Raman spectroscopy and micro-Raman mapping have been used to study the distribution of different chemical components at the surface of coated papers. The paper coatings contain organic nanoparticles with a structure of poly(styrene- co-maleimide) and encapsulated vegetable oils. Raman spectroscopy is able to differentiate between various types of oil, i.e., polyunsaturated, monounsaturated, or saturated, and indicates that the degree of imidization and reactivity of the oil (amount of free oil) complement each other. The surface mapping over large areas (5 × 5 mm 2 ) illustrates good homogeneity of the coating layer and even surface coverage. The imide and oil are homogeneously distributed within the coating itself without a tendency for agglomeration. The covered areas of imide and oil mostly overlap for polyunsaturated oils, while larger amounts of oil occur outside the imide zones for monounsaturated and saturated oils. The latter indicates that the oil is partly "free" within the coating and acts as a continuous binder phase. The surface mapping over smaller areas (1 × 1 mm 2 ) shows the coating and cellulose covered areas are complementary. The surface maps confirm that interaction between the coating and paper substrate happens through hydrogen bonding. Heterogeneities in the coating are due to the presence of remaining ammonolyzed maleic anhydride precursors forming amic acid moieties. The organic phase, oil phase, and cellulose substrate can also be differentiated by principal component analysis of the surface maps.

Digital informed consent may better inform individuals about health research and increase participation. In the United States and elsewhere, minorities and rural populations are underrepresented in health research and may benefit from well-designed electronic informed consent (eIC). Seven focus groups were conducted with 50 Caucasian, African American, and rural patients in the United States. Participants were asked their preferences for a paper versus electronic informed consent document. Participants found the e-version easier to use, more interesting, and better for understanding. Minority participants emphasized limited access, computer literacy, and trust barriers to eIC. Rural participants were concerned about accessibility, connectivity, privacy, and confidentiality. People see value in electronic consenting. Researchers should consider barriers to eIC among underrepresented populations before recruitment.

Giving paper and polymer photochromic properties under laser irradiation is challenging due to the low resistance of these materials to heat, their flexibility, and their possibly irregular structure. However, we could successfully deposit TiO 2 /Ag/TiO 2 layers stacking on flexible white glossy paper and transparent polyethylene terephalate (PET) substrates using a reactive magnetron sputtering technique, and tailor coloration changes after laser irradiation, alternating visible and ultraviolet (UV) wavelengths. The sample colors are characterized by a panel of chromas depending on the irradiation conditions. We demonstrate that these chroma changes are due to morphological changes of Ag nanoparticles (NPs) after visible laser irradiation of the colored as-deposited sample. The process exhibits a good reversibility after subsequent UV irradiation due to the growth of new metallic Ag NPs. The colors displayed in diffuse reflection by the paper samples are more saturated than the ones displayed in regular transmission by PET samples. We demonstrate the efficiency of the photochromic process on such support by printing high resolution patterns exhibiting different colors depending on the observation conditions.

The open-source release of self-replicating rapid prototypers (RepRaps) has created a rich opportunity for low-cost distributed digital fabrication of complex 3-D objects such as scientific equipment. For example, 3-D printable reactionware devices offer the opportunity to combine open hardware microfluidic handling with lab-on-a-chip reactionware to radically reduce costs and increase the number and complexity of microfluidic applications. To further drive down the cost while improving the performance of lab-on-a-chip paper-based microfluidic prototyping, this study reports on the development of a RepRap upgrade capable of converting a Prusa Mendel RepRap into a wax 3-D printer for paper-based microfluidic applications. An open-source hardware approach is used to demonstrate a 3-D printable upgrade for the 3-D printer, which combines a heated syringe pump with the RepRap/Arduino 3-D control. The bill of materials, designs, basic assembly, and use instructions are provided, along with a completely free and open-source software tool chain. The open-source hardware device described here accelerates the potential of the nascent field of electrochemical detection combined with paper-based microfluidics by dropping the marginal cost of prototyping to nearly zero while accelerating the turnover between paper-based microfluidic designs., (© 2016 Society for Laboratory Automation and Screening.)

Paper-based systems have been widely investigated for developing point-of-care devices because of their simplicity, affordability, and ease of use. Recent advances have resulted in paper systems that have progressed beyond the historical "single-strip" format and allow for a larger range of functions. This review provides a summary of the advances that have been made to improve the utility of paper-based diagnostic tests for biosensing. Specifically, techniques for designing paper devices, including different geometries and chemical patterning to control fluid flow, are discussed. This review also examines novel approaches to improve paper-based assay sensitivities, such as sample preconcentration, signal amplification at the detection zone, and electrochemical methods., (© 2015 Society for Laboratory Automation and Screening.)

Paper-based electrochemical biosensors are a promising technology that enables rapid, quantitative measurements on an inexpensive platform. However, the control of liquids in paper networks is generally limited to a single sample delivery step. Here, we propose a simple method to automate the loading and delivery of liquid samples to sensing electrodes on paper networks by stacking multiple layers of paper. Using these stacked paper devices (SPDs), we demonstrate a unique strategy to fully immerse planar electrodes by aqueous liquids via capillary flow. Amperometric measurements of xanthine oxidase revealed that electrochemical sensors on four-layer SPDs generated detection signals up to 75% higher compared with those on single-layer paper devices. Furthermore, measurements could be performed with minimal user involvement and completed within 30 min. Due to its simplicity, enhanced automation, and capability for quantitative measurements, stacked paper electrochemical biosensors can be useful tools for point-of-care testing in resource-limited settings., (© 2015 Society for Laboratory Automation and Screening.)

