Background HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) have disproportionately affected communities of men who have sex with men (MSM). We describe HIV and STI prevalence and testing patterns among urban Vietnamese MSM. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional community-based study of MSM in Hanoi, Vietnam in 2016. Participants self-reported experiences of social stigma in healthcare settings and previous HIV and STI testing. STI testing included HIV, herpes simplex virus-2 (HSV-2), syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia. Results 205 MSM participated in the study. STI prevalence was HIV (10%), HSV-2 (4%), syphilis (13%), gonorrhea (34%), and chlamydia (19%). More than half (55%) of participants tested positive for at least one STI. Most participants had been previously tested for HIV or another STI (72%), with 24% previously receiving a positive result. Perceived and enacted social stigma in healthcare contexts was negatively associated with previous HIV or STI testing (adjusted prevalence odds ratio (aPOR): 0.22; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.10–0.48). Discussion High prevalence of STIs was observed among Vietnamese MSM, and perceived and enacted stigma was related to HIV and STI testing. Our findings reaffirm the importance of regular STI screening among this population as well as additional outreach to promote safe HIV and STI healthcare engagement.

The purpose of this paper is to unpack the meanings and implications of mobility through the experiences of a group of Vietnamese women who decided to do doctorates in Australia. Drawing on the Deleuzian concepts of rhizome and becoming, our analysis of interview data suggests that mobility is made of multiple connections and is in constant movement, extending often reductive “push-pull” discussions of academic mobility. Each aspect shaping mobility connects to another that is multiscalar and multitemporal, where family, education ideologies, gender norms, economic globalization, neoliberalization within higher education, and the histories and biographies of mobile people come together. Power relations are immanent within structures associated with these connections and the women and mobility come together to create aspirations for educational, professional, and personal becoming. The paper offers a more nuanced understanding of international academic mobility rather than relying on economic perspectives and invites innovative approaches in supporting international doctoral students.

This poetic critical autoethnography paper studies my own experiences of disrupted mobility as a Vietnamese doctoral student in New Zealand who was stuck in Vietnam. Through the lens of space and place, I investigate the issues of sense of belonging and sense of place that were reconfigured in different spaces. The article highlights my agency to reinforce and reconnect with my sense of belonging. As the article focuses on immobility, it challenges the mobility bias in international education scholarship, arguing that new forms of mobility can be produced out of immobility and that identity reconstruction can be enabled through respatialization.

Although blended learning (BL) has emerged as one of the most dominant delivery modes in higher education in the 21st century, there are notable barriers and drawbacks in using BL for English language teaching and learning in Vietnamese universities. This study reports on research into the use of BL, conducted through semi-structured interviews with 30 English as a Foreign Language (EFL) lecturers from 10 different universities across the two major cities of Vietnam. The findings revealed that EFL lecturers identified eight groups of barriers and four groups of drawbacks to the successful implementation of BL. The most significant barriers included: lack of infrastructure and technology, institutional policies and support; lack of knowledge, experience and investment in using BL; lack of technological competence and information technology (IT) skills and lack of teaching time to employ web-based technologies and online resources in classrooms. Meanwhile, the most crucial drawbacks were: lecturers’ workload, ineffective use of BL, time consumption and demotivation. The authors point to the underlying factors contributing to these barriers and drawbacks and make implications for how some of these can be effectively addressed through constructive changes to policy and practice.

Background and Purpose: Cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) is a rare cause of cerebral infarction with diverse clinical presentations and outcomes. Novel oral anticoagulants (NOACs) provide an alternative option of systemic anticoagulation in various thromboembolic conditions, but uncertainty exists over the use of NOACs among patients with CVT. We present our initial experience with the use of NOACs for CVT in Vietnam. Methods: We included consecutive patients diagnosed with CVT presenting to 115 People’s Hospital in Vietnam between May 2016 and July 2017 and who were treated with NOACs. Data on patient demographics, vascular risk factors, clinical presentations, and outcomes at 180 days follow-up were obtained and analyzed. Modified Rankin scale (mRS) scores on admission, at discharge, and 180 days were assessed. Recanalization was assessed using magnetic resonance venography at 180 days follow-up. Venous thrombo-embolism events were defined as primary outcome, while bleeding complications were defined as safety outcome. Results: Among 32 patients with CVT (72% females; mean age: 40 ± 9.7 years), 15 were treated with rivaroxaban and 17 with dabigatran. A common risk factor was the usage of oral contraception (70%) on presentation. The mean mRS score on admission was 3.1 points (± 1.4). At FUP (median 8.5 months, IQR 5.5-9.5), clinical outcome (mRS ≤ 1) was excellent in most patients. All patients had at least partial recanalization and half of them achieved complete recanalization at 180 days follow-up. There were no bleeding complications. Conclusion: NOACs may offer clinical benefits with minimal complications in the treatment of CVT. Further prospective assessment with randomized controlled studies is warranted.

