The present study describes the development and initial validation of the Multidimensional Sense of Emptiness Scale, a measure based on a theoretically and empirically grounded conceptualization of emptiness. In the first sample ( n = 541), an exploratory factor analysis yielded three factors, Sense of Inner Emptiness, Sense of Absence of Relatedness, and Sense of Meaninglessness, explaining 82.8% of the variance with 13 items. In an additional sample ( n = 212), a confirmatory factor analysis supported this three-factorial solution's stability. Furthermore, all subscales were significantly related to a single, second-order factor. In the total sample ( N = 753), subscale and full-scale items offered evidence of satisfactory internal consistency and convergent validity. We discuss study limitations and implications for counseling practice, advocacy, education, training, and research.

This study aimed to explore the effects of mattering, social media addiction, online activity, school connectedness, age, and gender on anxiety/depressive symptomatology among U.S. adolescents. A nationally representative Qualtrics panel sample consisting of 441 adolescents ( Mage = 17.3; SDage = 1.67) participated in this study. The results of a three-step hierarchical multiple regression analysis indicated that gender, social media usage, and mattering were most strongly associated with adolescent distress (i.e., anxiety/depressive symptom reporting). For the full predictive model with all six predictors added, mattering was found to significantly improve the prediction of adolescents’ anxiety/depressive symptomatology, contributing an additional 12.8% of explained variance. For this sample, adolescent girls participants reported experiencing more anxiety/depressive symptoms. Furthermore, higher levels of social media usage, indicative of an addictive stage, and lower levels of mattering were related to more significant anxiety/depressive symptomatology. Overall, mattering was found to significantly correlate with adolescent distress, online activity, problematic social media usage, and school connectedness, evidencing its importance in addressing adolescent mental health.

The Aneto, located on the Maladeta Massif (Central Pyrenees), is the largest glacier of the Pyrenees. The glacier is 675 m long, occupies an area of 48.64 ha and has a maximum altitude of 3269 m. In this study, we present a detailed area, volume, ice thickness, and Equilibrium Line Altitude reconstruction of the glacier for different periods (LIA, 1957, 1983, 2000, 2006, 2015, and 2017) and analyze its retreat. To estimate the glacier extent during the LIA, the moraines were mapped by using photo interpretation techniques whereas for the recent stages digital satellite images and aerial photographs were used. Moreover, we estimated the topography of the glacier using a simple steady-state model that assumes a perfectly plastic ice rheology, which allowed reconstructing the theoretical ice profiles of the glacier. To reconstruct the ice surface, a digital elevation model was created and combined with the bedrock topography in order to obtain the ice thickness of each stage. The results of the study reveal a considerable retreat of the Aneto Glacier since the LIA. The length of the glacier has reduced from 1970 to 675 m from LIA to2017, and its tongue has retreated from 2385 to 3029 m a.s.l. Furthermore, the glaciated area has been reduced from 245 to 48.64 ha from LIA to 2017 and the ELA has risen from 2919 to 3139 m a.s.l. The data obtained indicates that in the LIA–2017 period the glacier volume has been reduced from 82.57 m × 106 m3 to 3.48 m × 106 m3 and the maximum ice thickness from 95 to 27m. We also reconstructed the climatic conditions, showing an increase in temperature of ~1.14°C from LIA to 2017. These data reveal a vast retreat of the glacier since the LIA, which has accelerated since the 1980’s and even more since the year 2000.

Past research indicates that music preference is correlated with the need for cognition (NFC). Specifically, heavy metal fans have been found to score lower on NFC than fans of other genres. In this study, a large sample of music fans completed measures of NFC well as the Short Dark Triad scale, which measures Machiavellianism, Narcissism, and Psychopathy. Contrary to previous findings, fans of heavy metal scored significantly higher on NFC than fans of other genres. Consistent with previous research, fans of “problem music” (i.e., heavy metal and rap) scored higher on the Dark Triad. As the original work on NFC and music preference was conducted over 30 years ago, we speculate that a change in the style of heavy metal may correlate with a change in the need for cognition.

People with mental illness (MI) are overrepresented in prisons, in part, because people with MI stay in prison longer. Correctional officers (COs) use discretion in force, violations, and segregation. Crisis intervention teams (CITs) are being used in corrections to reduce disparities in sanctioning and improve safety. This quasi-experimental, mixed-methods study includes 235 CIT COs who were surveyed before and after training on knowledge of MI, stigmatizing attitudes, and perception of response options. Non-CIT ( n = 599) officers completed the same survey. Randomly selected CIT COs completed interviews 6 to 9 months following training ( n = 17). CIT COs had significantly lower stigmatizing attitudes, more mental health knowledge, and better perceptions of options following CIT training compared with non-CIT COs. This preliminary work on CIT use in prison is promising; additional work is needed to determine whether these changes result in behavior change among COs and improvements in outcomes for people with MI.

The present research examined the dual nature of the materialistic personality in terms of temporal perspective, subjective well-being, and materialism. The dual-nature model hypothesizes an anxious “mouse” type and a more flamboyant “peacock” type of materialist. Previous research has found a relationship between materialism and past-negative and present fatalistic temporal orientation. This study extended this research by examining the future-negative perspective and its relationship to materialism and well-being. It was hypothesized that the two types of materialists would have different temporal profiles. In addition, it was predicted that a future-negative perspective would mediate the relationship between materialism and well-being as was previously found with past-negative temporal orientation. The results indicated higher dark-future, future-negative, and past-negative scores with the “mouse” type materialists and higher present hedonistic scores in the “peacock” type materialists. Mediation analysis showed an indirect effect of a future-negative perspective in the relationship between materialism and well-being.

