Designing electrocatalysts for seawater splitting remains challenging. A Ru-Co alloy supported by an N-doped carbon substrate catalyst has been designed using etching and a low-temperature treatment method. Studies show that the superior performance of this catalyst is related to the hollow-structured N-doped carbon frame and surface reconstruction of the Ru-Co alloy.

Background & aims : Macronutrients are the main part of the human diet and can affect multiple health outcomes. Nevertheless, associations between dietary macronutrient quality and asthenozoospermia risk have not been reported to date. Thus, this study aimed to be the first to explore the associations between macronutrient quality and asthenozoospermia risk using the novel multidimensional macronutrient quality index (MQI). Methods : A case-control study was conducted at infertility clinics of Shengjing Hospital of China Medical University during June and December 2020, including 552 asthenozoospermia cases and 585 normozoospermia controls. Data on diet were collected using a validated food frequency questionnaire. MQI was estimated according to the carbohydrate quality index (CQI), fat quality index (FQI), and protein quality index (PQI). Binary logistic regression models were performed to calculate the odds ratio (OR) with a 95% confidence interval (CI). Subgroup and interaction analyses were performed based on age, body mass index, physical activity, smoking, drinking, and education level. Dose-response relationships were evaluated by restricted cubic splines. Sensitivity analyses were performed in two ways. First, participants with a dietary change were excluded to lower potential reverse causation. Then, we used the healthy plate protein source quality index instead of PQI to redefine MQI. Results : No statistically significant association was observed between dietary MQI and asthenozoospermia risk (OR = 1.24, 95% CI: 0.88-1.73). The sub-indices of MQI, CQI, FQI, and PQI, failed to be identified as having a statistically significant association with asthenozoospermia risk (OR = 1.35, 95% CI: 0.92-1.97 for CQI; OR = 1.13, 95% CI: 0.84-1.53 for FQI; OR = 1.28, 95% CI: 0.92-1.78 for PQI). However, CQI showed a positive association with the risk of asthenozoospermia among non-drinkers ( P trend < 0.05) and highly educated participants (OR = 1.82, 95% CI: 1.13-2.94; P trend < 0.05). Additionally, there was a multiplicative interaction between CQI and education level for asthenozoospermia risk ( P < 0.05). Conclusions : Our findings demonstrated no association of MQI and its sub-indices with asthenozoospermia risk except for CQI. Although our findings are mostly non-significant, they contribute novel knowledge to this research field and lay the foundation for future studies.

Incorporating functional organic linkers into supertetrahedral chalcogenolate cluster-based materials is an effective synthetic strategy to expand structural diversity and generate tunable optical and photoelectric properties arising from synergistic effects. Herein, a mixed ligand engineering approach was adopted to design a supertetrahedral cluster-based assembled material [(Cd 6 Ag 4 (SPh) 16 (TPPA)(BPE) 0.5 )·2DMF] n (denoted as SCCAM-3) with a 2D bilayer architecture and broader visible-light absorption. Interestingly, SCCAM-3 demonstrates a long-lived afterglow at 83 K and efficient photocatalytic activity for degrading tetracycline in water.

d-π overlap, which represents overlap between metal-d and graphene-π orbitals to facilitate electron transfer, has rarely been reported. Ni/PtNi-G 2 exhibits exceptional performance in seawater hydrogen evolution due to the electron-rich surface on Pt resulting from enhanced d-π overlap and subsequent electron transfer from graphene and Ni to Pt.

