Abstract

We carried out a systematic evaluation of the packing forces in co-crystals featuring monoiodo- and diiodo-perfluoroalkanes and 1,2,4-oxadiazoles through single crystal X-ray diffraction and theoretical analysis. The molecules assemble via a combination of halogen bonding and specific dispersive interactions involving the perfluorinated units. We quantitatively elucidated the nature and strength of such interactions through solid-state calculations and Hirshfeld surface analysis. One of the co-crystals, formed by two monoiodoperfluorodecane molecules, the longest perfluorinated chain ever solved at the atomic level, allowed us to fully highlight the role of fluorous interactions.

Abstract

Along the lines of a systematic investigation of conformational constraints promoted by weak interactions, the aryl-stacked structures of some chiral cyclic phosphonamides synthesised with the aid of Betti bases as chirality inducers were investigated by X-ray diffraction analysis and NMR spectroscopy. The synthesised systems showed the stacked conformation between two of their aryl groups, leading to pre-organized structures. The pi-pi stacking motif between the aromatic rings was observed in solid state and in solution, suggesting that this supramolecular synthon could be used as a conformational constraining tool in the development of drug molecule candidates based on chiral cyclic phosphonamides. The disabling of the pi-pi stacking motif was pursued by adding an ortho-substituent on one aromatic ring.

Abstract

Amyloid peptide hydrogels are a class of materials of great interest due to their structural simplicity, good performances and easy tuning of their properties by chemical modification. Among the possible modifications, halogenation has not yet been exploited extensively. Here, we report the single-crystal X-ray structure of two dihalogenated derivatives of the amyloidogenic sequence DFNKF. The obtained results show how halogenation is a promising tool to stabilize - through halogen bonds - the wet interface of amyloid structures, to determine an increase in the water uptake, hence the hydrogelation properties of the peptide sequence.

In crystals of a benzoselenazole dye, a network of hydrogen bonds with the dye cations locks two iodide anions at a distance allowing for an iodine molecule to be pinned at either ends via two halogen bonds. I42− supramolecular anions are formed as discrete species that lie in the confined space defined by cation molecules.

Abstract

Halogen bonding, a noncovalent interaction possessing several unique features compared to the more familiar hydrogen bonding, is emerging as a powerful tool in functional materials design. Herein, we unambiguously show that one of these characteristic features, namely high directionality, renders halogen bonding the interaction of choice when developing azobenzene-containing supramolecular polymers for light-induced surface patterning. The study is conducted by using an extensive library of azobenzene molecules that differ only in terms of the bond-donor unit. We introduce a new tetrafluorophenol-containing azobenzene photoswitch capable of forming strong hydrogen bonds, and show that an iodoethynyl-containing azobenzene comes out on top of the supramolecular hierarchy to provide unprecedented photoinduced surface patterning efficiency. Specifically, the iodoethynyl motif seems highly promising in future development of polymeric optical and photoactive materials driven by halogen bonding. publishedVersion

Abstract

New, halogen-bonded mesogens are formed as trimeric complexes of two molecules of alkoxystilbazole and one of 1,4-diiodotetrafluorobenzene. The pure complexes show only monotropic nematic phases, while mixtures show a enantiotropic nematic with a range of up to 11 °C. A possible correlation between nematic phase stability and halogen bond strength is suggested.

Abstract

1,6-Bis(trimethylammonium)hexane bis(trihalides) and mixed bis(trihalides) have been synthesized by treating the corresponding dihydrated halides with molecular dihalogens under gas–solid and solution conditions. Despite the starting halides being non-porous, the trihalide syntheses occur homogeneously, in quantitative yields, and reversibly. In all cases halogen bond prevails over hydrogen bond, dihalogens substitute for the hydration water of starting halide anions and trihalides are formed. The stability of the obtained trihalides is mainly due to cooperative halogen bond and cation templation effect. Hexamethonium halides are proven effective solids for the clathration and storage of molecular dihalogens. While the starting salts are not isostructural, all the formed trihalides and mixed trihalides are isostructural.

Abstract

This critical review describes how halocarbons can function as effective binding sites of anions via halogen bonding, the noncovalent interaction whereby halogen atoms accept electron density. The focus is on the binding and coordination of oxyanions, by far the most numerous class of anions in organic chemistry. It is shown how a large variety of inorganic and organic oxyanions can form discrete adducts and 1D, 2D, or 3D supramolecular networks with chloro-, bromo-, and iodocarbons. Specific examples are discussed in order to identify new supramolecular synthons based on halogen bonding and to outline some general principles for the design of effective and selective receptors based on this interaction. The interaction allows for several other anions to self-assemble with halocarbons and mention is also given to the halogen bonding-based coordination of halides, polycyano- and polyoxometallates (72 references).