In this study, we examined the association between resilience, academic self-concept, and first-year student adjustment to college using data collected from 514 first-year undergraduate students enrolled at a medium-size, Hispanic-serving university in the southern United States. Utilizing a simultaneous multiple regression analysis, we found resilience and academic self-concept to be significant positive predictors of college adjustment for first-year students. Based on our findings, we provide suggestions for college counselors and student affairs professionals working to support students’ positive adjustment experiences.

The purpose of the current study was to investigate the psychometric properties of the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) within a sample of Hispanic college students. The sample of 223 Hispanic or Latino/a college students consisting of 142 women (65%) and 79 men (35%) was recruited from a Hispanic serving institution in the southern United States. The results of factor analysis confirmed the three-subscale structure of the MSPSS: family, friend, and a significant other.

Historically, sport, at all levels, has created an environment of silence, negativity, and even fear for lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) athletes. The purpose of this study was to identify coach characteristics and perceptions of their efficacy related to working with LGB youth athletes in the USA. An online survey was completed by n = 631 male and female head and assistant coaches from 25 different sports. Respondents filled out coaching demographics, team demographics, and the Efficacy Scale to Coach Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual Athletes.5 Results revealed statistically significant differences in perceptions of LGB athletes between younger and older coaches, coaches who had previously coached openly LGB athletes and those who have not, and coaches with no religious affiliation and those who are Baptist, Catholic, or Protestant Christian. Although there does not appear to be a clear cut demographic of coaches who perceive themselves to be more effective when coaching LGB athletes, experiences coaching LGB athletes seem to contribute to higher perceptions of coaching ability and comfort. Future studies could include interviews with coaches and athletes to more thoroughly assess the current sport team environment with regard to LGB athletes, as well as the creation of high school coach education training and resources.

This mixed-methods study examined the association between high school sport coaches’ moral disengagement and their perceived coaching efficacy, and began to explore coaches’ justifications of and consequences for the hostile aggression exhibited by their athletes. High school coaches in the United States ( N = 449) completed online surveys that included the Moral Disengagement in Sport Scale, Coaching Efficacy Scale II-High School Teams, and questions regarding their beliefs about and responses to athlete’s hostile aggressive behaviors. Hierarchical regression analyses were conducted to determine the association between coaches’ moral disengagement and their perceived coaching efficacy, and multiple analysis of variance explored differences in moral disengagement and coaching efficacy based on coaches’ justifications for athletes’ hostile aggression. Qualitative analyses involved coding coaches’ responses to questions of when they believed hostile aggression displayed by athletes was justified, and their typical responses to athletes’ hostile aggression. Results suggested that coaches’ moral disengagement was a negative predictor of their total perceived coaching efficacy, as well as specific aspects of their perceived coaching efficacy. Further, a majority of coaches indicated that hostile aggression was never acceptable or justified. Based on these results, differences in moral disengagement were found between coaches who did and did not justify athlete hostile aggression. The most common consequences for hostile aggression involved reduced playing time and additional physical conditioning. The current findings highlight the significance of coaches’ moral disengagement as it relates to their coaching, supporting a need for greater coaching education around coaching philosophies and approaches to disciplining athletes.

Background The association of trigeminal neuralgia with pontine lesions has been well documented in multiple sclerosis, and we tested the hypothesis that occipital neuralgia in multiple sclerosis is associated with high cervical spinal cord lesions. Methods We retrospectively reviewed the records of 29 patients diagnosed with both occipital neuralgia and demyelinating disease by a neurologist from January 2001 to December 2014. We collected data on demographics, clinical findings, presence of C2-3 demyelinating lesions, and treatment responses. Results The patients with both occipital neuralgia and multiple sclerosis were typically female (76%) and had a later onset (age > 40) of occipital neuralgia (72%). Eighteen patients (64%) had the presence of C2-3 lesions and the majority had unilateral symptoms (83%) or episodic pain (78%). All patients with documented sensory loss (3/3) had C2-3 lesions. Most patients with progressive multiple sclerosis (6/8) had C2-3 lesions. Of the eight patients with C2-3 lesions and imaging at onset of occipital neuralgia, five (62.5%) had evidence of active demyelination. None of the patients with progressive multiple sclerosis (3/3) responded to occipital nerve blocks or high dose intravenous steroids, whereas all of the other phenotypes with long term follow-up (eight patients) had good responses. Conclusions A cervical spine MRI should be considered in all patients presenting with occipital neuralgia. In patients with multiple sclerosis, clinical features in occipital neuralgia that were predictive of the presence of a C2-3 lesion were unilateral episodic symptoms, sensory loss, later onset of occipital neuralgia, and progressive multiple sclerosis phenotype. Clinical phenotype predicted response to treatment.

The Inventory of New College Student Adjustment (INCA) was developed to assist college student personnel in assessing adjustment difficulties experienced by first-year college students. A sample of 474 first-year college students (282 women, 59%; 192 men, 41%) enrolled in a first-year seminar course at a medium-sized 4-year university in the central southern region of the United States completed the INCA. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses confirmed a two-factor scale explaining 47.17% of the variance in scores. Convergent validity analyses support the INCA as a sufficiently valid measure suitable for use as a brief screening tool in both research and practice settings.

The research is an exploration of temporal orientation (past, present, and future) and materialism. Temporal orientation has been related to negative outcomes in the case of past orientation and both positive and negative outcomes with the present or future temporal focus. Given the well-established relationship between low-subjective well-being and materialism, it is hypothesized that materialism will be associated with past- and present-fatalistic temporal focus. Two studies were conducted using self-report with samples of 406 and 409 university students using measures of materialism, temporal orientation, and subjective well-being. The results indicated that materialism was correlated with past temporal orientation. Past-negative, rather than past-positive experiences were associated with materialism. Focus on present fatalism was also related to materialism. Past-negative and past temporal orientation was found to mediate the relationship between subjective well-being and materialism.

