We investigated the reasons why the transition from paper to electronically formatted records during patient handover between ambulance crews and emergency department staff in a North East England Emergency Department has not always been viewed positively. Interviews with seven paramedics and three emergency department staff were conducted in addition to observations of 74 ambulance staff during 37 handovers in the emergency department. In just over half of the handovers (20), paramedics found it necessary to provide written information to aid emergency department staff, in addition to that recorded electronically. There were a number of issues that impeded the ready utilisation of electronic records in this context. The major factors identified as contributing to this were the choice of system architecture, the design of user interfaces, and the procurement process used by the National Health Service. Substance use and mental ill health constitute a major public health burden, and a key global policy priority is to reduce illicit and other harmful substance use. Amphetamine-type stimulants (ATS) are the second most used class of illicit drugs and a range of mental health issues have been documented amongst users. This paper explores the relationship between mental health and ATS use, through a thematic analysis of qualitative interviews with n = 18 current and former ATS users in England. The findings are presented by trajectory point of; (1) Initiation of ATS use; (2) continued and increased ATS use and (3) decreased and remitted ATS use. This work helps to develop understanding around the complex and bi-directional relationship between ATS use and mental health. Many ATS users lead chaotic lives and engage in multiple risk behaviours, however there is a need to better understand and conceptualise the dynamic interaction between different individual, social, environment and cultural factors that determine individuals' mental health and substance use. There is no 'one size fits all' approach to prevention and treatment, and these findings highlight the need for more joined-up, tailored and holistic approaches to intervention development. Background and Aims: Survey research indicates that autistic children and young people experienced high levels of anxiety and isolation during lockdowns in response to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Meanwhile, qualitative studies suggest that there may have been some benefits in the switch to home learning for this population. However, the majority of evidence to date comes from parent reports; the current study aimed to triangulate the perspectives of autistic youth and their parents in order to more fully understand the impact of periods of lockdown on education, relationships, and wellbeing. Methods: Thirteen semistructured interviews were conducted (six with adolescents, seven with parents) to explore the experiences of a group of autistic youth aged 13–14 years (Year 9 of mainstream education in England) during a period of intermittent lockdown. Data were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis. Results: Two broad themes capturing commonality and diversity in the adolescents' experiences of lockdown were developed. (1) "Different stress, not less stress" encapsulates the finding that, despite the enforced removal from the school environment providing short-term relief, new stressors contributed to consistently high levels of anxiety for the young people throughout lockdown periods. Stressors included managing home-school within the family unit, navigating time without boundaries, and anxiety about the virus. (2) "A shrunken world" reflects the heightened impact of losing access to meaningful social relationships, extracurricular pursuits, and health-promoting activities for autistic youth. Discussion: The early stages of the global response to the COVID-19 pandemic caused serious disruption to education for many children and young people globally,;our findings provide further evidence that the impact was particularly salient for autistic youth in terms of social isolation, lost learning, and heightened anxiety. Implications: These findings underscore the necessity of long-term support for the education, social needs, and mental health of autistic young people in the aftermath of lockdowns in response to COVID-19. Objectives: A participatory qualitative study exploring women's experiences of ageing with HIV in London, United Kingdom. The research considered how the concept of 'community' was relevant to women's experiences and what constructions of 'community' could be discerned in the experiences, accounts given and discourses employed by older women living with HIV. Methods: The research presented in this article was conducted as a PhD study between 2015 and 2019. The study was structured in multiple and overlapping phases, and adopted a feminist and participatory approach. The methods used in the research were as follows: participatory literature review, participatory creative workshops, policy review and stakeholder interviews, life story interviews, and a participatory analysis workshop. Results: Eighteen women living with HIV aged over 50 participated in creative workshops and fourteen women in life story interviews. Women's experiences of ageing with HIV are shaped by intersecting identities, community responses, and personal connections. Ageing with HIV brings challenges, added to and augmented by other difficulties women face in their lives, but women draw on individual and community assets in order to