This article advances a research agenda from analyzing the state of the Venezuelan scientific production, to promote its recovery and boosting it. Bibliometric indicators extracted from Scopus, Sci-Val, Scimago and Web of science are used to diagnose Venezuela’s ranking and its variations during the past years. We include suggestions to develop a completer and more effective diagnostic, and strategies that may aid in reverting the situation.

The Library and Information Science discipline is in constant flux, facing myriad impediments with the development of technology. Per se, the field introduced information and communications technology into its curriculum which has changed librarians’ roles in information handling. Moreover, the integration of the term ‘information’ changed the nomenclature thereby giving a new name of Information Science/Studies, embracing an enormous range of subjects. The present study investigates the previous and current skills of alumni at the Department of Library and Information Science, College of Basic Education, Kuwait. Descriptive analysis of the distributed survey revealed frequencies and percentages data on participants’ gender, marital status, age, grade point average, certificate obtained, employment sector, years of experience, and salary. Qualitative data revealed comments on employment issues, difficulties faced, and the Department of Library and Information Science curriculum. The findings suggested that the majority of the alumni have benefited from their major as their employment is relevant (84%), it is within their specialisation and most of them (56%) are employed in a library setting. The most frequently learned skill is ethics (54%), and the skills that needed improvement are library skills and English language proficiency. The research data initiated a list of skills required and organisations employing the alumni. It is recommended that LIS alumni should be equippedwith multi-tasking skills to work at the job market institutions, and that LIS schools should start offering a PhD qualification in Kuwait. This research contributes to decisions in curriculum updating from the viewpoint of alumni to meet the requirements of the job market. The research is the first study to collect data from LIS alumni in Kuwait at CBE, PAAET and realises their concerns. Departments sharing a similar curriculum can benefit as the research is an initial step that should be regularly taken to update the curricula.

Traditionally, publication citation networks are regarded as acyclic, that is, no loops in the network as an earlier published article cannot cite a later published article. However, due to the accessibility of pre-print versions of articles, there might be some loops in a publication citation network. This article presents a descriptive statistic on loops in publication citation networks of computer science and physics by employing a network-based indicator, namely, strongly connected component (SCC). By employing computer science and physics disciplines publications from the Web of Science database as examples, this article examines the count of loops, how the count changes over time and how the count relates to the published year difference between publications within the loop in the citation network. Some common structural patterns are also extracted and analysed; we observe that the two disciplines share the most frequent patterns though there exist some minor differences. Moreover, we find that self-citations in terms of authors, authors’ institutions and journals contribute to the formation of loops in publication citation networks.

This article is the first part of a review of the Business Information Review Annual Survey, which has been published annually since 1991. The article explores technological change as it has been revealed by the surveys. It uses a combination of content and thematic analysis to develop six key themes, which are discussed by reference to the original surveys: the telling case of CD-ROMs; the Internet and the World Wide Web; changing information formats; the impact of digital technologies on information work; intranets and knowledge management (KM); and newer technologies. The article aims to summarise and consolidate longitudinal trends revealed by the survey, act as a guide to the rich data contained within the surveys themselves and provide a testament to the wealth of professional experience captured in the BIR Annual Surveys. Its findings relate to the nature of technological change and the incorporation of new technologies by the information and KM profession.

This article presents a brief review of the history, main achievements and challenges faced during the 40-year evolution of science popularization (SP) in China that began with the reform and opening up process. Four distinct phases are noted in the development of SP: institutional reconstruction, structural maturity, fast development of a legal system and comprehensive strategic upgrading. China has achieved much during these phases in the areas of SP mechanisms, funding, personnel, infrastructure, resources and civic scientific literacy. At the same time, it is also facing challenges in strategic positioning, the effectiveness of SP policies, internationalization, the construction of the SP system and scientific culture. Evidently, the government's prioritization of SP is critical for advancing this initiative. In the future, under the government's leadership, the following directions should be pursued: expanding and improving civic scientific literacy through a focus on internationalization; promoting scientific cooperation from a global perspective; establishing a long-term SP mechanism; and building a service platform to promote ‘smart SP’. SP in China is clearly on the right track and will continue to advance in the future.

This article conducts a bibliometric analysis of published research on the topic of franchising during the last three decades (1988–2017). This analysis is based on 570 articles related to franchising, from 108 journals published by 785 authors, taken from the Web of Science database. This article complements our understanding of the intellectual foundations of franchising research by highlighting the impact of authors, articles, journals and topics of interest. Given that franchising research cut across many functional areas and disciplines, the analysis provides insights for established and novice researchers, educational institutions and policymakers in understanding the evolution of this field.

