Superior vena cava syndrome is rare and challenging clinical entity in neonates. Medical treatment options are usually effective. However, when failed, surgery is warranted. Herein, we present a preterm neonate with SVC syndrome and associated chylothorax. When 2 weeks old, he underwent successful open thrombectomy and SVC reconstruction under cardiopulmonary bypass. Immediately after the operation findings of SVC syndrome and chylotorax were completely resolved. Purpose: This letter evaluated the impact of different management strategies, specifically the presence or absence of therapeutic anticoagulation, on clinical outcomes for central venous catheter (CVC)-associated deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in cancer patients., Methods: One-hundred ninety-eight adult cancer patients with a confirmed CVC-associated DVT diagnosis from February 2013 and February 2021 were included., Results: Incidence of symptomatic recurrent venous thromboembolism (VTE) was similar between patients who received therapeutic anticoagulation and those who did not (14% vs 16%, p  = 0.807). Central venous catheter (CVC) tip migration is a well reported delayed complication of these vascular access devices with left-sided internal jugular or subclavian vein placement being the primary risk factor for this complication. We report a case of left internal jugular CVC migration and its diagnosis made by the heretofore unreported use of intraoperative transesophageal echocardiography in this context. Background: Central Venous Catheter (CVC) is indispensable to unplanned and urgent start haemodialysis in chronic kidney disease (CKD). While cuffed CVC is preferred to non-cuffed CVC for urgent start haemodialysis, patient's clinical condition might warrant immediate insertion of non-cuffed CVC. In the resource poor setting, non-cuffed CVCs might have to be retained longer than guideline recommended limit of 2 weeks. In this multi-centre retrospective observational study, the real-world survival of non-cuffed CVC was assessed among CKD patients who initiated dialysis urgently., Methods: CVC survival was assessed by Kaplan-Meier survival estimate. Predictors of premature CVC loss were assessed using multi-level multi-variate Cox frailty model wherein, each centre was provided with a random intercept to account for within-centre correlation of practice patterns., Results: Among 433 non-cuffed CVCs, there were 393 removals out of which 80% were elective and 20% were premature. The median CVC survival was 37 days (95% CI: 35-41). The rate of premature CVC removal was 4.5/1000 CVC-days (95% CI: 3.6-5.6). Mechanical complications followed by central line associated blood stream infection (CLABSI) were the most common reasons for premature removal. Rate of CLABSI was 1.7/1000 CVC-days (95% CI: 1.2-2.5). Diabetic CKD significantly increased the hazard of premature CVC removal (HR 1.91, 95% CI: 1.01-3.63, p  = 0.04) while right internal-jugular location decreased the hazard (HR 0.22, 95% CI: 0.13-0.38, p  < 0.001)., Conclusion: Prolonged retention of non-cuffed CVC (median 37 days) is common in resource-poor setting. Venous access devices are used in health care. To prevent occlusions the evidence confirmed the need for routine catheter flushing before and after infusion as well as at the end of use. To date, the efficacy of heparin has not been demonstrated. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the locking of central venous catheters with heparin versus normal saline in adults to prevent occlusion, catheter-related infections and thrombosis in adults. A literature search using Medline, Embase, Cochrane Library and Cinahl was performed to identify all meta-analyses addressing the effectiveness of heparin versus normal saline in locking central venous catheters in adults. Four reviewers independently selected publications assessed quality and extracted data. Parameter estimates regarding occlusion, catheter- related infections and thrombosis were pooled using an umbrella review. We identified 6356 references. Seven systematic reviews were included in the study. Most of the studies included in the systematic reviews were conducted in oncohaematology departments, intensive care and cardiac surgery units among patients with multiple diseases and chronicity. Most studies report a heparin concentration of 10 to 5000 IU/ml versus normal saline and other solutions. There was no evidence that heparin was more effective than normal saline in reducing complications such as occlusion, catheter-related infections and thrombosis. No statistically significant difference was found between heparin and normal saline in reducing catheter occlusion. Background: Controversy remains as to whether initiating haemodialysis (HD) with a central venous catheter (CVC) and vascular access conversion are associated with the risk of morbidity and mortality in incident HD patients., Methods: At our dialysis centre, the vascular access strategy is to create an arteriovenous fistula (AVF) early and use the AVF to initiate HD. In emergency situations, HD is initiated with a CVC and subsequent conversion from a CVC to an AVF as soon as possible. The