The first cohort of Czech second-generation Vietnamese has only recently reached adulthood. Raised by Czech nannies, they received early socialization into Czech society, while Vietnamese culture remained unfamiliar. With this childhood experience, the generation grew into young adulthood questioning their identity/identities. Caught between social and normative pressures from both the Vietnamese community and Czech society, the formation of associations by second-generation Vietnamese can be a means to respond to their disadvantaged position. Based on in-depth interviews with leaders of these associations and participant observation of their activities, the article examines the goals and activities of second-generation associations (SGAs) and compares them with first-generation immigrant organizations. SGAs are shown to fill the gap of parents as key role models of socialization in Czech society and as platforms to enhance the self-confidence and sense of social responsibility of second-generation Vietnamese in Czechia.

Aim: To explore Vietnamese–Australian children’s proficiency and use of Vietnamese and English and identify associated factors that are related to demographics, language practices, language ideologies, and language management. Methodology: Vietnamese–Australian parents ( n = 151) completed a questionnaire (in English or Vietnamese) regarding their child’s language proficiency and use, demographic details and a range of factors as conceptualized by Spolsky’s language policy theory: language practices; language ideologies; and language management. Data and analysis: Bivariate analyses (Pearson’s correlation and analysis of variance) and multiple regression models were conducted to explore associations between language proficiency and use and associated factors and identify the most significant factors. Findings/conclusions: Factors associated with children’s Vietnamese language proficiency (oral/written) included: demographic factors; language practices; language ideologies; and language management. In contrast, children’s English language proficiency (oral/written) was linked to demographic factors and language practices. Children’s Vietnamese language use was not significantly correlated with demographics but rather with language practices, language ideologies, and language management. Children’s home language use and proficiency did not have a negative impact upon their English proficiency. Originality: This study is the first to consider factors associated with Vietnamese–Australian children’s language proficiency and use. Significance/implications: Demographic factors, language practices, language ideologies, and language management were associated with children’s language proficiency and use. The results can be used by parents, educators, policy-makers, speech–language pathologists and other professionals to support Vietnamese–Australian and multilingual children around the world to develop and maintain their home and majority languages.

Informed by values of autonomy and self-determination, advance care planning assumes that individuals should independently take control of their future health. In this article, we draw on research conducted with Vietnamese health and community workers to problematize individualized approaches to planning ahead, reframe notions of “cultural and linguistic barriers,” and expose how homogeneous messages about care at the end of life are not readily translatable within and across diverse groups. Anthropological and feminist critiques of inclusion and exclusion are used to reorientate Anglophone framings of the individual and of cultural and linguistic differences. In this article, we suggest that it is the narrow singularity of care for the self—rather than diverse relationalities of care—that should be overcome if aging and end-of-life care policy and practice is to be broadened and made relevant to migrant and non-English-speaking groups. No brief dietary screeners are available that capture dietary consumption patterns of Asian Americans. The purpose of this article is to describe the cultural adaptation of the validated Dietary Screener Questionnaire (DSQ) for use by clinicians, researchers, and community-based partners seeking to understand and intervene on dietary behaviors among English-speaking Asian Americans, for the six largest Asian subgroups (Chinese, Filipino, Asian Indian, Vietnamese, Korean, Japanese) in the United States. This was mainly accomplished by adding culturally specific examples of foods to the questionnaire items via searching online databases and soliciting input from members of our community partner network representing each of the six largest Asian subgroups. Over half of the 26 items on the DSQ were modified to include more culturally specific foods. Developing high-quality tools that reflect the diversity of the U.S. population are critical to implement nutrition interventions that do not inadvertently widen health disparities.

There is a paucity of opportunities for Vietnamese EFL students to use and practise English speaking skills both inside and outside the classroom, attributing to students’ lack of interest and motivation in improving their speaking skills. Given that learning can be distributed across a multitude of formal and informal settings, the social and informal features of Facebook serve as potentially ubiquitous support for students to productively practise and use the target language. To date, however, much of the discussion of the promising incorporations of Facebook into EFL teaching and learning repertoire remains largely in writing and intercultural communicative effectiveness, with an evident scarcity of empirical research on students’ speaking practice. This qualitative study was conducted with 10 Vietnamese EFL learners, aiming to examine whether the Facebook-based learning community articulated any educational potentials for EFL speaking practice. The findings revealed that there were three features of the Facebook-based learning community, including flexible access, shared visions and values and collaborative relationships, which were beneficial for the members to maintain learning motivation, be more engaged in peer collaboration and co-construct essential knowledge for speaking practice. The findings suggested that the Facebook-based learning community could serve as a means for promoting more speaking practice among Vietnamese EFL learners.

This article aims to describe the Vietnamese Government’s policy response to support disadvantaged groups affected by the COVID-19 pandemic through the relief package. The Vietnamese policy response is characterized by rapid response, priority for disadvantaged groups in communities, social work core values in the policy, openness, and transparency. We hope the experiences from Vietnam could be helpful for similar settings in the world.