Diffuse reflectance ultraviolet-visible-near-infrared (UV-Vis-NIR) spectroscopy is applied as a means of differentiating various types of writing, office, and photocopy papers (collected from stationery shops in India) on the basis of reflectance and absorbance spectra that otherwise seem to be almost alike in different illumination conditions. In order to minimize bias, spectra from both sides of paper were obtained. In addition, three spectra from three different locations (from one side) were recorded covering the upper, middle, and bottom portions of the paper sample, and the mean average reflectivity of both the sides was calculated. A significant difference was observed in mean average reflectivity of Side A and Side B of the paper using Student's pair >t-test. Three different approaches were used for discrimination: (1) qualitative features of the whole set of samples, (2) principal component analysis, and (3) a combination of both approaches. On the basis of the first approach, i.e., qualitative features, 96.49% discriminating power (DP) was observed, which shows highly significant results with the UV-Vis-NIR technique. In the second approach the discriminating power is further enhanced by incorporating the principal component analysis (PCA) statistical method, where this method describes each UV-Vis spectrum in a group through numerical loading values connected to the first few principal components. All components described 100% variance of the samples, but only the first three PCs are good enough to explain the variance (PC1 = 51.64%, PC2 = 47.52%, and PC3 = 0.54%) of the samples; i.e., the first three PCs described 99.70% of the data, whereas in the third approach, the four samples, C, G, K, and N, out of a total 19 samples, which were not differentiated using qualitative features (approach no. 1), were therefore subjected to PCA. The first two PCs described 99.37% of the spectral features. The discrimination was achieved by using a loading plot between PC1 and PC2. It is therefore concluded that maximum discrimination of writing, office, and photocopy paper could be achieved on the basis of the second approach. Hence, the present inexpensive analytical method can be appropriate for application to routine questioned document examination work in forensic laboratories because it provides nondestructive, quantitative, reliable, and repeatable results.

A pilot study assessed an electronic informed consent model within a randomized controlled trial (RCT). Participants who were recruited for the parent RCT project were randomly selected and randomized to either an electronic consent group (n = 32) or a simplified paper-based consent group (n = 30). Results from the electronic consent group reported significantly higher understanding of the purpose of the study, alternatives to participation, and who to contact if they had questions or concerns about the study. However, participants in the paper-based control group reported higher mean scores on some survey items. Background: Consumer nutrition environment measures are important to understanding the food environment, which affects individual dietary intake. A nutrition environment measures survey for supermarkets (NEMS-S) has been designed on paper for use in Guatemala. However, a paper survey is not an inconspicuous data collection method., Objective: To design, pilot test, and validate the Guatemala NEMS-S in the form of a mobile phone application (mobile app)., Methods: CommCare, a free and open-source software application, was used to design the NEMS-S for Guatemala in the form of a mobile app. Two raters tested the mobile app in a single Guatemalan supermarket. Both the interrater and the test-retest reliability of the mobile app were determined using percent agreement and Cohen's kappa score and compared with the interrater and test-retest reliability of the paper version., Results: Interrater reliability was very high between the paper survey and the mobile app (Cohen's kappa > 0.90). Test-retest reliability ranged from kappa 0.78 to 0.91. Between two certified NEMS-S raters, survey completion time using the mobile app was 5 minutes less than that with the paper form (35 vs. 40 minutes)., Conclusions: The NEMS-S mobile app provides for more rapid data collection, with equivalent reliability and validity to the NEMS-S paper version, with advantages over a paper-based survey of multiple language capability and concomitant data entry.

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) enables multiplex detection of analytes using simple, portable equipment consisting of a single excitation source and detector. Thus, in theory, SERS is ideally suited to replace fluorescence in assays that screen for numerous deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) targets, but in practice, SERS-based assays have suffered from complexity and elaborate processing steps. Here, we report an assay in which a simple inkjet-fabricated plasmonic paper device enables SERS-based detection of multiple DNA targets within a single polymerase chain reaction (PCR). In prior work, we demonstrated the principles of chromatographic separation and SERS-based detection on inkjet-fabricated plasmonic paper. The present work extends that capability for post-PCR gene sequence detection. In this design, hydrolysis DNA probes with 5' Raman labels are utilized; if the target is present, the probe is hydrolyzed during PCR, freeing the reporter. After applying the PCR sample to a paper SERS device, an on-device chromatographic separation and concentration is conducted to discriminate between hydrolyzed and intact probes. SERS is then used to detect the reporter released by the hydrolyzed probes. This simple separation and detection on paper eliminates the need for complex sample processing steps. In this work, we simultaneously detect the methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus genes mecA and femB to illustrate the concept. We envision that this approach could contribute to the development of multiplex DNA diagnostic tests enabling screening for several target sequences within a single reaction, which is necessary for cases in which sample volume and resources are limited.