effects of early AVF conversion on hospitalization and mortality were analysed., Results: At HD initiation, 35.42% used AVF, 15.63% used CVC with immature AVF and 48.96% used CVC, and all patients were able to convert from CVC to AVF within approximately 3 months. Compared to starting HD using an AVF, using a CVC was associated with access-related hospitalizations at 2 years, regardless of whether an AVF was created before (incidence rate ratio (IRR) = 3.02, 95% CI 0.89-10.24, p  = 0.03) or after (IRR = 4.10, 95% CI 1.55-10.85, p  < 0.01) HD initiation. The Kaplan-Meier method showed that the 2-year survival probability was not statistically significant between the three groups (log-rank χ 2  = 0.165, p  = 0.921). Multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression showed that starting HD with a CVC was not associated with mortality at 2 years ( p  > 0.05)., Conclusion: In this cohort, initiating HD with a CVC was associated with more access-related hospitalizations. Mechanical complications during central catheterisation occur in approximately 15% of cases. This report describes a potentially fatal yet avoidable complication and highlights the typical radiological features of a retropharyngeal haematoma.A patient with acute myeloid leukaemia was admitted to the intensive care unit with respiratory distress immediately after an attempt to insert a subclavian catheter without ultrasound guidance. A computed tomography scan revealed nearly complete obstruction of the upper airway by a retropharyngeal haematoma, with a blush of contrast agent. There was also a mass effect on the trachea and mediastinal structures. The haematoma was caused by accidental puncture of the thyrocervical artery. The patient's condition improved following orotracheal intubation, transfusion of platelets and fresh frozen plasma, arterial radio-embolisation, and clinical monitoring of haematoma resorption, which restored airway patency.A retropharyngeal haematoma is a potentially lethal complication, and its treatment carries significant risks. Objective: To collect real-world data to demonstrate the safety and performance of Arrowg+ard Blue® /Arrowg+ard Blue Plus® (AGB/AGB+) central venous catheters (CVCs)., Methods: This observational, retrospective study involved patients who required AGB/AGB+ CVCs at designated general hospitals in USA (22), UK (19) and Germany (2). Data were extracted from electronic medical records. There were no specific inclusion/exclusion criteria. Primary endpoint was successful treatment without an adverse event (AE). Secondary endpoint was rate of AEs., Results: In total, 384 cases were included from 43 centres and most patients (74%) were >35 years of age. A success rate of 99%, and an overall AE rate of 0.8% were observed. Moreover, the overall infection rate was lower than typically reported for standard catheters. In addition, power injection of contrast media was successful in all 51 cases., Conclusions: This study indicates the AGB/AGB+ CVCs perform as intended with a high success rate and few AEs. Background: Centrally inserted central venous catheters (CICCs) are commonly placed in critically ill patients who require a central venous catheter (CVC). Recently, peripherally inserted central venous catheters (PICCs) have been widely used on general wards. However, the safety of PICCs in critically ill patients remains unclear., Method: We conducted a retrospective observational study at a mixed intensive care unit (ICU). Adult patients (⩾18 years) who were emergently admitted to the ICU and underwent CVC insertion between April 2019 and March 2021 were enrolled. We compared the safety of PICCs and CICCs. The primary outcome was the overall rate of catheter-related complications, including bloodstream infections, thrombosis, insertional trauma, catheter malfunction, and accidental removal. We used a stabilized inverse probability weighting (sIPW) model to estimate the effects of PICC use., Results: A total of 239 CVCs (PICCs, 53; CICCs, 186) were inserted into 229 patients. Although the severity of illness did not differ significantly between the groups, the length of hospital stay and mean indwelling catheter duration were significantly longer in the PICC group. There was no significant intergroup difference in the overall rate of catheter-related complications (PICC: 9.4% vs CICC: 3.8%; odds ratio [OR]: 2.65; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.63-10.2, p  = 0.145), and there were 7.7 and 9.0 complications per 1000 catheter days in the PICC and CICC groups, respectively (hazard ratio [HR]: 0.61; 95% CI: 0.14-2.65, p  = 0.513). After adjustment using the sIPW model, PICC use was not found to be associated with a reduction in catheter-related complications (adjusted OR: 3.10; 95% CI: 0.90-10.7; adjusted HR: 0.53; 95% CI: 0.14-1.97)., Conclusion: We found no significant differences in catheter-related complications between patients treated using CICCs and those treated using PICCs after emergency ICU admission. Purpose: Totally implanted venous access device are widely used for long-term chemotherapy in cancer patients. Previous studies have only focused on the