Esterase/lipase-catalyzed selective hydrolysis of d, l-menthyl esters has become one of the promising approaches for producing l-menthol, one of the most important flavoring chemicals with extensive uses.

Blood tests are considered as standard clinical procedures to screen for markers of diseases and health conditions. However, the complex cellular background (>99.9% RBCs) and biomolecular composition often pose significant technical challenges for accurate blood analysis. An emerging approach for point-of-care blood diagnostics is utilizing "label-free" microfluidic technologies that rely on intrinsic cell properties for blood fractionation and disease detection without any antibody binding. A growing body of clinical evidence has also reported that cellular dysfunction and their biophysical phenotypes are complementary to standard hematoanalyzer analysis (complete blood count) and can provide a more comprehensive health profiling. In this review, we will summarize recent advances in microfluidic label-free separation of different blood cell components including circulating tumor cells, leukocytes, platelets and nanoscale extracellular vesicles. Label-free single cell analysis of intrinsic cell morphology, spectrochemical properties, dielectric parameters and biophysical characteristics as novel blood-based biomarkers will also be presented. Next, we will highlight research efforts that combine label-free microfluidics with machine learning approaches to enhance detection sensitivity and specificity in clinical studies, as well as innovative microfluidic solutions which are capable of fully integrated and label-free blood cell sorting and analysis. Lastly, we will envisage the current challenges and future outlook of label-free microfluidics platforms for high throughput multi-dimensional blood cell analysis to identify non-traditional circulating biomarkers for clinical diagnostics. 2-QY-Au NPs@metallohydrogel could catalyze and degrade a variety of organic dyes with an excellent catalytic activity and presented good biocompatibility and antibacterial activity.

A new hybrid hydrogel was constructed by in situ forming silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) within the 3D network of a hydrogel based on a tryptophan derivative containing a phenylcarbinol side group (HAIP), which was triggered by natural light, without the need of UV-irradiation or the addition of capping reagents. Remarkably, in addition to excellent thixotropy and injectability, the hybrid Ag NPs–HAIP hydrogel exhibits broad antibacterial activities without cell cytotoxicity, which makes it a potential candidate for various biomedical applications.

Microwave-assisted synthesis of polyheterocyclic-fused quinoline-2-thiones through the annulation of ortho-heteroaryl anilines and CS2 was realized in water without using any catalysts and additives. The desired products were obtained in high yields through simple filtration. A remarkable E-factor of 0.45 and an EcoScale score of 85.5 were obtained.

The X-ray crystal structure of F43Y/T67R myoglobin revealed unique Tyr-heme double cross-links between Tyr43 and the heme 4-vinyl group, which represents a novel post-translational modification of heme proteins. Moreover, with the feature of a distal His-Arg pair, the designed artificial enzyme exhibited a peroxidase activity comparable to that of native peroxidases, such as the most efficient horseradish peroxidase.

Two-dimensional MXene Ti3C2T x nanosheets with peroxide decoration (p-Ti3C2T x ) are synthesized by a sonication-assisted MILD etching method. The obtained MXenes can generate hydroxyl radical species and act as an initiator for free-radical polymerization of a series of acrylic monomers without the use of light illumination or co-initiators. The monomers analyzed include acrylamide, N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM), N,N-dimethylacrylamide, methyl methacrylate, and hydroxyethyl methacrylate. By simply mixing N-isopropylacrylamide monomers and p-Ti3C2T x nanosheets under deoxygenated conditions, PNIPAM-based nanocomposite hydrogels are synthesized using a high concentration of the monomer. The nanocomposite hydrogels have a photothermal conversion efficiency of 34.7% and photothermal stability superior to that of pristine Ti3C2T x . Taking advantage of the thermal responsive behavior of PNIPAM, the nanocomposite hydrogels are successfully exploited as remotely near-infrared light controlled "smart" windows, fluidic valves and photodetectors.

The first La3+-selective metallohydrogel was constructed by using a facile gelator of a phenylalanine derivative containing an imidazole group, N-(1H-imidazol-4-yl)methylidene-l-phenylalanine, namely La-ImF, which exhibits multi-stimuli responsive properties, including to heat, shearing, pH, etc. Various measurements were also carried out to obtain insights into the mechanism of gelation. Moreover, the La-ImF hydrogel can adsorb toxic dyes, making it a potential candidate for sewage treatment.

This paper introduces a new metallohydrogel precursor that offers a peculiar gelation response to Co2+ at pH 7–8. It is notable that the stability of this metallohydrogel is significantly dependent on its enantiomeric purity. In addition to the expected multi-stimuli responsive properties, including thixotropy, as well as re-assembly properties on adding HCl, this metallohydrogel possesses excellent self-healing behavior, which is uncommon in low-molecular-weight gelators. Electron microscopy (EM) studies revealed that the cryodried remains of this gel presented as well an organized three dimensional (3D) network of fibrils. This interesting metallohydrogel shows potential for developing new soft materials with drug delivery and catalysis properties.

A novel Pb2+-specific metallohydrogel HAIP–Pb was synthesized. HAIP–Pb possesses multi-stimuli responsiveness, including to pH, temperature, etc. Various measurements were performed to gain insights into the mechanism of gelation. The HAIP gelator can gel Pb2+ and simultaneously adsorb toxic dyes. Intriguingly, HAIP can cause gelation of soil containing Pb2+ ions.

This paper describes the fabrication and application of a complex electrode--Nafion film coating ferrocenylalkanethiol (FcC(11)SH) and encapsulated glucose oxidase (GOD) on a gold electrode. FcC(11)SH is employed as a mediator enabling the electron transfer between GOD and the electrode, GOD is encapsulated in polyacrylamide gel to improve the stability of the enzyme, and the Nafion film is coated on the modified electrode to eliminate interferents such as ascorbic acid, uric acid and acetaminophen in amperometric glucose detection. It is noticed that such a complex electrode exhibits excellent catalytic activity for glucose oxidation, and preserves the native structure of GOD and therefore its enzymatic activity. The encapsulated GOD retains more than 80% of its original biocatalytic activity even after 24 days, much longer than that of naked GOD molecules attached directly to the electrode. The oxidation peak current at the modified electrode shows a linear relationship with the glucose concentration in the range from 0.05 to 20 mM with a detection limit of 2.4 μM. In addition, the electrode displays a rapid response and good reproducibility for glucose detection, and has been successfully employed for glucose detection in blood plasma samples.