A growing body of research defends the contemporary relevance of 19th-century sociologist Gabriel Tarde’s theory of the social. Bruno Latour, in particular, reads Tarde’s emphasis on imitation, innovation, and opposition as a relationist alternative to Emile Durkheim’s ostensible determinism. Scholars aligned with Latour’s reconstruction have maintained that sociology and anthropology decisively abandoned Tarde’s social epistemology in favor of a Durkheimian emphasis on collective consciousness. However, such research has paid little attention to the impact of Tarde’s ideas on the early US anthropological tradition institutionalized by Franz Boas. This essay reconstructs the pervasive influence of Tarde on Boas and the early Boasian anthropologists. I maintain that Boasian engagements with the French sociologist’s work normalized Tardian imitation as a key element of early theorizations of cultural process. The maintenance of bridges and the evolution of an appropriate bridge rating system require the consideration of loads from heavy trucks. These loads can arise from a single overweight truck or multiple trucks simultaneously present, or concurrent, on a bridge. This paper presents a probabilistic modeling approach to assess the frequency and likelihood of observing various bridge loads caused by single and concurrent trucks. The approach used weigh-in-motion (WIM) data collected at or near bridges of interest to identify single and concurrent trucks and their Corresponding loads. The modeling approach was applied to bridges near three WIM stations in Florida. Results showed that in any given month, there was a 100% probability of observing at least one single or concurrent truckload that exceeded twice the minimum weight of a single overweight truck (i.e., exceeded 711,715 N or 160,000 lb). In addition, the probability of observing extreme truckloads was significantly higher when all trucks were considered, as opposed to only overweight trucks. The modeling approach can easily be adapted to the goals of the study and to any region where WIM data are available at or near the bridge(s) of interest. Results generated from the modeling approach provide probabilistic loading input for bridge maintenance planning and truck permitting policy.

Although improving police responses to mental health crises has received significant policy attention, most encounters between police and persons with mental illnesses do not involve major crimes or violence, nor do they rise to the level of requiring emergency apprehension. Here, we report on field observations of police officers handling mental health-related encounters in Chicago. Findings confirm that these encounters often occur in the "gray zone", where the problems at hand do not call for formal or legalistic interventions including arrest and emergency apprehension. In examining how police resolved such situations, we observed three core features of police work: (1) accepting temporary solutions to chronic vulnerability; (2) using local knowledge to guide decision-making; and (3) negotiating peace with complainants and call subjects. Study findings imply the need to advance field-based studies using systematic social observations of gray zone decision-making within and across distinct geographic and place-based contexts. Policy implications for supporting police interventions, including place-based enhancements of gray zone resources, are also discussed.

Newly licenced drivers are disproportionately represented in traffic injuries and crash statistics. Despite the implementation of countermeasures designed to improve safety, such as graduated driver licencing (GDL) schemes, many young drivers do not comply with road rules. This study used a reconceptualised deterrence theory framework to investigate young drivers’ perceptions of the enforcement of road rules in general and those more specifically related to GDL. A total of 236 drivers aged 17–24 completed a questionnaire assessing their perceptions of various deterrence mechanisms (personal and vicarious) and their compliance with both GDL-specific and general road rules. Hierarchical multiple regressions conducted to explore noncompliant behaviour revealed that, contrary to theoretical expectations, neither personal nor vicarious punishment experiences affected compliance in the expected direction. Instead, the most influential factors contributing to noncompliance were licence type (P2) and, counterintuitively, having previously been exposed to enforcement. Parental enforcement was also significant in the prediction of transient rule violations, but not fixed rule violations or overall noncompliance. Findings are discussed in light of several possibilities, including an increase in violations due to more time spent on the road, an ‘emboldening effect’ noted in prior studies and possible conceptual constraints regarding the deterrence variables examined in this study.

This article argues that the turn to the animal is a return to mythology. By reading multispecies scholarship as narrativization of contemporary mythology, I claim that the field voices anxieties about human futures through figures of animal others. Multispecies ethnography implicitly grapples with an apocalyptic mythos prevailing in the wake of modernity’s seemingly abandoned dreams (e.g. geopolitical peace, postcolonial development, environmental consciousness, economic prosperity, public understanding of science). I reconsider the cultural function of multispecies research through two moves. First, I read Thom van Dooren’s Theory, Culture & Society article on ‘Authentic Crows’ as such a quasi-allegorical account. Second, I develop how animal anthropology captures the contemporary mythos in an ‘affirmationist’ register that counters the pessimistic affect of late industrialism. Ultimately, the critical politics of such research may be redeemed through efforts to work closely with scientists and to render explicit the accounts’ situatedness within late-industrial mythology.

The purpose of the current study was to explore the relationship between the congruence of perceived and required leadership behavior and the effect of this relationship upon athlete satisfaction in a Chinese setting. Using a sample of volleyball players ( n = 233) and athletic directors ( n = 19), the present study examined the congruence between required and perceived leadership behavior and the resulting satisfaction of Taiwanese athletes. Analyses revealed athletes were more likely to be satisfied when their perceptions of their coaches' positive feedback behavior conformed to the expectations of their athletic directors. These results confirmed aspects of the multidimensional model of leadership in a cultural perspective.

The relationship between materialism and the self-conscious emotions (e.g., gratitude, shame, pride, and regret) was investigated with a sample of University students. Materialism was related to shame, regret, low gratitude, and hubristic pride. Shame was strongly associated with the envy component of materialism and was on the opposite end of a scale with gratitude. With pride, materialism was related to being conceited or snobbish versus having self-worth or a sense of accomplishment. The results are consistent with materialism having a weaker sense of self as hubristic pride involves a distorted, self-aggrandized sense of self, shame is associated with a sense of the self as defective, and regret is associated with the unhappiness of maximization rather than satisficing in decision making.