Objective: To nominate Australian psychiatrists no longer living who made a distinct international contribution and impact. Method: Personal choices were made in nominating five psychiatrists and with supportive arguments provided in reviewing their contributions. Results: The five nominated psychiatrists were John Cade, Aubrey Lewis, Leslie Kiloh, Bernard Carroll and Issy Pilowsky. Conclusion: Background information allows the contributions of the five nominees to be both considered and celebrated.

This article presents results from a survey of faculty in North American Library and Information Studies (LIS) schools about their attitudes towards and experience with open-access publishing. As a follow-up to a similar survey conducted in 2013, the article also outlines the differences in beliefs about and engagement with open access that have occurred between 2013 and 2018. Although faculty in LIS schools are proponents of free access to research, journal publication choices remain informed by traditional considerations such as prestige and impact factor. Engagement with open access has increased significantly, while perceptions of open access have remained relatively stable between 2013 and 2018. Nonetheless, those faculty who have published in an open-access journal or are more knowledgeable about open access tend to be more convinced about the quality of open-access publications and less apprehensive about open-access publishing than those who have no publishing experience with open-access journals or who are less knowledgeable about various open-access modalities. Willingness to comply with gold open-access mandates has increased significantly since 2013.

In 2013, the Prison Creative Arts Project at the University of Michigan and Teatro na Prisão at the Universidade Federal do Estado do Rio de Janeiro began an international exchange of university-based prison theater programs. The theater faculty at the Universidade do Estado de Santa Catarina joined the exchange in 2016 and began a new prison theater program at a women’s facility in Florianópolis, Brazil. Together, these three universities not only share best practices and resources but form a community of support and understanding as they engage in a highly specialized and challenging creative process inside prisons.

Background: Abstract presentation at scientific meetings grants attendees early access to innovation within the field, and ultimate journal publication serves as marker of research quality. This study aims to assess the publication conversion rate of abstracts presented at the American Association for Hand Surgery (AAHS) annual conference over 5 years and examine variables related to publication. Methods: Abstract information for oral and poster presentations from the 2012 to 2016 AAHS annual meetings was obtained through the AAHS website. A comprehensive literature search was conducted for journal publications correlating with abstracts based on titles, authors, and key words. Variables analyzed included study type, time to publication, and journal of publication. Results: In all, 1135 abstracts were reviewed from the 5-year period, consisting of 535 oral presentations and 600 posters. Overall, 532 articles (47%) were published. The publication conversion rate was 49% for oral presentations and 45% for posters. Mean time to publication was 11 months, with most publications occurring within 2 years (87%). The most common journals for publication were Journal of Hand Surgery (30%), HAND (21%), and Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (7%). Conclusions: About half of the studies presented at the annual AAHS meeting become published, with similar rates between oral and poster formats. Most of the successful abstracts achieved publication within 2 years from presentation, demonstrating the need for timely completion of manuscripts. The publication conversion rate increased in recent years, emphasizing the continued improvement of the scientific quality of presentations at the AAHS meeting.

Condition assessments have long been a tool for preservation professionals to develop collections care practices and establish treatment priorities. Although collections vary greatly among libraries, archives, and museums (LAMs), similarities exist in our approaches and recommendations for storage, handling, exhibit, and treatment prioritization. In addition, few institutions exist whose collection strictly contains a single format of material—almost all LAMs hold some variety of materials. To date, however, our approaches to assessment have been siloed into our respective areas, with tools available for each collecting area or object type. This article examines the history of condition assessments, reviews existing tools and efforts, and argues the value of building more unified efforts in condition assessment tools to better merge LAM vocabularies and preservation efforts. This article further serves as a call to action to develop cross-disciplinary applications to help professionals more effectively administer collections care and evaluate preservation priorities of mixed collections.

This article analyses the early Chilean State experience in the management of its flag-carrying airline, Línea Aérea Nacional. Drawing on Línea Aérea Nacional documents as well as newspapers, laws, and parliamentary debates, the article reconstructs the development of the company between 1929 and 1945. The central argument of this article is that, although Línea Aérea Nacional was created as an instrumental State-owned enterprise to ensure national sovereignty, the airline lived through three stages, each one of them dependent on the economic policy priorities of the different governments. The first stage started with Línea Aérea Nacional's initial activities; the second stage covers the period 1932–40 and was characterised by a financial and operational crisis. During the third stage (1941 onwards) a scheme of long-lasting State financing was granted. It allowed Línea Aérea Nacional to renew its fleet, expand – nationally and internationally – its routes, and improve its financial and operational outcomes.

Environment and Behavior is a leading international journal that publishes research examining the relationships between human behavior and the built and natural environments since 1969. Motivated by its half-century anniversary, the present article uses the Web of Science Core Collection database to provide a bibliometric overview of the leading trends that have occurred in the journal during the 1969-2018 period. The impact of the journal has increased over the years, Gary W. Evans is the author with most published papers, articles by Paul C. Stern and Thomas Dietz have made a notable scientific impact, the University of Michigan is the institution with the highest number of publications, and there is a growing trend in the number of women and international contributors to the journal. This bibliographic review provides strong evidence of the scientific impact of the journal, and the wider Environment-and-Behavior community should be proud of its story of success.

