as the World Bank, and has served on several commissions. His publication and research record is indeed prodigious, much of it relating to taxation, regulation, transportation, commodity pricing, cost-benefit analysis, resources, and especially of late, electricity. Here he has been spearheading research on electricity markets, dealing with the thorny problems of market liberalization, regulation, restructuring and privatization. His contributed paper on energy tax policy is indicative of his long term interest in this topic, an interest that dates back at least to the mid-1980s.

How do buildings contribute to an organization's sense of what it is? In this article, we present the findings of a major archival study of an iconic university building to answer this question. Founded in the 19th century as a college for women, the building is analysed as a gendered space that embodies meanings that are selectively deployed and adapted by the present-day, now co-educational, university. By bringing together concepts of space and history so as to examine 'space in history' we show how over long periods of time what buildings 'say' about an organization change so that the past is both a legacy and a resource for shifting organizational identity. The article provides some insights into the publishing of the journal The Sociological Review by the Institute of Sociology for nearly fifty years. However, the Institute's resources are insufficient to carry the burden of publishing the Review and its connection with The Sociological Review, ceased with the completion of the issues for 1951 and 1952. From 1953, The Sociological Review was published by the University College of North Staffordshire, England wherein, the provisional Editorial Board was composed of the Professors in the Social Sciences and allied subjects at the University College of North Staffordshire. This article traces the history and the status of apprenticeship associations in London, England as of July 1912. At present there are twenty apprenticeship and skilled employment committees in London, and all of then are affiliated with the Central Apprenticeship Association. The lack of pecuniary support and apparent want of public interest in the work of apprenticeship associations has not doubt been partly due to the establishment of the Board of Trade Labour Exchanges, to each of which is attached a Juvenile Advisory Committee dealing with boy and girl labor. The first reason for the existence of apprenticeship associations is emphasized rather than diminished by the work of the Juvenile Committees of the Labour Exchanges. It is established even more clearly than before that the system of apprenticeship is not a worn-out custom, but there exists in the more skilled trades in London today a strong feeling in their favor and a distinct demand for apprentices on the part of employers. Among the less skilled trades of the system of apprenticeship has without doubts ceased to exist, but among the more skilled employment, which are every year increasing in number, the demand for apprenticeship shows no sign of abating.

The article reports that the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland was inaugurated at a meeting on March 9, 1990. The meeting was held at the General Hospital of Birmingham, England. The promotion of the interests, standards and training in coloproctology are the objectives of the association. It is hoped that the association will represent the political aspects of coloproctology.