Periodontitis can lead to defects in the alveolar bone, thus increasing the demand for dependable biomaterials to repair these defects. This study aims to examine the pro-osteogenic and anti-bacterial properties of UPPE/β-TCP/TTC composites (composed of unsaturated polyphosphoester [UPPE], β-tricalcium phosphate [β-TCP], and tetracycline [TTC]) under an inflammatory condition. The morphology of MC3T3-E1 cells on the composite was examined using scanning electron microscopy. The toxicity of the composite to MC3T3-E1 cells was assessed using the Alamar-blue assay. The pro-osteogenic potential of the composite was assessed through ALP staining, ARS staining, RT-PCR, and WB. The antimicrobial properties of the composite were assessed using the zone inhibition assay. The results suggest that: (1) MC3T3-E1 cells exhibited stable adhesion to the surfaces of all four composite groups; (2) the UPPE/β-TCP/TTC composite demonstrated significantly lower toxicity to MC3T3-E1 cells; and (3) the UPPE/β-TCP/TTC composite had the most pronounced pro-osteogenic effect on MC3T3-E1 cells by activating the WNT/β-catenin pathway and displaying superior antibacterial properties. Exploring economical, efficient, and stable electrocatalysts for the seawater hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is highly desirable but is challenging. In this study, a Mo cation doped Ni 0.85 Se/MoSe 2 heterostructural electrocatalyst, Mo x -Ni 0.85 Se/MoSe 2 , was successfully prepared by simultaneously doping Mo cations into the Ni 0.85 Se lattice (Mo x -Ni 0.85 Se) and growing atomic MoSe 2 nanosheets epitaxially at the edge of the Mo x -Ni 0.85 Se. Such an Mo x -Ni 0.85 Se/MoSe 2 catalyst requires only 110 mV to drive current densities of 10 mA cm -2 in alkaline simulated seawater, and shows almost no obvious degradation after 80 h at 20 mA cm -2 . The experimental results, combined with the density functional theory calculations, reveal that the Mo x -Ni 0.85 Se/MoSe 2 heterostructure will generate an interfacial electric field to facilitate the electron transfer, thus reducing the water dissociation barrier. Significantly, the heteroatomic Mo-doping in the Ni 0.85 Se can regulate the local electronic configuration of the Mo x -Ni 0.85 Se/MoSe 2 heterostructure catalyst by altering the coordination environment and orbital hybridization, thereby weakening the bonding interaction between the Cl and Se/Mo. The human heat shock protein plays a critical role in various diseases and is an important target for pharmacological modulation. Simulation of conformational changes and free energy profiles of the human heat shock protein derived by the ligand-leaving process is a challenging issue. In this work, steered molecular dynamics simulation was adopted to simulate the ligand-leaving process. Two composite systems of heat shock protein NHSP90 and small molecules 6FJ and 6G7 are selected as research objects. The free energy during the leaving of ligand small molecules is calculated using conventional molecular dynamics simulation, steered molecular dynamics simulation (SMD), and the umbrella sampling method. We found that the a slower pulling velocity (0.001 nm ns -1 ) will result in 2.19 kcal mol -1 , and the umbrella sampling method gives a value of 3.26 kcal mol -1 for the free energy difference for the two systems, which reasonably agrees with experimental results. A faster-pulling velocity (0.01 nm ns -1 ) leads to a large overestimation of free energy. At the same time, the conformational analysis indicated that the faster pulling velocity may lead to the conformational change of NHSP90, which was proved to be false by the slower pulling velocity and the umbrella sampling method.

Catalytic depolymerization represents a promising approach for the closed-loop recycling of plastic wastes. Here, we report a knowledge-driven catalyst development for poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) recycling, which not only achieves more than 23-fold enhancement in specific activity but also reduces the alkali concentration by an order of magnitude compared with the conventional hydrolysis. Substituted binuclear zinc catalysts are developed to regulate biomimetic intramolecular PET hydrolysis. Hammett studies and density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that the substituents modify the charge densities of the active centers, and an optimal substituent should slightly increase the electron richness of the zinc sites to facilitate the formation of a six-membered ring intermediate. The understanding of the structure-activity relationship leads to an advanced catalyst with a specific activity of 778 ± 40 g PET h -1 g catal -1 in 0.1 M NaOH, far outcompeting the conventional hydrolysis using caustic bases (<33.3 g PET h -1 g catal -1 in 1-5 M NaOH). Disulfiram (DSF) has been used as a hangover drug for more than seven decades and was found to have potential in cancer treatment, especially mediated by copper. However, the uncoordinated delivery of disulfiram with copper and the instability of disulfiram limit its further applications. Herein, we synthesize a DSF prodrug using a simple strategy that could be activated in a specific tumor microenvironment. Poly amino acids are used as a platform to bind the DSF prodrug through the B-N interaction and encapsulate CuO 2 nanoparticles (NPs), obtaining a functional nanoplatform Cu@P-B. In the acidic tumor microenvironment, the loaded CuO 2 NPs will produce Cu 2+ and cause oxidative stress in cells. At the same time, the increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) will accelerate the release and activation of the DSF prodrug and further chelate the released Cu 2+ to produce the noxious copper diethyldithiocarbamate complex, which causes cell apoptosis effectively. Cytotoxicity tests show that the DSF prodrug could effectively kill cancer cells with only a small amount of Cu 2+ (0.18 μg mL -1 ), inhibiting the migration and invasion of tumor cells. In vitro and in vivo experiments have demonstrated that this functional nanoplatform could kill tumor cells effectively with limited toxic side effects, showing a new perspective in DSF prodrug design and cancer treatment., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts to declare., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry.)