The award is made on the basis of case complexity, case-mix variety, quality of treatment provided and results obtained, and the quality and format of the three case reports submitted through to post-treatment records.

In the era of radical socio-economic-technological developments, the Library and Information Science sector in Greece is undergoing a series of changes in a dialectic relation with technological changes. Libraries in Greece have a long history, from the Academy of Plato and the Lyceum of Aristotle in the 5th century BC to the transition of the National Library of Greece at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre. This paper aims to provide an overview and record the milestones signifying the beginning of the changes happening in every aspect of the Greek LIS landscape. In addition, it aims to highlight the changes in the Greek library scene, extending from synergies and networks to new library buildings, as well as the role of LIS education and lifelong learning.

From 6 November 2018 until 10 February 2019, the National Széchényi Library organized an exhibition of surviving items from the Bibliotheca Corviniana under the title The Corvina Library and the Buda Workshop. The exhibition, as its title suggests, focused on a single scholarly issue, the book production workshop established at the royal court. It showed how the purposeful process of library building (including the commissioning of books from Italy) was directed from Buda and which methods were used for the systematic development of the library. The exhibition had a monographic character and can be regarded the first survey of the subject. Therefore, the intention was to present not only the results of the research involved but also the process of reasoning and reaching the conclusions presented in the narrative. As a result, at the time of the exhibition and during its preparation, information transfer was happening at both cognitive and emotional levels. The nature of this information transfer was determined by the role certain pieces of information played in the story, depending on whether these were of primary or secondary character, explicitly communicated and centrally positioned, or used as a ‘supporting act’, making peripheral statements, acting as an emotionally charged but figurative account. Information was communicated explicitly through the detailed texts (object labels and summaries) and audiovisual displays accessible on screens, which demonstrated the process of research that went into the exhibition. The accompanying publications transmitted the main message on three levels. The exhibition, displaying 62 renaissance luxury codices, showed the power of homogeneity in a special way. The cultural and artistic aspect of the exhibition was exceptionally intensive, which enriched the visitors’ reception of it, creating a sense of completeness.

This chapter focuses on the necessity of strategies for challenging heteronormativity in teacher education classrooms and K–12 classrooms. The chapter explores the silence about this topic that prevents teachers at all levels from engaging in open and effective discussion about how to organize schooling so that is supportive of students who are LGBTQ. It details specific strategies for combating discriminatory practices in school classrooms and teacher education programs and the emotions of teachers accompanying these; these strategies include the use of literature, film, music, and activities. The importance of addressing bullying as a systemic and structural issue rather than as a classroom-management or disciplinary concern is detailed.

Since the first Confucius Institute was set up by the Chinese government for the promotion of Chinese language and culture overseas in 2004, the development of Confucius Institutes has become exponentially increasing. Currently, there are 29 Confucius Institutes in the United Kingdom among over 500 Confucius Institutes abroad; meanwhile, the activities of the British Council in China also became popular as one of the central paradigms for educational communication between China and the United Kingdom. Although there have been several studies on Confucius Institutes and British Council, respectively, little research exists about them from the international comparative perspective, with regard to both of them being cultural institutes abroad and the establishment of Confucius Institutes benefitting from the United Kingdom’s experience in promoting its national languages and culture. This article aims to discover the general similarities and differences between Confucius Institutes and the British Council in three aspects: the organisation structures and culture diffusion models, the language teaching and learning resources and activities, and the cooperation that the two institutes have with the other organisations.

The University of Denver (DU) Libraries has been producing exhibitions for close to a decade and has recently increased its efforts to partner with classes, campus units and community organizations to integrate exhibit practices and resources into curricular and co-curricular opportunities. Student- and class-curated exhibitions feature prominently in the DU Libraries’ strategic plan, and the long-term partnerships between the Libraries and the DU Writing Program are central to the library’s agenda. Through an interdisciplinary lens of critical information literacy, archival theory, museology and Writing Studies, this article explores the 5-year collaboration and exhibition project between DU Special Collections and Archives and a faculty member of the DU Writing Program. The authors cover the background of the partnership, the evolution of the instructive and creative elements of the course, with a particular focus on the integration of archival research and exhibition practice, and examples of various iterations of the student-curated exhibits produced as part of the coursework. The article concludes with a discussion of the cross-disciplinary outcomes and challenges of initiating and managing a collaborative university writing and research course incorporating archives and exhibition in an academic library in the United States.

