We report the growth of epitaxial wurtzite AlScN thin films on Si (111) substrates with a wide range of Sc concentrations using ultra-high vacuum reactive sputtering. Sc alloying in AlN enhances piezoelectricity and induces ferroelectricity, and epitaxial thin films facilitate systematic structure-based investigations of this important and emerging class of materials. Two main effects are observed as a function of increasing Sc concentration. First, increasing crystalline disorder is observed together with a structural transition from wurtzite to rocksalt at ∼30 at% Sc. Second, nanoscale compositional segregation consistent with spinodal decomposition occurs at intermediate compositions, before the wurtzite to rocksalt phase boundary is reached. Lamellar features arising from composition fluctuations are correlated with polarization domains in AlScN, suggesting that composition segregation can influence ferroelectric properties. The present results provide a route to the creation of single crystal AlScN films on Si (111), as well as a means for self-assembled composition modulation.

The physical properties of in vitro iron-reconstituted and genetically engineered human heteropolymer ferritins were investigated. High-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM), electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS), and 57 Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy were employed to ascertain (1) the microstructural, electronic, and micromagnetic properties of the nanosized iron cores, and (2) the effect of the H and L ferritin subunit ratios on these properties. Mössbauer spectroscopic signatures indicate that all iron within the core is in the high spin ferric state. Variable temperature Mössbauer spectroscopy for H-rich (H 21 /L 3 ) and L-rich (H 2 /L 22 ) ferritins reconstituted at 1000 57 Fe/protein indicates superparamagnetic behavior with blocking temperatures of 19 K and 28 K, while HAADF-STEM measurements give average core diameters of (3.7 ± 0.6) nm and (5.9 ± 1.0) nm, respectively. Most significantly, H-rich proteins reveal elongated, dumbbell, and crescent-shaped cores, while L-rich proteins present spherical cores, pointing to a correlation between core shape and protein shell composition. Assuming an attempt time for spin reversal of τ 0 = 10 -11 s, the Néel-Brown formula for spin-relaxation time predicts effective magnetic anisotropy energy densities of 6.83 × 10 4 J m -3 and 2.75 × 10 4 J m -3 for H-rich and L-rich proteins, respectively, due to differences in surface and shape contributions to magnetic anisotropy in the two heteropolymers. The observed differences in shape, size, and effective magnetic anisotropies of the derived biomineral cores are discussed in terms of the iron nucleation sites within the interior surface of the heteropolymer shells for H-rich and L-rich proteins. Overall, our results imply that site-directed nucleation and core growth within the protein cavity play a determinant role in the resulting core morphology. We report in situ atomic-scale transmission electron microscopy observations of the surface dynamics during Cu2O reduction. We show inhomogeneous oxide reduction caused by the preferential adsorption of hydrogen at step edges that induces oxygen loss and destabilizes Cu atoms within the step edge, thereby resulting in the retraction motion of atomic steps at the oxide surface.

Li 1+n V 3 O 8 (n = 0-0.2) has been extensively investigated as a cathode material for Li ion batteries because of its superior electrochemical properties including high specific energy and good rate capability. In this paper, a synchrotron based energy dispersive X-ray diffraction (EDXRD) technique was employed to profile the phase transitions and the spatial phase distribution of a Li 1.1 V 3 O 8 electrode during electrochemical (de)lithiation in situ and operando. As annealing temperature during the preparation of the Li 1.1 V 3 O 8 material has a strong influence on the morphology and crystallinity, and consequently influences the electrochemical outcomes of the material, Li 1.1 V 3 O 8 materials prepared at two different temperatures, 500 and 300 °C (LVO500 and LVO300), were employed in this study. The EDXRD spectra of LVO500 and LVO300 cells pre-discharged at C/18, C/40 and C/150 were recorded in situ, and phase localization and relative intensity of the peaks were compared. For cells discharged at the C/18 rate, although α and β phases were distributed uniformly within the LVO500 electrode, they were localized on two sides of the LVO300 electrode. Discharging rates of C/40 and C/150 led to homogeneous β phase formation in both LVO500 and LVO300 electrodes. Furthermore, the phase distribution as a function of position and (de)lithiation extent was mapped operando as the LVO500 cell was (de)lithiated. The operando data indicate that (1) the lithiation reaction initiated from the side of the electrode facing the Li anode and proceeded towards the side facing the steel can, (2) during discharge the phase transformation from a Li-poor to a Li-rich α phase and the formation of a β phase can proceed simultaneously in the electrode after the first formation of a β phase, and (3) the structural evolution occurring during charging is not the reverse of that during discharge and takes place homogenously throughout the electrode.