analysis of complications associated with infusion port implantation, ignoring the causes of unsuccessful infusion port implantation. The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between body mass index (BMI) and the success rate of transaxillary intravenous port implantation in breast cancer patients., Materials and Methods: To review 361 breast cancer patients who underwent intravenous port implantation from January 2021 to September 2021. Baseline data, and surgical data were collected from the patients, and the success rate of puncture of the axillary vein was recorded. The logistic regression analysis and smoothed curve fitting were used to assess the relationship between BMI and the success rate of axillary venipuncture. In addition, subgroup analyses were performed to explore potential interactions., Results: Under ultrasound guidance, 67.3% of patients (243/361) had an infusion port implanted by axillary vein puncture. There was a roughly linear relationship between BMI and the success rate of axillary venipuncture. In the multiple regression equation, BMI was significantly and negatively associated with the success rate of axillary venipuncture (OR = 0.83; 95% CI = 0.77-0.89; p < 0.001). Background: Central venous catheterization may be required in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) for parenteral nutrition, antibiotic treatment, or blood sampling. Different venous access devices can be taken into consideration-centrally inserted central catheters (CICC), peripherally inserted central catheters (PICC), and femorally inserted central catheters (FICCs)-depending on the clinical conditions of the patients. Regardless of the type of access, the presence of paraplegia or tetraplegia is commonly considered a risk factor for catheter-related thrombosis (CRT)., Method: This retrospective study analyzes the rate of CRT and other non-infectious complications associated with central venous access in a cohort of 115 patients with paraplegia or tetraplegia, most of them affected by ALS ( n  = 109)., Results: In a period of 34 months, from January 2021 to October 2023, we inserted 75 FICCs, 29 CICCs, and 11 PICCs. PICCs were inserted only in patients with preserved motility of the upper limbs. All devices were inserted by trained operators adopting appropriate insertion bundles. We had no immediate or early complication. Though antithrombotic prophylaxis was adopted only in 61.7% of patients, we had no symptomatic CRT. Background: Central venous catheters (CVCs) provide an immediate hemodialysis access but are considered to be of elevated risk for complications. It remains unclear, if CVCs per se have relevant impact on clinical outcome. We provide an assessment of CVC-associated complications and their impact on mortality., Methods: In a single center retrospective study, CVC patients between JAN2015-JUN2021 were included. Data on duration of CVC use, complications and comorbidities was collected. Estimated 6-month mortality was compared to actual death rate., Results: About 478 CVCs were analyzed. Initiation of dialysis was the main reason for CVC implantation. Death was predominant for termination of CVC use. Infections were rare (0.6/1000 catheter days), complications were associated with certain comorbidities. A fibrin sheath with central venous occlusion is a common complication after central venous catheterization, and these patients often experience catheter dysfunction. A calcified fibrin sheath can cause a catheter to be stuck, and typically necessitates catheter removal or replacement. From another point of view, a calcified fibrin sheath can be seen in ultrasound and computed tomography, and the original fibrin sheath channel between the internal jugular vein and the atrium is unusually strong. When central vein occlusion occurs, the remnant calcified fibrin sheath of the internal jugular vein can be punctured under ultrasound guidance, allowing the guidewire to enter the atrium directly through the fibrin sheath. Background: Chest-to-arm (CTA) tunneling technique has been described recently as an alternative option to exit site of the catheter in the infraclavicular area., Method: We report our experience with ultrasound-guided centrally inserted central catheters (CICCs) placed using CTA tunneling in six neonates. All central venous catheters were positioned with ultrasound guidance and real-time tip location., Results: There were no insertion-related complications; all devices were correctly positioned at the first attempt. During the follow-up, we found no catheter-related thrombosis, infections, or catheter malfunction. No tip position-related complications. Background: We developed a novel photoacoustic needle, which emits ultrasound produced by the photoacoustic effect. This study focused on the most common "pitfall" associated with placement during ultrasound-guided vascular access, which is misidentification of the needle tip., Methods: The study was conducted as a prospective cohort study using a questionnaire. The authors intentionally created two successful and one failed ultrasound-guided central venous catheterization videos using the photoacoustic