The author addresses key questions that librarians, archivists, curators and administrators face when producing physical exhibitions in special collections, rare book libraries and archives. The author’s direct experience is complemented by data gathered through a pilot study she conducted in 2017 and is placed in the context of professional literature. The questions discussed focus mostly on physical exhibitions. While the context of this article is North American, the questions are also relevant to institutions in other countries. This article is especially of interest to new professionals, as an introduction to exhibition work, as well as to experienced professionals who want to reflect on their practices in comparison to those of other institutions.

This study identified the influential factors for adoption of OSILS in university libraries in Bangladesh. The survey was carried out among 196 library professionals from 14 private and seven public university libraries by a structured questionnaire which was adapted cautiously as per local arrangements after conducting a pilot survey. Factors for adoption of OSILS were analyzed by multiple regressions where overall satisfaction was used as dependent variable, and 14 factors for adoption of OSILS were applied as the independent variables. The entire model of regression analysis was established to be significant and revealed that cost-effectiveness, open source code, supporting community, backup and restore systems, easy to integrate with other software, and freedom from licensing fee significantly influenced library professionals to adopt OSILS. Moreover, an effort has been made for the first time to evaluate significant factors for adoption of OSILS in university libraries of Bangladesh that will prompt future research on OSILS.

This paper uses citation analysis to measure the intellectual impact of Chinese library and information science on outside disciplines. It analyses 469 journals in disciplines outside the library and information science field containing citations to 20 Chinese library and information science journals from 1996 to 2015. It shows that Chinese library and information science mainly receives citations from related disciplines, such as business and management, communication, and computer science, and that the majority of library and information science articles are rarely cited. The library and information science subjects of bibliometrics, information technology and knowledge management are most likely to be cited.

The study explores the experiences of librarians in three state universities in Zimbabwe with the consortium model of subscribing to electronic journals. The study employed a qualitative approach. Interviews were held with nine professional librarians from each of the participating institutions. Findings showed that state universities in Zimbabwe have benefitted from consortium subscribed electronic journals; however, librarians were concerned about their coverage and relevancy. Librarians felt disempowered as they have lost the independence to select resources suitable for their own institutions. The lack of archival rights is detrimental to post-termination access to previously subscribed resources. Institutions face challenges with technological infrastructure that allows them to convey consortium resources to their users. The study provides important insight into the practice of consortium from a developing country context. The findings will alert consortia managers and member institutions to the key shortfalls of consortia arrangements. The study’s recommendations hopefully triggers corrective actions aimed at improving the practice of consortia to the benefit of end users.

Can word patterns from grant abstracts predict National Science Foundation (NSF) funding? In an analysis of over 7.4 million words covering 19,569 proposals, this article presents evidence that the writing style of NSF grant abstracts corresponds to the amount of money received for the award. The data describe a clear relationship between word patterns and funding magnitude: Grant abstracts that are longer than the average abstract, contain fewer common words, and are written with more verbal certainty receive more money from the NSF (approximately $372 per one-word increase). While such language patterns correspond to award amount, they largely contradict the NSF’s call to communicate science in a plain manner, suggesting an inconsistency between the injunctive norms of the NSF and the descriptive norms of science writing. Broadly, the results support a tradition of research that uses big text data to evaluate social and psychological dynamics.

In 2015, the National Library Board (NLB) Singapore was invited to participate in a project to set up two public libraries of about 1500 sq m each, within a larger public library of 67,000 sq m in the Tianjin Eco City. This was the first time NLB had the opportunity to plan two libraries concurrently within a larger library, from conceptualisation to delivering the final product of two working libraries. The libraries were completed and opened in September 2018. This article describes the journey, opportunities, challenges and lessons learnt.

Yang Chengzong was a famous radiochemist and is considered the founding father of radio-chemistry in China. He was also a pioneer in the field of natural uranium technology and was one of the founders of the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC). Professor Yang planned and participated in the establishment of the university and its relocation to Hefei, Anhui Province, making indispensable contributions to the development of USTC. This article describes his more than 30 years of experience in scientific and educational endeavours at USTC and explores the important roles he played in the development of the university.

Bei Shizhang is known as a biologist in China. After returning from study abroad, he overrode all objections, established the Institute of Biophysics at the Chinese Academy of Sciences in July 1958 and strongly advocated for the establishment of the Department of Biophysics at the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) in September 1958. He planned and prepared for the establishment of the department from the very beginning. In determining various operational aspects, such as enrolment planning, teacher arrangements, teaching plans and teaching objectives, he endeavoured to change the traditional model of biology education by focusing on the basic knowledge of physics and chemistry and emphasizing the concept that education was in the service of the political and military needs of the country. With these principles, he trained a large number of outstanding talents in the field of biophysics. Using material from the USTC archives and from recorded interviews, this paper describes the process of establishing the Department of Biophysics at USTC and the important role played by Bei Shizhang.
