Well-Known Institute of Management is situated in New Delhi, India, and offers a 2-year fully residential post-graduate programme in management (MBA). Dr. Vivek Gupta joined the Well-Known Institute of Management in the year 2018 as an assistant professor in the area of information technology and system management. He is also heading the IT team of the institute. The critical and unprecedented COVID-19 situation brought another challenge for Dr. Gupta and his team. Going virtual is inevitable. But which platform will serve the purpose of running the next academic session in virtual mode? The IT team proposed a three-stage process in deciding and recommending a plausible online platform for conducting online classes. In the first stage, requirements for conducting online classes are to be analysed and recorded. In the second stage, the options available in the market are explored followed by their assessment based on the requirements recorded in Stage 1. The IT team simplified the assessment by first mapping these requirements with 20 important functionalities of these five platforms. However, the outcome was not favourable. Not a single platform is meeting all the requirements. The IT team is back to square one. In addition, there are other major considerations that needed thorough analysis like managing the desirable behaviour from the users of the selected online platform. The next few months are going to be a real challenge for Dr. Gupta and his team in aligning the institute with a new norm in the upcoming academic year.

Well-Known Institute of Management is situated in New Delhi, India, and offers a 2-year fully residential post-graduate program in Management (MBA) and a doctoral-level program. While the permanent and fully residential campus of the institute with state-of-the-art facilities is under construction (expected to be completed by June 2024), the institute is currently functioning from a rented transit campus. This paper examines the curation of a month-long public exhibition titled #AanaJaana [#ComingGoing] in one of New Delhi’s busiest metro stations, as a form of self-authorship by young women from its digital and urban margins. #AanaJaana [#ComingGoing] is a metaphor for journeys, communications, connections, associations, interceptions, social networks and individual/collective behaviours, that is curated as women ‘see’ and ‘speak’ with/through their mobile phones. Using Marie Louise Pratt’s notion of ‘contact zone’, we examine #AanaJaana as a space of encounters that emerges by visually ‘composing-with’ as well as ‘learning-with’ the realities and constraints of space, technology and power. Based on self-authorship over a period of 6 months within a ‘safe space’ of a WhatsApp group of young women living in the urban margins, we draw attention to #AanaJaana as a set of crosscutting networks of power dynamics over women’s bodies across the home, mobile phone and the city. #AanaJaana refers to how young women in the margins negotiate the ‘freedoms’ of moving (aana) in online space with the ‘dangers’ of going out (jaana) into the city, or the restrictions of entering (aana) online space with the freedom of leaving (jaana) home. We argue first, that #AanaJaana is a space of confinement because of the infrastructural paralysis in the peripheries. Second that it is also at the same time translocally produced by referencing several textual, digital and material spaces of self-realisation. Finally, we argue that #AanaJaana is a space of intertextuality through encounters between emojis, shorthand, voice notes on the mobile phone, with parody and dark humour of their gendered experiences that can transform shame, humiliation and fear into reflection, resistance and agency. The paper concludes that as a polycentric practice, #AanaJaana offers an appropriate metaphor to expand the ‘contact zone’ in order to decolonise gendered knowledge and power across digital-analogue margins.

Following the infamous gang rape of a young woman in New Delhi in 2012, India introduced a host of legislative reforms, including harsh punishments for sexual offences. Indian feminist groups, though invested in some of these reforms, have been critical of the carceral approach, but other than denouncing the death penalty, they have largely abstained from conversations around appropriate punishments for sexual crimes. Mapping the responses of feminist groups to the J. S. Verma Committee, this article underscores inconsistencies between the positions on defining sexual offences on the one hand and suggesting appropriate punishments on the other. It argues that the absence of engagement around complex issues of criminal law and sentencing not only left feminists divided on the outcome in Mahmood Farooqui’s case but also revealed unintended consequences of the newly introduced law on rape. The article concludes by questioning the use of criminal law as a site for feminist reform.