A large polymolybdate-templated {Ag49Mo16} cluster protected by six thiacalix[4]arene (TC4A) molecules was synthesized by a one-pot solvothermal reaction. Structural analysis shows that the {Ag49Mo16} is assembled by inserting a [Mo 6 O 22 ] 8- cluster into a [Ag 49 Mo 10 @(TC4A) 6 ] cage, representing the first polyoxometalate-templated Ag cluster protected by calixarene macrocyclic ligands. The solution stability and photoelectric properties of {Ag49Mo16} are discussed. Furthermore, this POM-templated Ag nanocluster realized electrocatalytic CO 2 reduction applications, and 44.75% CO faradaic efficiency (FE) was obtained at a voltage of -0.8 V ( vs. RHE).

Zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) have received much research attention due to their advantages of safety, non-toxicity, simple manufacture, and element abundance. Nevertheless, serious problems still remain for their anodes, such as dendrite development, corrosion, passivation, and the parasitic hydrogen evolution reaction due to their unique aqueous electrolyte system constituting the main issues that must be addressed, which are blocking the further advancement of anodes for Zn-ion batteries. Herein, we conduct an in-depth analysis of the problems that exist for the zinc anode, summarize the main failure types and mechanisms of the zinc anode, and review the main modification strategies for the anode from the three aspects of the electrolyte, anode surface, and anode host. The present study shows the purification of a main oligosaccharide fraction (MLO 1-2) from the enzymatic hydrolysate of mulberry leaf polysaccharides by DEAE-52 cellulose and gel column chromatography. The physicochemical properties of MLO 1-2 were characterized. The structure of MLO 1-2 was obtained as follows: α-(2-OAc)-Man p -1 → 2-β-Glc p -1 → 4-β-Glc p -1 → 4-α-Glc p -1 → 2-α-Glc p -1 → 2-α-Gal p -1 → 2-β-Gal p -1 → 2-β-Gal p -1, which was elucidated by methylation and NMR analysis. The molecular weight of MLO 1-2 showed no significant change after simulated saliva, gastric and intestinal digestion. This indicated that MLO 1-2 could pass through the digestive system without being degraded to safely reach the colon to regulate the gut microbiota. Additionally, MLO 1-2, more than glucose or galactooligosaccharides, promoted the proliferation of Bifidobacterium bifidum , B. adolescentis , Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus and Lactobacillus acidophilus . Furthermore, the acetic and lactic acid concentrations of bacterial cultures inoculated with MLO 1-2 were higher than those inoculated with glucose and galactooligosaccharide (GOS). These results suggest that MLO 1-2 could be an excellent prebiotic for intestinal flora regulation and the promotion of gut health.

In this study, a facile and environmentally friendly synthesis process was proposed without regular chemical additives. We successfully synthesized spherical gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) coated with glycyrrhizin (GL) by using GL as both a reductant and a stabilizer to reduce chloroauric acid. The obtained NPs were approximately 35 nm in size. The formation of these GL-AuNPs was verified by the presence of a surface plasmon resonance band at 526 nm. We also experimentally determined that in terms of chemical structure, GL can be used as a reducing agent to obtain colloidal gold. The d-glucuronic acid structure, rather than glycyrrhetinic acid (GA), plays an important reducing role in colloidal gold production. From this, we hypothesized that other compounds with sugar structures in Glycyrrhiza may also have the ability to reduce chloroauric acid. To mitigate the high cost and low efficiency of current GL detection methods, we applied AuNPs to the immunochromatographic system. Then, a colloidal gold immunochromatographic test strip based on the indirect competition method was developed for the rapid detection of GL, and the detection limit of this strip was 25 ng mL -1 . The cross-test showed that the strip has high specificity. The test results are consistent with the data obtained by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with a coincidence rate of up to 100%. We report an alternating-reduction approach by galvanic replacement and co-reduction to enable incorporation of Pd into Pt shell, and the obtained PtPd hollow nanocubes with an enhanced alloy effect and highly active {100} facets show high catalytic activity and superior durability in the methanol oxidation reaction.