Why does China, geographically the third largest country in the world, have only one time zone, while Australia, nearly as big, has six? Concentrating on the Chinese case, we argue that control over time zones represents an example of “symbolic centralization,” the degree to which the central state concentrates intangible or symbolic resources that reinforce and assert state control, often invisibly, over people's everyday lives. Few state actions shape citizens' quotidian experience as fundamentally as symbolic action like setting the boundaries of time, yet political scientists have generally elided the implications of temporal authority. And those few scholars who discuss symbolic power in a systematic way have not considered how its degree of concentration varies cross-nationally. Symbolic centralization provides insights into how a distant political center may continue to shape fundamental aspects of daily life even while scoring low on resource-oriented quantitative measures of centralism. Using qualitative data and introducing a new quantitative “symbolic centralization” index, this article disaggregates the concept from the more commonly studied fiscal and political centralization through evidence from both conventional and anomalous cases.

Postcolonial science studies entails ostensibly contradictory critical and empirical commitments. Science studies scholars influenced by Bruno Latour and Isabelle Stengers embrace forms of realist, radical empiricism, while postcolonial studies scholars influenced by Jacques Derrida trace the limits of the knowable. This essay takes their common use of the term cosmopolitics as an unexpected point of departure for reconciling Derrida’s program with Stengers’s and Latour’s. I read Derrida’s critique of hospitality and Stengers’s and Latour’s ontological politics as necessary complements for conceiving a care-oriented subalternist cosmopolitics, a process of composing common worlds that remains attentive to the limits of representation.

Drawing from the science studies literature on scientific visualization, this essay examines how techniques of imaging Maya hieroglyphs have established conditions that constrain contemporary scholars’ systems of historical imagination and interpretation. I discuss imaging techniques innovated by three significant Mayanists: J. Eric S. Thompson, Merle Greene Robertson, and Linda Schele. Building on the work of historians of science Lorraine Daston and Peter Galison, I identify these Mayanist scholars’ techniques of visualization as established practices of ‘mechanical objectivity’ and ‘trained judgment’. These practices helped to reduce aesthetically complex and materially diverse ancient Maya inscriptions to the equivalent of modernist texts. I question this reduction, drawing from the work of Bruno Latour to advocate an empirical attentiveness to the located and embodied material practices that produce equivalences between objects rendered in diverse media: stone, paint, paper, and pixels. The essay thus calls for the extension of context-oriented archaeological empiricism to practices of image production.

The experiences of immediate-uptake driver's license holders (intermediate licensure at age 17 or 18 years; n = 928) and delayed-uptake driver's license holders (intermediate licensure at age 19 to 20 years, n 5 158) were explored in the Australian state of Queensland, where the graduated driver licensing (GDL) program applies to all novice drivers regardless of age. Drivers who obtained a Provisional 1 (P1; intermediate) license completed surveys exploring their experiences prelicensing and as learners, including the Behavior of Young Novice Drivers Scale (BYNDS) evaluation. Six months later, 351 drivers from this sample (n = 300 immediate-uptake driver's license holders) completed a survey exploring their experiences while driving with a P1 license. Delayed-uptake learners reported significantly more difficulty gaining driving practice, which appeared to be associated with significantly greater engagement in unsupervised driving during the learner period. Although a larger proportion of delayed-uptake novices, particularly males, reported the use of more active punishment avoidance strategies (avoiding police, talking themselves out of a ticket) during the P1 license phase, no significant differences in the BYNDS scores during the learner and P1 license phases were found by license uptake category. Delayed-uptake novices reported more difficulty in meeting GDL requirements and placed themselves at increased risk by driving unsupervised during the learner license phase. Additional efforts, such as mentoring programs, that can support delayed-uptake learners in meeting their GDL obligations merit further consideration to allow this group of novice drivers to gain the full benefits of the GDL program and to reduce their risk of harm in the short term.

There is mounting evidence that mental health courts (MHCs) reduce criminal recidivism and increase use of mental health services. Although not yet empirically tested, procedural justice has been proposed as one potential mechanism that promotes change and improves outcomes for MHC participants. In this article, we investigate MHC participants’ perceptions of procedural justice in interactions with MHC staff as well as the role of procedural justice in participants’ MHC program experiences. Participants from two MHC programs were invited to complete quantitative measures and a semistructured interview about their MHC experiences and perceptions of procedural justice. Univariate and bivariate analyses and qualitative analysis were used to examine the data. Findings indicate that MHC participants perceive a moderate level of procedural justice in interactions with MHC team members. However, perceptions of procedural justice are complex, involve multiple actions and inaction, and are affected by all members of the MHC team, not just the judge. Although scores on quantitative measures of procedural justice do not differ by court, participant perceptions discussed in semistructured interviews do vary. Implications for practice, policy, and research are discussed.

Objective: The aim of this study is to assess the effect of proximity and time pressure on accurate and effective visual search during medication selection from a computer screen. Background: The presence of multiple similar objects in proximity to a target object increases the difficulty of a visual search. Visual similarity between drug names can also lead to selection error. The proximity of several similarly named drugs within a visual field could, therefore, adversely affect visual search. Method: In Study 1, 60 nonpharmacy participants selected a target drug name from an array of mock drug packets shown on a computer screen, where one or four similarly named nontargets might be present. Of the participants, 30 completed the task with a time constraint, and the remainder did not. In Study 2, the same experiment was repeated with 28 pharmacy staff. Results: In Study 1, the proximity of multiple similarly named nontargets within the specified visual field reduced selection accuracy and increased reaction times in the nonpharmacists. Time constraint also had an adverse effect. In Study 2, the pharmacy participants showed increased reaction times when multiple nontargets were present, but the time constraint had no effect. There was no effect of Tall Man lettering. Conclusion: The presence of multiple similarly named medications in close proximity to a target medication increases the difficulty of the visual search for the target. Tall Man lettering has no impact on this adverse effect. Application: The widespread use of the alphabetical system in medication storage increases the risk of proximity-based errors in drug selection.

