Chemodynamic therapy (CDT), the ability to transform H2O2 into a highly toxic hydroxyl radical (˙OH) through a Fenton or Fenton like reaction to kill cancer cells, enables selective tumor therapy. However, the effect is seriously limited by the insufficiency of endogenous H2O2 in cancer cells. Additionally, the specific recognition of epitope imprinting plays an important role in targeting cancer cell markers. In this work, we prepared H2O2 self-supplying degradable epitope molecularly imprinted polymers (MIP) for effective CDT, employing fluorescent calcium peroxide (FCaO2) as an imaging probe and a source of H2O2, the exposed peptide in the CD47 extracellular region as the template, copper acrylate as one of the functional monomers and N,N‘-bisacrylylcystamine (BAC) as a cross-linker. MIP with recognition sites can specifically target CD47-positive cancer cells to achieve fluorescence imaging. Under the reduction of glutathione (GSH), the MIP were degraded and the exposed FCaO2 reacted with water to continuously produce H2O2 in the slightly acidic environment in cancer cells. The self-supplied H2O2 produced ˙OH through a Fenton like catalytic reaction mediated by copper ions in the MIP framework, inducing cancer cell apoptosis. Therefore, the MIP nano-platform, which was capable of specific recognition of the cancer cell marker, H2O2 self-supply and controlled treatment, was successfully used for targeted CDT.

It is difficult for drug delivery systems to release drugs as expected, often leading to undesired side effects. To solve this problem, a CuS@MSN/DOX@MnO2@membrane (CMDMm) was reasonably designed. It was introduced to release the drug by a double response, similar to using two keys to open two locks at the same time for one door. CuS@MSN was used as a photothermal therapy (PTT) material and carrier, and then the surface of CuS@MSN/DOX was sealed by MnO2 to prevent drug release in advance. MnO2 could be reduced and degraded in a tumor microenvironment. It was applied in MR imaging due to the T1 magnetism of Mn2+ following the reduction of MnO2. Finally, the 4T1 cell membrane was extracted and coated onto the surface of CuS@MSN/DOX@MnO2, which served as a target for 4T1 tumor cells. A noteworthy phenomenon was that the fluorescence of DOX was quenched by the coordination between DOX and CuS, and this greatly improved the interaction between DOX and CuS@MSN. However, the coordination was weakened when DOX was protonated in a tumor microenvironment (∼pH 5.0), leading to the release of DOX and fluorescence recovery. The drug release experiments showed that the release efficiency was higher at pH 5.0 with 10 mmol L-1 GSH. Through in vitro laser confocal imaging, it was successfully observed that DOX was reliably released in specific tumor cells according to the fluorescence recovery, and that there was no leakage in other cells. In short, effective double response drug release was successfully confirmed.

Band-gap engineering of molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) by introducing vacancies is of particular interest owing to the potential optoelectronic applications. In this work, systematic density functional theory (DFT) calculations were carried out for few-layered 3R-MoS2 with different concentrations of S vacancies. All results revealed that the defect energy levels introduced on both sides of the Fermi level formed an intermediate band in the band gap. Both the edges of the intrinsic and intermediate bands of the structures with the same type of vacancies were generally closer to the Fermi level, and the gaps decreased as the number of layers increased from 2 to 4. The preferentially formed S vacancies at the top layer and the transition of defect types from point to line led to similar indirect band gaps for 2- and 4-layered 3R-MoS2 with a low bulk concentration (around 5%) of S vacancies. This is different from most reported results about transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) materials that the indirect band gap decreases as the number of layers increases and the low concentrations of vacancies show negligible influence on the band gap value.