Electrocatalysis for cathodic oxygen is of great significance for achieving high-performance lithium-oxygen batteries. Herein, we report a facile and green method to prepare an interconnected nanoporous three-dimensional (3D) architecture, which is composed of RuO2 nanogranulates coated with few layers of carbon. The as-prepared 3D nanoporous RuO2@C nanostructure can demonstrate a high initial specific discharge capacity of 4000 mA h g-1 with high round-trip efficiency of 95%. Meanwhile, the nanoporous RuO2@C could achieve stable cycling performance with a fixed capacity of 1500 mA h g-1 over 100 cycles. The terminal discharge and charge potentials of nanoporous RuO2@C are well maintained with minor potential variation of 0.14 and 0.13 V at the 100th cycle, respectively. In addition, the formation of discharge products is monitored by using in situ high-energy synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD).

Spatial catalytic acid-base-Pd triple-sites of a hierarchical core-shell structure have been successfully constructed for a three-step reaction, and exhibited excellent catalytic activity and stability. A catalytic mechanism has been systematically studied via single one- and two-step reactions, and possible molecular reactions have been proposed.

Prothioconazole is a fungicide that has a wide number of applications in agriculture, and it can ensure the safety of crops, users, and the environment. Prothioconazole, as a suppressor of copper dissolution in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 solution, has been evaluated using electrochemical experiments, weight loss tests, quantum chemical calculations, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The electrochemical test results showed that prothioconazole was an excellent inhibitor, and the anticorrosion ability increased with the inhibitor concentration. The interaction of prothioconazole with copper is a spontaneous adsorption process accompanied by typical chemisorption. The number of water molecules ( X ) displaced by one prothioconazole molecule was obtained using diverse substitutional adsorption models based on electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) data. Mulberry has been used as a functional food to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). However, it contains relatively high levels of fructose and glucose, which are not suitable for excess consumption by diabetic patients. In this study we used microbial fermentation to remove fructose and glucose from mulberry fruit, and then determined the effects on glycemia, the phosphatidylinositol 3-hydroxykinase/Akt (PI3K/Akt) and adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK) signaling pathways and their downstream effectors in T2DM mice. After 5 weeks of administration, fermented mulberry (FM) significantly reduced fasting blood glucose, and also improved insulin sensitivity and glucose tolerance, more effectively than unfermented mulberry (MP). Moreover, compared with MP, FM had a more marked effect on the protein expression of intermediates in the PI3K/Akt and AMPK signaling pathways and their effectors: insulin receptor, phosphorylated Akt (Ser 308), phosphorylated glycogen synthase kinase-3β (Ser 9), glycogen synthetase, phosphorylated forkhead transcription factor 1 (Ser 256), pyruvate carboxylase, phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase, fructose-1, 6-bisphosphatase, glucose-6-phosphatase, lipoprotein lipase, and phosphorylated AMPK (Thr 172), glucose transporter 4 and pyruvate kinase. These findings indicate that mulberry fruit modified to remove fructose and glucose may be more promising than whole mulberry as a treatment for diabetes.

Two new isostructural non-centrosymmetric cerium iodates K x Ce 9 (IO 3 ) 36 (x≈ 3) and La x Ce 9 (IO 3 ) 36 (x≈ 0.3) were synthesized via a hydrothermal method and systematically characterized. They are intermediate valence compounds with the same band gap, showing similar microscopic net dipole moments per unit volume, but different macroscopic second-harmonic generation (SHG) responses under 1064 nm laser irradiation. This research gives a new view for understanding the effects of electronic structure on the SHG response.

Inorganic chalcohalides have emerged as promising functional materials for a range of applications. However, most of them are chlorides and bromides, while iodides are still rare. Herein, a new quaternary iodine-based chalcohalide Ba3GaS4I has been acquired by the reaction of BaS, Ga, S and BaI2 at 1173 K. Single-crystal XRD analysis reveals that Ba3GaS4I has a centrosymmetric structure (orthorhombic, space group Cmcm, a = 6.991(3) Å, b = 15.910(7) Å, c = 9.698(4) Å, V = 1078.6(7) Å3, and Z = 4) and consists of isolated [GaS4] tetrahedra with charge-balanced Ba2+ cations and I- anions. Ba3GaS4I can be regarded as the product of chemical substitution of Ba3GaS4X (X = Cl, Br), which adopts a different space group, Pnma. The influences of the halogen elements on the bandgap and birefringence have been discussed through first principles calculations and structural comparison.