This study attempts to sketch out how Korean, Chinese, Japanese, and Vietnamese (hereafter K, C, J, and V, respectively) have produced Sinoxenic personal nouns. The formation of Sinoxenic personal noun falls into one of three types: (1) with an affix attached to the original word; (2) semantic expansion; (3) expansion to figurative meanings. One observes all three types throughout KCJV; however, specific patterns differ slightly between Vietnamese and the other three languages. The differences between Vietnamese and the other three in Sinoxenic formation result from differences in geographical distances and frequencies of linguistic exchanges. Meanings of Sinoxenic words stayed similar among Korea, China, and Japan, due to frequent human and literary exchanges, which did not occur between Vietnam and the other three countries.

Criminal sanctions, in spite of their obvious limitations, play an important role in the prevention of juvenile crime. In spite of international admonitions against the use of detention, Vietnam like many other South-East Asian countries still relies heavily on the deprivation of liberty, in both specialized juvenile institutions and adult prisons, in handling juvenile offenders. Because imprisonment, according to international standards, is meant to be used only as a last resort and for the shortest period of time possible, juvenile justice research has tended to ignore what is going on in places of detention and focus instead on diversion and alternatives to detention. This article focuses on Vietnamese law concerning the prison regimes applicable to juvenile detainees and the extent to which it complies with internationally accepted standards and norms. It reviews existing measures for the protection of juveniles against all forms of violence during their incarceration, including abusive disciplinary measures and the absence of independent oversight of prisons. It also considers arguments for and against the building of juvenile prisons to separate juveniles from adults as required by article 37 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. It concludes with recommendations for legal reforms.

International English Language Testing System (IELTS) scores have been widely used as the language entry requirements for international students in many English-medium universities. However, research on the predictive validity of IELTS on subsequent academic performance has been inconclusive. Additionally, despite the proliferation of IELTS preparation courses, very few attempts have been made to explore the extent to which these courses support course takers’ development of knowledge and skills needed for their subsequent university study. This paper investigated (a) the predictive validity of IELTS results on the subsequent academic performance of Vietnamese international students at UK universities, and (b) the extent to which an IELTS preparation course in Vietnam supported its course takers in their subsequent academic study in the UK. Questionnaires with 80 Vietnamese international students from 31 universities across the UK showed that there was a positive significant correlation between these students’ IELTS scores and their academic results. Follow-up interviews with two undergraduates and two postgraduates who had previously studied in the same IELTS preparation course, but were studying different academic disciplines at different institutions in the UK, and analysis of the materials used in their IELTS preparation course and university courses revealed that the course positively supported these students’ subsequent academic study, but certain skills and knowledge needed in their academic study were not effectively covered in the IELTS preparation course.

Vietnamese Americans are disproportionately affected by preventable late-stage cancers. This study capitalizes on the protective role of family networks to develop an online social media family group chat intervention promoting cancer screening among Vietnamese American families. A feasibility study was conducted to assess implementing Let’s Chat, a 4-week intergenerational family group chat intervention to increase cancer screenings. Vietnamese American young adults were trained to act as family health advocates on their private family group chats and share cancer screening messages. The intervention covered material on recommended screenings for colonoscopy for those aged 45+ years, HPV (human papillomavirus) vaccination for young adults, and Pap testing for women. Ten families ( n = 41) participated. Family group chat content analysis resulted in (a) sharing personal screening experiences, (b) family members being prompted to schedule cancer screening appointments after discussions in the chat, and (c) family members expressing a sense of urgency to follow up with cancer screening. Postintervention survey results revealed that 48% of participants received screening/vaccination, 77% reported intent to schedule an appointment to discuss recommended screenings, 61% reported discussing cancer screenings outside their group chat, 84% felt comfortable discussing screenings with family after the intervention, and 68% agreed that the group chat facilitated comfort around cancer screening discussions. Family members reported feeling closer to their family and greater comfort discussing cancer and cancer screening. Results from the Let’s Chat feasibility study indicate promise for implementing a randomized trial conditional on grouping family chats by age and gender to increase cancer screenings among Vietnamese American families.

Motivated by a call for risk discourse research in non-Western settings, this study examines how Vietnamese road safety video advertisements are constructed and interpreted. Following a literature review of risk and gender, the study first sets out socio-semiotic multimodal analysis of video advertisements to detail how concepts of risk and gender are constructed. Afterwards, I take an ethnographic-based approach in a series of interviews with professional Vietnamese women to gain insights into these concepts. Findings of the study reveal the expected female roles as wives and mothers in Vietnamese advertising as interpreted by Vietnamese women. The study contributes to an understanding of risk in this Asian setting and opens up the potential for a critical, interpretive approach to risk discourses that are grounded in lived experiences.

This study examined the relationships between acculturative stress, intimate partner violence (IPV), and life satisfaction of immigrant Vietnamese wives. A total of 288 immigrant Vietnamese women who were married to Korean men and were living in South Korea participated in the survey. As expected, the results indicated that acculturative stress was negatively related to life satisfaction. Moreover, IPV significantly moderated the relationship between acculturative stress and life satisfaction. The moderating role of IPV is evident when the acculturative stress is low.

