The DIAMAP Project, which has drawn up a road map for diabetes research in Europe, has now concluded, and the results are available in the form of a report and searchable databases. The DIAMAP road maps provide strategic guidance for diabetes research activity and investment in Europe, with the person with diabetes and a broad approach to research being integral to the process.

The challenge of rising mortality and morbidity from diabetes and its complications will only be met through greater investment in research. European expertise is well placed to play a leading role in this effort particularly if integrated, coordinated and supported by adequate funding and more rational use of these funds. A Road Map for Diabetes Research in Europe (DIAMAP) has charted a route for diabetes research in Europe encompassing molecules to clinical sciences. This review describes how the road map has undergone public consultation and produced recommendations to guide the direction of research and address the ‘roadblocks’ that delay or prevent the translation of research into patient benefits. The map has been based on a survey of current European diabetes research and funding. A Road Map for Diabetes Research in Europe (DIAMAP) is a European Commission initiative to develop a strategic plan for future diabetes research in Europe. The DIAMAP project aims to identify diabetes research priorities for Europe, and will propose practical ways to integrate and co-ordinate European research expertise to focus research for the benefit of the patient.