A nitrogen-thermal approach via the reaction between transition metal species and N dopants affords us the ability to optimize the tradeoff between the number of exposed transition metal/carbon (exemplified by cobalt in this work) boundaries and the most pronounced interfacial rectifying contact to achieve the highly efficient and selective hydrogenation and dehydrogenation of N-heterocycle compounds in a reversible manner.

We detail the rational design of bimetallic cyanide-bridged complexes [TpmRu(L D )(μ-CN)Ru(L P )Cp*][PF 6 ] 2 (Tpm = Tris(1-pyrazolyl)methane, L D = 1,10-phenanthroline (phen), 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy), 4,4'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine (dbpy), L P = bis(diphenylphosphino)methane (dppm), bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane (dppe), Cp* = 1,2,3,4,5-pentamethylcyclopentadiene). The metal-to-metal charge transfer (MMCT) properties of these one-electron oxidized complexes were investigated, suggesting that the substitution of the ancillary ligand provides a strong impetus to systematically tune the MMCT properties. The investigation results indicate that all the mixed-valence complexes belong to Class II mixed-valence complexes, according to the Robin-Day classification.

Phycocyanin (PC), a water-soluble biliprotein, exhibits potent anti-colon cancer properties. However, its application in functional foods is limited by the poor stability and low bioavailability of PC. In this study, we successfully encapsulated PC by coaxial electrospinning. The colon targeted release of PC was achieved with retention of the antioxidant activity of PC. The PC-loaded electrospun fiber mat (EFM) obtained inhibited HCT116 cell growth in a dose-dependent and time-dependent manner. In particular, the PC-loaded EFM exerted its anti-cancer activity by blocking the cell cycle at the G0/G1 phase and inducing cell apoptosis involving the decrease of Bcl-2/Bax, activation of caspase 3 and release of cytochrome c. This study suggests that co-axial electrospinning is an efficient and effective way to deliver PC and improve its bioavailability; thus, it represents a promising approach for encapsulating functional ingredients for colon cancer prevention.

We described an effective way to generate a Co 3 O 4 mesocrystal array with well-developed porosity, simply by uniting a coupled interface with hydrazine treatment. Due to the fast electron transfer and sufficient active sites, the Ti mesh-supported Co 3 O 4 nanoneedles electrode could provide a current density of 49.9 mA cm -2 at 570 mV OER overpotential and has exceptionally high stability.

A facile and efficient method to form a chiral multi-substituted 3H-spiro[benzofuran-2,1'-cyclopentane] structural unit has been developed via a one-pot [3+2] cyclization/semipinacol rearrangement cascade. A catalysis system of Cu(ii)/BOX has been used to efficiently construct a key stereogenic center via a cyclization between substituted benzoquinones and allylic alcohols affording the desired products in good yields and with excellent enantioselectivities and diastereoselectivities (21 examples; up to 67% yields; up to 92% ee and up to >20 : 1 dr). This method provides an alternative strategy for the synthesis of the corresponding bioactive molecules containing spiro[benzofurancyclopentane] skeleton units.

Mulberry (Morus atropurpurea) has long been used to treat gastro-intestinal ailments; however, the functional basis of its therapeutic effects remains unclear. The aim of this study was to measure the effects of mulberry (administered by gavage) on diphenoxylate-induced constipation in mice and elucidate the mechanisms underlying these effects using constipation and physicochemical indexes, histological morphology and 16S rDNA amplicon analysis of fecal microbiota. Sixty Kunming mice were randomly divided into the following six groups (n = 10 per group): normal control, constipation model, positive control, and low-, mid- and high-dose mulberry groups. After 14 days of treatment, constipation was induced over 5 days and measurements were conducted. The results show that mulberry treatment prevented constipation by increasing the fecal water content, shortening the first red fecal defecation time, promoting gastric evacuation, and increasing the gastric-intestinal transit rate (P < 0.05). Compared with the constipation model group, the mulberry-treated groups showed decreased aquaporin gene expression (Aqp3, Aqp4, Aqp8 and Aqp9), decreased serum levels of inhibitory neurotransmitters (nitric oxide and vasoactive intestinal peptide) (P < 0.05), and increased serum levels of excitability neurotransmitters (acetyl choline, substance P, and motilin). The histological morphology of the colon showed that mulberry treatment increased the number of mucus cells (P < 0.05). Mulberry treatment also increased the concentrations of acetic, propionic, butyric, valeric and isovaleric acids (P < 0.05), increased the abundance of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium in feces, and decreased the abundance of Helicobacter and Prevotellaceae in feces. Our findings indicate that mulberry consumption effectively prevents constipation in mice and is a promising therapeutic candidate for constipation.