Objectives: This is a first-of-its-kind cross-country collaboration between medical students from Singapore and Vietnam in conducting a cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) workshop for Vietnamese high school students. Our objective was to assess the effectiveness of CPR training in improving students’ knowledge and attitudes towards CPR. Methods: The CPR workshop was conducted using active learning methods, including interactive lecture session, games, small group demonstration and hands-on practice on the mannequin. Knowledge and attitudes towards CPR were studied using a standardised questionnaire administered at three time points: before the workshop (TP1), immediately after the workshop (TP2) and three months after the workshop (TP3). Results: There was an improvement in the median knowledge score from 6.5/14 at TP1 to 13/14 at TP2 ( pConclusions: The CPR training was effective in improving the knowledge and attitudes of high school students towards CPR. Our study supports expanding this workshop to train more students in basic cardiac life support in the community and further collaboration internationally between medical schools in order to increase the number of students in the community competent in performing CPR.

This article investigates the impact of migration on parent-child ties. It draws upon in-depth interviews with 15 Vietnamese mothers and 20 children (ages 16–25) who either migrated to or were born in the Czech Republic. It asks: How do first-generation mothers and second-generation children make sense of their parents’ migration in terms of their relationships with each other? What is the meaning of migration for mothers’ and children’s comprehension of parenthood and motherhood? The analysis of the interviews illuminates the tensions and ambivalences in narratives about migration and post-migratory situations. The article benefits from the inclusion of two perspectives—mothers’ and children’s—and contributes to scholarship on family migration, migrant childhood and migrant parenthood.

The role of teacher professional learning (TPL) in assisting teachers to teach pronunciation in English as a second/foreign language (ESL/EFL) contexts has received little attention. The study reported in extends this line of research by investigating how six EFL teachers at a Vietnamese university transform and integrate the pronunciation pedagogical knowledge they received from a TPL workshop into teaching practice. It then examines the teachers’ perceptions of the impact of the workshop on their knowledge gains and pronunciation teaching skills. Data were collected from seven lesson plans designed by the teachers, video recordings of 24 subsequent classroom observations, and six individual semi-structured interviews. The study adopted a content-based approach to qualitative data analysis. The findings show that the teachers were all able to translate TPL into classroom practice of pronunciation teaching. The findings further show that workshops designed and implemented in accordance with research-based TPL principles can be effective for promoting teachers’ knowledge of pronunciation pedagogy and refining their pronunciation teaching skills. The study has implications for ESL/EFL teachers’ professional development in pronunciation teaching.

Objectives Although obesity remains relatively rare among Vietnamese Americans, the prevalence of diabetes has increased in this population. This study aims to: 1. Estimate the prevalence of diabetes among non-obese Vietnamese American adults compared to non-obese non-Hispanic whites (NHW). 2. Identify factors associated with diabetes among non-obese Vietnamese Americans. 3. Examine whether Vietnamese Americans and NHW with diabetes are equally as likely to receive optimal frequency of diabetes care (i.e., hemoglobin A1C monitoring, foot care, eye care). Methods We conducted a secondary analysis of non-obese adult Vietnamese Americans using pooled data from the 2007, 2009, 2011 and 2013–2016 waves of the California Health Interview Survey (CHIS). Results Only 9% of Vietnamese Americans with diabetes are obese. Non-obese Vietnamese Americans have 60% higher adjusted odds of diabetes compared to non-obese NHW. Among non-obese Vietnamese Americans, those who were older, ever smokers and born outside US had a higher prevalence of diabetes. We found both Vietnamese Americans and NHW with diabetes received similar levels of care. Discussion Non-obese Vietnamese Americans have much higher odds of diabetes than NHW. Health professionals can effectively minimize disparities between Vietnamese Americans and NHW with diabetes through appropriate monitoring of foot care, eye care and A1C levels.

Following the contested fall of Sài Gòn in 1975, several South Vietnamese veterans found their existence and contributions during the Việt Nam War erased. Even after 45 years of diasporic displacement, or what I refer to as the involuntary and forceful exilic removal and geographical scattering of a group due to political turnover and turmoil, the histories, stories, and legacies of South Việt Nam and the Republic of Việt Nam have largely been forgotten in the present and political landscapes of both postwar Việt Nam and the United States. Based on what I describe as a diasporic re-reading of the lyrics and re-listening of selective pre-1975 Vietnamese music, this article explores the enduring corpus of musical sounds in nhạc vàng, or pre-1975 yellow music, specifically songs that focus on war and người lính (“soldiers”). By examining its historical and spatial trajectories, I argue that Vietnamese music can be heard and described as historical sources, much of which has been overlooked in the West, that document the many erased and discounted experiences, stories, and peril of South Vietnamese veterans. As I argue, diasporic sounds echoed in Vietnamese music are crucial to understanding the history and continued peril of South Vietnamese veterans in the current geopolitical landscape. The following analysis shows that Vietnamese music contextually becomes a diasporic source for re-membering the disremembered, the forgotten, and the silenced. Vietnamese music shifts from modern music to diasporic sounds of war remembrance and loss that underscore their continued postwar plight. In this essay, I also interviewed a South Vietnamese veteran. For him, music becomes a mode of survival, representing the unfading nostalgia and memories of the Việt Nam War.