A new Raman microscopy approach was developed to analyze the starch distribution of paper cross-sections in a faster and more specific way than is possible with the currently used iodine-staining method. Raman images were recorded and analyzed from cross-sections of cellulose hand sheets surface-sized with 1% or 2% starch solutions and with different film thicknesses. In addition, Raman imaging analysis of the starch distribution was performed on two industrial papers, an abrasive base paper and a surface-sized recycling paper. The visualization and the quantitative analysis of the starch distribution were performed by using the intensity changes of the Raman starch band at 855 cm(-1) and by principal component analysis. Distribution curves were calculated from the intensity data and compared for the samples with different starch concentrations and with results obtained from iodine-stained cross-sections of the same samples. The results of this study demonstrate the great potential and the new possibilities of Raman microscopy for studying the z-distribution of chemical components and additives in paper.

The purpose of this study was to assess whether a computerized battery of neuropsychological tests could produce similar results as the conventional forms. Comparisons on 77 volunteer undergraduates were carried out with two neuropsychological tests: Line Orientation Test and Enhanced Cued Recall Test. Firstly, students were assigned randomly across the test medium (paper-and-pencil versus computerized). Secondly, the groups were given the same test in the other medium after a 30-day interval between tests. Results showed that the Enhanced Cued Recall Test-Computer-based did not correlate with the Enhanced Cued Recall Test-Paper-and-pencil results. Line Orientation Test-Computer-based scores, on the other hand, did correlate significantly with the Line Orientation Test-Paper-and-pencil version. In both tests, scores were higher on paper-and-pencil tests compared to computer-based tests. Total score difference between modalities was statistically significant for both Enhanced Cued Recall Tests and for the Line Orientation Test. In both computer-based tests, it took less time for participants to complete the tests.

Background: A large number of nondigitized electrocardiograph (ECG) strips are routinely collected in larger cohort studies such as the ADDITION study (Anglo-Danish-Dutch Study of Intensive Treatment in People with Screen-Detected Diabetes in Primary Care). These ECG strips are routinely read manually but may contain overlooked information revealing cardiac autonomic dysfunction. The aim of this study was to investigate whether clinical information may be lost using manual R wave to R wave (RR) interval measurements in the calculation of heart rate variability (HRV) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM)., Method: From the Danish part of the ADDITION study, we randomly selected 120 T2DM patients at baseline of the ADDITION study. Analysis of the ECG strips was performed using two different methods: (1) by experienced technicians using rulers and (2) by experienced technicians using a high-resolution computer-assisted method. Calculation of heart rate and time domain HRV [standard deviation of normal-to-normal RR intervals (SDNN) and root mean square of successive differences (RMSSD)] were performed with the same software., Results: When comparing results from the two methods, the following values of Pearson's r are obtained: 0.98 for heart rate, 0.76 for SDNN, and 0.68 for RMSSD. These results indicate that heart rate and HRV measurements by the computer-assisted and manually based methods correlate. However, Bland-Altman plots and Pitman's test of difference in variance revealed poor agreements (p < .01) for both HRV measurements (SDNN and RMSSD); only heart rate showed substantiated agreement (p = .54) between the two methods. Low HRV was statistically significantly associated to high heart rate, systolic blood pressure, and diastolic blood pressure in these screen-detected T2DM patients., Conclusions: Paper ECG strips may contain overlooked clinical information on the status of autonomic function in patients with T2DM. In our study, manual measurements of RR intervals were inferior to the computer-assisted method. Based on this study, we recommend cautiousness in the clinical use and interpretation of HRV based on manual or low resolution measurements of RR intervals from ECG strips. High resolution measurements of RR intervals reveal significant associations between low HRV and high heart rate, systolic blood pressure, and diastolic blood pressure among patients with screen-detected T2DM. Environmental enrichment, besides having a great impact on animal welfare, can also be a potential variable in experimental research. Thus, we investigated whether enrichment of cages with paper tissues or plastic tunnels affects scientific outcome in the well-described mouse model of allergic asthma. BALB/cJ mice were introduced to paper tissues as nesting material, transparent plastic tunnels serving as shelters or kept in non-enriched cages. Afterwards, mice were sensitized to chicken egg ovalbumin (OVA) precipitated in aluminium sulphate and then intranasally challenged with OVA to induce allergic lung inflammation. Mice housed in cages enriched with paper tissues, but not with plastic tunnels, had increased total cell number, eosinophil number and IL-13 concentration in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid in comparison with the non-enriched control group. These results indicate that the effect of environmental enrichment on mice asthma models depends on the type of enrichment used. Therefore, it is important to consider the potential effects of any environmental enrichment on animal welfare and more importantly, on research results in order to standardize and obtain more accurate data from rodent studies.

Background: Paper printers have been used to document radiological findings in some hospitals. It is critical to establish whether paper printers can achieve the same efficacy and quality as dry laser printers for full-field digital mammography (FFDM)., Purpose: To compare the image quality and detection rate of dry laser printers and paper printers for FFDM., Material and Methods: Fifty-five cases (25 with single clustered microcalcifications and 30 controls) were selected by a radiologist not participating in the image review. All images were printed on film and paper by one experienced mammography technologist using the processing algorithm routinely used for our mammograms. Two radiologists evaluated hard copies from dry laser printers and paper printers for image quality and detectability of clustered microcalcifications. For the image quality comparisons, agreement between the reviewers was evaluated by means of kappa statistics. The significance of differences between both of the printers was determined using Wilcoxon's signed-rank test. The detection rate of two printing systems was evaluated using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis., Results: From 110 scores (55 patients, two readers) per printer system, the following quality results were achieved for dry laser printer images: 70 (63.6%) were rated as good and 40 (36.4%) as moderate. By contrast, for the paper printer images, 25 scores (22.7%) were rated as good and 85 (77.3%) as moderate. Therefore, the image quality of the dry laser printer was superior to that achieved by the paper printer (P=0.00). The average area-under-the-curve (Az) values for the dry laser printer and the paper printer were 0.991 and 0.805, respectively. The difference was 0.186. Results of ROC analysis showed significant difference in observer performance between the dry laser printer and paper printer (P=0.0015)., Conclusion: The performance of dry laser printers is superior to that of paper printers. Paper printers should not be used in FFDM.