needle on a simulator. Each of these three videos was then split into two movies for viewing, one with standard ultrasound images only and the second including the images from the photoacoustic needle, for a total of six movies., Results: Participants who were 18 anesthesiologists, 12 residents, and 10 medical students, watched each of the six movies and completed a survey whether the puncture was successful or not. In the results, there was a significant difference in the percentage of correct answers whether the movie depicted successful or failed puncture with and without the photoacoustic ultrasound ( p  = 0.0001)., Conclusion: The novel photoacoustic needle improved the ability to identify the needle tip on recorded videos. Background: Unscheduled dressing changes for central venous lines (CVLs) have been shown to increase the risk of bloodstream infections., Objective: The objective of this study is to determine if the use of an innovative dressing change kit reduces the rate of unscheduled dressing changes., Methods: This pre-post interventional study took place at a large, academic, tertiary care center in metro Detroit, Michigan, the United States. We assessed the impact of the interventional dressing change procedure kit on the rate of unscheduled dressing changes for adult patients who underwent placement of a CVL inclusive of a central catheter, peripherally inserted central catheter, or hemodialysis catheter. Data was collected for the pre-intervention cohort through electronic health records (EHRs), while data for the post-intervention cohort were collected by direct observation by trained research staff in combination with EHR data. The primary outcome was the rate of unscheduled dressing changes. Secondary outcomes included rate of unscheduled dressing changes based on admission floor type, etiology of unscheduled dressing changes, and central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs)., Results: The study included a convenience sample of 1548 CVLs placed between May 2018 and June 2022 with a matched analysis including 488 catheters in each of the pre- and post-intervention groups. The results showed that the unadjusted rate of unscheduled dressing evaluations was significantly reduced from the pre-intervention group (0.21 per day) to the post-intervention group (0.13 per day) ( p < .001). The adjusted rate ratio demonstrated the same trend at 1.00 pre- and 0.60 post-intervention ( p < .001). Stratifying the analysis based on the highest level of care showed that the intervention was effective in reducing the unadjusted rate of unscheduled dressing evaluations for both the advanced and regular medical floor subgroups pre- to post-intervention; the advanced subgroup had an reduction from 0.22 to 0.15 per day ( p = .001), while the regular medical floor subgroup had a reduction from 0.21 to 0.09 per day ( p < .001). CLABSIs were similar in both groups (0.6% vs 0.8%; p = 1.00) in pre- and post-intervention groups, respectively., Discussion: Procedural kits for central line dressing changes are effective in reducing unscheduled dressing changes and may have a role in reducing CLABSI. Background: Urgent-start peritoneal dialysis (PD) carries a similar efficacy and safety profile compared to urgent-start haemodialysis (HD) but is only sparsely applied due to resource issues and concerns of complication risks. Furthermore, few data exist on adverse outcomes associated with central venous catheter (CVC) insertions in urgent-start HD patients. Thus, we sought to compare patient and dialysis-related outcomes in patients undergoing urgent-start PD or HD., Methods: All patients initiating urgent-start PD in a tertiary research hospital in 2005-2018 were included in this retrospective, single-centre, comparative study and matched with urgent-start HD patients of similar age and chronic kidney disease aetiology. All urgent-start PDs were initiated within 72 h after catheter insertion, and urgent-start HDs were performed via a CVC. All analyses were performed at 3 months and at 1 year of follow-up, respectively., Results: Thirty-three patients who commenced urgent-start PD and 58 matched urgent-start HD control patients were included. Altogether, 26 patients (29%; PD: 36%, HD 24%) died within the 1-year follow-up, and patient survival was similar at 3 months (hazard ratio (HR): 1.15, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.35-3.81, p = 0.82) and at 1 year of follow-up (HR: 0.64, 95% CI: 0.30-1.39, p = 0.26) between the study groups. There were no differences in the total kidney replacement therapy (KRT)-related infection rate ( p = 0.66) or cumulative first-year hospital care days ( p = 0.43) between the treatment groups. Altogether, 139 CVCs were inserted during the 1-year follow-up. The number of CVCs per patient was associated with the emergence of blood culture-positive bacteraemia and increased cumulative first-year hospital care days., Conclusions: Patient survival, cumulative first-year hospital care days and total KRT-related infection rate at 3 months and 1-year follow-up are similar between urgent-start PD and urgent-start HD patients. Background: Catheter-related