Risks of intimate partner violence (IPV) often are higher among immigrant women, due to dependency, language barriers, deportation fears, cultural beliefs, and limited access to services. In the United States, Asian immigrant women experiencing IPV often are reluctant to disclose abuse. Viewing videos that depict IPV survivors who have successfully obtained help might encourage disclosure. After conducting formative research, we created brief videos in four Asian languages (Korean, Mandarin Chinese, Thai, and Vietnamese) for use in primary care clinic consultation rooms. We then conducted in-depth interviews with 60 Asian immigrant women in California to get their perspectives on how helpful the videos might be in achieving disclosure. Most participants believed the videos would promote disclosure in clinics, although those who had been abused seemed more skeptical. Many had stereotyped views of victims, who they felt needed to be emotive to be credible. Videos should be upbeat, highlighting the positive outcomes of escaping violence and showing clearly each step of the process. Various types of IPV should be described, so that women understand the violence is not exclusively physical. Victims would need reassurance that they will not be arrested, deported, or forced to leave their abusers. Discussing the benefits of escaping violence to children could be influential. Victims also must be convinced that providers are trustworthy, confidential, and want to help. To assist immigrant populations to disclose IPV to a health provider, videos need to be culturally relevant, explain various types of violence, allay fears, and show clear processes and benefits.

Many studies show that carers of people with mental illness experience a negative impact on their wellbeing. Given the growing number of people relocating to Australia every year, there are limited studies examining the experience of carers of people with mental illness from culturally and linguistically diverse communities in Australia. Using cultural safety as a conceptual framework, this exploratory study recruited 14 carers of Chinese and Vietnamese heritage who were attending culturally and linguistically oriented support groups in Sydney, Australia. Standardised, validated scales were administered to measure carers’ wellbeing and knowledge of recovery. Structured interviews were conducted to understand carers’ perceived needs. Descriptive statistical and qualitative thematic analysis were used. Findings show that carers experienced social isolation and psychological distress, had multiple diverse needs and had a reasonably good understanding of recovery. Six themes were identified: i) obtaining information in own language; ii) attaining emotional support from support groups; iii) needing respite services to cope with caregiving responsibilities; iv) involvement in planning of treatment and care; v) migration process influencing caregiving, and; vi) cultural and transcultural factors influencing caregiving experience. Findings indicate that some carers might be experiencing some level of culturally unsafe practices in mainstream mental health services. Implications for support groups and mental health services are discussed.

Barriers and enablers that the women leaders experience in the higher education (HE) sector have been a widely researched topic in many developed countries. However, the research on this topic is very limited in developing countries such as Vietnam. Despite the Gender Equality Law introduced in 2006 by the Vietnamese government to promote equal opportunities to women and also reducing the Gender Gap Index score of 70% in Vietnam, there are few women in leadership roles in several sectors including HE. This explanatory study has been conducted in nine universities in Vietnam to understand the barriers that prevent women from taking up leadership roles and the factors that motivate them in their career advancement to become a leader. The qualitative study was conducted with 21 participants (19 women and two men) working as senior leaders, middle managers, and lecturers in these universities. The study found that the main barriers in women’s career enhancement were work-life imbalance, subordinates’ perceptions regarding women leaders, social networking, and personal factors. The factors which motivated women leaders to advance in their career path were continuous family and mentor support, changing mindset of employers, and potential leadership competency of women leaders. The findings of this study would be beneficial for the Vietnamese HE institutions to determine policies and programs, which can support women’s career advancement to leadership roles bringing diversity and inclusion at these institutions. The results might be a steppingstone to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 5 on gender equality in Vietnam, which is one of the world’s fastest-growing economies.

This article reports on the administrative structure and collaborative activities of faculty and librarians within Vietnamese universities to evaluate their impact on teaching and research, as well as their collaborative benefits, advantages and disadvantages. The authors used a qualitative method to determine the current status of collaboration between faculty and librarians, and conducted 29 in-depth interviews with key participants at Vietnamese universities. The findings indicated that such collaboration was often based on the collaborators’ personal circumstances and that librarian liaison partnerships primarily related to the faculty’s profession, personality and attitudes at different units. Further, universities focused on collaborative activities to support teaching and research – designing syllabi, research support activities and collection development. The results of this study will be useful for stakeholders at universities in reviewing the effectiveness and limitations of collaborative relationships.

In recent years, the discipline of Asian Studies has struggled to adapt to a changing world and has seen a decline in student interest. A discourse about this issue has emerged that attributes this “crisis” in Asian Studies to various supposed faults in its forms of knowledge production, and that looks with hope to Asia for new forms of knowledge about the region. This paper takes issue with this discourse by employing an autoethnographic narrative to examine the ways in which mobility has affected the discipline of Asian Studies. It traces a path, followed by this author and many others, from an affective fascination with a foreign society to the professional production of knowledge. It then examines how this professional knowledge production has transformed under the influence of different forms of mobility (state-sponsored, private, and global digital), transformations that have led to the current “crisis” in Asian Studies.