Background: Developing countries are facing a rise in noncommunicable diseases (NCD), which is a cause for concern. The World Health Organization has recommended a stepwise approach for NCD risk factor surveillance. Screening for risk factors in remote populations is difficult due to lack of resources and technical expertise, including standardized laboratory facilities. The collection of samples on filter paper for the assessment of risk factors circumvents the need for blood processing, storage, and shipment at ultralow temperatures., Method: Samples were collected on 3-mm Whatman filter paper from one industry (National Thermal Power Corporation) located in the periphery of Delhi as part of a surveillance carried out in industries from different parts of India. Total cholesterol was measured in serum and dried blood by the cholesterol oxidase/p-aminophenazone method and triglycerides by the glycerophosphate oxidase-peroxidase/aminophenazone method. Values obtained by the two methods were compared using Pearson correlation, and Bland-Altman plots were prepared to assess bias., Results: The correlation coefficient "r" was 0.78 for cholesterol and 0.94 for triglycerides between dried blood spots and serum. Bland-Altman plots suggest that differences in values obtained by the two methods were within two standard deviations for most of the samples., Conclusions: Blood samples dried on filter paper can be a successful option for population screening in remote areas, provided preanalytical variations arising due to the method of blood spot preparation and storage are well controlled., ((c) 2010 Diabetes Technology Society.)

Background: One source of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) for genetic studies is the utilization of dried blood spots stored on paper cards (Guthrie cards) collected shortly after birth. These cards represent an important source of material for epidemiologic and population-based genetic studies. Extraction of DNA from these cards can lead to variable amounts of recovered DNA. We report here results of our efforts to maximize yield from this valuable, but nonrenewable, resource., Method: Commercial methods of DNA extraction from blood cards were used, and protocol modifications were introduced that enhanced DNA yield., Results: Use of a commercial solvent prior to DNA extraction steps gave greater yields than extraction without the solvent. Modification of the elution step by use of prewarmed extraction buffer and a soaking step at an elevated temperature increased yield by 6- to 10-fold., Conclusions: The modified DNA extraction method yielded as much as 660 ng of DNA from a single 5-mm-diameter punch of a blood spot card. Objectives: Clinical laboratories store filter paper samples used in neonatal screening for various periods of time after performing hormonal measurements. However, due to lack of data concerning specimen stability, it is unclear for how long these samples should be stored. The objective of this study is to determine the stability and reproducibility of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), thyroxine (T(4)) and 17-hydroxyprogesterone (17-OHP) measurements in filter paper blood samples stored for up to 60 months., Methods: Two hundred and twenty-eight blood samples, drawn between the second and the fourth day of life, were divided into seven distinct groups and kept at 4-8 degrees C for one day or 2, 12, 24, 36, 48 or 60 months after basal hormonal measurements. In each group, TSH, T(4) and 17-OHP levels were initially assayed 24-48 hours after collection (basal) and repeated once at the end of storage timing. All the measurements were performed by time-resolved fluorometry (1235 AutoDELFIA, Wallac Oy, Turku, Finland). Repeated and basal levels of each hormone were compared within the same group by Student's paired t-test. Differences were considered significant at P < 0.05., Results: Compared with basal measurements, TSH and T(4) levels declined significantly only when these hormones were re-assayed at 48 or 60 months of sample storage. In contrast, 17-OHP concentrations decreased earlier, starting at 24 months and continuing throughout the remaining period., Conclusion: Our data suggest that neonatal screening of filter paper samples kept at 4-8 degrees C are reliable for repeating the hormonal measurements when specimens are stored for up to one year, in the case of 17-OHP, or three years, in the case of T(4) and TSH.

Purpose: To describe a method of producing a life-sized three-dimensional (3D) solid model of a scaphoid bone by combining multidetector-row computed tomography (MDCT) volume data and rapid prototyping technique using thin paper as material, and to evaluate the dimensional accuracy of the experimental model., Material and Methods: We experimentally produced life-sized 3D solid models of 14 cadavers' scaphoid bones using high-resolution MDCT volume data, and evaluated the dimensional accuracy of the 3D solid models., Results: The 3D solid model was almost perfectly produced in both size and shape (length, height, width, dorsal cortical angle, and landmarks of the scaphoid bone) compared to the real cadaver's scaphoid bone. In addition to accuracy, the cost and time for creating the model might be reasonable., Conclusion: This technique may be useful in assisting repair of scaphoid bone fracture.

Many developing countries still rely on conventional hard copy images to transfer information among physicians. We have developed a low-cost alternative method of printing computerised tomography (CT) scan images where there is no dedicated camera. A digital camera is used to photograph images from the CT scan screen monitor. The images are then transferred to a PC via a USB port, before being printed on glossy paper using an inkjet printer. The method can be applied to other imaging modalities like ultrasound and MRI and appears worthy of emulation elsewhere in the developing world where resources and technical expertise are scarce.