The graduated driver licensing (GDL) program in Queensland, Australia, was considerably enhanced in July 2007. This paper explores the compliance of young learner and provisional (intermediate) drivers with current GDL requirements and general road rules. Unsupervised driving, learner logbook accuracy, and experiences of punishment avoidance were explored as was speeding as a provisional driver. Participants (609 females, 423 males; M = 17.43 years) self-reported their sociodemographic characteristics, driving behaviors, and licensing experiences as learners. Six months later, a subset of participants (238 females, 105 males) completed another survey that explored their provisional behaviors and experiences. Although the majority of participants reported compliance with both the GDL requirements and general road rules, such as stopping at red lights on their learner license, a considerable proportion reported speeding. Furthermore, they reported becoming less compliant during the provisional phase, particularly with speed limits. Self-reported speeding was predicted by the following variables: younger age at licensure, being in a relationship, driving unsupervised, submitting inaccurate learner logbooks, and speeding as a learner. Enforcement and education countermeasures should focus on curtailing noncompliance, targeting speeding in particular. Novice drivers should be encouraged to comply with all road rules, including speed limits, and safe driving behaviors should be developed and reinforced during the learner and early provisional periods. Novice drivers have been found to model their parents’ driving, and parents are pivotal in regulating novice driving. It is vital that young novice drivers and parents alike be encouraged to comply with all road rules, including GDL requirements.

Objective: Two potential causes of dispensing error; neighbourhood density and time pressure, were analysed using a lab-based dispensing task.Method: 60 participants were asked to select a target drug name from a selection of mock drug packets shown on a computer screen, where one or four similar non-targets might be present. Half of the group (30) completed the task under a 12 minute time limit.Results: The number of similar drug names present had a significant impact on performance; four non-targets increased reaction times and decreased accuracy in comparison to trials where only one non-target was present. An additional deficit in accuracy associated with the imposed time limit was found.Conclusion: The reported findings indicate that the number of similarly named products in proximity to a target medication can have an adverse effect upon selection accuracy. This adverse effect is increased when a time constraint is applied.

This essay traces the ontological and political limits of Bruno Latour’s conceptualization of the ‘common world’. Latour formulates this concept in explicating how modernist scientific and political institutions require a metaphysical foundation that is anti-democratic in rigidly partitioning nature from society. In the stead of nature/society, Latour proposes a ‘cosmopolitics’ in which we recognize our embroilment in systems comprised of heterogeneous human and nonhuman actors, and seek to innovate appropriate procedures for governing such systems and composing a more peaceful common world. However, feminist and postcolonialist science studies scholars have argued that Latour’s project fails to apprehend the experiences of subjects marginalized by scientific and political structures of representation. Thus, science studies scholars seem to be faced with a problem; to avoid ontological dissonance and contradiction in integrating Latour’s program with feminist and postcolonialist critiques we must defer his claims that the cosmopolitical program entirely supersedes contemporary social movements and oppositional politics. I offer an alternative. Namely, I argue that Latour’s formulations of cosmopolitics’ procedures and the common world’s boundaries actually require an incipient model of the limits of democratic representation. I modify Latour’s proposed system of representation by reading it against Dipesh Chakrabarty’s concept of ‘subaltern pasts’, which are unassimilable to academic historical narratives (in their attribution of agency to nonhuman gods, for example). This reading emphasizes how Latour does not adequately theorize and politicize the partially autonomous reality of those excluded from the common world and thus fails to attend to how this externalization replicates the violence of modernist representational institutions.

The Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) program was first developed to reduce violence in encounters between the police and people with mental illness as well as provide improved access to mental health services. Although there is overwhelming popular support for this intervention, scant empirical evidence of its effectiveness is available—particularly whether the program can reduce the use of force. This investigation seeks to fill this gap in the literature by exploring the factors that influence use of force in encounters involving people with mental illness and evaluating whether CIT can reduce the likelihood of its use.

Category: Midfoot/Forefoot Introduction/Purpose: The average intramedullary diameter of the proximal phalanges of the foot has not been well documented in the literature. This dimension has important implications for surgical fixation devices, such as intramedullary screws. By design, intramedullary fixation devices rely on endosteal fit to provide stability. The precise intramedullary diameter is not readily identifiable on plain radiographs. A better understanding of the average diameter of the proximal phalanges of the foot can assist surgeons in surgical planning and appropriate screw diameter selection to provide more satisfactory patient outcomes. Methods: Twenty below-knee cadaveric specimens were dissected to expose each proximal phalanx. A sagittal saw was used to transect the diaphysis at its narrowest portion. The dorsal to plantar and medial to lateral diameters were measured using a digital manometer. Results: The average diameter dorsal to plantar for each digit was 6.25 ± 2.24 mm, 3.61 ± 1.25 mm, 2.94 ± 0.70 mm, 2.72 ± 0.77 mm, and 2.48 ± 0.80 mm, respectively. The average diameter medial to lateral for each digit was 7.83 ± 2.13 mm, 3.08 ± 0.93 mm, 2.47 ± 0.74 mm, 2.33 ± 0.73 mm, and 2.62 ± 0.69 mm, respectively. The overall average diameter for toes one through five was 7.04 ± 1.95 mm, 3.35 ± 1.04 mm, 2.71 ± 0.66 mm, 2.52 ± 0.71 mm, and 2.55 ± 0.63 mm, respectively. Conclusion: Understanding the intramedullary diameters of the proximal phalanges of the foot is a valuable tool when utilizing intramedullary surgical stabilization. The hallux proximal phalanx demonstrated the largest, and most variable, diameter, which could make selection intramedullary fixation difficult. In addition, the hallux proximal phalanx may lend itself better to 2 smaller fixation devices rather than one larger one. The lesser phalanges demonstrated smaller diameters more consistently, which is more amenable to a single smaller (2.5 mm) intramedullary device. This data can provide surgeons with an expected intramedullary diameter during surgical planning.