The Chữ Nôm (CN) characters contained in the Sino-Vietnamese (SV) version of the apocryphal scripture Phật Thuyết Đại Báo Phu ̣Mẫu Ân Trọng Kinh 佛説大報父母恩重經 are quite unique in that they show obvious evidence of the ancient sesqui-syllabicity of the Vietnamese language. This study aims to point out their utility in the study of Vietnamese and SV history and to conduct a tentative reconstruction of 15th-century SV initials through comparisons of the CN readings and the SV readings of their phonetic components.

Departing from the dominant trend of favoring flexibility, flattened relations, and deterritorialization in featuring the transnational, this autoethnographic inquiry theorizes and exemplifies how the gravity of place may give rise to the evolvement of scholarship in the context of transnational mobility. I examine my own career trajectory to demonstrate how groundedness results from the dynamics between displacement and emplacement. While recounting my experience of moving back and forth between Western universities and my home institution in Vietnam, I explore issues such as the nation building framework for transnational mobility, scholarly self-formation, and community cultivation. The study centers a mode of emplacement termed ‘existential commitment’. It calls attention to the cultivation of a small, immediate scholarly community as a form of scholarship in the global periphery. The emphasis is on how the transnational can be grounded in local academic practices that address the world at multiple layers and scales.

This study investigates Vietnamese EFL teachers’ beliefs and practices regarding oral corrective feedback, exploring and seeking to explain some of the relationships between beliefs and classroom practices. Data were collected in primary schools in Vietnam, and consist of 24 classroom observations and interviews with six teachers. Overall, the teachers showed high levels of awareness of the benefits of oral corrective feedback. They nominated pronunciation errors as the most important target for correction in the primary context. In practice, although pronunciation and grammar accounted for the majority of the total errors, leading to the majority of total feedback moves, the frequency of feedback per error was much higher for vocabulary errors. Prompts were reported by teachers to be more effective and more favourable than reformulations, but this preference was not reflected in the classroom observations, in which a large number of didactic recasts were used. The observed discrepancies are interpreted in relation to contextual factors and the influence of different sets of beliefs on practices. It was also noted that the linguistic realizations of these teachers’ feedback moves contained some inaccuracies. Implications for educational practice are discussed.

Objectives: Asian American subgroups’ influenza vaccination is still below the US standards. This study examined the effects of patient-centered communication (PCC) on influenza vaccination and the general health (GH) of Chinese, Vietnamese, and Korean Americans. A group difference between younger and older adults was investigated. Methods: The 2014–2016 California Health Interview Surveys were merged (Chinese [ N = 1,680], Korean [ N = 514], and Vietnamese [ N = 644]; age 18+; younger = 1,629 and older = 1,209). Two path models (PCC [measured by physicians’ careful listening], vaccination, and GH; PCC [measured by physicians’ clear explanation], vaccination, and GH) were evaluated. Regression maximum likelihood was applied for missing values. Results: Both the first and second models showed good model fit scores (comparative fit index [CFI] = .95, root mean square error of approximation [RMSEA] = .04, and standardized root mean residual [SRMR] = .03; CFI = .93, RMSEA = .04, and SRMR = .03). There were direct effects of PCC on vaccination among younger adults. PCC directly influenced GH for both age-groups. Discussion: A PCC manual for physicians in local or community health centers could enhance both younger and older adults’ influenza vaccination.

Purpose: To examine the perceptions of and barriers to Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) participation among Asian and Pacific Islander (API) immigrants. Design: Qualitative focus groups were conducted in 4 API communities. Setting and Participants: Participants were recruited from 4 API communities (n = 68; 22 Tongan, 18 Vietnamese, 16 Filipino, and 12 Chinese) through local community-based organizations in Los Angeles and Orange Counties. Method: Trained bilingual and bicultural researchers conducted 8 focus groups in English, Chinese, and Vietnamese. Prior to the start of each focus group, participants completed a demographic questionnaire which included a United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food Security Module. Analysis: Audio recordings were transcribed verbatim and those in the native languages were transcribed verbatim. Transcripts in native languages were reviewed and translated into English. All transcripts were organized in ATLAS ti version 8.0 and analyzed using thematic analysis. The USDA Food Security Module results were scored and assessed for food insecurity. Results: Median age of participants was 58 years and 59.4% (n = 38) were food insecure. Barriers to SNAP participation were identified and organized within the Social Ecological Model by the following themes: (1) unclear program information, (2) application process, (3) shame, and (4) pride. Despite commonalities found across API subgroups, unique challenges with public charge and immigration existed within the subgroups. Conclusion: Culturally relevant in-language SNAP materials and multilevel interventions are needed to mitigate barriers and increase SNAP participation rates among low-income API groups.