Cage-cleaning is necessary for a hygienic environment, but since rats communicate using scent, they might suffer if their cages are cleaned too frequently. Male rats (Sprague-Dawley and Wistar) were kept for five months across four animal units. Their cages were cleaned twice-weekly, weekly, or every two weeks, and contained either aspen woodchips or absorbent paper bedding. Aggression, injuries and general health, weight gain, chromodacryorrhoea (a stress-related Harderian gland secretion), handleability, and lung pathology were monitored, as was in-cage ammonia. Cleaning frequency had no clear impact on rat welfare, although frequent cleaning decreased ammonia concentrations and handleability, and non-aggressive skirmishing was highest in weekly cleaned rats. Surprisingly, bedding type did not affect ammonia, but all ammonia readings were unexpectedly low. However, rats kept on aspen had greater sneezing rates and lung pathology than those on paper bedding, but also had higher body weights. The results raise concerns about aspen bedding, which is relatively inert compared with other wood beddings, but nevertheless more harmful than paper. Animal unit significantly affected eight of the 11 variables tested, having interactive effects on five of them. The study also demonstrates the interactive effects of different animal units, casting doubt on the feasibility of standardization. We explored multiple variables of interest, so all findings require confirmation through further work. Nevertheless, cage-cleaning rates seem to affect socially housed male rats little, while bedding type has important effects on rat health.

The work presented in this paper details the design and performance characteristics of a new hyperspectral visible imaging technique. Rather than using optical filters or a dispersing element, this design implements Fourier transform spectroscopy to achieve spectral discrimination. One potentially powerful application of this new technology is the non-destructive analysis and authentication of written and printed documents. Document samples were prepared using red, blue, and black inks. The samples were later altered using a different ink of the same color. While the alterations are undetectable to the naked eye, the alterations involving the blue and black inks were easily detected when the spectrally resolved images were viewed. Analysis of the sample using the red inks was unsuccessful. A 2004 series 20 US dollars bill was imaged to demonstrate the application to document authentication. The results argue that counterfeit detection and quality control during printing are plausible applications of Fourier transform hyperspectral visible imaging. All of the images were subjected to fuzzy c-means cluster analysis in an effort to objectively analyze and automate image analysis. Our results show that cluster analysis can distinguish image features that have remarkably similar visible transmission spectra.

Measurement of illicit drugs on paper currency is of interest for evidentiary purposes in legal cases involving the drug trade. Current methods, primarily based on mass spectrometry, are destructive and prevent re-analysis of the evidence. This article details a method based on Raman microspectroscopy that is able to collect spectra from individual crystals on the surface of paper currency. Mixtures of isoxsuprine and norephedrine, which are non-pharmacologically active drug surrogates, as well as lidocaine and benzocaine, common excipients in street drugs, were doped in small quantities onto US currency. Significant fluorescence interference resulted from the underlying dollar bill. This work presents two methods for reducing the fluorescence background, photobleaching and background subtraction, which both worked well. Finally, a method for determining the percent composition of individual components in heterogeneous mixtures was developed by systematically sampling the surface of the dollar bill. Results were accurate within a few percent, although the method was quite time consuming.

Reading from a visual display terminal (VDT) has increased enormously with widespread computer use. Whether such reading affects higher cognitive processes requires study so the effect of display medium (LCD screen vs paper) and luminance contrast (1:3, 1:7, 1:11) on concept-formation performance and EEG responses was investigated. 96 men and 24 women participated in two concept-formation tasks (rule learning vs attribute and rule learning). Concept-formation performance and EEG responses were similar for stimuli displayed on paper or LCD screen. The concern that the screen may be detrimental to conception-formation performance was not confirmed; however, luminance contrast significantly affected time to complete a concept-formation task and EEG response. The middle contrast (1:7) had the smallest mean EEG power, so this contrast might be appropriate for cognitive performance. Participants' performance was significantly faster and EEG power lower for the rule-learning task than for an attribute and rule-learning task.

Moisture absorbency is one of the most important characteristics of rodent beddings for controlling bacterial growth and ammonia production. However, bedding manufacturers rarely provide information on the absorbencies of available materials, and even when they do, absorption values are usually expressed per unit mass of bedding. Since beddings are usually placed into cages to reach a required depth rather than a particular mass, their volumetric absorbencies are far more relevant. This study therefore compared the saline absorbencies of sawdust, aspen woodchips, two virgin loose pulp beddings (Alpha-Dri and Omega-Dri), reclaimed wood pulp (Tek-Fresh), and corncob, calculated both by volume and by mass. Absorbency per unit volume correlated positively with bedding density, while absorbency per unit mass correlated negatively. Therefore, the relative absorbencies of the beddings were almost completely reversed depending on how absorbency was calculated. By volume, corncob was the most absorbent bedding, absorbing about twice as much saline as Tek-Fresh, the least absorbent bedding. Conversely, when calculated by mass, Tek-Fresh appeared to absorb almost three times as much saline as the corncob. Thus, in practical terms the most absorbent bedding here was corncob, followed by the loose pulp beddings; and this is generally supported by their relatively low ammonia production as seen in previous studies. Many factors other than absorbency determine whether a material is suitable as a rodent bedding, and they are briefly mentioned here. However, manufacturers should provide details of bedding absorbencies in terms of volume, in order to help predict the relative absorbencies of the beddings in practical situations.

