Violence against female sex workers (FSWs) perpetrated by their intimate (i.e., non-commercial) partners, particularly against FSWs living with HIV, is understudied. Stigma can deplete the economic resources, social relationships, and mental well-being of stigmatized people, which may increase their intimate partner violence (IPV) risk. We quantitatively assessed relationships between HIV stigma and sex work stigma and IPV victimization among FSWs living with HIV in the Dominican Republic ( n  = 266). Enacted HIV stigma, in the form of job loss, and anticipated HIV stigma, in the form of fear of exclusion by family, were associated with increased IPV risk. Potential association mechanisms, including increased economic vulnerability and social isolation, and programmatic responses are discussed.

District court judges who make final determinations in domestic violence protective order (DVPO) cases in North Carolina indicate often using heuristics, such as the presence of visible injury, to guide their assessment of violence severity. This approach is concerning as it minimizes nonphysical intimate partner violence. We conducted a thematic analysis of DVPO plaintiff complaints to identify the types of nonphysical vioence described and its effects on plaintiff health outcomes. Most case files included descriptions of nonphysical violence and plaintiffs described fear as a significant mental health outcome. Findings highlight the potentially deleterious impact of nonphysical violence on the well-being of DVPO plaintiffs.

Gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM) are disproportionately affected by poor mental health compared to their heterosexual counterparts. One factor that may increase mental health problems among MSM is intimate partner violence (IPV) victimization. The objectives of this study are to (a) describe the prevalence of different forms of IPV victimization experienced by MSM living with HIV in Guatemala City and (b) examine the relationship between IPV victimization and mental health. We analyzed cross-sectional survey data from a cohort of MSM living with HIV in Guatemala City ( n  = 374) to describe the burden of IPV, including physical, sexual, and emotional IPV. We then examined relationships between lifetime IPV and each form of recent IPV (past 12 months) with self-reported anxiety and depression using multivariable logistic regression. Over a quarter (27.3%) of the participants screened positive for anxiety and nearly one fifth (17.9%) screened positive for depression. Over a quarter of the participants (28.6%) reported ever having experienced any IPV victimization and 8.8% reported having experienced any form of recent IPV. In multivariable analyses, participants who experienced any form of lifetime IPV had roughly twice the odds of experiencing anxiety (OR: 1.86; 95% CI = [1.03, 3.38]) and depression (OR: 2.02; 95% CI = [1.02, 3.99]) compared to those who had not. Participants who experienced recent emotional IPV had over seven times the odds of experiencing anxiety (OR: 7.23; 95% CI = [1.46, 38.85]) compared to those who had not. MSM living with HIV in Guatemala experience a high burden of anxiety, depression, and IPV victimization. Those participants who had experienced lifetime IPV and recent emotional IPV were significantly more likely to screen for anxiety and depression. To improve their mental health, HIV clinics and other health services should provide support for MSM who have experienced IPV victimization.

Objectives: As type 2 diabetes prevalence increases across Latin America, understanding local approaches to coping with diabetes stress is essential to providing care that incorporates patients' values and preferences. This study explored a local phenomenon, " no le doy mente " (I don't think about it), used by adults with type 2 diabetes in the Dominican Republic to cope with diabetes stress., Methods: We conducted 19 qualitative in-depth interviews with adults with type 2 diabetes (10 men, 9 women) recruited from one rural clinic. Using an inductive analytic approach including iterative coding, memos, and matrices, we identified reasons, strategies, and perceived benefits of not thinking about type 2 diabetes among participants., Results: Participants described not thinking about diabetes as an active process to maintain a sense of normalcy despite significant life changes following diagnosis. They avoided thinking about diabetes by staying busy, proactively managing type 2 diabetes through diet and medication, and turning to their faith. Participants perceived that enacting no le doy mente helped to protect their overall health and well-being., Discussion: Future research should investigate provider perceptions of no le doy mente to align patient and provider communication and mindfulness-based stress reduction as a way to support people with type 2 diabetes avoid dwelling on negative thoughts about diabetes.

Objectives: To identify challenges and coping strategies of young people with Type 1 diabetes (T1D) and their families in Bolivia through qualitative analysis of interviews with beneficiaries of Centro Vivir con Diabetes (CVCD), a diabetes health center supported by the International Diabetes Federation Life for a Child (LFAC) program., Methods: Eighteen young people aged 14-33 and at least one caregiver participated in semi-structured interviews in five cities in Bolivia from May to June 2016. Interviews were recorded, transcribed, and analyzed using inductive thematic analysis., Results: Participants described needing guidance at diagnosis and facing stigma in communities. Young people expressed that life with T1D was 'la vida normal' (a normal life), although interpretations of normalcy varied. For some, 'la vida normal' meant resistance to T1D; for others it indicated acceptance., Discussion: Access to interdependent spheres of support allowed young people to form a new normal around T1D. Receiving supplies through the CVCD/LFAC partnership maintained family connection to clinical care, CVCD education helped families share in T1D management, and peer support mitigated stigma for young people. Programs like CVCD that combine supply-based aid with clinical education for whole families, create effective support for young people with T1D in low- and middle-income countries.

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is changing the burden of disease across Latin America. In this formative, qualitative study, we explored experiences of T2D diagnosis and management among adults in rural Dominican Republic. We conducted 28 in-depth interviews (12 men, 16 women) and used inductive analysis to explore the emotional burden of T2D and identify coping strategies. We found that stress relating to T2D began at diagnosis and persisted throughout management. Stress was produced by concerns about healthy food and medication access, fears about illness-induced injury, and the cyclical process of experiencing stress. Participants identified diabetes care and free medication services as external stress-reducers. Internally, participants' mitigated stress by not thinking about diabetes (" no dar mente"). Our study highlights the importance of a contextualized understanding of diabetes-related stress and the need for individual, clinic, and community-level interventions to reduce stressors and improve health outcomes among adults with T2D.

Hematopoietic stem cell transplant survivors often share advice with patients undergoing this difficult treatment. We content analyzed narratives written by 59 transplant survivors given the opportunity to share advice with patients. Analyses described categories of advice they shared and evaluated their perceptions of the helpfulness of advice they had received. We found nine advice categories and evidence for variation in their perceived helpfulness, especially for advice to "be your own advocate," "have someone you can rely on," and "think positive." Findings suggest the need to investigate how seemingly innocuous advice can be unhelpful and potentially distressing to some patients.