Culture and socialization influence how individuals perceive and express emotional distress. Research therefore, must consider the context to capture individual experiences. However, the majority of studies on factors associated with emotional distress among migrants use quantitative approaches, limiting an in-depth understanding. This study investigates emic themes of emotional distress among Vietnamese migrants by integrating anthropological and psychiatric approaches. The mixed methods study first quantified differences in reported themes of distress between Vietnamese ( n = 104) and German ( n = 104) patients, who utilized two psychiatric outpatient clinics in Berlin, Germany. Based on these differences, ethnographic interviews were conducted with 20 Vietnamese patients. In the quantitative part, differences in frequency of reported distress between Vietnamese and German patients indicate cultural and migration-related issues among Vietnamese migrants, such as the upbringing of children in a transcultural context. In the qualitative part, interviews with Vietnamese patients elicited contextualizing information and additional themes of distress. Besides commonly expressed socioeconomic themes, such as work and finances, we identified affectively charged themes concerning roles toward partnership and children. A central emic theme is expressed as “moments of speechlessness,” which go beyond a lack of language proficiency and challenge patients in different spheres of life. Migration entails complex affective dynamics, determined by a specific migratory and post-migratory context. Within this context, norms and values determine which themes of distress patients articulate openly. Therefore, an interdisciplinary, mixed-methods approach can yield a contextualized understanding of emotional distress and the complex nature of migration.

This study examined whether the reading passages in the new series of English-language textbooks for high-school students in Vietnam fostered reading comprehension and incidental vocabulary acquisition through reading by looking at four factors: the number of unfamiliar words in the texts, the importance of these words for text comprehension, the usefulness of contextual clues for interpreting the meanings of these words, and the frequency of these words within and across the texts. Results showed that most of the reading passages were overloaded with novel words and few of these words were important for text comprehension. Rarely did these words reoccur in the texts and the chance for successful lexical inferencing was extremely slim due to the paucity of useful contextual clues. These findings provide useful implications for both second language (L2) instructors and textbook writers inside and outside of this context.

The Problem According to the Mastercard Index of Women Entrepreneurs, 31.3% of businesses in Vietnam are owned by women, placing Vietnam at the sixth out of the 53 surveyed economies. Despite the prevalence of female entrepreneurship in Vietnam, little is known about the motivations, challenges, and success factors of those occupying this vibrant sector of the Vietnamese economy. Greater knowledge of how women entrepreneurs perceive themselves and the Vietnamese business environment could stimulate greater support for their personal and career development. The Solution This study aims to explore Vietnamese women entrepreneurs’ motivations, challenges, and success factors. This qualitative research study provides (a) a brief introduction to the business context and the role of women entrepreneurs in Vietnam; (b) findings on Vietnamese women motivation for to starting and running business, as well as the challenges they face, and factors contributing to their success; and (c) recommendations for government policies, business communities, and the development of female entrepreneurs in Vietnam. As few research studies on women business owners in Vietnam are available, this empirical study can contribute to more effective practice and further research on this cohort in Vietnam. The Stakeholders Recommendations provided in this study will help governmental policymakers, business communities, and female entrepreneurs in Vietnam.

While the notion of farm tourism is not new in tourism studies, it continues to evolve and take forms not previously examined. This article describes the development of this form of tourism on the outskirts of Hội An (a World Heritage Site in Vietnam) as a farming sector seeks to build on a demand being created by visitors to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization gazette site. Based on 27 informants, the article examines the nature of the agritourism products and their move towards sustainable tourism in response to demand. The article highlights (a) the nature of the products, (b) the opportunity provided by proximity to a World Heritage Site and (c) the educational background of the farmers and suggests that levels of education possess importance by enabling entrepreneurs to acquire business skills not previously available to earlier generations. In identifying this, the article contributes to a literature on how tourism products evolve in developing countries, for not only does education create skill sets but also creates an awareness of the commercial and social values of traditions and the need to retain this as expressions of cultural patterns of life.

In order to facilitate the adoption of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) for accessing agricultural information by smallholders, it is critical to understand their perspectives on the use of ICT. However, few empirical studies have considered how smallholders utilise ICT in Central Vietnam. This research investigates the Central Vietnamese smallholders’ views on the extent of use of ICT for accessing agricultural information. A sample size of 250 smallholders was randomly selected from a total of 687 smallholders in Trieu Phong district, Central Vietnam. A two-section questionnaire was used to gather data. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyse the data. The smallholders used mobile phones, TV and radio networks/broadcasts as the common ICT tools, and these were also effective ICT tools for accessing agricultural information. Lack of knowledge and skills for using applications on mobile phones were the main challenge to the smallholders’ use of ICT. A statistically significant relationship, existing between the extent of mobile phone use and the smallholders’ age (χ = 10.04, p = 0.040), gender (χ = 5.99, p = 0.014) and the type of households (χ = 6.84, p = 0.033), was found. Similarly, there was a statistically significant relationship existing between the extent of radio network/broadcast use and the smallholders’ age (χ = 9.58, p = 0.048) and gender (χ = 4.83, p = 0.028).

In 2016, California voters overturned a 1998 law that curtailed bilingual instruction throughout the state. After nearly 20 years of “English only” programs, what will it take to restore the schools’ capacity to provide a broader range of services to English Learners, including dual language immersion and other forms of bilingual instruction?

Lack of family engagement in transition planning continues to be a challenge in special education. This study examined the experiences of Chinese and Vietnamese families of youth with disabilities toward transition planning. Results suggested that participants were eager to be engaged in the transition planning and valued the importance of transition planning activities. They wanted to ensure that their youth were equipped with skills, so they could lead a successful and independent adult life. However, schools provided little to no information regarding the transition planning process. This lack of information prevented them from being actively involved. Implications for future research and practice to enhance partnership between schools and diverse families in the development of transition planning are discussed.