This study examined whether survey response rate differed based on the color of the paper the survey was printed on (blue vs green) and presence of a monetary incentive. A 4-page survey on eating disorders was mailed to Division 1A and 1AA college head athletic trainers (N=223) with half of the surveys on blue paper and half on green paper. Half of the athletic trainers (n = 111) received a $1.00 monetary incentive, and half (n = 112) received no monetary incentive. A total of 166 (71%) athletic trainers returned completed surveys. Response rates did not differ based on survey color but did differ based on presence of a monetary incentive. Athletic trainers who received a monetary incentive were significantly more likely than those who did not to return completed surveys (86% vs 63%, respectively).

Understanding the changes that occur when dyes are absorbed onto paper is crucial for the design of new inkjet dyes. This problem is particularly difficult for black dyes that have complex chromophores, and as a result, spectroscopic information on electronic and structural changes can be of importance. Surface-enhanced resonance Raman scattering (SERRS) and electronic structure calculations were used to probe in situ changes in the chromophore in black di-azo dyes printed onto paper. The data indicate that the low-energy chromophore is due mainly to the hydrazone group and the high-energy chromophore to both the azo and hydrazone groups. A comparison of SERRS from the dyes adsorbed onto silver particles in suspension and from the dyes on paper demonstrated a broadening of the chromophore into the red for both dyes and evidence of a structural change in one dye.

In this study properties of a contaminant material on the surface of a probe window (prism) were investigated. The probe window, i.e., the prism, is part of the reflectometer apparatus exploited in this study. The contaminant layer was considered to originate from a pulping solution containing lignin contacting the surface of the prism. In these experiments the contact time was up to 5.0 hours. To find the values of the contaminant material properties, i.e., refractive index (n), extinction coefficient (k), and effective thickness (d), an optical model was proposed assuming that the contaminant layer is continuous and homogenous. In addition, the model includes an inter-diffusion layer existing between the contaminant layer and the lignin solution. From the fitting procedure using the optical model of depth profiling, it was found that the growth rate of the contaminant layer was approximately 60 nm per hour. The results obtained by theory and experiments were consistent for both s- and p-polarizations and for the various wavelengths of the light source (300, 400, and 500 nm).

Objective: Symptoms of hypothyroidism in adults can be mistaken for medical and psychiatric diseases, as well as for general signs of ageing such as weakness, lethargy and fatigue. The incidence of hypothyroidism is many-fold higher in adults than in newborn children. The latter have been routinely screened for the condition using filter paper dried blood spots (DBS) for nearly three decades but this cost-effective screening technique has only recently been applied to adults. This study was undertaken to show that DBS testing in adults and older children is an accurate way to screen for hypothyroidism., Methods: Serum and DBS specimens were collected from adults and children. Assays were run on both specimens and the results correlated. In addition 972 specimens were collected from adults at community centres and nursing homes. Follow-up studies were performed on patients with positive results., Results: The correlation coefficient for 118 matched serum and DBS specimens was 0.99. Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) values were elevated in 50 of the 972 adults from nursing homes and community centres. Thirteen of these individuals were on thyroid medication and 28 had either high serum TSH or high thyroglobulin (TgAb) or thyroid peroxidase (TPOAb) antibody levels., Conclusions: Individuals can be screened for hypothyroidism by collecting finger stick DBS specimens at community centres, nursing homes and other locations which can be mailed by regular postal service to a central laboratory for accurate and inexpensive testing.

Objectives: Phenylketonuria (PKU) is a genetic disease with autosomal recessive inheritance. In Poland the microbiological Guthrie test for this disease was replaced by an enzymatic colorimetric test. The question is whether the colorimetric test might be used in monitoring treatment of PKU., Setting: In 80 patients with PKU on routine treatment monitoring of serum phenylalanine concentrations (SPh) was compared with phenylalanine concentrations in blood on filter paper (PhBFP)., Methods: Measurements of SPh were by a fluorimetric method (McCaman and Robins), and those of PhBFP were by an enzymatic colorimetric method., Results: The regression analysis of SPh compared with PhBFP gave the equation y=0.9219x+0.2389; for the reversed ratio: it gave y=1.0220x+0.55083. The correlation was 0.97 at p<0.05., Discussion: Concentrations of SPh accepted for children with PKU are not uniform. In the Cracow centre, the range of accepted SPh concentrations are 2-6 mg/dl for children and <12 mg/dl for older patients. The concentrations of PhBFP accepted are somewhat higher than SPh, range from 4 to 10 mg/dl, and are a good indicator of an appropriate diet., Conclusions: (1) The comparison indicated that colorimetric measurements of PhBFP are effective in monitoring therapeutic PKU management. Tests can be performed more often and are more comfortable both for the patients and their parents. (2) The comparative results indicated a concentration of PhBFP ranging from 4 to 10 mg/dl to be the accepted value for children treated for PKU.

Two different materials-aspen wood-wool and paper towel-were compared as nesting material for three inbred mouse strains (BALB/c, C57BL/6J and DBA/2) housed in barrier conditions. In addition, the effect of varying the number of females per cage (one to three per cage) of these three strains and with NIH/S outbred mouse stock was studied. The number of litters, litter size and neonatal mortality were determined, as well as age, sex and weight of weanlings. The type of nesting material did not affect the characteristics monitored. In all strains, the number of weanlings per female was greatest in singly-housed females. In terms of the number of weanlings per cage, two females per cage gave the best result. In DBA/2 mice, neonatal mortality increased when several females were caged together.

