John Jones Pugh (2/29/1864-8/9/1946) was born in Columbus, Ohio, the son of Richard and Elizabeth Pugh, natives of Wales who emigrated to America in 1854. John was appointed assistant librarian for the Columbus Public Library on October 6, 1881, and continued working for the library for an unprecedented sixty-five years until his death on August 9, 1946. He served as director or head librarian from 1896-1946. Pugh secured funds from Andrew Carnegie to build Columbus' Main Library on Grant Avenue. Pugh organized libraries for the soldiers during WWI.

Lee Milton Boda (3/27/1859-12/17/1937), a successful theater manager for many years, opened both the Southern Theatre (1896) and the Hartman Theatre (1911). He married Anna Harris in 1879. Jessie Glenada Hartsough, Lee's second wife, composed "Beautiful Star" in 1938. The Boda family operated the Hartman Theatre until 1963.

John H. Mohler (1/31/1861-10/27/1912) and his partners took over Halm, Bellows and Butler, a dry goods store founded in 1890, and renamed it McAlllister Mohler Company. It became Morehouse Fashion in 9/24/1951 and the Fashion from 1963-1968. His wife was Lillian R Chappelear whom he married in 1885.

Perin B. Monypeny (11/18/1878-6/20/1953) was an executive with the wholesale grocer Monypeny Hammond Company and served as an aide-de-camp on Ohio Governor Judson Harmon’s staff starting in 1909. His wife was Margaret Hickok.

Charles E. Firestone (12/28/1876-7/5/1949) was the son of Clinton Dewitt and Flora (Taft) Firestone. In 1911, he was secretary of the Columbus Buggy Company. At the time of his death, he was associated with the Ohio Inspection Bureau. Charles was married to Kathleen Longstreth.

John Green Deshler (12/9/1852-7/7/1929) was born on Broad Street in Columbus, Ohio, the son of William G. Deshler and his second wife, Ann Eliza Sinks. John was one of the organizers of the Deshler National Bank and president at the time of its consolidation in 1910 with the Hayden-Clinton Bank. He was also trustee of the Deshler estate that was responsible for building the Deshler Hotel on the site of the original Deshler family homestead at the corner of Broad and High Streets. John was also connected with the Buckeye Steel Castings Company and was president of the Central Ohio Natural Gas & Fuel Company. He married Minnie Greene and they were the parents of two daughters.

Max Morehouse (10/15/1865-2/4/1923) founded Morehouse and Starr in 1889 and Morehouse and Beese in 1893. He came to Columbus from Elyria in 1899 and co-founded Bowlands, Morehouse and Martens, which became Morehouse Martens Fashion on 12/26/1950. It was finally known as The Fashion, 1963-4/1968. His wife was Imogene Hull.

Harry J. Westerman (8/8/1876-6/27/1945) began his career with the Ohio State Journal in 1897 and was a cartoonist from 1901 to 1935. His first wife was Maude Kemmerle, and his second was Grace Doyle.

Frank H. Schille (8/21/1868-9/29/1933), manager of the Peter Schille Soda Water Company. His wife was Annabelle Hegner.

Edward W. Stribling (11/19/1881-7/26/1965) began as a merchant of horse and turf goods in 1903 then sold insurance until 1947. He married Alice Elliott in 1908.

John Henry Vercoe (8/23/1855-5/21/1918) was an attorney from 1881. He married Mary Louise Price in 1880.

This is a drawing Harry Preston Wolfe (4/26/1872-1/10/1946), born to Andrew Jackson and Nancy (Barton) Wolfe. Harry founded Wolfe Brothers Shoe Company with his brother, Robert F. Wolfe. With his brother, Harry bought the Ohio State Journal in 1903 and then the Columbus Dispatch in 1905. In 1929 Harry organized BancOhio, which was Ohio's first bank holding company and remained one of Columbus' largest and most successful banking organization until the 1970s. On December 23, 1895 Harry married Maud Hunter Fowler.

Frank W. Shannon (8/21/1847-8/27/1922) co-founded Shannon-Stewart Furniture Co in 1895 and by 1918 was president of his own firm, the Shannon Furniture Company. He married Ella Stewart in 1874.

James T. Sheppard (10/15/1870-11/19/1948) was secretary of the Nelson-Sheppard Company from 1907. His wife was Jane Benbow Sheppard.

This is a portrait of Robert Frederick Wolfe (11/10/1860-1/13/1927) was born on to Andrew Jackson and Nancy (Barton) Wolfe. He came to Columbus in 1888 and helped incorporate the H. C. Godman Shoe Co. In 1893 Robert and his brother, Harry P. founded Wolfe Brothers Shoe Company. In 1903 the brothers bought the Ohio State Journal and then in 1905 bought the Columbus Evening Dispatch newspapers. His first wife was Ada Thurston. Robert later married Della Mitchell. He died from a fall from the fifth floor window of the Columbus Dispatch building.

These are pictures of Gordon Battelle (8/10/1883-9/21/1923). The first is a portrait of him sitting and the second picture is a caricature of Gordon riding a horse. Gordon was born to John G. and Annie Norton Battelle. He inherited his father's interest in American Rolling Mill Company in 1918. Gordon was the president of International Derrick Co and International Steel Products and was also the director of Inland Steel Company and Eastern Hocking Coal Company. Because of an endowment of 1.5 million dollars from Gordon's estate, the Battelle Memorial Institute was founded on 1923.

A caricature of General John C. Speaks (2/11/1859-11/6/1945), the Ohio Chief Warden for the Fish and Game Commission, a position he was appointed to in 1907. He married Edna Lawyer in 1889. He later served five terms in the United States House of Representatives, from 1921-1931. He served in the Ohio National Guard for over 40 years, advancing from private to brigadier general. His brother was the musician and composer Oley Speaks. His wife was Edna Lawyer.
