Hexamethylguanidinium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide ([HMG][FSI]) has recently been shown to be a promising solid state organic ionic plastic crystal with potential application in advanced alkali metal batteries. This study provides a detailed exploration of the structural and dynamic behavior of [HMG][FSI] mixtures with the sodium salt NaFSI across the whole composition range from 0 to 100 mol%. All mixtures are solids at room temperature. A combination of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), synchrotron X-ray diffraction (SXRD) and multinuclear solid state NMR spectroscopy is employed to identify a partial phase diagram. The 25 mol% NaFSI/75 mol% [HMG][FSI] composition presents as the eutectic composition with the eutectic transition temperature at 44 °C. Both DSC and SXRD strongly support the formation of a new compound near 50 mol% NaFSI. Interestingly, the 53 mol% NaFSI [HMG][FSI] composition was consistently found to display features of a pure compound whereas the 50 mol% materials always showed a second phase. Many of the compositions examined showed unusual metastable behaviour. Moreover, the ion dynamics as determined by NMR, indicate that the Na+ and FSI− anions are signifcantly more mobile than the HMG cation in the liquid state (including the metastable state) for these materials. The full utilization of plant biomass for the production of energy and novel materials often involves high temperature treatment. Examples include melt spinning of lignin for manufacturing low-cost carbon fiber and the relocalization of lignin to increase the accessibility of cellulose for production of biofuels. These temperature-induced effects arise from poorly understood changes in lignin flexibility. Here, we combine molecular dynamics simulations with neutron scattering and dielectric spectroscopy experiments to probe the dependence of lignin dynamics on hydration and thermal history. We find a dynamical and structural hysteresis: at a given temperature, the lignin molecules are more expanded and their dynamics faster when the lignin is cooled than when heated. The structural hysteresis is more pronounced for dry lignin. The difference in dynamics, however, follows a different trend, it is found to be more significant at high temperatures and high hydration levels. The simulations also reveal syringyl units to be more dynamic than guiacyl. The results provide an atomic-detailed description of lignin dynamics, important for understanding lignin role in plant cell wall mechanics and for rationally improving lignin processing. The lignin glass transition, at which the polymer softens, is lower when lignin is cooled than when heated; therefore extending the cooling phase of processing and shortening the heating phase may offer ways to lower processing costs. It is well-known that the nature and size of the counterions affect the ionic conductivity and glass transition temperature of ionic polymers in a significant manner. However, the microscopic origin of the underlying changes in the dynamics of chains and counterions is far from completely understood. Using coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations of flexible and semi-flexible ionic polymers, we demonstrate that the glass transition temperature of ionic polymeric melts depends on the size of monovalent counterions in a non-monotonic manner. The glass transition temperature is found to be the highest for the smallest counterions and decreases with an increase in the counterion radii up to a point, after which the glass transition temperature increases with a further increase in the radii. This behavior is because the counterions have significant effects on the coupled dynamics of the charges on the chains and counterions. In particular, increase in the radii of the counterions leads to strongly coupled dynamics between the charges on the chains and the counterions. The static dielectric constant of the polymer melts also has a significant effect on the coupling and the glass transition temperature. The glass transition temperature is predicted to decrease with an increase in the dielectric constant. This, in turn, leads to an increase in the diffusion constant of the counterions at a given temperature. Backbone rigidity is shown to increase the glass transition temperature and decrease the coupling. Furthermore, faster counterion dynamics is predicted for the melts of semi-flexible chains in comparison with flexible chains at the same segmental relaxation time. As the semi-flexible chains tend to have a longer segmental relaxation time, semi-flexible polymers with high dielectric constants are predicted to have diffusion constants of counterions comparable with flexible polymers. Over the last decade, discussions on a possible liquid–liquid transition (LLT) have strongly intensified. The LLT proposed by several authors focused mostly on explaining the anomalous properties of water in a deeply supercooled state. However, there have been no direct experimental observations yet of LLT in bulk water in the so-called ‘no man's land’, where water exists only in the crystalline states. Recently, a novel experimental strategy to detect LLT in water has been employed using water–glycerol (W–G) mixtures, because glycerol can generate a strong hindrance for water crystallization. As a result, the observed first-order phase transition at a concentration of glycerol around cg≈ 20 mol% was ascribed to the LLT. Here we show unambiguously that the first order phase transition in W–G mixtures is caused by the ice formation. We provide additional dielectric measurements, applying specific annealing temperature protocols in order to reinforce this conclusion. We also provide an explanation, why such a phase transition occurs only in the narrow glycerol concentration range. These results clearly demonstrate the danger of analysis of phase-separating liquids to gain better insights into water dynamics. These liquids have complex phase behavior that is affected by temperature, phase stability and segregation, viscosity and nucleation, and finally by crystallization, that might lead to significant misinterpretations. Ionic liquids (ILs) are key materials for the development of a wide range of emerging technologies. Protic ionic liquids, an important class of ILs, have long been envisioned as promising anhydrous electrolytes for fuel cells. It is well known that in comparison to all other cations, protons exhibit abnormally high conductivity in water. Such superprotonic dynamics was expected in protic ionic conductors as well. However, many years of extensive studies led to the disappointing conclusion that this is not the case and most protic ionic liquids display subionic behavior. Therefore, the relatively low conductivity seems to be the main obstacle for the application of protic ionic liquids in fuel cells. Using dielectric spectroscopy, herein we report the observation of highly decoupled conductivity in a newly synthesized protic ionic conductor. We show that its proton transport is strongly decoupled from the structural relaxation, in terms of both temperature dependence and characteristic rates. This finding offers a fresh look on the charge transport mechanism in PILs and also provides new ideas for design of anhydrous materials with exceptionally high proton conductivity. There is tremendous interest in understanding the role that secondary structure plays in the rigidity and dynamics of proteins. In this work we analyze nanomechanical properties of proteins chosen to represent different secondary structures: α-helices (myoglobin and bovine serum albumin), β-barrels (green fluorescent protein), and α + β + loop structures (lysozyme). Our experimental results show that in these model proteins, the β motif is a stiffer structural unit than the α-helix in both dry and hydrated states. This difference appears not only in the rigidity of the protein, but also in the amplitude of fast picosecond fluctuations. Moreover, we show that for these examples the secondary structure correlates with the temperature- and hydration-induced changes in the protein dynamics and rigidity. Analysis also suggests a connection between the length of the secondary structure (α-helices) and the low-frequency vibrational mode, the so-called boson peak. The presented results suggest an intimate connection of dynamics and rigidity with the protein secondary structure.

Frustration in chain packing has been proposed to play an important role in thermodynamic and dynamic properties of polymeric melts and glasses. Based on a quantitative analysis using Voronoi tessellations and large scale molecular dynamics simulations of flexible and semi-flexible polymers, we demonstrate that the rigid polymer chains have higher averaged Voronoi polyhedral volumes and significantly wider distribution of the volume due to frustration in the chain packing. Using these results, we discuss the advantage of the rigid polymers for possible enhancement of transport properties, e.g. for enhancing ionic conductivity in solid polymer electrolytes.