Despite being a brassicaceous vegetable that is widely consumed in winter and spring in Southwest China, there is lack of information available on baby mustard. The aim of this study was to determine the contents of soluble proteins, soluble sugars, chlorophylls, carotenoids, ascorbic acid, proanthocyanidins, flavonoids, total phenolics, and glucosinolates, as well as the antioxidant activity of the whole edible parts and seven individual edible parts (swollen stem: petioles, peel, flesh; lateral bud: leaves, petioles, peel, flesh) of baby mustard. The results showed that significant differences in health-promoting compounds and antioxidant activity existed between the different edible parts. The lateral bud of baby mustard possessed greater health-promoting compounds than the swollen stem. In particular, the lateral bud leaves possessed abundant antioxidant compounds and antioxidant activity, indicating that these should be conserved during harvesting due to their potential contribution to human health. Furthermore, aliphatic glucosinolates were predominant, and sinigrin was the most abundant glucosinolate in all the assessed parts of baby mustard, the content of which was 15.81 μmol g -1 dry weight, accounting for more than 87% of the total glucosinolate content. However, the sinigrin content in baby mustard is lower than tuber mustard, which explains the less pungent flavor of baby mustard and its better suitability as a fresh vegetable. Single cell surface engineering provides the most efficient, non-genetic strategy to enhance cell stability. However, it remains a huge challenge to improve cell stability in complex artificial environments. Here, a soft biohybrid interfacial layer is fabricated on individual living-cell surfaces by their exposure to a suspension of gold nanoparticles and l-cysteine to form a protecting functional layer to which porous silica layers were bound yielding pores with a diameter of 3.9 nm. The living cells within the bilayered nanoshells maintained high viability (96 ± 2%) as demonstrated by agar plating, even after five cycles of simultaneous exposure to high temperature (40 °C), lyticase and UV light. Moreover, yeast cells encapsulated in bilayered nanoshells were more recyclable than native cells due to nutrient storage in the shell.

A Brønsted acid-functionalized metal-organic framework (MOF), MIL-101-SO 3 H, was prepared for acid-engaged esterification reactions. Strikingly, for the first time, the MOF exhibits significantly light-enhanced activity and possesses excellent activity and recyclability, with even higher activity than H 2 SO 4 under light irradiation.

A facile high-viscosity-solvent method is presented to synthesize PtPd bimetallic nanocrystals highly dispersed in different mesostructures (2D and 3D structures), porosities (large and small pore sizes), and compositions (silica and carbon). Further, highly catalytic activity, stability and durability of the nanometals have been proven in different catalytic reactions.

The one-step pyrolysis of a zeolite-type metal-organic framework, Co(2-methylimidazole)2 (ZIF-67), produces an N-doped porous carbon incorporating well-dispersed Co/CoO nanoparticles, which exhibit excellent catalytic activity, chemoselectivity and magnetic recyclability for the tandem dehydrogenation of ammonia borane and hydrogenation of nitro compounds at room temperature.

The γ-Fe2O3 nanoparticles well dispersed in porous carbon were fabricated via a Fe-based metal-organic framework-templated pyrolysis. The resultant product exhibits excellent catalytic activity, chemoselectivity and magnetic recyclability for the hydrogenation of diverse nitro compounds under mild conditions.

Efficient and cost-effective electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), especially bifunctional catalysts for overall water splitting, are highly desired. In this work, with rationally designed sandwich-type metal-organic framework/graphene oxide as a template and precursor, a layered CoP/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) composite has been successfully prepared via pyrolysis and a subsequent phosphating process. The resultant CoP/rGO-400 exhibits excellent HER activity in acid solution. More importantly, the catalyst manifests excellent catalytic performances for both the HER and OER in basic solution. Therefore, it can be utilized as a bifunctional catalyst on both the anode and cathode for overall water splitting in basic media, even displaying superior activity to that of the integrated Pt/C and IrO 2 catalyst couple.

A new Buchwald-type diphosphine ligand has been developed for applications in Pd-catalyzed amination reactions towards the preparation of triarylamines. The catalyst can be used to perform the amination of a diverse array of aryl and heteroaryl chlorides.