This article explores mutual relationships between embeddedness and second-generation ethnic entrepreneurs. We apply an exploratory and inductive qualitative research design to investigate how a dual embeddedness of second-generation immigrants in the ethnic community and in mainstream society influence their entrepreneurial activities and vice versa. Based on multiple cases studies of Vietnamese second-generation ethnic entrepreneurs, we identify four causal relations between embeddedness and entrepreneurial activities: (a) resource mobilisation; (b) formation of entrepreneurial motivation; (c) feedback effect on embeddedness and (d) re-formation of dual identity. This research contributes to the research on ethnic entrepreneurship by showing novel causalities between socio-psychological factors and entrepreneurial activities of second-generation entrepreneurs.

Following the deaths of thirty-nine Vietnamese nationals, whose bodies were found in the back of a refrigerated lorry container in Essex, UK on 23 October 2019, this article looks at the global conditions and the deadly border regimes that contributed to the deaths. The author, who co-organised a vigil for the ‘Essex 39’, argues that the mainstream response, calling for tougher borders and criminal investigations aimed at prosecuting smugglers and traffickers, does not address the enabling conditions for migrant exploitation, abuse and death.

In this paper, we develop the concept of home, presenting an example of Vietnamese entrepreneurs running their business in Poland. This subject is peculiar to the perspective of immigrants, who have already left their home country and need to establish themselves in a new place. We base our study on material gathered from four sources: a broad ethnographic study, non-participant and direct observation of Vietnamese places in Poland, photographs taken in Poland and Vietnam, and interviews. We argue that the concept of home is extremely broad and is represented by immigrants in diverse ways. After our analysis, we propose a deeper understanding of the activities of immigrants and their ways of acculturation.

Information about the Vietnamese physical education (PE) programme is limited due to a lack of relevant studies. Using the Health Optimising Physical Education as a conceptual framework, this study examined students’ physical activity (PA) levels in the fifth-grade PE programme in Vietnam and barriers to programme implementation. Eight schools (28 PE classes) were randomly selected for assessing students’ PA levels, lesson context, and PA promotion during PE lessons using the System for Observing Fitness Instruction Time. In-depth interviews were also conducted with school administrators, PE instructors, and classroom teachers using semi-structured guides to examine barriers influencing the implementation of the current PE programme. Results showed students spent 33% of PE time in moderate–vigorous physical activity (MVPA), which is less than the international recommendation of 50%. The amount of MVPA varied by school type, instructor gender and qualification. Programme implementation was negatively affected by the current structure that limits autonomy, a proclivity for a “one size fits all” approach to teaching PE, and limited motivation for PE instructors to improve their teaching. The low perceived value of PE, lack of support and professional development for existing PE instructors, and an over-emphasis on sports training due to available financial incentives were also identified as important barriers that affected programme implementation. Addressing these barriers could help improve the quality of the Vietnamese PE programme.

This study investigated the nature of learners’ positive emotional engagement during a task-based interaction and its relationship with their interactional behaviours. Vietnamese learners of English as a foreign language (EFL; n = 74) performed a communicative task in dyads in 15 minutes. Their positive emotional engagement was gauged using an Experience Sampling Method via a questionnaire that the participants completed after every five-minute interval of the interaction, capturing three timepoints of learners’ emotional engagement. Learners’ cognitive and social interactional behaviours were examined in light of the amount of second language production (words and turns), language-related episodes (LREs), and the degree of collaboration. Results showed that learners’ positive emotional engagement fluctuated over the course of a 15-minute interaction. Also, learners’ levels of positive emotional engagement were positively correlated with the amount of second language production and the degree of collaboration, but these relationships varied across the three intervals. No relationship was observed between learners’ emotional engagement and LREs. The results indicate that although learners’ positive emotional engagement may not be linked with their attention to form, relationships exist between learners’ positive emotional engagement and their language production, as well as their social relationships. These relationships can be, however, subject to change over the course of a short interaction.

The paper reports the results collected from social work students (SW) and nonsocial work students (NSW) of Ho Chi Minh City Open University (OU) through attitudes toward poverty and poor people in Vietnam. The Attitude toward Poverty Short Form (ATP-SF) 21-item (ATP-SF) scale, developed by Yun & Weaver (2010), was used for the data collection. The sample of this study comprises 180 students enrolled in three disciplines: social work (n = 86), law (n = 34), foreign language (n = 30) and economics (n = 30). The questionnaire was used to collect the data for the study. Cronbach’s alpha and independent t-tests were run to compare means between two groups of students. All students voluntarily participated in the survey. Results: A total of 180 social work students and nonsocial work students at Ho Chi Minh City Open University in Vietnam were surveyed. Among them, 86 were social work students, and the other 94 students were from law (n = 34), foreign language (n = 30) and economics (n = 30). The survey results showed that when looking for causes of poverty, social work students and nonsocial work students put the most emphasis on structural factors of poverty. However, social work students, compared with nonsocial work students, consider personal deficiency and stigma more important.