bloodstream infection is a well-known, severe complication of central venous catheter insertion. Studies that have evaluated the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic's influence on the incidence of catheter-related bloodstream infection in intensive care units are limited. Therefore, we conducted a retrospective study on catheter-related bloodstream infection in coronavirus disease 2019 intensive care unit with previously documented low incidence rates to evaluate the pandemic's impact., Objectives: To evaluate the impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic on catheter-related bloodstream infection incidence in the intensive care unit., Methods: All central venous catheter-inserted patients aged ⩾18 years admitted to the intensive care unit with coronavirus disease 2019 pneumonia were included. The primary outcome was the incidence of catheter-related bloodstream infection, and the secondary outcome was the detection of catheter-related bloodstream infection-causative microorganisms., Results: During the pandemic's first year, 124 patients were admitted, and 203 central venous catheters were inserted. Two patients developed catheter-related bloodstream infection. The incidence of catheter-related bloodstream infection was 0.79/1000 catheter days. Patients requiring dialysis are extremely vulnerable to infectious diseases. The high burden of comorbidities and weakened immune system due to uremia and previous immunosuppressive therapy expose the patient on dialysis to more infectious events than the general population. The infectious risk is further increased by the presence of endovascular catheters and implantable cardiologic devices. The former is generally placed as urgent vascular access for dialysis and in subjects requiring hemodialysis treatments without autogenous arteriovenous fistula. Although, antibiotic therapy is the mainstay of prosthetic device-related infections, antibiotic resistance of biofilm-residing bacteria reduces the choice of infection eradication. In these cases, the resolution of the infection process relies on the removal of the prosthetic device. Compared to CVC removal, the extraction of leads is a more complex procedure and poses an increased risk of vessel tearing. Tunnelled, cuffed central venous catheters are commonly used for the provision of haemodialysis. Internal jugular vein catheters are generally tunnelled subcutaneously to the anterolateral chest wall. However, the lateral subcutaneous tract may increase the risk of catheter migration, particularly in the setting of obesity or large breast tissue. Background: Life and quality of life on hemodialysis depends on adequate vascular access. An autogenous arteriovenous fistula (AVF) has the best performance, while the use of a central venous catheter (CVC) may have a negative impact on fistula performance and may be associated with increased systemic inflammation. Our objective is to evaluate the performance of vascular accesses in patients undergoing a chronic hemodialysis program., Methods: This is an observational, cross-sectional, and descriptive study that included patients on chronic hemodialysis for more than 90 days. Patients with an acute systemic inflammatory disease and those with acute cardiovascular illness were excluded. Clinical data, dialysis session parameters, and serum levels of inflammatory markers were evaluated., Results: A total of 91 patients were evaluated, 59 (65%) had an AVF and 32 patients (35%) had a CVC. The adequacy rate was 67%; being 67.8% with AVF and 65.6% with CVC. Among the causes of AVF inadequacy, the ones that presented the highest prevalence ratio (PR) were non-mature AVF (PR: 4.055; 95% CI: 2.017-8.151), pseudoaneurysm (PR: 6.580; 95% CI: 3.723-11.629) and presence of hematoma (PR: 4.360; 95% CI: 2.125-8.946), p  < 0.001. Among the catheter group, the causes of inadequacy with the highest PR were the presence of access thrombosis, indicating the use of thrombolytics (PR: 11.103; 95% CI: 4.746-25.977; p  < 0.001) and infection (PR: 2.984; 95% CI: 1.293-6.889; p  = 0.010). Median primary AVF patency was 72 months compared to 7 months of catheters ( p  < 0.001). There was no significant difference in serum inflammatory markers between the two groups., Conclusions: Adequacy rates of vascular accesses did not differ between the groups, but the primary and functional patency of AVF is 10 times higher than that of catheters. Background: It is well-known that infectious complications after central venous catheterisation are associated with increased mortality, length of hospital stay and costs. However, there are limited data regarding such associations for immediate insertion-related complications. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate whether major immediate insertion-related complications are associated with mortality, length of hospital stay and costs., Methods: This was a preplanned substudy to the CVC-MECH trial on immediate insertion-related complications after central venous catheterisation in the ultrasound-guided era. Patients receiving central venous catheters at Skåne University Hospital from 2 March 2019 to 31 December 2020 were prospectively included. Patient characteristics, clinical data and costs were automatically collected from medical journals and the patient administration system. Associations between major immediate insertion-related complications and mortality, length of hospital stay and costs were studied by multivariable logistic and linear regression analyses., Results: In total, 6671 patients were included, of whom 0.5% suffered major immediate insertion-related complications. Multivariable analyses, including surrogates for general morbidity, showed associations between major immediate insertion-related complications and 30-day (odds ratio 2.46 [95% CI 1.05-5.77]), 90-day (2.90 [1.35-6.21]) and 180-day (2.26 [1.05-4.83]) mortality. There were no associations between major immediate insertion-related complications and increased length of hospital stay or costs., Conclusion: This study showed that major immediate insertion-related complications, although not directly responsible for any death, were associated with increased 30-day, 90-day and 180-day mortality. Vascular access is the primary lifeline for patients with end-stage renal disease. While arteriovenous fistulas and grafts are the conventionally favored methods for dialysis therapy, certain patients may deplete these traditional vascular access options due to various reasons. In the quest for alternatives, unconventional vascular pathways could be considered, including transhepatic, trans-lumbar and trans-renal approaches. We present a case of a 61-year-old male who exhausted all the traditional vascular access options, therefore trans-renal hemodialysis catheter placement was performed. Background: Creation and maintenance of dialysis vascular access (VA) is a major component of healthcare resource utilization and cost for patients newly started on hemodialysis (HD). Different VA format arises due to patient acceptance of anticipatory care versus late preparation, and clinical characteristics. This study reviews the clinical journey and resource utilization required for different VA formats in the first year of HD., Method: Data of patients newly commenced on HD between July 2015 and June 2016 were reviewed. Patients were grouped by their VA format: (A) pre-emptive surgically created VA (SCVA), (B) tunneled central venous catheter (CVC) followed by SCVA creation, (C) long-term tunneled CVC only. Clinical events, number of investigations and procedures, hospital admissions, and incurred costs of the three groups were compared., Results: In the multivariable analysis, the cost incurred by the group A patients had no significant difference to that incurred in the group B patients ( p  = 0.08), while the cost of group C is significantly lower ( p  < 0.001). Both the 62.7% of group A with successful SCVA who avoided tunneled CVC usage, and those with a functionally matured SCVA in group B (66.1%), used fewer healthcare resources and incurred less cost for their access compared to those did not ( p  = 0.01, p  = 0.02, respectively) during the first year of HD., Conclusion: With comparable cost, a pre-emptive approach enables avoidance of tunneled CVC. Tunneled CVC only access format incurred lower cost and is suitable for carefully selected patients. The number of elderly patients initiating hemodialysis (HD) increased considerably over the past decade. Arteriovenous fistulas (AVFs) are the preferred vascular access (VA) type in most HD patients. Choice of VA for older hemodialysis patients presents a challenge. The higher incidence of comorbidities, longer AVF maturation times, risk of primary failure, risk of patency loss, and shorter life expectancy are important factors to consider. Background: Tunneled central venous catheters (CVC) are crucial in the management of children affected by short bowel syndrome (SBS). This work aims to investigate the outcomes of tunneled CVC and to identify factors influencing their survival., Methods: All the children diagnosed with SBS and undergone a procedure of insertion of a tunneled CVC from 2010 to 2019 were included. Demographic data and surgical information about the procedures were collected. Regression models and Kaplan-Meier analysis were performed to estimate the survival., Results: Eighteen patients, eight males (44%), with a median length of residual bowel measuring 72 cm (IQR 50-102 cm), were enrolled. Thirty-nine Broviac CVCs were inserted with a mean number of 2.2 CVCs per patient and 13365 line-days. The overall incidence of complications was 3.2/1000 line-days, and the incidence of central line associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI) was 1.1/1000 line-days. No episode of catheter thrombosis was reported. The median survival was 269 days (IQR 82-1814 days). The survival was negatively influenced by a younger age at insertion ( R 2  = 0.29; p  < 0.001), 2.7 Fr diameter (median survival 76 days; p  < 0.001) and the occurrence of complications (median survival 169 days; p  = 0.002). The length of residual bowel was a mild risk factor for anticipated removal (OR 1.1; CI95 1.0-1.1; p  = 0.05)., Conclusion: CVC-related complications negatively influenced the survival of the line.