adapt, cope and thrive. Belonging to a community of women living with HIV and a broader community of people living with HIV created a vital space of safety, in which women found support, advice, and meaning. Conclusions: Women ageing with HIV countered the 'violence of invisibility' through forming community with other women living with HIV, rejecting stigma, and enacting a personal form of advocacy through care for others. Medium chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency (MCADD) is a rare metabolic disorder, and commonly now part of newborn screening programs. Those diagnosed at birth are now progressing from childhood to adulthood. The study aim was to explore young people's experiences of living with MCADD and managing their condition. A descriptive qualitative study design involving semi-structured interviews with 12 participants aged 10 to 15 years, recruited from one regional pediatric metabolic disorder service in England. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The two major themes were "Eating for energy" and "Growing into a self-management role." Self-monitoring and self-management skills had been nurtured from early childhood by parents and healthcare providers. Young people's anxieties concerned having to maintain adequate energy input to stay safe and the associated burden of responsibility. Growing up with MCADD presents specific challenges. We explored the potential of asthma apps to support self-management and identified preferred features that enable users to live with asthma. We recruited patients from five UK practices and social media; observed their usage of our app, administered a questionnaire and interviewed a purposive sample of patients and professionals to explore preferred features. Thematic analysis of interview was synthesised with quantitative data. A total of 111 patients used our app for 3 months. We interviewed 15 patients and 16 professionals. Participants were interested in a broad range of self-management support strategies, including action plans, monitoring with feedback, allergy/weather warnings and tailor-made running coaching. Professionals wanted to integrate patients' logs with practice records, though were concerned about data overload and risk of patient dependency. We propose a paradigm shift - from apps developed to provide features that are easy to implement technologically, to an approach in which apps are designed to deliver theoretically grounded preferred components. Objectives: It has been hypothesized that, in England, the rise in incidence of cervical cancer and the fall in screening coverage might be attributable in part to the effect of migration of Eastern European born women. We explored the attitudes and behaviours of these women towards cervical cancer prevention strategies. Methods: A mixed methods study using quantitative surveys and in-depth semi-structured qualitative interviews was conducted between April 2015 and December 2016. Results: In total, 331 surveys and 46 interviews were completed. Native English women had greater knowledge that a smear test is a screening test for pre-cancerous cervical cells (90% vs. 71% p ≤0.01), whereas migrant Eastern European women believed that it was conducted as part of a full gynaecological examination (46% vs. 21% p ≤0.01) and that the screen interval was annual (18% vs. 4% p ≤0.01). Distrust of the English healthcare system resulted in some Eastern European women returning to their country of birth for screening. Poor awareness of cervical cancer prior to migration and lack of information at registration with a general practitioner in England were associated with failure to participate in screening. Conclusions: The views and attitudes expressed by the migrant Eastern European women in this study suggest that they are not fully participating in cervical screening in England. Targeted education at the point of contact with healthcare services in England is needed to increase cervical screening participation among these women. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article focuses on examining the attitudes of individuals towards faecal immunochemical test (FIT) for haemoglobin in place of colonoscopy as a method for screening for the risk of colorectal cancer (CRC). It states that colonoscopy and FIT were performed with individuals at different risk levels of CRC. It mentions that the screening methodology was introduced by the National Health Service (NHS) Cancer Screening Programmes in England in 2006 to reduce mortality rates.

In England, the Choose and Book service, a main component of the England National Programme for IT (NPfIT), aims at empowering patients. Little research has been performed to evaluate clinicians' perceptions of, and satisfaction with, the Choose and Book service. The aim of the research was to examine clinicians' perceptions of, and satisfaction with, the Choose and Book service. A qualitative approach, using in-depth, semi-structured interviews, was used to collect data. Framework analysis was used to analyse the data. Twenty clinicians were interviewed, including 14 general practitioners (GPs) and six hospital consultants. Although clinicians were positive about the benefits of the Choose and Book service, they were concerned about the adverse impact of the electronic referral process on their job. Paying attention to the impact of the service on clinicians' jobs, at both ends of the process, could help to improve the referral process and the use of the system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
