Background To practice nursing ethics, students must first understand the ethical concepts and principles of their profession, but despite this knowledge, students face challenges in implementing ethical principles in clinical settings. The educational performance of nurse educators is critical in resolving these challenges. This study focused on the lived experiences of nurse educators. Objective To address the main concern of educators when teaching ethics to undergraduate nursing students and how they deal with it. Research Design We conducted this qualitative content analysis in Iran in 2020. We used individual semi-structured interviews to collect, record, and transcribe data, as well as Graneheim and Lundman method to analyze them. Participants and research context: We used purposive sampling to select 11 nurse educators who either were currently in the position of ethics educators or had taught ethics from Iranian universities of medical sciences. Ethical considerations The present study received the code of ethics No. IR.MODARES.REC.1399.036. Participants were aware of the study’s purpose and signed a consent form to participate in the study. We considered data confidentiality and the voluntary principle in data collection. Findings Nurse educators’ main concern was how to sensitize students to ethical principles in clinical settings, so they tried to involve students in the teaching process, to repeat and practice ethical principles and concepts, simplify and simulate ethical principles and concepts, and provide opportunities for students to gain clinical experiences. Discussion To sensitize students to ethical nursing care, nurse educators try to institutionalize ethical principles using different teaching methods, including students' involvement in teaching, experiential learning through simulated situations, practice, repetition, and provision of opportunities for practice and experience. Conclusion Improving students’ cognitive ability and objectifying moral concepts and principles for students will institutionalize moral values in them that are fundamental for their moral sensitization.

Because students are important elements and the main audience of higher education, their satisfaction with how nursing education can be provided can be considered an indicator of student satisfaction. In this regard, a study has been conducted on the satisfaction of undergraduate nursing students with how-to education. This study is a qualitative study conducted with the participation of ten nursing students (second to the fourth year). Data were collected using semi-structured interviews, and the contractual content analysis method was used to analyze the data. The findings of the study showed that the students were dissatisfied with how provided nursing education. The most important causes of student dissatisfaction are academics/educators and educational environments. According to the findings of the study, to reform and upgrade the educational system, the quality of educational environments and professors must be constantly reviewed and evaluated.

Background Healthy aging is one of the essential aspects of a health promotion program in the elderly. Aim Exploring ethical challenges in healthy elderly care from the perspective of nurses, older adults, and families in the Iranian context. Research Design This qualitative study was conducted using a content analysis approach in 4 health centers in northeastern Iran from 2017 to 2019. Semi-structured interviews, observation, review of elderly files, and focus groups were used to collect data. Ethical considerations The ethics committee of the university approved this study in Iran. This study adhered to the principles of the Helsinki Declaration. Ethical principles autonomy, confidentiality, and anonymity were considered for the participants. Participants were informed about the purpose of the study and submitted written informed consent regarding their participation. Findings The central theme was: An unfair approach to caring for healthy older adults. The three categories were as follows: Forgotten human care, disrespect, and lack of a meaningful and trustworthy relationship. The 14 subcategories highlighted the ethical challenges of healthy aging care in health centers. Discussion The findings showed that due to nurses’ unfamiliarity with the concept of healthy aging, older adults are discriminated against in care centers. Creating a standard care program for healthy older adults ensures that ethical principles are followed for these clients. Conclusion Various individual and organizational factors lead to an unfair approach to caring for healthy elderly in health centers. The following factors can help improve the care of healthy aging and reduce ethical challenges in this area: Introducing nurses to the concept of healthy old age and its dimensions, creating a community-based approach in health centers, prioritizing health issues over health issues, Involvement of families and older adults in needs assessment-goal setting-implementation and evaluation of health services, and design of home visit programs to provide services to healthy elderly.

Background: Nurses have always been known as an advocate for the rights of patients. The recognition of what is perceived as the violation of patients’ rights can help nurses to understand patients’ concerns and priorities. Thus, it helps nurses play their supportive roles more effectively. Objective: The aim of this study was to explore different dimensions of the violation of patients’ rights. Research design: Data were collected utilizing unstructured interviews and field notes. Data analysis was conducted using the qualitative content analysis approach. Prolonged engagement, maximum variation sampling, and member check were among the factors which enriched the research. Participants and research context: The sample consisted of 18 patients and 11 members of their families. They were purposively selected from two hospitals in Tehran during 2009–2012. Ethical considerations: The research was approved by the Ethics Committee of the university and hospitals. Finding: The patients’ rights were violated in a variety of ways. There were three main dimensions to this issue: (a) care recession including deprivation of the caregiver’s presence and the delay/lack of needed responses; (b) receiving mechanical care including superficiality, lack of emotion, and failure to understand the situation; and (c) being disrespected including humility and aggression. Conclusion: The patients and their families consider any shortcomings in relation to the patient and the quality of care as the violation of the rights. The findings of the study imply sensitizing managers toward providing appropriate conditions as well as educating nurses to observe patients’ rights. It is suggested that the processes leading to the violation of patients’ rights be discovered and prevented in the future.

Dignity is a human right and a base for human health. This right must be observed in work environments as a moral obligation. This qualitative study aimed to understand nurses’ experiences of violation of their dignity at work and to explore its dimensions. The participants were 15 nurses working in two hospitals in Tehran. The data were collected through 26 unstructured interviews and analyzed using content analysis. The dimensions of violation were ‘irreverence’, including experiences of abuse and violence, humiliation, and being ignored; ‘coercion and violation of autonomy’, consisting of the control of relationships, lack of privacy, rigidness, and imposition; ‘ignoring professional and scientific ability’, indicating impossibilities in applying nurses’ knowledge; and ‘denying the value of nurse/care’, being the theme that verified the dominance of treatment/cure and lack of recognition of care value. Health systems should take the promotion of the nurses’ dignity into account through providing a dignified work environment.

This study aimed to evaluate the reliability and validity of the Iranian version of the Uncertainty In Illness Scale — Family form. For this purpose, the Uncertainty In Illness Scale — Family form was translated from English into Persian and tested for psychometric properties. The analyses were carried out with data from a sample of 310 patients’ family members at one general hospital in Birjand city, the center of the Southern Khorasan province. The Iranian version of the Uncertainty In Illness Scale — Family form demonstrated an acceptable level of content validity with a content validity index of 0.91. The Cronbach’s alpha of 0.83 showed that the scale had reasonable internal consistency. This preliminary validation study of the Iranian version of the Uncertainty In Illness Scale — Family form showed that it is an acceptable measure to be used with Iranian patients’ family members. Additional research is recommended for further evaluation of the psychometric properties of the scale.

This article reports the results of a qualitative study that used a deep interview method. The aim was to gather lived experiences of clinical nurses employed at government-funded medical centres regarding the non-materialistic and spiritual aspects of the profession that have had an important impact on their job satisfaction. On analysing the participants' concepts of spiritual satisfaction, the following themes were extracted: spiritually pleasant feelings, patients as celestial gifts, spiritual commitment, spiritual penchant, spiritual rewards, and spiritual dilemmas. Content analysis of the data indicated that nurses who viewed these dimensions of job satisfaction as a significant factor considered nursing as an opportunity to worship God while providing care for patients, and regarded their aim as achieving patients' contentment by providing nursing care compatible with scientific care methods.