A Co-based metal-organic framework, ZIF-67, has been exploited as a self-template to afford N-doped porous carbon incorporating Co NPs with surface-oxidized CoO species, which exhibit excellent catalytic activity, selectivity and magnetic recyclability toward the direct oxidation of alcohols to esters with O2 as a benign oxidant under mild conditions.

We report the synthesis of 2-(anthracen-9-yl)-1H-inden-3-yl dicyclohexylphosphine and its use in palladium-catalyzed borylation/Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction to prepare a variety of symmetrical and unsymmetrical biaryl compounds in excellent yield.

In the current study, we developed a facile strategy for the one-pot synthesis of an aptamer-based organic-silica hybrid monolithic capillary column. A 5'-SH-modified aptamer, specifically targeting doxorubicin, was covalently modified in the hybrid silica monolithic column by a sol-gel method combined with "thiol-ene" click reaction. The prepared monolithic column had good stability and permeability, large specific surface, and showed excellent selectivity towards chemotherapeutic anthracyclines of doxorubicin and epirubicin. In addition, the enantiomers of doxorubicin and epirubicin can be easily separated by aptamer-based affinity monolithic capillary liquid chromatography. Furthermore, doxorubicin and epirubicin spiked in serum and urine were also successfully determined, which suggested that the complex biological matrix had a negligible effect on the detection of doxorubicin and epirubicin. Finally, we quantified the concentration of epirubicin in the serum of breast cancer patients treated with epirubicin by intravenous injection. The developed analytical method is cost-effective and rapid, and biological samples can be directly analyzed without any tedious sample pretreatment, which is extremely useful for monitoring medicines in serum and urine for pharmacokinetic studies.

An exfoliated MoS2-C composite (E-MoS2-C) was prepared via simple chemical exfoliation and a hydrothermal method. The obtained E-MoS2-C was tested as an anode material for sodium ion batteries. High capacity (~400 mA h g(-1)) at 0.25 C (100 mA g(-1)) was maintained over prolonged cycling life (100 cycles). Outstanding rate capability was also achieved with a capacity of 290 mA h g(-1) at 5 C.

We report the synthesis of 2-(3-sulfonatomesityl)-5-sulfonatoindenyl)dicyclohexylphosphine hydrate sodium salt and its use in palladium-catalyzed Suzuki-Miyaura and Sonogashira coupling reactions in water (and biphasic water-organic solvent mixtures) to prepare a variety of functionalized biaryls and aryl alkynes in excellent yield.

In this study, poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and heparin were sequentially immobilized on a titanium surface by the carbodiimide covalent coupling method with the aim to improve the blood compatibility of titanium and enhance endothelial cell adhesion and proliferation. The results of attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed that PEG and heparin were successfully immobilized on the titanium surface. Compared to the pristine titanium, a highly hydrophilic layer was achieved after the immobilization, and the resulting heparin-PEG layer can significantly prevent human plasma fibrinogen adsorption. Analysis of platelet attachment to the modified surfaces, via scanning electron microscopy (SEM), showed strikingly fewer platelets attached to the PEG and heparin modified surfaces, compared to the control. The immobilized PEG and heparin effectively prolonged the activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) and inhibit platelet activation significantly. Furthermore, the modified samples showed good cytocompatibility. Endothelial cells exhibited improved proliferative profiles in terms of a CCK-8 assay, as compared to those on the pristine titanium. The modified samples showed a better endothelial cell adhesion and spreading, than the pristine titanium. Therefore, the blood compatibility and cytocompatibility of the titanium surface can be enhanced by PEG immobilization and further, by subsequent heparin grafting. It could be concluded that the negatively charged heparin-PEG layer with excellent hydrophilicity could obviously improve the blood compatibility and enhance the endothelial cell adhesion and proliferation, and the approach of the present study is considered as an effective method to improve the hemocompatibility and cytocompatibility of biomaterials.

Aldehydes can react with secondary amines to give α-amino acetals via the α-amination of aliphatic aldehydes catalyzed by iodine. The presence of an asymmetric hydroxylated center at the γ-position of the aldehyde was found to induce the stereoselective amino group. This method represents a stereoselective α-amination of γ-hydroxyaldehydes for the synthesis of syn-γ-hydroxy-α-amino acetals in good yields and reasonable diastereoselectivities under very mild conditions.