Binary mixtures of aspartame prepared at three levels of concentration and dissolved in four ethanolic dilutions were perceptually evaluated. Sweet-pungent combinations were presented in solution or in disks of filter paper (paper) soaked in the solutions. Variations in sweetness and pungency were examined at two oral loci including the tip and the back plus the front of the tongue in the liquid condition or the tip and the back of the tongue in the paper condition. A similar behavior was observed in liquid and paper conditions; as the concentration of aspartame and ethanol increased so did the intensity for sweet and pungent qualities. Whereas sweetness was not influenced by ethanol addition (2-8% V/V), a suppressive effect of aspartame (1-4 mM) on pungency was noted for liquid but not for the paper condition. Sweetness was enhanced when the back plus the front of the tongue was stimulated by solutions. Finally, there was a complex pattern of regional effects on the perceived pungency of alcoholic-sweet solutions that was not replicated in the paper condition.

Previous work has shown that laboratory rats preferred to use nest-boxes and nesting materials rather than empty parts of the cage. In preference tests, they chose opaque or semi-opaque nest-boxes and long strips of soft paper nesting material. Choice tests to demonstrate a preference between nest-boxes and nesting material were not possible because nesting materials were carried into the nest-boxes. Furthermore, preference tests did not show how important these items were to the animals. Accordingly, operant tests were conducted, in which the rats had to lift a weighted door in order to gain access to an empty cage, or one containing a nest-box, nesting material or both items. By progressively increasing the weight of the door in subsequent trials, it was shown that the rats would carry out more work to reach a nest-box, with or without nesting material, than to reach an empty cage.

Nest-boxes and nesting materials were considered potentially useful items with which to enhance the environment of rats housed in standard laboratory cages. This study was carried out to determine whether such items are actually used by rats, and if so, what features are important in their design. Laboratory rats were allowed to choose between four commercially available nest-boxes. Nest-boxes were preferred to other parts of the cage but the nest-box most frequently selected was not suitable for routine laboratory use. Accordingly a new nest-box was designed, incorporating features apparently attractive to the animals. This was a simple structure of opaque perspex, consisting of a roof and three walls. Similarly, rats were exposed to six commercially available nesting materials and those consisting of long paper strips were most preferred.

Behavioural and psychological needs of laboratory animals generally cannot adequately be met in standard laboratory cages. Environmental enrichment, which provides a more structured environment can enhance the well-being of laboratory animals. They may perform more of their species-specific behaviour and may control their environment in a better way. An easily applicable form of enrichment for laboratory mice is nesting material. Six different types of nesting materials were evaluated in a preference test with male and female animals of two strains [C57BL/6J or BALB/c, n = 48]. No significant differences in preference were found between the strains or between the sexes. All mice showed a clear preference for cages with tissues or towels as compared to paper strips or no nesting material, and for cages with cotton string or wood-wool as compared to wood shavings or no nesting material. Paper-derived materials were preferred over wood-derived materials, although the results also suggest that the nature (paper or wood) of the nesting material is less important than its structure, which determines the nestability of the material. Nesting material may be a relatively simple method to contribute to the well-being of laboratory mice.

Previous methods for assessing the control of diabetes at home have concentrated on the measurement of glucose concentrations in urine and, more recently, blood. These levels reflect only one aspect of deranged metabolism in the disease. A technique is described whereby glucose, lactate, and 3-hydroxybutyrate can be measured in capillary blood samples dried on boric acid impregnated filter paper. The technique is sufficiently sensitive to measure 0.05 mmol/l glucose, 0.02 mmol/l lactate, and 0.004 mmol/1 3-hydroxybutyrate with precisions of 4.0%, 4.5%, and 8.0%, respectively. This method could prove useful in the broader metabolic assessment of the diabetic state.

The analysis of urea in serum and whole blood samples dried onto filter paper has been investigated. In both cases the sample volume is not critical nor is the volume of sample applied to the filter paper if sample discs of consistent dimensions can be punched from the dried paper. The method must be calibrated by a serum-based material not an aqueous standard, presumably because of a matrix effect. A coefficient of variation of approximately 6% has been achieved over a wide range of urea concentration and the method has been shown to correlate well with a standard laboratory procedure. The technique has a particular application to neonatal capillary samples.

Screening for hypothyroidism has been achieved by seeking raised concentrations of thyroid stimulating hormone (h-TSH) in dried blood samples collected on absorbent paper from some 1700 newborn babies each week using double antibody radioimmunoassay and 125I-label counting on a NE1600 gamma counter linked to a HP9815S desk top calculator. Specificity, accuracy, and quality control of the assay have been investigated. The calculator programme stores all count, time, and calculated data and uses log-log function formation and third-power homoscedastic polynomial fit to the calibration data followed, if necessary, by elimination of outliers set at P = 0.5%. Branching in the calculation procedure provides the ability to process sample data in subgroups, completely to reprocess data (including presentation in a form suitable for making a histogram plot), and to reset without loss of data in case of instrument or main power failure. Variance analysis was used to select the minimum duration of count (50 s), and it was demonstrated that homoscedasticity pertains in the regression calculation.

A multicentre study for the detection of congenital hypothyroidism by enzyme-immunoassay of thyrotropin in filter paper blood spots is described. The method is accurate, with good precision and adequate sensitivity. No interference due to common blood constituents has been observed. Moreover, the TSH determination can easily be performed by photometric measurement of enzyme activity. Large series of samples can be processed by automation using common laboratory analysers. Values show good agreement with those obtained by RIA methods. We present a method for screening for congenital hypothyroidism which can be performed in all clinical laboratories.