Herein, flexible triboelectric nanogenerators (FTENGs) composed of polydimethylsiloxane/3D bilayer graphene/carbon cloth (PDMS/3D BLGr/CC) were prepared via a facile strategy. Gold/polyethylene terephthalate (Au/PET) and the PDMS/3D BLGr/CC composites were employed as the top and bottom electrodes for the FTENGs. Such FTENGs demonstrated maximum values of the peak-to-peak output voltage (70 V), peak-to-peak current density (9.3 μA cm−2), and output power density (0.65 mW cm−2) which are significant when compared to those in the literature. The inherent flexibility was displayed by repeated bending tests at different angles (0–180°) for 1000 cycles, the results of which showed that the FTENG could retain 95.4% of its initial output performance. A working device was fabricated in which FTENGs with areas of 1 cm2 and 9 cm2 could instantaneously light up 28 and 94 green light-emitting diodes. This credibly proves that PDMS/3D BLGr/CC composites can be explored for use in next-generation flexible and wearable energy harvesting systems.

A high-performance flexible sodium-ion full battery (FSIFB) is developed by using binder-free composite film (BFCF) electrodes without using conductive carbon and current collectors. Hard carbon fibers decorated with different electrochemical active materials are used as the supporting framework and 3D conductive network of FSIFBs for the first time. Different pre-sodiated anodes and the electrolyte additives are designed for well-matched FSIFBs. Using a porous Na3V2(PO4)3 coated hard carbon fiber film with a mass loading of 2.34 mg cm−2 as the cathode and a pre-sodiated graphene/SiC/hard carbon fiber film with a mass loading of 1.50 mg cm−2 as the anode, an optimized FSIFB is designed. It delivers high output voltage (3.34 V), high energy density (234.1 W h kg−1 at a high-current rate of 0.5 A g−1), ultralong cyclability (over 2905 cycles at 0.5 A g−1 and 1000 cycles at 5 A g−1), and high coulombic efficiency (approaching 100%), which surpasses those of all FSIFBs reported so far. Furthermore, this FSIFB still maintains good electrochemical attributes even at serious bending states in water. The models of the solid electrolyte interphase behavior on the surface of electrodes in the FSIFB are studied by using EIS, and a reaction mechanism and an equivalent electrical circuit are proposed. We also provide the videos of the preparation process for a pouch-type FSIFB to demonstrate its simple operability and potential applications.

LiCrO2 and NaCrO2 have been well-studied as cathode materials in lithium and sodium ion batteries, while the studies on LiCrS2 and NaCrS2 are relatively rare. In this work, a comparative study on the electronic structures and redox reactions in oxides (LiCrO2, NaCrO2) and sulfides (LiCrS2, NaCrS2) is performed. A first-principles method has been used to calculate the Bader charge transfer, the electronic structures and the magnetic moments during the entire delithiation or desodiation process. The Bader charge analysis suggests that all the S, O and Cr ions in LiCrX2 and NaCrX2 participate in the redox reactions, where the loss of electrons of S ions is clearly larger than that of O ions. Besides, the redox processes of Cr ions are of much less significance. It is noted that, in the sulfides, Cr ions even gain a small portion of electrons rather than losing electrons during the extraction of Li/Na ions. All the charge transfer happens between the S-3p/O-2p and the Cr-3d bands. The redox reactions of O or S ions originate from the energy levels of O/S being pushed towards/across the Fermi surface due to the strong p–d hybridization.

Amphiphilic ionic liquids, 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (CnmimCl with n = 10, 12, 14, 16) were firstly used as modifiers to construct a self-assembly bilayer on the surface of iron oxide nanoparticles for generation of highly stable, water-based magnetic fluids. Subsequently, a magnet-driven mesoporous silica was synthesized by in situ self-assembly in the bilayer CnmimCl-stabilized magnetic fluid using the C16mimCl as template and tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) as silicon source via a hydrothermal synthesis and following calcination procedure. A systematic study was carried out addressing the influence of the alkyl chain length of CnmimCl in the primary and secondary layers on the stability of magnetic fluids. The characterization of TEM, XRD, VSM, electrophoresis experiments, TGA and DTA showed that stable water-based magnetic fluids can be synthesized based on the assembly of the well-defined bilayer-CnmimCl structure with long-chain C16mimCl as secondary layer on the magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles. The results of small and wide-angle XRD, TEM, VSM, and N2 absorption experiments indicated that the nano-scale magnetic Fe3O4 particles were inlayed into hexagonal p6mm mesoporous silica (MCM-41 type) framework. Importantly, it was found that the obtained Fe3O4/MCM-41 was an appropriate adsorbent for the adsorption of rhodamine B and methylene blue from their aqueous solution. In addition, the adsorbent could be separated and reclaimed fleetly from the solution under external magnetic field.