Police agencies across the country are struggling to respond to significant number of persons with serious mental illness, who are landing on their doorsteps with sometimes tragic consequences. Arguably, the most widely adopted approach, the Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) model, is a specialized police-based program designed to improve officers’ ability to safely and effectively respond to mental health crises. Conducting research on CIT is challenging; thus, the evidence base is limited. In this article, the author reviews the emerging literature, present a conceptual model of CIT effectiveness, and describe a study of CIT in Chicago. Findings from Chicago suggest that CIT is increasing linkage to services and reducing use of force in encounters with persons with mental illness. Lessons learned are discussed.

Illegal street racing has received increased attention in recent years from road safety professionals and the media as jurisdictions in Australia, Canada, and the United States have implemented laws to address the problem, which primarily involves young male drivers. Although some evidence suggests that the prevalence of illegal street racing is increasing, obtaining accurate estimates of the crash risk of this behavior is difficult because of limitations in official data sources. Although crash risk can be explored by examining the proportion of incidents of street racing that result in crashes, or the proportion of all crashes that involve street racing, this paper reports on the findings of a study that explored the riskiness of involved drivers. The driving histories of 183 male drivers with an illegal street racing conviction in Queensland, Australia, were compared with a random sample of 183 male Queensland drivers with the same age distribution. The offender group was found to have significantly more traffic infringements, license sanctions, and crashes than the comparison group. Drivers in the offender group were more likely than the comparison group to have committed infringements related to street racing, such as speeding, “hooning,” and offenses related to vehicle defects or illegal modifications. Insufficient statistical capacity prevented full exploration of group differences in the type and nature of earlier crashes. It was concluded, however, that street racing offenders generally can be considered risky drivers who warrant attention and whose risky behavior cannot be explained by their youth alone.

We report placental cryptococcosis in a woman with multi-drug resistant human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. She received antifungal therapy for cryptococcal meningitis prior to delivery. Cesarean section was performed with delivery of a single full-term male infant. There was no evidence of HIV or cryptococcal infection in the infant. The placenta grossly showed multiple white nodules. Microscopically, numerous encapsulated budding yeasts, morphologically consistent with cryptococci, were identified in the intervillous space and, to a lesser extent, in the chorionic villi. Cryptococcal infections are not uncommon, but only 2 cases of placental cryptococcosis have been reported. Our case is the 1st account documenting cryptococcal organisms within the chorionic villi, and yet there was no evidence of infection in the infant. Mother-to-fetal transmission of cryptococcal infection is not well defined. We review the literature and discuss its possible mechanisms.

In this study a multizone model of spark-ignition engine combustion is validated and used to predict the thermal efficiency and NO x emissions of the engine. The model is validated against an engine map obtained from an extensive series of experiments. An optimizing algorithm based on particle swarm concepts is applied to the model to find a trade-off between efficiency and NO x emissions using a predefined cost function. Optimization is performed for three cases, each of which progressively includes more variables for optimization. A further constrained optimization case is performed with constant values of several of the variables set at the average values found in the three prior cases. These variables are the ones that change over a small domain. The results show the potential improvement in efficiency while achieving remarkably low NO x emissions. They emphasize the importance of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) at high compression ratio and high loads when the maximum in-cylinder pressures are very high. They also suggest some strategies for valve timings that use internal EGR (residual gas) and move towards different compression and expansion ratios (Atkinson cycle).

The current paper describes a study of combustion in the Bishop rotary valve engine by means of computation simulations. The combustion model was developed for this research at speeds up to 18 000 r/min and the results from the simulation were compared with experimental data. Sensitivity studies were performed in order to investigate the parametric effects on the combustion simulation of the engine. The major finding of this study was that convection of the flame kernels occurs and has a strong influence on the performance of the engine. The results indicated some insights as to how the combustion process of the engine can be improved.

Road traffic injury is one of the most significant global public health issues of the 21st century. The extent to which negative, fear-evoking messages represent effective persuasive strategies remains a contentious public and empirical issue. Nevertheless, negative, fear-based appeals represent a frequently used approach in Australasian road safety advertising. The authors conducted a series of focus groups with 16 licensed drivers to explore the potential utility of appeals to emotions other than fear. More specifically, they sought to explore the utility of positive emotional appeals, such as those incorporating humor. The themes emerging from the qualitative analysis suggested that both emotion and the provision of strategies are key components contributing to the overall persuasiveness of a road safety advertisement. Overall, it appears there is support for researchers and health advertising practitioners to provide further attention to the role that positive emotional appeals might play in future campaigns.

Undergraduate ( n = 561) and graduate ( n = 104) students at a large mid-Atlantic university were surveyed to determine their usage patterns and beliefs about the climate of a newly constructed student recreation center (SRC) on their campus. Analyses attempted to identify differences between those students who used the facility ( n = 547) and those who did not ( n = 118) in relation to gender, age, year on campus, stage of change for exercise, and motivational orientation. Results revealed that SRC users were at higher stages along the transtheoretical model (Prochaska & DiClemente, 1983) and were significantly more likely to have participated in high school athletics than non-users. Non-users were significantly more likely to live off-campus, smoke, and be female than SRC users. The discussion offers suggestions for enticing non-users to exercise and use the facility, and feel more comfortable while doing so.

Two major emerging automotive technologies are the continued development of hybrid-electric drivetrains and telematics-enabled (or ‘intelligent’) vehicles capable of garnering and utilizing information about the traffic environment in which the vehicles are operating. The significant costs of each of these technologies are located internal to the vehicle (i.e. the powertrain) in the former case and external to the vehicle (i.e. the road and communication infrastructure) in the latter. In this paper, a simple algorithm is proposed for shaping the velocity profile of an intelligent vehicle subjected to different degrees of traffic information. The fuel consumption of this intelligent vehicle is then compared to a hybrid vehicle with a configuration optimized for an urban drive cycle under the constraint that its performance must match the conventional vehicle it is replacing. This provides some perspective on the extent to which telematics can be used to improve fuel economy relative to the best possible hybrid alternative. Finally, the fuel consumption of an intelligent-hybrid vehicle is investigated; however, the optimal use of information and switching control in the hybrid drivetrain remains an unsolved problem to date.