A modified Schirmer test using thread instead of filter paper has been previously reported. The present report compares the characteristics of thread and filter paper and establishes the normal range for the tear flow rate. The moisture absorption by a 5-mm wide strip of filter paper was 0.765 microL/mm and that by a thread was 0.054 microL/mm. The thread was 14 times more sensitive in detecting small amounts of fluid than was the filter paper. The thread test was used in 42 normal subjects. The normal range was 60% to 140% (+/- 3 SD), so a value of less than 60% was considered to indicate lacrimal hypofunction, and over 140%, hyperfunction.

The radioimmunoassay described measures TSH in dried whole blood spots collected from neonates onto filter paper Guthrie cards. Microgranular cellulose is added to the precipitating reagent at the critical separation stage of the assay to overcome imprecision caused by the presence of the filter paper sample disc in the tube. The method was developed for a regional neonatal screening unit and has been found to be very reliable during ten months' routine use. It was required to be as precise, sensitive, accurate, rapid, simple, and inexpensive as possible and suitable for use with automatic diluting equipment in order to process large numbers of samples. Other methods were examined for their suitability and found not to fulfil one or more of the above criteria.

Osteocalcin was purified by gel chromatography from a crude extract obtained after decalcification of rat incisors. The apparent molecular weight, as determined by 5-15% SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, was 18,000, and amino acid analysis revealed 60 gamma-carboxyglutamic acid residues per 1000. Antisera against osteocalcin, raised in rabbits, reacted specifically with osteocalcin when investigated by immuno-electroblotting of dentin crude extract. 4-micron cryosections of formaldehyde-fixed tooth germs showed positive immunocytochemical staining for osteocalcin in dentin and odontoblasts. The staining of the mantle dentin at the coronal sides of the tooth germs was more intense than that of the adjacent circumpulpal dentin, while the odontoblasts involved in the formation of mantle dentin showed stronger immunoreactivity than did odontoblasts involved in circumpulpal dentin formation. This marked difference was not observed on the root sides of the tooth germs. In 1-micron cryosections, osteocalcin immunoreactivity was found evenly distributed throughout the entire cell body, with the exception of the Golgi region, which was less intensely stained, while the nucleus and the cell process were negative. The positive staining reaction with anti-osteocalcin antiserum was found in dentin from the very onset of its formation in the fetus. In conclusion, our results demonstrate the presence of osteocalcin in odontoblasts and dentin. Its immunocytochemical localization may be compatible with a distinct role in early dentinogenesis.

The use of an amylase-sensitive paper in a screening test for elevated serum amylase levels is described. The paper requires some modification before it can be used as a quantitative amylase assay, but even in its present form it will reliably identify samples with raised amylase levels. In tests with sera received routinely for amylase assay the paper characterised 80% of samples as Normal. Quantitative amylase assay confirmed the results, and thus, even with the present paper, if only the Medium or High sera were sent to the laboratory for full biochemical analysis there would be an 80% decrease in requests.

A simple and practical method of sampling capillary blood was tested. This method was used for determination of glycated haemoglobin by ion exchange chromatography. Capillary blood was collected onto filter paper and placed in a small polypropylene tube containing phosphate-buffered sodium chloride with EDTA and p-hydroxybenzoic acid methyl ester. There was good correlation between filter paper sampling and conventional sampling in tubes with EDTA as anticoagulant. With this new sampling technique the glycated haemoglobin value was stable for 7 days at room temperature and for at least 10 days at +4 degrees C. Sampling can be performed by the patient at home and the sample then mailed to the laboratory, thus enabling analysis to be performed prior to the patient's visit to the physician.

Collection of blood spots on filter paper offers a practical alternative for home monitoring of diabetic patients. We have compared the merits of three protein precipitants, trichloracetic acid (TCA), perchloric acid (PCA) and sulphosalicylic acid (SSA) for the elution of glucose from the filter paper, and their subsequent effects on three enzymic methods, glucose dehydrogenase (GDH), hexokinase (HK), and glucose oxidase (GOD) for the determination of glucose using a microcentrifugal analyser. The combination of TCA elutant with the GDH method was superior with respect to time course of reaction and elution time from the filter paper, and was chosen for routine use. Within- and between-batch precision for this method was 2.7% and 3.2% respectively at normal glucose concentrations. Recovery of glucose added to whole blood was 110 +/- 5%. Comparison with an automated glucose oxidase method for plasma glucose gave a slope of 1.1, intercept of -0.7 and a correlation coefficient of 0.9 (n = 64). We conclude that the combination of TCA and glucose dehydrogenase provides a robust, precise and accurate method for the quantitation of glucose in filter-paper blood spots. The procedure offers increased sensitivity and better precision than GOD methods. The use of TCA as elutant gives a faster elution time and has the least effect on any of the enzymic methods.

Mortality and hence the proportion of young weaned was markedly affected by the type of nesting material but not by maternal age or parity. With paper tissues for nesting purposes 476/791 (60%) young were lost compared with 216/1182 (18%) with woodwool. Similar results were obtained in 2 additional series. The proportion of young weaned was also affected by litter size; in general, pup mortality was heavier and took place earlier in the large litters (more than 9 young).