The first example of a bifunctional donor–donor 3C synthon in situ from activated methine (methyleneindolinone and methylenebenzofuranone) with nitromethane through a [2+1] Michael addition, which further directed the following organocascade Michael/Henry cycloaddition reaction in a one-pot operation is developed, serving as a fruitful strategy for facile access to optically active and structurally diverse hexahydroxanthones with up to six contiguous stereocenters, including a quaternary one. A series of diversely functionalized products are smoothly obtained with up to 76% yield, >20 : 1 d.r. and 98% ee from simple and readily available starting materials. In addition, this is the first example of 3-formyl chromone as an acceptor–acceptor 3C building block, and also the first asymmetric catalytic construction of six vicinal stereogenic centers on a hexahydroxanthone scaffold.

Recycling coated hardmetal scraps is becoming increasingly important for tungsten resource recovery. However, the coatings in these materials are one of the biggest problems, especially Al-containing coatings. In this study, discarded TiAlN-coated WC–Co hardmetal tool tips were isothermally oxidized at 900 °C in air, during which the final oxide, phase transition and microstructure evolution were investigated. Milled powders below 0.15 mm were completely oxidized in 180 min, and pieces of coatings were found in the final oxides. White WO3 was mainly distributed on defect-rich areas of oxide scale surfaces. Furthermore, the final oxide scale was triple-layered, mainly consisting of the WO3-concentrated outmost layer, the Al2O3-concentrated middle layer, and the TiO2-concentrated inner layer. It is different from the bi-layered Al2O3/TiO2 oxide scale that appeared for a new TiAlN-coated hardmetal during an oxidation resistance test. This was attributed to the defects in hardmetal scraps, which provided a fast pathway for element diffusion and volatilization of WO3. Consequently, it was impossible to remove Al2O3 completely.

In this work, a novel strategy is developed for the fabrication of phenylboronic acid functionalized iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) via distillation–precipitation polymerization and thiol–yne click chemistry. Firstly, silica was coated on the Fe3O4 MNPs using a sol–gel method to obtain Fe3O4@SiO2. Subsequently, the vinyl groups were grated onto the silica-modified Fe3O4 surface using 3-methacryloyloxypropyltrimethoxysilane. Next, alkynyl groups as the clickable sites were modified on the MNPs to obtain the product Fe3O4@pPMA via distillation–precipitation polymerization of the vinyl end groups with propargyl methacrylate, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate. Finally, phenylboronic acid was grafted on the surface of Fe3O4@pPMA via thiol–yne click chemistry. The morphology, structure, and composition of all the synthesized phenylboronic acid functionalized Fe3O4 MNPs (Fe3O4@pPMA-MPBA) were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Three glycoproteins ovalbumin, transferrin, and horseradish peroxidase and two non-glycoproteins lysozyme and horse heart cytochrome are the chosen target proteins and their adsorption performance on Fe3O4@pPMA-MPBA is investigated. The Fe3O4@pPMA-MPBA MNPs exhibited outstanding advantages towards glycoproteins including high adsorption capacity, excellent specificity, repeatability and good enrichment recovery. Furthermore, the Fe3O4@pPMA-MPBA MNPs could efficiently enrich glycoproteins from real egg white samples. This study provides a feasible strategy for the surface functionalization of boronate affinity nanomaterials for the selective isolation and enrichment of glycoproteins.