The role of hostility in personality disorder (Pd) traits was explored using the Buss-Durkee Hostility Inventory. Stepwise multiple regression analyses were conducted to ascertain the relative contributions of the eight hostility scales. The criterion variables were the personality disorder scales of the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory. The participants were 158 first year male and female university students. The results show that Resentment (covert hostility) explains large proportions of variances in borderline, avoidant, schizotypal, passive-aggressive, obsessive-compulsive, and schizoid disorder traits. Verbal hostility (overt hostility) is associated with antisocial, histrionic, and narcissistic Pd traits. Suspiciousness contributes relatively large variances in paranoid disorder traits, whereas guilt is the dominant aspect of dependent Pd traits. The results are explained with reference to the agreeableness versus antagonism facets of the Five-Factor model of personality and Beck's schema construct.

Construction of narrow-gap double skin components requires, at some stage, blind welding from one side. During construction, due to thermal distortion, the hidden stiffeners (spacers or stringers) may move sufficiently far from their designated locations that assembly welds, made from one side, could miss the stringers completely. Thus, a real-time sensor capable of identifying and accurately locating spacer edges beneath the outer skin is required. Outer skin magnetic properties and plate/spacer separation seriously influence the capabilities of the best candidate detecting methods. Initial trials were undertaken using a non-destructive testing (NDT) eddy current method to detect beneath aluminium plate. Probe design and construction concentrated on air-cored absolute coils, on which finite element analysis (FEA) was used to predict electrical response. When the refined detector system was tested on magnetic material (mild steel), it was found to be preferable if a static magnetic field was applied to the plate component. Applied magnetism had a profound effect on coil field penetration and hence detectability (maximum plate thickness rose swiftly from 3mm, unmagnetized, to over 12mm, magnetized). As a sensor, the eddy current detector was shown to be capable of finding subcutaneous edges in both aluminium and mild steel fabrications. What has been developed is a sensor simply requiring computer-controlled movement to allow completely automatic hidden edge finding.

The prognostic significance of malignant cells in the peritoneal washings of patients with pancreatic adenocarcinoma remains poorly defined. Prior reports suggest that positive peritoneal cytology (PPC) is associated with advanced disease and reduced survival. To determine the prognostic value of PPC in patients with pancreatic cancer, we retrospectively reviewed our database between July 1987 and September 2002 and identified 168 patients who had undergone exploration for potentially resectable pancreatic cancer with peritoneal washings performed at the time of exploration. One hundred thirty-five patients underwent resection; 33 were considered unresectable. PPC was reported for 27 patients (16.1%): 13 (9.6%) in the resected and 14 (42.4%) in the unresected group. Median time to macroscopically detected recurrence in the resected group was not significantly different in the PPC versus negative peritoneal cytology (NPC) patients (10 vs 12 months, P = 0.46). Median overall survival of patients with PPC versus NPC approached, but did not reach, significance (15 vs 19 months, P = 0.055). Peritoneal cytology status was not associated with administration of chemoradiation, margin status, antecedent fine-needle aspiration, stage, or site of recurrence. These data suggest that malignant cells in peritoneal washings of patients with potentially resectable pancreatic adenocarcinoma should not preclude resection. Long-term survival may be achieved, therefore aggressive treatment should strongly be considered.

Survival after curative resection for pancreatic adenocarcinoma remains poor; an important prognostic factor is lymph node (LN) status. Recent reports have established the number of LN examined as a separate prognostic factor in many malignancies. We retrospectively reviewed the charts of 128 patients undergoing pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) for pancreatic cancer and obtained information such as overall survival (OS), disease-free survival (DFS), tumor characteristics, preoperative carbohydrate antigen (CA) 19–9, sex, and age. The ratio of metastatic to examined LN (LNR) was determined, and OS and DFS were analyzed in relation to the three groups: LNR = 0, LNR < 0.15, and LNR > 0.15. The median number of LN collected was 17. There were 46 NO patients (median = 12) and 83 N1 patients (median = 19). The number of LN harvested had no impact on OS or DFS in the N0 or N1 patient populations. When LNR was examined as a continuous variable, it had a borderline impact on OS ( P = 0.068). Examination of LNR by three groups showed an impact on OS ( P = 0.037) and DFS ( P = 0.013). After curative PD for pancreatic cancer, the ratio of metastatic to examined lymph nodes is an important prognostic factor and should be evaluated in stratification schemes for future clinical trials investigating adjuvant treatments.

Increased expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) by pancreatic cancer correlates with poor survival. The significance of VEGF in biliary and pancreatic secretions in periampullary cancers is unknown. Bile and pancreatic juice samples were collected from patients undergoing pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD). Idle speed control remains one of the most challenging problems in the automotive control field owing to its multiple-input, multiple-output structure and the step nature of the disturbances applied. In this paper a simulation model is described for a 4.0 l production engine at idle which includes the standard bypass air valve and spark advance dynamics, as well as the e ects of operating point on cycle-by-cycle combustion-generated torque variations. A model predictive control scheme is then developed for the idle bypass valve and spark advance. The idle speed control algorithm is based on rejecting the torque disturbance using model predictive control for the bypass valve duty cycle while minimizing the transient e ects of the disturbance by adjusting the spark advance. Simulation results are presented to demonstrate the effects of different elements of the controller such as levels of spark offset from minimum spark advance for best torque at idle and feedforward load previews. Compensation of the effects of cyclic variation in combustion torque is also implemented in the controller and its benefits are discussed.