Copper ferrite, CuFe2O4, is a promising candidate for application as a high energy electrode material in lithium based batteries. Mechanistic insight on the electrochemical reduction and oxidation processes was gained through the first X-ray absorption spectroscopic study of lithiation and delithiation of CuFe2O4. A phase pure tetragonal CuFe2O4 material was prepared and characterized using laboratory and synchrotron X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. Ex situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) measurements were used to study the battery redox processes at the Fe and Cu K-edges, using X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES), extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS), and transmission X-ray microscopy (TXM) spectroscopies. EXAFS analysis showed upon discharge, an initial conversion of 50% of the copper(ii) to copper metal positioned outside of the spinel structure, followed by a migration of tetrahedral iron(iii) cations to octahedral positions previously occupied by copper(ii). Upon charging to 3.5 V, the copper metal remained in the metallic state, while iron metal oxidation to iron(iii) was achieved. The results provide new mechanistic insight regarding the evolution of the local coordination environments at the iron and copper centers upon discharging and charging.

We visualize atomic level dynamics during Si nanowire growth using aberration corrected environmental transmission electron microscopy, and compare with lower pressure results from ultra-high vacuum microscopy. We discuss the importance of higher pressure observations for understanding growth mechanisms and describe protocols to minimize effects of the higher pressure background gas.

Bulk metals and metal chalcogenides are found to dissolve in primary amine-dithiol solvent mixtures at ambient conditions. Thin-films of CuS, SnS, ZnS, Cu2Sn(S(x),Se(1-x))3, and Cu2ZnSn(S(x)Se(1-x))4 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) were deposited using the as-dissolved solutions. Cu2ZnSn(S(x)Se(1-x))4 solar cells with efficiencies of 6.84% and 7.02% under AM1.5 illumination were fabricated from two example solution precursors, respectively.

The thermal and chemical stability of micelle-synthesized size-selected Pt nanoparticles (NPs) supported on thin SiO2 (20 nm) films was monitored in situ via transmission electron microscopy (TEM) under pure hydrogen and pure oxygen environments. The coarsening treatment was performed for 30 min at each temperature (1 Torr of either O2 or H2), while the TEM measurements were carried out at 1 Torr of H2 and 0.5 Torr of O2. Surprisingly, the NPs were found to be stable against sintering under both gaseous atmospheres up to 650 °C. Nevertheless, drastic sintering via diffusion-coalescence was observed upon annealing in H2 at 800 °C. In contrast, an identically prepared sample demonstrated lack of agglomeration at the same temperature under O2. The latter observation is ascribed to a strengthened chemical bond at the NP/support interface due to the formation of PtOx species at low temperature. Subsequently, oxidative NP redispersion - associated with some loss of Pt due to the formation of volatile PtOx species - is inferred from the behavior in O2 at/above 650 °C. In contrast, SiO2 reduction catalyzed by the presence of the Pt NPs and Pt silicide formation was found in H2 at 800 °C, which might play a role in the enhanced coarsening observed. Subsequent exposure of the PtSi NPs to oxygen led to the formation of Pt-SiO2 core-shell structures. Our findings highlight the dynamic structural transformations that nanoscale materials experience under different environments and the important role played by their initial size, size distribution and dispersion on their stability against sintering.

Oxidation of Cu occurs via Cu2O islanding on an oxide wetting layer at a critical thickness of two atomic layers. The transition from 2D wetting-layer growth to 3D oxide islanding is driven energetically arising from the Cu-Cu2O interfacial interaction.