Category: Ankle Introduction/Purpose: The anterior incision is commonly used for total ankle replacement (TAR), and anterior approach ankle arthrodesis. Historically, the anterior incision has demonstrated a high incidence of complications, specifically with early generation TAR. Modern TAR designs have provided instrumentation and techniques that better respect the vulnerability of the anterior soft tissues, potentially reducing the incidence of anterior incision related complications. To our knowledge, anterior wound healing rates have not been evaluated in the context of modern anterior approach ankle arthrodesis and arthroplasty. The purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare the incisional healing and complications of the anterior approach for ankle arthrodesis and arthroplasty. Methods: This was an IRB-approved retrospective review of wound healing and complications among 304 patients who underwent primary TAR or ankle arthrodesis via the anterior approach between August 1, 2011 and August 31, 2015. Of the 304 patients, 191 (62.8%) underwent TAR and 113 (37.2%) underwent arthrodesis. The surgical approach, intraoperative soft tissue handling, and postoperative protocol for the first 30 days was the same between groups. Demographics, clinical characteristics of the wound healing, and neurovascular status were analyzed using two-sample t-tests or Wilcoxon rank sum tests for continuous variables and chi-square or Fisher’s exact tests for categorical variables. To diminish the effect of selection bias, a subgroup analysis was performed comparing 91 TAR patients matched to an equal number of ankle arthrodesis patients based upon gender, age, diabetes, and smoking status. Results: The mean follow-up was 11.8 (range, 1.4 to 62.2) months. Overall, 19.7% of patients experienced delayed wound healing greater than 30 days, 15.8% required office-based wound care, 12.2% had a wound infection, 15.1% were prescribed antibiotics, 9.5% underwent wound debridement in the office, 4.6% had nerve injury, and 0.7% had a vascular injury. Implant revision or removal occurred in 10.5%, with a bias towards hardware removal in ankle arthrodesis. In the entire group of 304 patients, there was no difference between TAR and arthrodesis in risk of incisional wound challenges or complications nor neurovascular injury. In the subgroup matched for gender, age, diabetes status and smoking history there was no difference in outcomes. Conclusion: In this large cohort of 304 patients undergoing anterior approach to the ankle, postoperative complication rates were constant at all levels of analysis, with no difference seen between anterior ankle arthrodesis or ankle approach total ankle arthroplasty. This suggests that the primary determinates of complications were neither the demographic nor implant factors considered herein. The anterior ankle incision has a documented wound complication risk, regardless of the surgical procedure, and any modifiable risk factors remain elusive.

This paper proposes a radial basis function (RBF) based approach for the fuel injection control problem. In the past, neural controllers for this problem have centred on using a cerebellar model articulation controller (CMAC) type network with some success. The current production engine control units also use look-up tables in their fuel injection controllers, and if adaptation is permitted to these look-up tables the overall effect closely mimics the CMAC network. Here it is shown that an RBF network with significantly fewer nodes than a CMAC network is capable of delivering superior control performance on a mean value engine model simulation. The proposed approach requires no a priori knowledge of the engine systems, and on-line learning is achieved using gradient descent updates. The RBF network is then implemented on a four-cylinder engine and, after a minor modification, outperforms a production engine control unit.

Objectives: To evaluate the effectiveness of guidelines with or without one-to-one educational outreach visits by community pharmacists in improving general practice prescribing for non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Methods: Cluster randomised trial of 20 general practices within Avon, England. Practices were randomised to three groups: control; mailed guidelines; mailed guidelines plus educational outreach visits. General practitioners (GPs) in the latter group received two one-to-one outreach visits from community pharmacists. Changes in prescribing were measured using outcomes derived from prescribing analysis and cost (PACT) data. The primary outcome measure was change in the volume of prescribing for ibuprofen, diclofenac and naproxen as a percentage of total NSAID prescribing. Six secondary outcomes included other measures of prescribing quality and volume. A cost-benefit analysis was performed. Results: No significant differences were observed for the primary outcome measure: practices receiving outreach visits prescribed only 2.1% [95% confidence interval (CI): -0.8 to 5.0] more of the three recommended NSAIDs than the control practices did and 1.6% (95% CI: -1.4 to 4.7) more than practices that received guidelines only. Following adjustment for multiple comparisons, only one secondary outcome showed a statistically significant difference between the groups: the proportion of prescribing of the five most frequently used drugs was 2.2% (95% CI: 0.9 to 3.6) higher in the educational outreach group compared with the control group. A net increase in costs was shown with both interventions. Conclusions: Although good prescribing at baseline in the participating practices limited the capacity for improvement, this trial provides no evidence that guidelines with or without educational outreach visits from community pharmacists lead to substantial improvements in prescribing behaviour.

The paradox of distress expression is that expression of negative feelings is both a sign of distress and a possible means of coping with that distress. This article describes research illustrating the paradox of distress expression. It reviews evidence concerning 3 possible mechanisms by which expression might alleviate distress, focusing on the role of expression in (a) reducing distress about distress, (b) facilitating insight, and (c) affecting interpersonal relationships in a desired way. The authors conclude by highlighting the circumstances under which expression is most likely to be adaptive. Overall, the authors argue that expression of negative feelings is adaptive to the extent that it leads to some kind of resolution involving the source or significance of distress.

The utility of coping strategies, stress, and emotion as predictors of personality disorder pathology was examined by exposing subjects to a set of stressful scenarios. It was predicted that personality disorder (PD) would be associated with less adaptive coping strategies, higher stress, low control, and low perception of coping efficacy. In general, the results indicated strong correlations between PD and the coping strategies of escape-avoidance and accepting responsibility and weak or negative associations with the problem-solving and positive reappraisal strategies. Personality disorder was associated with stress, negative emotions, and low control/efficacy. The coping/emotion profiles are useful in elaborating and discriminating similarities and differences between PDs.
